How would you describe yourself? A trail of dust and dirt seemed to signify the path of the man thay took the interview chair. He sat with his legs crossed beneath him but a warm smile on his face. "I'm a man of the earth. Like to live my life trying to live alongside nature instead of impending it. Like to stay somewhat out of the way and let things be, Jjust simply be happy to be a part of it.” He breathed in a large sigh of relaxation at the statement. “Basically I try to make sure life keeps flowing the way it’s supposed to. With people advancing they way they do it’s important to slow down and make sure we aren’t destroying the gift we have in the first place.” Why are you interested in the class you've chosen? “What always caught my eye about Rangers is they way that they view Pokemon as partners not as tools. I admire the dedication to harnessing a Pokemon’s natural ability to do good for the Region, the environment, shoot even Pokemon.” A gleam took to Ollie’s eyes as he closed his hand in front of him in determination. “A couple years back there was a wild Magmar that had started a forest fire near my families home. If it hadn’t been for the rangers coming in to calm it down and save the forest our house would have gone up for sure,” Running his hand across the stubble on his chin he remembered that terrifying night. The confusion and the chaos but the Rangers and the partners had come in to return peace. “I guess before that I was always trying to find my right spot in the world and it just became apparent after that what I had to do.” Why are you interested in training in Arciel? Why not another region? “Arciel is home.” Gesturing to a small pin on his belt featuring the stylized likeness of a Bidoof. “Pop always taught me to have national pride so I’d say it’s pretty deep rooted. It’s natural to want to keep something safe when you care about it right?” He rubbed a piece of cloth over the pin to assure any dust or dirt that might have accumulated was cleared from its glossy finish. “Besides I know a good portion of our region. But there’s still so much that I haven’t explored so it’s a chance to get to know my home so much deeper. Sort of a different way of getting to know an old favorite book.” What do you consider your best attributes? They can be physical, mental, social, or anything else. Ollie looked to the side for a moment of reflection but responded with seemingly little effort. “Compassion and empathy. I try to view things from the perspective of others and tap in to how they feel and what they need most to thrive.” He seemed to be viewing something far off as he spoke. More blindly probing himself for the answer than regurgitating a previous thought. “It’s important to recognize that you’re a much smaller part of a larger whole. See where your cog fits into the great workings of the world and see what you can do to try and make that run a little bit better. Help the other people around you have a little bit of an easier time getting their own turns in.” He meshed his fingers together simulating cogs as they turn. “Guess I’d say I’m just a really good team player.” What do you consider your worst attributes? Be honest, now! “I can be a little spacey I guess.” He shrugged for a moment brushing some hair from his face. “Trying to keep an eye on the big picture leaves a lot of smaller stuff in the blind spots so I can miss the obvious from time to time. It gets the better of me, I admit. But sometimes it’s alright to lean on others to keep you grounded.” “Oh!” Shaking some dried dirt off his pants he accumulated a small pile of sand on the floor in front of him. “I get some complaints about hygiene. I suppose I’m just not as adverse to a healthy layer of dirt as most.” What was your childhood like? How was school? “I had a good upbringing. Pine Town is really a great example of that Arcielian hospitality and kindness. Grew up getting to know everyone in the town, real friendly bunch, and not have all that hustle and bustle of the big city. Spend a lot of time in the mountains there growing up. I’ve always been a fan of nature walks. Bless my mother and her worrying for me when I’d just go wander off for a few hours when I was a boy. More than once her and Pop found me off on a little hike oblivious to the scare I gave them.” Ollie laughed warmly at the memories. Some of his best times growing up had been on those walks. “School wasn’t too bad but my grades weren’t the best. Head in the clouds too much. Was hard to really crack into the books when there was so much to experience first hand.” Blood rushed to his cheeks in a bit of embarrassment about his struggles with school. He had always worried that it would hold him back though he’d gotten so far no problem. “I was happy to graduate. Homework and that kind of thing isn’t my forte. I’m more of a practical applications guy.” How is your relationship with your family? Ollie’s warm smile from earlier paled in comparison to the one he wore now. “Home is amazing. I’m an only child, have a loving pare of parents. They raised me well despite my best efforts.” He laughed along with his own joke nudging his interviewer to do the same. “Pop is a miner. Has been since long before I was a twinkle in his eye. Mom kept the home. We kept a small garden. Some chickens. Lived a bit more off the beaten path as normal. Pop liked to fancy himself a homesteader but we tried to explain living that close to town and running to the grocery store said otherwise.” He laughed here again. Wiping a small tear from the corner of his eye. “But it was nice. Pop was a man of the earth too. When I wasn’t wandering off on my own he’d take me for long walks. Into the mountains, down route six. Liked to tell me about the way things were. Why Pokemon behaved the way they did. How to tell it was going to rain by the leaves of the trees turning upside down. How when the Starly took to roost in the inner branches of trees there would be a particularly blustery storm. I swear the man once predicted an early winter from looking at a Bidoof’s ears but I couldn’t tell you how.” Of course looking back his Pop was probably trying to pull his leg and got lucky but Ollie enjoyed spreading the legend of the man. He believed the story of a person could carry miles further than their actions. “Mom was real down to earth. Strong but stern woman who would scold you for chasing the chickens round and send you off with a pat of the butt and a cookie in your mouth. She had a hell of a green thumb too. I swear she’s resurrected almost every plant I’ve tried to grow on my own.” What do you like to do for fun? “Watching.” Ollie answered shortly, a thoughtful look on his face. “People watching, Pokemon watching. Nothing shady I swear just like watching People walking through a town while you’re sitting on a bench. Or observing people on a train. I like to try and peace together what’s going on. What they are talking about who they are. Come up with little stories and you get a surprising good read on body language. Pokemon are a lot more fun to watch but you have to be a bit more tricky. It’s always best if they don’t know you’re watching but you get to learn their own little language. It’s same as people. Body language says everything. You can see who’s the head Murkrow in a murder. See how much a Butterfree cares for her Caterpie when she dotes over them. It’s a lot of why I came to love Pokemon. They’re a lot easier to read them people a lot of the time.” Moving his feet down to the floor Olliver leaned forward and placed his chin thoughtfully on his hands. It was always harder to put together what one enjoyed when put on the spot. “I like getting my hands dirty. Really digging into a project and putting in effort to make something happen with your own too hands. I don’t really get sports but I’ve always enjoyed playing hacky sack with my friends at school. I still play now and then but it’s hard to find people to play with.” What are your feelings on romance? The blush came back to Ollie’s cheeks and he tucked his feet back under his legs. He could feel the pressure of the uncomfortable conversation his mother had forced onto him time and time again. “Yeah I’d like to settle down at some point. Pop up a house of my own. Have a few kids. But what’s the rush? I’m still pretty young. Live with my folks. I’m still finding myself so that’s where a lot of my focus right now. If i come across a girl that catches my attention then great but I’m not looking for it.” What are your goals for the future? Short-term and long-term. “For right now I’m really just looking to get myself established with the Rangers. I only just joined up a few months ago but I want to prove my worth and really help to make a difference out there.” He spoke with a determined tone. This was something that had been calling to him and after preparing himself he was eager to prove himself. :”The harder I try the more I’ll learn to work with Pokemon to really insight that sort of a difference. Keep people and Pokemon from hurting the wildlife and environment from anyone looking to seize it for their own gain. In the long run I can’t say I’ve really put any thought into it. Honestly I’m just hoping that this Ranger path really works well for me and I can really head off on my own path. Get out of my parents house, mayhe, it would be nice.” He laughed lightly breaking the more serious subject matter with a small half joke. If you could be a Pokemon, what species or typing would you choose and why? The deep thought showed through Ollie’s furrowed brow as he thought harder on this question than he had any other. There were several that came to mind but to come down to one was more difficult. “I know I would be a ground type. I really do enjoy getting down in the dirt and working with my hands. But to come down to one I’d have to say...a Diggersby.” He nodded surly having come to the conclusion. “They enjoy their work and aren’t afraid to make a mess of themselves while having at it, having a blast the whole time. And they’re Normal too. Nothing to out there just a down to earth humble and happy Pokemon. Salt of the earth.” He beamed out another smile punctuating the statement. What do Pokemon mean to you? “To put it as simply as I can: Pokemon are life goals. They lead a life in synch with the world that has been presented to them. They change and adapt to fit their role in the world around them and keep that cycle going. It’s not about selfishness or bettering yourself to out do and put down other. It’s just about being.” He closed his eyes and took a deep breath at this thought. “The world is a better place because of Pokemon and bless them they adapt to live with us even though we can make a mess of things. But they work with us because that’s what they do. They adapt and keep on doing their part.” Anything else you'd like to tell us about before you go? “Yeah I’m real sorry about the mess I was helping this lady get her Meowth out of a tree and I slipped in some mud. I guess I should have washed off before I came up here but, you know, public speaking nerves. Is there a vacuum I could…” |
Appearance
Height 5'05" / 167cm Build Short and fit Hair Color Green (Natural) Eye Color Green | Style isn’t really something that Oliver puts thought into. The clothes he wears is mostly for comfort. Sticking with a lot of earth tones as they are his favorite colors. He keeps his long hair back in a ponytail and sports a light bit of stubble that he refuses to shave but insists on calling a beard. He is in fairly good shape spending lots of time outdoors and keeping busy around the town. His complexion is fair despite the amount of time he spends in the sun, something he equates to his mothers genes. Most of the time Oliver has a healthy caking of dirt and mud, sometimes small twigs and branches that might have caught on to him during his long hikes. Often times leaving them in his wake as he goes. Aura Ollie’s aura takes a series of rich earth tones. A deep brown dusting that seems to pool around him with swirls of green that mix into them. |
