Sage winced as she rifled through her bag. She had blown too much of her money getting here and worse at the party. And then picking up that Tepig she had found afterwards...well it hadnt been her smartest choice. Now she had three mouths to feed, and hardly any money. She needed to get some and fast. But maybe she could use this to her advantage.
She looked over at her banjo thoughtfully. Every musician started somewhere right? Even playing on the streets? Well it would at least give her and her pokemon some practice performing, which they would need if they were ever to win a contest ribbon.
"That settles it" she said firmly to no one in particular. She shouldered her pack, her pokeballs where her pokemon were resting, and her banjo and headed out.
It took her a bit but she finally found the perfect spot, a park beside a pokemon center. After a few moments of thought, she set up near a fountaiin where there plenty of benches and trees to provide shade. "Alright, come help me out!" She tossed her pokeballs up, releasing Staccato (Kricketot) and Piper (Tepig). They stretched and bounced around in the grass as she took her banjo out of her case.
When he saw it, Staccato chirped excitedly. He may not know the move Song yet, but he could still sing along with Sage and he really liked doing so. Piper on the hand was curious, making little grunt noises as she sniffed it up and down. Sage laughed at their antics."Okay, okay! let me start and you can dance, how does that sound?"
Staccato chittered happily, but Piper looked very confused. So Sage laughed and just started to play a few chords, warming up before she got too serious, but still playing. Staccato started bouncing and humming to the music, and Piper slowly followed suit. They probably looked pretty ridiculous.
The are a couple of people moving around here and there, but they all seem to be too busy to notice you. A little kid walking with his mom turns, pulls down an eyelid, and sticks out his tongue briefly before being dragged away. His mom didn't even bother apologizing.
Her performance was.... not going well. She supposed it could be worse, but not a single person had even looked at her. Except for that annoying kid. But she refused to let him ruin her vibe. She had just stuck her tongue out right back at him, but smiling warmly. Perhaps it would help if she actually sang?
"Okay, are you guys ready to wow?" She asked her pokemon.
Staccato chirped a yes, and after a moment Piper also hesitantly grunted.
"Alright, we are gonna try coordinating some moves. Piper as part of your dance, I want you to use Tail Whip, okay?"
The Tepig again looked uncertain but nodded with a determined grunt.
"And you Staccato, I want you to use growl, okay? I know its a bit weird, but it might get people's attention."
Staccato's answer was almost a vibrating buzz, much more intense than his normal happy chirps.
"Okay let's do this!" She started playing again, this time a more intense tune. Hopefully giving them a stronger song would help the pokemon get in the groove, and her too.
Well, that earned a little more attention than last time? A man partially distracted on his phone puts a dollar down. You can’t be sure if it was from liking your music or pity for the situation, but it was something!
This was getting frustrating. She must be really out of practice from all her traveling. But she supposed some money was better than none.
She stopped playing for a bit to give her pokemon a rest as she contemplated her next move. What could she do to be better? Was her banjo not tuned right? She fiddled with the strings, plucking them and humming. They sounded just like she had been taught. Maybe she just really wasnt as good as she thought.... No, she had played too much at home to be bad. Maybe this town just had much better musicians.
She decided that the onlookers had probably just heard better music, or had more people playing around. She would have to really impress them to get somewhere.
"Okay, Staccato, come hangout with me, and chirp to the music." The little bug pokemon responded promptly, happy to take a break from the aggressive growling. "Now Piper, I want you to use Tail Whip, and then spray Ember into the sky, but away from people or trees. Let's see if that will catch people's attention."
So she started playing again, hoping she would have better luck this time.
Well at least she had a little more luck this time. Whether it was her music or little Piper giving her best with Ember, she had managed to attract a group of kids. She smiled as they seemed to enjoy the music, even doing some inconspicuous dance moves.
When she finished the song she paused to take a bow, and Staccato did as well. Piper looked over to see why the music had stopped, and saw them bowing and tried to bow too, but she bonked her nose on the pavement. She squealed in pain and surprise, and Sage scrambled over to pick her up and comfort her.
She looked up hopefully at the kids, maybe they would have some change for her? But they all looked sheepish and raised little bags of candy. Her face fell slightly, but she smiled.
"Well, thanks anyway. Im glad you enjoyed it!"
She moved back to her spot, sitting for a moment to comfort her pokemon. This was harder than she had expected, was it even worth it? Maybe not, but she had to try for a little longer. If that didnt work she would jsut go find other jobs to do for money.
With a deep breath, she stood and gathered herself again.
"Okay guys, just take a break this time, no moves, Im gonna play something a little different."
She started plucking at the banjo, a softer more sorrowful tune, and started singing about love lost, about hopes and dreams.
The sorrowful tune seems to have touched an old man who was making his morning walk through the area. He murmurs something about missing his wife and then proceeds to dump quite a bit of extra pen into your collection container before mumbling on again. Well, that was some pen but at what cost.
Sage fumbled to the end of her song, intending to give the man his money back. She had no intention of actually taking people's money in a way that was shady. But by the time she had finished he was long gone. She sank to a crouch, pulling the money from the container. Well it was something she supposed, at least she had touched someone.
It was getting later, she had time for probably about two more songs.
"Hey, y'all ready for some more music?" She asked her pokemon.
They both replied with excitement, jumping up and bouncing around her. She laughed and tried to keep the banjo away from them. "Alright, alright, let's try another song or two! Piper go ahead and use Tail whip! And Staccato just have fun!"
She started playing again, this time not concerned about making money, but giving her pokemon a chance to enjoy themselves.
There is something about this song that you're playing? That seems to attract quite a crowd to you. All of a sudden, you have about ten people standing around listening, some individuals some from groups. They seem to really dig it and are willing to pay you for the music.
Sage didnt even realize at first that her music was finally drawing a crowd. She was so into the music, swaying and moving and laughing with her pokemon as they danced. But then she realized she had gathered a crowd, and she beamed at them.
"Piper, show off your Ember!" She said in excitement, hoping it would be a little like fireworks.
The little Tepig obliged, finally in the groove and enjoying dancing to the music. She spun, and then spat embers up into the air, where they caught the sun and sparkled before they dissipated.
It was the perfect conclusion, as they subsided right as Sage finished her song, finishing with a flourish. She bowed again, and her pokemon followed suit, this time Piper bowed flawlessly.
"Thank you so much!" Sage called to her audience. "I wouldnt be able to do this without y'all!" She said, grinning. But she realized she had gotten so caught up in her performance that she had run out of time, so she waved at the onlookers and started packing up, gathering her collection box and the money she had earned.
"Alright, y'all ready to go?" She asked her pokemon, and they both nodded, looking a little sleepy. Sage herself stifled a yawn, they had been at this for a while, it was time to go rest before they continued on their journey.
