Moving deeper into the bushes is a little trouble for Marcus; holding back branches from getting caught in his clothes and also picking berries at the same time is stretching the limits of his telekinesis, and more than once he gets stuck in the face by a branch when he loses focus on it trying to pick a berry or unhook another thorn from his coat. It's quite unpleasant, but he can only imagine that it would be five times as bad if he had to do it all by hand - surely his arms would be covered in gashes from thorns by now, even with his gloves! No, this is for the best, even if *thwack* Oww. Even if that keeps happening.

As you move through the brush, you come across a startled Starley who jolts at seeing you and immediately starts pecking at you in fear. 

[Marcus Spinnaker]

Marcus flinches back, as anyone would - hands covering his face him stumbling and falling back into a bush, the whole rigmarole. The main difference between Marcus and a normal person is that having done so, he still has his telepathy free with which to try and deflect the little bird. Shocked as it is, and unsure of what force moved it, and now distances from the source of it's shock, the Starley does not stop to formulate a euphemism for it's cowardice, but rather flees immediately.

With the Starley gone, Marcus can stop to pick himself up, and take stop of the situation. His berries have been spilled, or at least, many of them have, and now he's going to have to spend another few minutes picking them up. Longer, were it not for his telekinesis, as they have been scattered amongst the roots of these trees. Still, he had been nearly done, and so he could move back out of the deeper trees, and fill up the last few bits of his box with easy pickings in the thinner trees.

You find that the low hanging berries in this more open area have been frozen solid from the touch of winter upon the area. They practically crumble under your touch.

How unfortunate. The cold has frozen these berries. Well, that is, Marcus thinks, not really his problem. He has collected all of the berries he needed to for his work, and these berries clearly aren't any good if they'll go to mush at the slightest touch. Maybe someone more skilled will come along and know what to do, or maybe the berries will rot into the soil. Either way, it is Not His Problem. He has harvested enough berries now, and will submit them to the head gardener, and then he could go get out of this damn cold and eat a hot meal. Wouldn't that be nice... So off he goes.
