While Elizabeth could easily traverse the waterway from Bass to Ivy on the backs of her own team, the ranger thought it would be nice to travel in a bit more comfort for such a long way. She reserved a room on the next ferry out and boarded at what, for some, could be considered an ungodly hour.
It was a pleasant day for water travel, a strong breeze blew the spring air all around the ranger and other passengers as they embarked on their day long trip. Naturally Liz had Tansy and Raya with her, the nice thing about traveling via ferry was the venusaur could accompany the ranger outside her pokeball. Liz still brought Drago with, letting the gyarados out to follow along after the ferry. There were various little island and other such things they might want to stop at along the way and being able to just leave the ferry when they pleased was necessary. Sure the ranger could've brought along one of her fliers but it was always nice to experience the water as it was meant to be experienced. In her opinion anyway.
The young woman also let Akio join the water serpent, the lumineon not getting much of a chance to swim freely. Coeus and Eran too were glad to be along for the ride, well for the most part. The umbreon had found a spot in the bunk she'd rented and curled up to sleep, not one for mornings, or day time in general really. Coeus was glad to have been rejoined with the trainer but the bookish alakazam would really rather have been left to study back at her farm or even her secret base.
Still the group settled in for their long voyage hopeful it wouldn't be too terribly boring and that perhaps they might run into some interesting trainers or pokemon along the way. Liz knew how restless passengers tended to get when cooped up and there was always potential for troublemakers too.

Each 'room' had it's own little balcony area that overlooked the water. Liz had opted for one of the cheaper rooms on the lower deck but it still had some decent perks. Here she had free access to Drago and Akio plus could watch for any interesting pokemon that happened to appear in the water.
One of which happened to poke his pink head up out of the water and seemed to be sizing up the large gyarados that was easily keeping pace with the ferry. The gorebyss swam closer causing Drago to bristle warily. Liz leaned over the railing of the balcony, keeping an eye on the approaching pink eel. The gorebyss was tiny compared to the oversized gyarados but it looked like he was trying to out pace the larger water serpent.
"I think he wants to race you Drago."
Liz suggested with a faint grin. Drago grunted and gazed down at the gorebyss looking skeptical. The ranger made a gentle shooing motion with her hands and grinned more broadly.
"Well go on and give it a go, you're not scared he'll beat you are you?"
She gently teased, not wanting to rile the sea dragon too much. Drago growled and shot the ranger a dirty look. Liz winked at him and gave him a thumbs up. Drago raised himself up to his full height and stared down the gorebyss who only seemed more intent on his challenge.
"Puny fish."
The gyarados grumbled then shot forward without a moment's hesitation. The gorebyss hurried after darting agilely through the water. Drago smirked as he surged forward, his powerful muscles pulling his bulk through the water with ease. Liz was practically bent over the rail to keep watching them as they passed the ferry and raced on ahead. Drago came to a stop when he reached a small island and turned back to watch the gorebyss struggle after him.
The sea dragon gave a satisfied roar and huffed looking down at the gorebyss smugly. The pink eel scowled as he finally caught up to Drago and in irritation lashed out with Brine. The water attack barely did anything but wet Drago's scales and act as a means of pissing the gyarados off. He roared again then lighting flashed and struck out toward the gorebyss... only to be deflected back toward the approaching ferry.
Both Drago and Liz blinked and looked to the hull of the ship. Close to the edge of the water a pincurchin was stuck to the hull and happily munching away at some seaweed that'd gotten stuck to the ship. The ferry was now even with Drago and the gorebyss and the ranger shared a look with the gyarados.
"Huh, maybe Lightning Rod?"
The young woman wasn't familiar with the odd little electric type but that was the only ability she knew of that could redirect a Thunderbolt. Though by now the gorebyss had decided he wasn't interested in trading blows with the gyarados and dived back under the waves. The pincurchin didn't seem to have even noticed the electric attack and was still focused on his lunch. Drago pouted as he swam back to Liz's balcony. The ranger gave him a sympathetic look and reached out to give him a pat.
"Hey, at least you won the race right?"
She stated with a grin but the gyarados only huffed dejectedly. Liz stifled a chuckle as she turned to look back out across the water and Drago continued alongside the ferry sulking.

Now that they were a good bit from the Bass docks the ranger figured they ought to stretch their legs a little. She kept contact with Drago and Akio as she, Tansy, Raya and Coeus went to wander through the ferry decks. Eran of course stayed where he was and continued to nap. Of Liz's dark types, Eran was the most accepting and supportive of her telepathic connection thus distance wasn't really a problem for them. She expected their closeness was largely due to him being raised from an egg, unlike most of her other dark types who all had their own varying degrees of allowing her telepathic access.
Upon leaving the room, Elizabeth noticed something shiny sitting off to one side of the hall. Upon closer inspection she discovered it was some Arciel Powder. Strange stuff but she tucked it away and figured she'd keep an eye out to see if anyone had lost it. The group continued their walk until they reached the upper deck where they could see the ocean spread out for miles ahead of them.
They still had quite a ways to traverse before reaching Ivy where the ranger had heard a Fossil Lab was located. The ranger had acquired a couple fossils of interest and hoped that perhaps they'd be able to revive them for her. She'd have to be patient though, this ferry ride was going to last awhile.
Josh was in his small cabin on the lower level, still catching his breath from barely having made the ferry. He had heard there was going to be an aquatic race off the coast of Ivy Town soon. While he had plenty of other business there, including getting that red prism of his looked at, an aquatic race would be cool to enter, too - he had never done one of those, and they were only typically held during the summer months. The question was, would Illumina be ready in time? She was still a Chinchou, and there was no way she could bear Josh's weight until after she evolved.
He reviewed the ferry's activity schedule - it seemed that there were many amenities aboard the vessel, including a board game room. Maybe he'd find some people to sling cardboard with later in the day! For now, all he wanted to do was nap. Resheph wouldn't allow that, though - the excited Dratini was quick to uncurl herself around Josh's shoulders and fly outside the room to the main hall the moment she heard footsteps. "Resheph, you can't just fly off like that!" Josh rushed outside his room, only to see the Dratini hanging upside down from an exposed pipe, greeting a familiar face. "Hey, I remember you!" Josh greeted the familiar-looking Ranger. "You're..." His voice trailed off. "I'm sorry...I'm so bad with names!"

Well now who was this? The dratini appeared almost from nowhere and attached themselves to an overhead pipe. The ranger tilted her head and smiled at the little dragon thinking of her own Dragonite still awaiting import.
"Well hello there, and what are you up to Dratini?"
The ranger inquired with a raised brow. Obviously the dragon must belong to someone, it was extremely unlikely you'd find a wild dratini out here on the water. Tansy smiled happily at the dratini and waved a vine in greeting whilst Raya turned her gaze toward the sound of the dragon's approaching trainer having noted the aura of another in the next room.
When Josh appeared Elizabeth blinked and raised both brows in surprise. She hadn't expected to meet the young racer here and gave him a friendly smile in greeting. Raya crossed her arms and smirked a little giving a nod to the young man. The lucario was the only one who'd met Josh before as Tansy had yet to have cleared import prior to their previous travels.
"Oh hi! Yea, Liz. And it was, um... Josh right?"
Liz inquired pretty sure she was remembering that right. She chuckled then gestured to the dratini as she looked to the racer with a grin.
"I take it this one's with you then?"
She turned back towards the trio with her and motioned to each one, starting off with Raya.
"Don't know if you remember but this is Raya, and that's Tansy there and -"
"Coeus. Pleasure."
The alakazam interrupted the ranger as he addressed Josh himself. Liz glanced back at the psychic fox with a raised brow. He returned the look with a blank stare. Both Tansy and Raya exchanged looks and shook their heads.
"I'm perfectly capable of speaking for myself."
Coeus retorted, still a bit agitated about being stuck on this boat. The ranger sighed and gave Josh an apologetic look.
"Sorry about that, marine travel doesn't really agree with him."
She chuckled then looked the racer over. Coeus remained looking surly while Tansy bobbed her head happily and grinned at Josh.
Once Josh had sighted Liz, he registered that it seemed she had quite a team, crowding up the hallway with her Venusaur and Alakazam. Not that Josh's team hadn't grown - they were just way too big inside the cabin area. "She is," he answered the ranger as Resheph outstretched more, still hanging upside down right in Liz's face. Josh scowled at the young dragon. "Can you please behave? I know you're excited, but you can't just be right up in someone else's face like that." The carefree Pokémon shook her head, then floated back toward Josh, landing and gently coiling around his shoulders. "I tell you what, if she was a Dragonair, I wouldn't be on this ship. That or Illumina, my Chinchou, was evolved. She's on the cusp of it...I can tell."
Just after Coeus cut Liz off, Josh flinched as the Alakazam's voice rang directly in his mind. "I'm okay...he just s-s-startled me is all," he stuttered. "I'm not around psychic Pokémon very much. Not used to them." He slowly approached Tansy and gently pat the grass-type's head. "Charizard would be much more my style, but I know a girl back home that would love to have a Venusaur. She looks strong." If Josh was good at two things, they were racing and knowing when a rival trainer outmatched him. If they were to have a battle, Raya would destroy his entire team. Then again, his squad was designed to run the track first, battle second.
"I am - have several orders of business there. Resheph, please?" The Dratini floated about Josh's shoulders long enough for him to set his bag down. He pulled out a hexagonal, red prism he had found in the Luna Sanctum to the east of the sea, beyond the mountains. It appeared crystalline, about the size of a small human's fist, with the number 20 etched into its largest face. "I went hunting for Pokémon up in the mountains, and found this. Might be a form of ancient currency. I've heard there are archaeologists that study Pokémon fossils - maybe they'll be able to tell me what this is." He paused a moment. "What are you going to do for the trip? There's supposedly a card and board game hall on the upper deck - might spend the morning up there."

The ranger chuckled not bothered by the dratini's close proximity. She'd had to forgo the concept of 'personal space' long ago. Liz reached out to caress the dratini under the chin before she returned to Josh's side. The brunette glanced back to her trio who really did dominate the hallway. While it was designed to allow some larger pokemon through, Tansy was still a bit on the big side for the inner halls. But of course the slightly claustrophobic grass type utterly hated being inside her pokeball, not that she was really all that thrilled being below deck either.
"Ah she's fine, when you've raised a few hatchlings you tend to get used to them being too curious for their own good. Plus she's just lovely and I can tell she's going to be a beautiful dragonair."
The ranger grinned and gave a wink to the dratini. She nodded in agreement with Josh and gestured toward the outer wall.
"Yea, I've got my gyarados Drago out on the water now, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to enjoy the cabin life a bit and we had some fun trolling around the waters on Route 3. I tend to spend so much time on the road, it's nice to kind of spoil myself a little ya know? Plus sometimes it's necessary having a ranger on board, in case there's any trouble."
She shrugged certainly not looking the part of one who spent much time 'spoiling herself' what with her hair tied up in a messy ponytail and tucked up into her military cap. Not to mention the rough cargo pants she always wore along with a slightly baggy charcoal gray tank top under her faded denim jacket. The ranger rarely worried much about her appearance.
"Oh right, yea, I sometimes forget most people aren't used to telepaths. I'm a decent telepath myself so it sometimes feels strange actually speaking with people. It kind of just becomes second nature to you after a bit."
The ranger explained as she gave Coeus a sideways glance. The stuffy fox narrowed his eyes.
"I'm not going to keep silent just to make the less intellectual more comfortable."
Raya reached over and gave the alakazam a slight smack on the back of the head. The lucario wasn't one to let her teammates get away with snarkiness if she could help it. Liz stifled a chuckle as she reached back to stroke the venusaur when Josh mentioned her.
"I do like Charizard as well, but Tansy here was my very first pokemon. She's been with me for a long time. I kind of spoil her a bit, letting her travel out with me. She absolutely hates her pokeball, even if she's a bit too big now to really go everywhere with me."
Tansy huffed and gently butted Liz's thigh with her nose. The ranger smirked then turned to the object Josh had revealed. She raised both brows and gazed at the object in interest.
"Wow that is fascinating. I hope the lab can help you identify if. We're actually looking to stop by there as well. I've been fortunately enough to stumble on a few fossils and have heard they're able to revive them there."
Elizabeth shrugged then tilted her head to one side at Josh's suggestion. Coeus rolled his eyes at the idea causing Liz to glance at him and sigh.
"Hey you know you can go back to the cabin with Eran if you want."
She stated a tad sharply causing the alakazam to scowl. She knew the grumpy fox felt uncomfortable around dark types and would much prefer being able to people watch if he couldn't read something.
"And you know, he's not even the worst of some of my pokemon."
Liz added in a lowered, conspiratorial tone. Her comment caused Raya to grunt and narrow her eyes, the lucario knowing exactly to whom Liz was referring. Tansy chuckled, the laid back venusaur being the sort to simply get along with everyone and finding the conflict bemusing. Liz nodded now in response to Josh's previous suggestion.
"Yea we were actually on our way up there. Should be some spectacular views as well."
The young woman motioned for Josh to lead the way as she and her trio followed after him.
Josh felt flattered to hear that about Resheph. "...Thanks." The Dratini perked up at hearing Liz's comment about her being beautiful when she evolves. "I actually plan on keeping her a Dragonair - Dragonite aren't great racing Pokémon. Sure they're fast, but I've heard they're really hard to handle and can be overly prideful." Resheph became beady-eyed at Josh's stereotypical comment. "Sorry, girl - I didn't mean you specifically." His words still felt like a Poison Sting through the tail to the young Dratini. She would get over it eventually.
Just as Liz semi-apologized to Josh for Coeus' intrusion into his mind, the Alakazam spoke to him again in a condescending tone. The racer covered his forehead with both hands and let out a shout that reverberated down the hallway. A couple of crew checked on the two, ultimately coming to the conclusion that everything was okay. "I dunno how you can put up with a voice in your head like that! It's so weird!"
When Liz mentioned that Coeus wasn't the worst of her Pokémon as the two started walking down the hallway to the ship's main deck, Josh spoke up. "I can relate to that. I've always wanted to raise a Skarmory. When I finally caught one, I found she was the most bloodthirsty Pokémon I've ever seen. All she wants to do is battle, battle, battle. I'd have flown across the sea on her, but she gave me that 'don't even think about it' look." Josh tried to imitate Bladestorm's stare of intimidation, like that of an unhappy spouse. He could come nowhere close to matching the steel-type's threatening stare. "Kind of like that. Maybe. Gotta be really careful or she'll try to battle every wild Pokémon in sight - can't have her do that."
Josh smiled when he heard Liz was headed up to the board game room as well. He was never without a deck or two of cards on him, plus there would be plenty of other games up there. "Wonder what all's up there? Either way, it's on the other side of the ship, so we have a bit of a walk ahead of us." He paused, opening the external door for Liz so she could walk onto the open deck first. "Maybe I can show you the rest of my Pokémon along the way - wait until you see Saber now!"

"It's funny how drastically a dragonair changes when they become a dragonite. Though one nice thing about flying a dragonite it's a bit like riding in a luxury car, they might be a touch big and bulky but they're certainly comfortable. Temperament can certainly vary, dragons themselves can be unpredictable, though I raised my own dragonite from a dratini and she's a big sweetie."
Elizabeth chuckled thinking of Avery who was still waiting to clear customs. She understood though, with so many of her pokemon having been raised to their final forms and trained as fighters for military work, they could be considered a bit on the dangerous side. Plus the governing officials didn't know them like Liz did, nor did they really know this new resident that would be in charge of them, so it was only prudent they were cautious about allowing so many potential weapons into their country.
"I'll try to help block him some for you, though I'm still mostly an adept when it comes to these things and a natural born psychic like Coeus can override me."
She offered causing Coeus to scowl. He didn't say anything however seeming to have finally decided that if his input wasn't appreciated he wouldn't provide it. Raya sighed knowing the grouchy intellectual wasn't usually this bad but was just put out about being stuck on the boat. Liz nodded understandingly when Josh mentioned his skarmory and smirked a little at his impression.
"Skarmory can be rather predatory, but it'll be worth it when you get a handle on her. I was given a skarmory when I joined my home region's military and he was already condition to follow orders to the letter. I've gotten him to loosen up a bit though since we've retired, but I'm always glad to know he has my back. My biggest problem is my Zoroark. He was raised by my home region's northern neighbors with whom we were at war. Thus he's still rather hostile overall and enjoys trying to torment myself and others. Naturally I can't get through to him as easily since he can reject my psychic connection so we have to do things the old fashioned way. Though Raya here's been a big help in keeping him in check."
Liz gave Raya a pat on the shoulder and the lucario smirked. The steel jackal almost had too much fun keeping the zoroark 'in check'. Tansy chuckled as well though she wished they would all simply get along. The ranger dipped her head in gratitude to Josh as she stepped out onto the open deck. Her trio followed after Josh and spread out a bit now that they had a little more wiggle room. She grinned at the mention of Josh's other pokemon and nodded.
"Yea I'd like that. And Saber was your... electrike right?"
She inquired trying to recall who was who, yet it seemed the presence of the two trainers and their pokemon had attracted the attention of a couple bored beach kids. One raced over eagerly as he pointed straight at Elizabeth and announced loudly.
"Hi I'm Zev! And you! I wanna battle you! I'll bet you can't take my Millie!"
And with that the boy flung a pokeball at the deck and released a surprisingly large milotic. Millie, as the boy had called her, shook herself then rose up to tower over the group and fanned her tail threateningly. The ranger raised a brow and looked from the boy to the milotic then back to Tansy.
"Up for some exercise girl?"
Liz inquired of the venusaur who bobbed her head and lumbered forward to face Millie. The kid looked a tad surprised as the large poisonous plant took the field as though he hadn't really expected the ranger to use her best counter against the water serpent. Still he pursed his lips and rubbed his hands together.
"Okay Millie! Rain Dance!"
Suddenly the sky opened up and downpour covered their portion of the deck. Liz sighed and lowered her hat over her eyes to shield them from the rain then crossed her arms not exactly thrilled by now being soaked. Tansy however swayed back and forth liking the refreshing rainfall not at all bothered by the change in the weather.
"Give it a minute, Grassy Terrain."
Liz said nothing and simply relayed her instructions telepathically to the venusaur. Really, Tansy rarely needed much instruction from Liz at this point. She and Raya knew pretty much what their trainer was going to do when it came to a battle. Tansy lowered her body to the ground and her bloom began to spill out a green sort of energy that rapidly enveloped them all.
"Alright then! Millie Coil up!"
Zev called out to the milotic who wrapped her body tightly together, coiling up and increasing her power and defense. Liz smirked and dipped her head, smart move on the kid's part. She flicked her gaze to Tansy noting the venusaur was crouched and anticipating the next move.
"Alright, let's light things up."
From Tansy's bloom soft, fiery light poured out and rose up toward the sky clearing away the rain and bringing out the full brightness of the sun. Zev appeared confused that his rain was gone but he just frowned then pointed towards Tansy.
"Well fine! Hydro Pump Millie!"
Elizabeth narrowed her eyes as she watched the milotic rear back and suddenly fire a torrent of water with incredible pressure. Tansy braced herself as the powerful hit slammed into her and shoved her back a good foot or so. The water attack however hardly phased the venusaur who now moved with surprising speed. Her Chlorophyll had kicked in and now the venusaur's was reacting much quicker than the milotic.
"Growth."
Now the ranger could likely finish this battle in one movement but she wanted to see what the kid would try next. Tansy's bloom glowed a bright green and doubled in size the sunlight increasing her overall power. Zev scowled and looked at Millie.
"Quick, Hydro Pump again!"
Liz was a tad surprised the kid didn't call for more rain, however the battle could easily devolve into a weather back and forth if he had. Perhaps Zev was hoping to dish out as much damage as he could before Tansy attacked. Unfortunately Tansy wasn't about to simply stand and take the blow this time. Millie reared back for the powerful water attack once more and released the flood straight for the venusaur who this time sidestepped it with her unusual speed. Hyrdo Pump wasn't the most reliable attack as it was and trying to hit the venusaur now would prove much more difficult.
"Hey! That's not fair!"
Elizabeth simply smiled at the kid and shrugged before returning her focus to the battle. Tansy already knew what was coming, Grassy Terrain, Sunny Day and Growth, it all added up to one thing. Liz dipped her head and the venusaur's bloom rapidly pulled in a massive amount of sunlight. The solar energy that gathered was forcefully released and fired straight for Millie blasting her back and bathing her in pure sunlight.
"No Millie!"
Zev cried as he hurried over to his fallen milotic. Tansy turned and looked to Liz who gave the venusaur an approving nod. She walked over to Zev and reached down to pat the boy's shoulder giving him an encouraging smile. Zev looked put out as he recalled his poor Millie and shot Liz a dirty look.
"You didn't tell me you were so strong!"
He stated in an accusatory tone. Liz bit back a chuckle then winked at Zev.
"Well I am a ranger, I need to be strong to be able to protect people like you. But you did really well Zev, with a little more specialize training and your Millie will be a terrific battler! Like did you know Millie can learn ice type moves? If you can get yourself a Blizzard or Ice Beam TM you'll have no trouble with grass types like Tansy."
The young woman explained as she ruffled the kid's hair. Zev still looked put out but then nodded as he stood up. He held out a hand to Liz who grinned as she took it and gave it a firm shake.
"Well thanks for the battle miss. But watch out, I'll beat you next time!"
He warned and a faint grin pulled at his lips. Elizabeth chuckled and nodded in approval.
"I'm sure you will kid and I'll look forward to battling you again."
The ranger winked as Zev waved and ran off to find his friend. Tansy stretched as she slowed back down, the sunlight returning to normal. Liz reached over and gave her a scritch between the ears causing the large poisonous plant to rumble in pleasure. Their attention returned to Josh and his own little challenger curious as to the outcome of their match.
Josh was a bit surprised to hear Liz say flying on a Dragonite's back was comfortable and easy - Dragonair seemed like it would be easier to have more precise control over. Plus, Dragonair were one of the few Pokémon that could swim just as well as it could fly, and even seamlessly jump from sea to sky! "You've raised one before?" he asked Liz, Resheph perking up at the mention of Dragonite. "I might have to take you up on it. I kind of want to fly on one for myself and see how it is." The young one seemed content to remain a Dragonair when she grew up as well, not at all objecting to hearing Josh would avoid fully evolving her.
"I figured as much," Josh answered as the two headed out of the cabin area and onto the main deck. It appeared there were several trainer battles in progress. While the battlegrounds weren't quite regulation size, they were good enough to hold battles on. The black-haired young man was surprised at the variety of amenities on the ship - the treatment he was getting on the ship was almost like a cruise. There was so much to do. "Skarmory are a huge problem in northeast Johto. Got attacked by several of them on my way to Blackthorn City - they require all dragon Pokémon captured in the region to be registered with them."
Once there was plenty of space, Josh released most of his team - Saber and Aslan, a breathtaking Manectric and Pyroar, respectively. He also showed Nitro and Twilight, Pokémon Liz may have remembered. All four wore tack that looked like a comfortable, natural fit, particularly the Pyroar's; it was evident some serious cash went into that equipment. The Absol was emotionless as ever, the act of shifting her eyes toward Liz the only greeting she would give her. "Saber's all grown up now. He's already been on the racing circult. He's really fun to race with and can turn on a 10-Pen coin!"
Just as he was about to show Liz coverage from one of his past races, she had gotten involved in a battle with a very young trainer. His brother was not at all intimidated by Josh's big Pokémon. Well then. Perhaps Liz would get to see the Skarmory in action. Josh recalled the rest of his team, Resheph, included, and matched the young one's Gorebyss with Bladestorm, his Skarmory.
The two squared off, Gorebyss submerging into the small pool in the center of the battleground. Bladestorm took to the sky, circling the pond while accounting for the vessel's movement. Her superior vision let her see where her foe was, even through the water. While circling, she pelted the Gorebyss with star-shaped, heat-seeking rays that hit from every possible angle. The waiting game was not an option - the young trainer's Pokémon had to make a move. The pool and surrounding area were beginning to fill with metal shards shed from the steel-type as well. And make a move the aquatic Pokémon did.
With a quick jump than caught even Bladestorm off guard, the water-type raced upward toward the metal menace, right in between her legs. The Skarmory let out a shriek, but redoubled her focus. The battle dragged on for quite some time, Josh's partner eventually coming out on top. She looked rather exhausted, landing next to Josh and stumbling about. He did his best to gently pat her neck before recalling her, tagging her out for Saber. Not only could the Manectric race, but he could battle something fierce, too.
The Finneon was really big for its kind - larger even than the Gorebyss. Expecting the fish to have the strength to back its size up, too, Josh wasted no time, immediately commanding for his Manectric to use Electro Ball. What a perfect move for a racer to have - an electric attack that gets stronger the faster its user can run. A sparkling sphere formed over Saber's head. With a swift nod, the orb flew toward Finneon, Matt looking rather worried about the Finneon's condition.
On the precipice of fainting, a radar-like "ping" rang in the ears of the trainer and Pokémon. Saber squinted his eyes shut, eventually shaking it off and firing a follow-up Electro Ball that sent the Finneon packing, this time for real. Matt didn't look too thrilled, saying something along the lines that electric Pokémon weren't fair. Josh reassured the child that the battle with Gorebyss was one of the better ones he had in a long time, and could have gone either way.
"Sorry that took so long," Josh addressed Liz again, bringing back Saber and letting out Resheph again, the Dratini content to lounge around his shoulders. "Shall we head upstairs?"

The appearance of Josh's other pokemon caused the ranger to grin broadly. She noted his once young pokemon had grown into rather impressive specimens. She returned the slight nod of greeting with Twilight as did Raya who recalled the stoic absol. Coeus however scowled a little at the absol and kept his distance. Of course Tansy happily greeted the others with a smile and pleasant head bob.
"You've done a great job raising them Josh. And your Skarmory's something else, she'd likely give Chisulo - my skarmory - a run for his money."
Off an open side of the deck Liz could see Drago and Akio on the water. It looked like they were investigating a snoozing clamperl. The ranger kept an eye on them though really had no interest in the clamperl.
"Don't bother it if it doesn't bother you okay?"
She commented to the gyarados with a warning tone. Drago hardly even glanced toward the boat but she could sense his compliance. Liz smirked to herself and she nodded to Josh as she took to the stairs. On the way up an alert popped up on her phone. The ranger pulled it up finding an emergency broadcast going out to all. Her eyes widened and she looked toward Josh and the others with her mouth slightly agape in shock.
"Thanks," Josh accepted the compliment, Bladestorm's Poké Ball shaking upon seeing the top of a Cloyster shell sticking out of the water near a small islet the vessel passed near. Even after taking such a beating at the hands of that young Trainer, she still wanted more? He gave the top of the Poké Ball a sharp tap. "I swear..." he muttered, loudly enough Liz could probably hear him as the two finished crossing the ship's battling area. He chuckled as Liz's Gyarados seemed similarly aggressive toward every wild Pokémon in sight. When he heard the word about Ultra Beasts, Josh stopped dead in his tracks.
"Wait, here?!" Josh exclaimed, likely getting several bystanders to check their alerts as well. "Not a lot we can do about it on the ship other than spread the word, and it seems like there's a lot of chatter it already. Look - even the battles on the deck stopped!" There were two in-progress battles that were halted...perhaps even completely stopped, a Hypno and Blastoise just standing there watching each other amid their panicked trainers. "Well...until we get off the ship, there's not a lot we can do. But as a registered trainer taking on the Gym Challenge, I have to do my civic duty. Even if it isn't to Johto..."
Josh flung open the door to the gaming hall - everything looked normal. There were two people sitting down to a Kantonian tile set. Looks like they were trying to find two more people for a game. It was a game a lot like gin rummy, but with a rich history going back many centuries. Thankfully he remembered how to count to nine in Kantonian, which is all he needed to know to be able to read the ancient-language tiles. "It seems like people here are oblivious...we should probably spread the word, Liz!"

The ranger nodded as she hurried up the steps. She was a little surprised the ferry didn't have an intercom system to announce such a broadcast but perhaps they were trying to keep people calm. Of course with technology these days, you could get news in an instant and trying to regulate it was almost impossible. On top of this news, Elizabeth could feel a headache coming on. And even Raya and Coeus were looking a bit strained.
"Yea, that's a solid plan. But let's take it slow, we don't want to panic anyone."
The ranger cautioned as she approached the pair playing tiles. One was an obvious sailor sort who'd been sizing up the two of them since they entered as Josh's entry hadn't exactly been subtle. Liz rubbed her temple but dipped her head in greeting to the two.
"Evenin' folks. Just wanted to ask if you'd heard the recent news broadcast regarding the Ultra Beast situation?"
Sometimes Liz slipped into her natural southern drawl when speaking in an official manner. She didn't have a very thick accent but one could tell she wasn't exactly 'city folk'. The pair exchanged glances looking a bit bewildered by the news. The aged sailor slapped a weathered hand on the table then stood and crossed his meaty arms as he eyed Elizabeth.
"Ultra Beasts? Bah, are you two landlubbers trying to stir up trouble?"
He growled and leaned forward into Elizabeth's space. The ranger frowned and narrowed her eyes giving the guy a 'Are you serious right now?' look. His companion however didn't seem so sure about the sailor's skepticism.
"Jian, wait, look there that young lady has a ranger's badge and check out the pokemon with her. I don't think she's trying to jerk you around."
Elizabeth did always sport her Arciel ranger badge clipped to her belt just before her pokeballs, not to mention the Arciel ranger patch on the shoulder of her jacket and the front of her military cap. However the sailor still didn't look convinced and he brandished a pokeball at her.
"A 'ranger' eh? Well then why don't you show me how tough you are little ranger?"
He challenged with a smirk then released a kingler on the field. Liz sucked in a deep breath and forced herself not to roll her eyes. Raya scowled at the man and glanced sideways at Liz. The ranger shook her head then winced as the movement aggravated her headache. Liz looked behind her and nodded to Tansy, the venusaur still the best match against the water type. Raya grunted a bit displeased she couldn't take the field.
"Don't think that grass type'll beat my Claws so easily."
The male laughed and Liz just sighed. She nodded to Tansy and held out a Pinap Berry for her as the ranger closed her eyes for a minute. Trying to retain her telepathic connection with the others was getting more difficult. Thus she quickly reached out to the pokemon not currently with her, Eran, Drago and Akio.
"Could everyone please make their way back to me?"
Tansy gazed at the ranger in concern but turned back to face the sailor's kingler. The battle was a quick flurry of attacks, the kingler's array of attacks comprised mostly of 'wail on 'em' sorts. Slam, Hammer Arm, Razor Shell, the normal type attack Slam being the only one to have more than a marginal affect on the venusaur. Tansy naturally started with Grassy Terrain and Sunny Day then Growth powering up to be fairly certain of a one shot. All throughout the kingler continued to wail on her with the fairly ineffective attacks but she withstood them. She bolstered herself with a Synthesis before striking hard with Frenzy Plant.
The massive roots pummeled the kingler quite soundly causing the sailor's jaw to drop. Liz gave Tansy a tense smile then looked to the sailor with a raised brow. He blinked then recalled the kingler still looked surprised.
"So, um, what were you guys saying about Ultra Beasts?"
Josh couldn't blame the older sailor for his reaction to the Ultra Beast news. It sounded way too wild to be true...but indeed it was, having gone out on official news outlets' social media pages. Some people in the game room picked up whatever games they were playing and headed toward the room's entrance, where the ranger and trainer were standing. "It says here that overnight this morning, an Ultra Wormhole opened above the Golden Tree in the Sequoia Forest, and Ultra Beasts began pouring out of it. They're reporting numbers an entire order of magnitude less than the last Ultra Beast crisis, but that doesn't make the situation any less dire. I don't think we'll be able to defeat them on our own. We're going to need help from..." Josh trailed off. He wanted to say "legendary Pokémon", but couldn't bring himself to say it. "Well, there's nothing we can do about it until we hit land. I just want to spread the word to as many people as possible, so we can be as prepared as we can in the event of an attack."
Just as he had finished, Josh heard--and felt--a loud crash starboard, followed by a shout of the Pokémon name Sharpedo. "Illumina!" the amateur racer shouted, rushing back down the stairs to see it was not just one, but several Sharpedo that were engaged with Pokémon trained by the vessel's crew. There was a particular Sharpedo mere yards from the ship brutalizing Josh's Chinchou. Her feelers glowed so brightly that it blinded every Pokémon and human in sight. When the light had faded, Illumina had evolved into a Lanturn that looked like it was ready to brawl with this Sharpedo.
The intimidating water-type flailed about in the water, splashing water everywhere around itself with its sharp fins. A small jet of water from its rear propelled the big-mouthed wild toward Illumina with impressive speed, latching onto the newly-evolved Lanturn and flailing about again to try to dig his jaws deeper into her much softer scales. This did leave the Sharpedo open to a point-blank Electro Ball from Illumina, both Pokémon striking heavy blows. It didn't look like either would be able to continue through another of those rough attacks - Josh pulled out a Net Ball, trying to end the battle right there. Sharpedo would be an amazing Pokémon for an aquatic race, if he could get past its horrible temperament.
