Elizabeth was glad the old sailor was beginning to see reason. However the sudden attack by the school of sharpedo worried her. Might this be due to the Ultra Beast incident? Well maybe not, sharpedo were known to be rather vicious pokemon. Drago and Aiko had arrived near the ruckus and Liz reached for the lumineon's pokeball only to have it suddenly jump into her hand. The young woman blinked in surprise. That hadn't happened before.
"Curious, seems your psychic talent is growing."
Coeus piped up with a subtle smile, rather pleased at the ranger's sudden change in psychic level. Her head started burning even more and she winced as she reached up to grip her forehead with her free hand. It suddenly seemed like a thousand voices were pouring in from all around her. Liz had always been pretty good at focusing only on her team and their thoughts, but this was different it was like she could now hear the thoughts of all those around her, pokemon and human alike and it was overwhelming. Plus her head had already begun hurting from earlier.
Quickly she recalled Drago and Akio then hurried to the railing of the dock and retched over the side. After emptying her stomach into the ocean she closed her eyes and tried to get a grip. She could feel Coeus and Raya were both concerned for her condition as each placed a hand on her shoulder. Even the emotion pouring off others from the sudden sharpedo excitement plus the worry over the Ultra Beast report was causing her head to spin yet the emotion was now easier to differentiate. However those in closest proximity to her seemed to now be in a panic.
Suddenly a blank void appeared at her side as Eran launched himself out onto the deck having come as requested. The umbreon pressed himself against the ranger's side and Liz forced herself to focus totally and completely on him. The dark fox acted as a barrier, blocking out anything giving off psychic energy between himself and the ranger. It was enough to help her focus her thoughts. Liz reached down and stroked the blue umbreon's head as the pain in her head lessened.
However the emotional impact still seemed to be affecting a nearby passenger. The young woman threw down two pokeball at Liz's feet and out popped a mantine and a massive lumenion, then she screamed rather incoherently and flailed her arms in Liz's direction. The ranger peered at her in confusion as Raya and Tansy both stepped in to shield their trainer. Liz tried to connect with Raya but as she did so the lucario's fist suddenly crackled with electrical energy. The two shared a look of even more confusion but the lucario just shrugged and used said fist to slam into the mantine dropping it with one blow, but not after it had managed to get off a psybeam at Tansy, weakening the venusaur.
The poisonous plant however didn't wait and battered the lumineon with petal blizzard. The huge fish managed to endure and regained a portion of health through aqua ring. The incoherent beachgoer chucked out another pokeball this time releasing a school of wishiwashi. Raya's fist charged up once more and she slammed it into the wishiwashi disrupting the school. Tansy hit the fancy fish with a giga drain, after taking a blow from water pulse, finishing the overgrown lumineon off while wishiwashi pulled up an aqua ring of it's own. Yet a final trading of blows, Wishiwashi's aqua tail against Raya's thunder punch, and Wishiwashi too was down.
"Miss... miss it's alright... calm down."
The ranger muttered through gritted teeth as she forced all her energy into keeping herself calm. Slowly the other passenger's thoughts became unclouded and she blinked blankly at Liz and the others, bewildered. She gaped at her fainted pokemon as though she had no idea what had just happened.
"Wha-? My pokemon, oh... I'm sorry did I attack you?"
The beachgoer began apologizing but Liz waved her off as she handed the woman a couple sitrus berries to help her pokemon. The ranger also gave Tansy a sitrus berry, the venusaur's energy level having dropped greatly due to the recent bouts of battling. Raya flexed her fist again and it sparked to life once more as she examined it. The group all turned to stare at Liz in concern. The ranger looked over at Josh a bit sheepishly while Eran nuzzled her hand.
"Sorry, I'm not sure what came over me. It was like a sudden surge of psychic energy. I hope it's nothing to do with the Ultra Beasts."
Flavia's Mantine was KO'd by Liz's Lucario! Flavia's Lumenion was KO'd by Liz's Venusaur! Flavia's Wishiwash was KO'd by Liz's Lucario! +1 Level to Tansy the Venusaur! +1 Level to Raya the Lucario! -1 Sitrus Berry!
And get past its temperament he would have to do - this Sharpedo was a strong one, his Great Ball floating every which way as the vicious water Pokémon. After a tense half-minute, his catch stopped moving. Josh retrieved a net to collect his catch, and scooped up two empty Repeat Balls in addition to the blue one. "Welcome to the team...Snacker."
Once he had it in his hand, he sent the Sharpedo back with the rest of his Pokémon. There was no sense in bringing something like that out on a vessel full of people, especially not having a clue what Snacker's personality was like. Sharpedo, like Skarmory, were known for being violent, but they were fantastic Pokémon for simpler aquatic races. Their Aqua Jet was among the fastest of speeds water Pokémon could achieve, whether on the surface or underwater.
He returned to the game room, the place filling again after his escapade with the Sharpedo as well as getting the word out to everyone there. He sat down at the table that had the two players looking for more for their tile game. "Mind if I hop in?" he asked. Both of them appeared to be young adults, a tiny Froakie perched on one of the two males. The two agreed, and the three started up a game. While they didn't have an automatic table like the ones in parlors back in Goldenrod, he would at least get to play a game he hadn't played in well over a year. They seemed to want to gamble, too. While Josh wasn't too happy about playing for money, he couldn't exactly argue with the low-stakes game for 350 Pen. The three shoved their stacks of fourteen 25-Pen coins into the center of the table.
While the three players were building the tile walls, Josh's eyes wandered toward Liz, who seemed to be in a trance. "This is my first time in two years playing not online, so excuse me if I'm slow." He turned his attention to the ranger. "Uh...you okay?" he asked as the three took their opening hands, unable to hold back a smile as the dora tile was flipped over.

Liz shook her head as she made her way back to the game table they'd first approached. She rubbed her head and decided it better to just watch their game then trying to join in at the moment. The ranger nodded slowly to Josh as she stroked Eran.
The dark type's presence was soothing and that gave her an idea. She levitated Akio's pokeball to her hand then held her phone up as she connected the the remote PC. With a few button presses the lumenion's pokeball vanished in a flash and another appeared to replace it. The ranger smile to herself as she released the occupant onto the deck.
Ciara shook out her white mane and gazed over the deck with a critical glance. She turned to look to Liz with a hint of concern and the ranger reached out to give her a pat in greeting. The presence of the two dark types was almost like being surrounded by a couple of blank walls. It was nice and made it much easier to focus.
"Yea, sorry, bit of a headache. So what are you guys playing?"
The three drew their first hands, and play proceeded around the table. Either Liz didn't know how to play, or she was content to watch. Or both. As he heard the cry of an Absol, Josh finished his current turn then released Twilight, to see if Ciara would enjoy her company. Though she didn't talk much, it appeared his Absol at least appreciated the other's presence. "Don't mind her - she doesn't express herself much. At least not to me." She wasn't saying much - perhaps the two were communicating telepathically somehow?
"We're playing mahjong - Kantonian mahjong, to be specific. It's a tradition that goes back centuries, back to the days when humans first started taming and training Pokémon. It's really popular in Kanto, and quite popular in Johto, as well. If you've played gin rummy before, it's a lot--Ron!" Josh cried, fully turning toward the table as one of the other players discarded the tile he needed to complete his hand. "All Simples and one dora," he announced, revealing his completed hand of thirteen tiles. "40 and 2 is...sorry, I haven't played in a while," he apologized, consulting a scoring table on his phone. "2,000 points." Not a big hand, considering the starting score was 35,000. That was likely the reason the wager on the game was 350 Pen - everything would divide easily.
As the three started shuffling the tiles for the next hand, Josh's ears picked up the sound of an alto choir coming from the waves. There was a large congregation of water Pokémon off the surface - a school of Lapras appeared to be singing for a school of Gorebyss. There was quite a crowd on the port side of the boat, enthralled by the performance as well.

"Nope don't think I've ever played this before."
She responded as she watched the group's game. She was feeling better now, the presence of the two dark canids was surprisingly soothing. Ciara surveyed Twilight curiously and reached her head over to give her fellow absol a sniff. The ranger smirked a little at the two considering their contradicting personalities. Ciara was the sort to stick her nose in where it didn't belong while she figured Twilight wouldn't appreciate such invasive mannerisms.
Coeus had moved away from the dark types to sulk a bit, the psychic fox also feeling a tad under the weather. Even Raya seemed a little cross eyed however the steel fighter didn't display any outward discomfort. She'd never show others any form of weakness. Tansy gazed at her friends with some concern, the venusaur never wanting her teammates to be unhappy.
Fortunately it seemed that a pod of lapras had decided to travel alongside the boat awhile and serenade the ferry and it's passengers. They seemed to be attracting a lot of attention with the gorebyss trailing after them. With Drago in his pokeball the lapras pod and gorebyss school had nothing to worry about from the ranger. The icey water types's song was actually quite soothing and the ranger was now feeling quite relaxed, even a bit groggy.
"Mmm that's rather lovely. Shame I don't have Lavender with me, she would've enjoyed singing with her kin."
The young woman commented with a soft smile as she closed her eyes. So far the trip had been fairly enjoyable but this was easily the best part. Even her pokemon seemed to be feeling better with the lapras's song.
The conversation between Ciara and Twilight appeared to be mostly one-sided, Ciara doing most of the talking and Twilight doing most of the listening. Unbeknownst to her trainer, she was mostly talking about how she loved the race track more than battling, even though Josh was raising her as more of a combat Pokémon. It was something she wished she could tell Josh, but kept to herself to keep her trainer happy.
As the next few hands of Josh's tile game unfolded, he found himself suffering small losses every hand as the others' hands were coming together. Late in the game, an excited young man sitting across from Josh cried "Tsumo!" a bit too loudly as he revealed his hand. "Reach, tsumo, all simples, all sequences, double pair sequences, dora 4. That's...a sanbaiman!" getting a few stares and "Pipe down" quips from others nearby.
The vessel made a somewhat sharp turn around a Corsola reef, tiles sliding off the wall and over the table. "Good thing that didn't happen in the middle of the hand," Josh remarked, "but still...do you have to do that when I'm dealer?" That gigantic hand cost him most of his points. Though he was able to bring some of them back in the very last hand of the game, he still wound up with fewer points than he started with, leaving him with a loss of cash...to the tune of 67 Pen. "...Good game." Though those were Josh's words, how genuine they were was questionable. "Might be back for another if you're still playing. For now I'm gonna wander." He turned to Liz again. "Can't win 'em all, I guess. Gonna wander a bit - coming with?"

The ranger watched the game only half paying attention. These sorts of games never really could hold her interest. Josh also didn't seem to be doing all that well from what she could tell.
Tansy had gone to check on Coeus, not wanting the psychic fox left completely on his own. The venusaur was oft playing the morale officer of Liz's pokemon, reaching out and doing what she could to ensure everyone was at least comfortable. Said alakazam was intently watching a pincurchin inch her way along the deck railing. What exactly the pincurchin was doing he wasn't sure but the little electric type held little interest to the group. Eran was too busy listening to Ciara and Twilight, the two lady absol proving to be rather intriguing by the little dark fox's standards whilst Raya simply rolled her eyes at the trio of dark types.
As the game ended and Josh made the suggestion to keep wandering Liz nodded. Her headache had subsided substantially thanks to Ciara and Eran but now her stomach audibly rumbled and she chuckled a bit.
"Sounds like a plan, perhaps we could check out the buffet while we're at it. Seems about time for lunch."
"While I'm not starving, it's close enough," Josh agreed. "Lunch sounds like a great idea - gives us a chance to catch up on the little stuff." With it being almost one in the afternoon, the line wasn't terribly busy. What caught his eyes the most in the line were the chicken mini-sandwiches and some delicious-looking, rather cheesy, macaroni salad. While he was a bit pickier about fruits and veggies, he did find there were a few bananas at the end of the table. He grabbed one and found a small table that another family, apparently of Kantonian origin, was just getting up from. The youngest of those three asked Josh for a battle after lunch. "Sure! I'll be there in a half hour!" was the racer's answer. He seemed to want to make small talk with Josh and Liz while they had lunch. Josh occasionally replied to the boy but kept his focus mainly on the ranger.
"I've actually caught my entire dream team since we last had the chance to talk," he started. "Once Nitro evolves into a Gogoat, the whole racing squad will be assembled!" Resheph cuddled around Josh's shoulders again, reaching toward his macaroni salad. He picked up a spoonful of the stuff and fed it to the young dragon-type, who affectionately nuzzled against her trainer's cheek. She reached for the bowl a second time. "I gave you a bite of my food already - I'll feed you yours once we get back to my cabin. Okay?" He rolled his eyes and tilted his head back to Liz. "I swear, some days she's a handful...she won't be able to do this as a Dragonair, I tell you."
After about fifteen minutes, the boy left, growing too impatient to continue waiting with the two. "Kids...I'll still go out and battle him after lunch, since he seemed so insistent," he mused aloud, finishing his chicken sandwich and being sure to cover his mouth when he belched. "That was really good stuff - this ship is like a cruise!" As he dug into the rest of his macaroni salad, he changed the subject. "After the race at Ivy, I'm planning on scouting out the Dragon's Den east of the mountains. I hear there's an organization there, much like the Blackthorn Dragoons, that knows a lot of secrets about raising dragon Pokémon. Perhaps they'll be able to teach me some stuff about Resheph?"
Mod note: Please do not roll a new spawn for Josh - he will fight the trainer in his next post.

"Yea I'd heard about these 'cruise ferries' before but hadn't ever been on one. Seems like a great idea for day long or overnight trips across the water."
The ranger commented as she joined the buffet line. Food was definitely a good time to chat. Plenty of other passengers seemed to be milling about as well. Liz was surprised at the variety of food and was able to pick up some fried drumsticks plus the usual potatoes and gravy and corn on the cob along with a side salad. Maybe not the healthiest food but it would certainly hold her likely for the remainder of the trip.
There was also plenty of pokemon food varieties too and her team helped themselves to a few things. Coeus took his meal back to the deck railing and noted a goldeen making an appearance. The psychic fox watched the fish swim about while he munched on his food. Raya gathered plates for Ciara, Eran and Tansy and set them out in front of the quadrupeds while she simply had some fresh water and a couple sitrus berries.
"This certainly is quite a spread."
The ranger commented as she joined Josh at the table. Their little companion was a curious one and could certainly talk one's ear off. She chuckled but tried to pay attention to Josh's side of the conversation.
"That's great! I've still got a ways to go to bring all my pokemon in from my home region."
She explained while trying not to talk with her mouth full. The ranger grinned at the excitable dratini then chuckled at Josh's comment.
"Well I wouldn't be too sure of that, even as a dragonair she'll likely try such things. Evolution doesn't change their personality."
Liz glanced back at Tansy thinking of the bold little bulbasaur she used to be and how, despite her generous size now, she still tried acting like the little bulbasaur whenever she could. She perked up at the mention of the dragon den.
"Dragon Den? I think I've heard rumors about it. That definitely sounds like an interesting spot to check out. I've a few dragons who might like to see it too. And yea, there are probably a lot of dragon experts there who could tell you more about dratini."
She'd nearly cleaned her plate and munched silently for a moment as she considered her own future plans.
"I think I'll try to head over to Plum next and maybe take on the gym leader there. I never did get a chance to finish my gym challenge back home so taking on the one here seems fitting. Plus it's always good to learn from the gym leaders."
"Man, that hit the--" Josh suddenly covered his mouth just in time for a belch. "Excuse me. That hit the spot. Good stuff!" He stacked his own glass, tableware, and clean plate on top of Liz's. "I was expecting this to just be a passenger line like the one that runs between Olivine and Vermilion, but no--this is something else! Wonder how Arciel has the budget for it? Either way, color me impressed!"
Josh stood up, ready to head back to the battle deck to meet up with the young child that was watching them before. "Sounds like we'll be heading our separate ways, then." He paused at the mention of the Gym Leaders. "Arciel's Gym Leaders are really tough. I got up to five Badges in the Johto League, and I still only have one here. I had to take Saber, Nitro, and a Shinx--now a Luxray--into Bass Gym. All three Pokémon great against water-types, and it was still a photo finish. Then I got clobbered at Ash Gym. It's almost like you have to come up with a totally different Pokémon team for every Gym you go to!" His next target would be Cork Town's Gym, but that didn't seem too promising with his current team, either.
"I'll shoot you a message if I think about you at all, how's that? And if I don't run into you before we make port, have a good one!" With that, the young man left the buffet and headed back to the battle deck, where the young Kantonian awaited, a Malamar at his side. Josh instinctively released Saber to his side, sparks already flying out of the Manectric's feet. The debilitating wave of electricity raced through the Malamar's chest, the Light Screen it put up just too slow to keep a vicious current from paralyzing the boy's Pokémon and frying all its extremities. Unrelenting, the electric wolf charged forward and shocked the Malamar again. Unable to withstand a second electrical overload, Malamar hit the deck with a thud, the boy's Slowpoke coming out to replace it.
If it weren't for Malamar's parting gift of Light Screen, there would be no point to continuing this battle. Saber had to work extra hard to electrocute the protected water-type, with even a point-blank burst not bringing the psychic-type down. The young Kantonian cried for a Water Pulse counterattack, which Saber had no chance to dodge. The Manectric now delirious from a potent headache, it turned around to get distance for another Discharge attack, but wound up tripping over the dopey Pokémon instead!
A sharp Zen Headbutt snapped Saber out of his trance, who was quick to electocute the Slowpoke to unconsciousness. This was the most electricity Saber had used in a single battle in a long time, and Josh could tell from the heavy breathing coming from his Pokémon. The young one's final Pokémon was a Kingler - a Pokémon Saber had to keep his distance from. Kingler were surprisingly fast, and their large pincers could crush near anything...especially the soft flesh of such a speedy Pokémon.
All Josh had to do was buy time until the Light Screen faded...but Kingler wasn't going to have any of this stalling. Just when the water-type got close enough to open its giant pincer and grab Saber, he let out one final Discharge...but not in time. The heavy pincer falling down on Saber as its wielder collapsed from paralytic shock, both of them had brought the other down. Josh's star Pokémon was not in very good shape, though the trainer at least shook hands with the boy before withdrawing the electric-type and running back to his cabin.

"They certainly are different. Our gyms didn't have the challenges and were pretty straight forward. I kind of like them though, it definitely keeps one on one's toes. The changing of teams is actually good experience for a ranger, learning to work with a variety of pokemon and understanding how to handled different challengers."
The ranger responded as Josh discussed the Arciel gyms. She nodded as he stood to take on the kid.
"Same to you and good luck with your battle."
She called as he went back to the battle deck. She decided to grab a couple macaroons for everyone then went to watch the water. It looked like they were only a few more hours from Ivy Island so there was still time to explore a little. After everyone finished their desert, the ranger headed back to her cabin to change into her swimsuit.
"You guys stay on deck, I'm going to go with Drago for a little swim alright?"
She informed her team then headed for the lower decks that were almost level with the water making it easy for trainers to mount up on their water types to go for a dive or swim. She tossed out Drago's pokeball then climbed aboard the sea serpent, nestling in between his head spikes.
The two moved away from the boat but kept pace with it so as to not get left behind. It was nice enjoying the afternoon sun and getting their minds off everything else going on. Until a mareanie fireed a pin missile at them. Drago quickly dodged almost unseating Liz from her perch. The ranger frowned and looked toward the poisonous water type.
"Oi Mareanie what gives?"
She inquired of the brutal star pokemon but only got another wave of pin missile in response. Drago roared now aggravated by the attack. The young woman frowned then gave him a pat and motioned to the mareanie.
"Well, she asked for it."
Suddenly a bolt of lightning shot from the sky and crashed into the mareanie sending waves of electricity through the poisonous water type. She shuddered but managed to shake it off and quickly began to Recover. Liz narrowed her eyes a little as Drago suddenly dived to avoid another pin missile attack.
Liz gripped the sea dragon's head spikes tightly as they circled the mareanie from below. After a moment Drago surged forward and threw the mareanie back. She glared at them and swiped at Drago with a poison jab. Drago dragon danced out of the way then retaliated with an aqua tail.
Mareanie however fired off liquidation to lessen the blow of aqual tail. She lashed out again with poison jab striking the gyarados in his tail. Drago roared as poison bubbled inside and let loose another thunderbolt which zapped mareanie hard this time paralyzing her.
Liz chucked out a Love Ball on the off chance she could capture the mareanie though she was more concerned with returning to the boat and taking care of that poisoning. Drago shuddered but was able to remain afloat as they waited to see if the ball would hold.
With the battle over, Josh observed another battle in progress for a few minutes, this one between an Espeon and Sylveon. From what action he could see, it looked like an intense, back and forth affair full of last-minute dodges. Both Pokémon looked to be quite speedy, which got him wondering into Espeon and Sylveon's racing qualities. Teleporting was against Federation rules, which is why it was rare to see a psychic-type on the track at all. Even without teleportation, though, Espeon were plenty fast runners. With it being much more affordable to breed giant Eevee in Arciel, raising a whole team of Eevee forms bred for racing might be worth the trouble.
Josh headed back to his cabin to take a look at his Pokémon's wounds. Saber and Bladestorm both were not in very good shape, particularly the Manectric. While he didn't want to neglect his star Pokémon's condition for so long, they had to be pretty close to Ivy Town by now. The Pokémon Center would probably be slammed right away, given the number of people on the ship, but it wouldn't be too bad after the sun went down. He could drop off his Pokémon, go out for supper, then come back when they were ready.
On the desk, there was a postcard with a pair of Orange Apricorns on top of it, used as paperweights. It simply read, "We appreciate your patronage," with an image of the vessel sailing into a beautiful sunset. While it was a nice surprise finding these, he wondered how much small "giveaways" like these factored into the price of his ticket. He was now glad he didn't book a return voyage - once Resheph had evolved, he would have no need of a ship like this anymore.

Success, the mareanie had been captured and now the pair hurried back to the ship. They passed a lone lapras who watched them curiously before continuing on her way. Liz climbed off Drago and hurried back up to her cabin where she had left her pack. Within the ranger dug out a Lum berry then leaned over the deck railing of her little balcony. Drago was resting on the water below, his serpentine body coiled tightly together.
"Drago, here."
The ranger alerted the gyarados who wearily glanced up then opened his jaws and allowed the young woman to drop the bright green lum better into his mouth. Drago chewed briefly and the berry went to work counter acting the poison in his system. She sighed knowing he'd be just fine now.
The ferry horn blew and she could see the island drawing closer. Though evening was falling they were nearly to port. However her pokemon were currently scattered across the decks so she set out to try and figure out where everyone ended up, as her psychic connection was difficult to extend across the entire ship, leaving Drago to enjoy the remaining swim to shore.
Josh heard the ferry's horn as well - a sign that Ivy Town's port was on the horizon. It indeed was, though with the sun already partially concealed behind Rainbow Ridge, it was hard to make out any of the city's features. "I have one hell of a weekend ahead of me," Josh sighed aloud, unable to keep from voicing his idle thoughts to an audience of only his Pokémon. Withdrawing the rest of his team, he headed out to the deck. "Guess I should make the rounds one last time."
He crossed the ship's battlegrounds, where there was a single Pokémon battle going. From the other side of the ship, a whirling Starmie leaped on deck, its core a menacing, dim violet. It charged Josh's way, a quick release of Twilight able to convince the wild to back off and battle his Pokémon instead of him. Not wanting to deal with the Absol at all, the water-type didn't hold back at all; it flew to the other side of the pool and started whirling its back rapidly again.
A huge wave of water formed from in front of the Starmie. Twilight and Josh ducked for cover on opposite sides of the ship. While the trainer was able to make it to safety, his Pokémon was not, the Starmie's wave of water pinning the Absol in front of the ship's guard rail and threatening to crush her. With Saber still unconscious and the rest of his team clearly not able to tumble with such a strong Pokémon, Josh flung his last remaining Net Ball at the wild and withdrew the now fainted Twilight, using it as a diversion to run to safety.
