Job: Party Problem - solo (cupcakes - average)

Lucy was enjoying her stay in Birch City - though she noticed she was getting through her savings at an alarming rate. She loved all the food, coffee shops and fashion, but unfortunately - they cost a lot. Especially for her small town budget of a fourteen years old, only away for a couple of days to pick up her starter. So while she didn't exactly plan on getting a job... how could she pass on the opportunity to make some quick buck by baking sweets for a local school that needed them? So while not a pro baker herself, she felt up to the task and decided to try her hand at it. She decided to start with cupcakes and of they go well, possibly move on to a tiered cake. First thing's first though.

"Hello, I read that you need bakers to complete some orders for tomorrow? My name is Lucy, maybe I could help?" The owner gave her a glance over and pointed with his head towards a room at the back of the bakery. There, she found a couple of other people already at task... they were all a couple of years older than her. Picking up the cupcakes recipe, she claimed her desk and started collecting all the required ingreedients: flour, eggs, unsalted butter and vanilla extract that she needed to make the dough, as well as some equipment such as a mixing bowl, hand mixer, spatula and a baking tray.

The bakery's kitchen was well organised and Lucy found all the needed equipment without problem. She was impressed by the quality of some of them, after all they were professionals. Now, back to te recipe...

Set the oven temperature at 180 degrees Celcius - check.

For the batter she will need:
- 200g of unsalted butter
- 200g of caster sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 200g of self-raising flour
- 1 tsp of vanilla extract

Soften the butter in a microwave, sieve flour and sugar to avoid lumps.

Combine all dry ingredients in a bowl and then add combined wet ingredients.

Mix everything on low speed with a hand mixer but don't overmix or the cupcakes will grow to a peak.

Got it.

But first, let's get the ingredients.

After finding everything that she needed, Lucy followed carefully the steps in the recipe to form a cupcake batter. Once smooth (but not over mixed!) she placed cupcake liners on the baking tray and started scooping it about three quarters way up. The cupcakes were going to expand in the oven and she didn't want the batter to overflow. When ready, she'd put the tray into a pre-heated oven and move on to the icing...

You follow the recipe to the letter and everything looks as it should be! Time to whip up some icing.

Once the cupcakes were safely inside the over with a timer measuring out fifteen minutes, it was time to start working on the icing. The instructions were very clear on this part as well: gather 300g of softened butter, 600g od icing sugar, vanilla extract and milk. That was going to be a lot of icing! Slowly, Lucy was getting closer to the part of the baking that she felt most insecure about - the decorating. Before she had to worry about it though, she whisked the butter until she got a smooth and soft consistency and then started adding the remaining ingredients. She then separated the icing into three different bowls and added a food colouring to each one: red, blue and yellow. And that was when the cupcakes were ready to take out from the oven! Gabbing a heat resistent glove, she opened it and took out the baking tray...

Did the cupcakes expand? Did they overflow or form peaks despite all her efforts to avoid them? Did they get burned anywhere or were they still raw inside? Lucy had some confidence in her skill to properly raise cupcakes in an over, but you never really know working with unfamiliar equipment. And this was the moment of truth!

The good news is, the cupcakes look totally edible... just, ugly. Instead of a smooth rounded top, you see some of them have lumps and bumps where the dough expanded too quickly or slowly. Hopefully you can cover it up with the icing?

Lucy looked around panicked, when she took out the tray with cupcakes and saw what they looked like. Did anyone see that? How could that happen? It must have been something with the mixing... well, it wasn't the end of the word. She still had a lot of icing and other sugar decorations to cover it up. Still, she hoped that the taste wouldn't be affected because that would be awful! Now, the hardest part of the entire process... Lucy got a piping bag with a few different icing tips and started filling one of them with the red icing twisting the bag closed at the top. This is the part where she always asked her mum's help but this time she could only count on herself. After waiting for the cupcakes to cool down completely, she concentrated on the task and slowly, started decorating them with a swirly pink icing. In places where it didn't look perfect, she placed some additional sugar decorations: flowers, images of pokemon and sprinkles. At least she managed to cover up the bumps on the cupcakes... but as for the icing itself? Well. She still had the entire batch to get better at. She took a new piping bag, this time with the blue icing and continued her work. Finally, she decorated the remaining cupcakes with the yellow icing and used up the rest of the decorations to cover up the imperfections. She was done with the cupcakes, but she really wanted to try her hand at that tiered cake too... she was hoping that her work was satisfactory and the bakery would let her do that. She was now putting the cupcakes in a box for safe transfer. In the meantime, having a minute to spare, Lucy checked on the egg in her bag and made sure it was ok.
