Leaving the unconscious Surskit behind, Ekans resumed its perch on Ponyta, and Akane and the unlikely duo continued down the road. The landscape passed by slowly, but steadily; inlets of ocean water, waves of sand, and scraggly patches of grass and isolated trees dotted the route. Akane did not let the Shinx out of its pokeball quite yet, unsure if she wanted to deal with a newly hatched baby running about. She could barely deal with Ponyta sneaking bashful glances at her every few moments, let alone a bouncing baby electrical socket. Ekans, at least, seemed more the quite, serious sort so far. That, Akane could deal with. [break][break] Their unknown apricorn-gifter appeared at a bend in the road a few minutes after they'd abandoned their latest opponent. Like before, the shadow vanished before Akane could get close enough to make out its form. With a frown, Akane bent down and picked up yet another offering of apricorns as she reached the curve, tossing the gift into her bag before moving on. She wasn't interested in playing mystery detective; if her dark, shadowy benefactor wanted to actually say something to her, it could say it to her face. This time, Akane had barely taken another three steps before Ponyta whinnied shrilly in her ear. The pastel-maned horse stamped in alarm, and Akane tensed. The former researcher spun around, her fists coming up defensively in front of her - only to see the bushes rustle, and the sunlight gleam off of a hard reflective surface. Akane broke her fighting stance to bend down and pick up the abandoned Awakening items. She was too practical to leave them behind, but increasingly puzzled and frustrated as to who - or what - kept leaving her items. [break][break] "Okay, seriously, what the hell?" she murmured. She took a step off the path, into the grass, peering into the distance. "Whoever keeps leaving this stuff....I don't need your hand outs. Stop." She pitched her voice to carry, calling over the sound of the distant surf. With one last glare into the aether, Akane adjusted her bag and gestured for Ponyta to continue onward. She could almost see the lights of the next city in the distance, and didn't want to be caught out here on the route any longer than she needed to be. With the way things were going, she'd wake up surrounded by wild pokemon and abandoned apricorns. [break][break] [Picking up the items, continuing on]
Akane had stopped for lunch, releasing all three of her pokemon so that they could all enjoy a meal together, when she looked up to see a young girl waving at them from the distance. Fashionable and flirty-looking, the other trainer made a beeline right for Akane's makeshift camp at the edge of the road. "Heeeeeey there!" the stranger called, likely scattering all the wild pokemon within hearing distance. Akane looked away, sighing as she began clearing the bowls she'd used to feed Ekans and the others. She'd been fine with just a plain old granola bar and some water, but she wasn't so heartless that she'd make her pokemon go hungry after they'd been fighting so much, and she'd broken out the camp stove to heat up a few poffins and poke' chow. [break][break] At least they'd all finished eating before they'd been interrupted. Akane blinked as the Rising Star stopped a few feet away, her practiced eye taking in in the other's comfortable stance and open expression. "Hi there! I'm Sequoia," the interrupting trainer said, her voice bright and chipper. "Are you traveling all alone? That's pretty brave. I was just on my way to meet my friends in Birch - " Akane stood, cutting the girl off. "Did you want something?" she asked, direct as ever. Sequoia blinked, nonplussed, before smiling again. "Oh, not really! Just wanted to say hi. I haven't met many other trainers yet. What's your name?" Ekans slithered closer, staring intently at the young girl, even as Ponyta tried to hide behind Akane so that Sequoia couldn't see her. Shinx sniffed around the ground for leftover food, paying no attention to anything else. [break][break] "We won't be seeing each other again, so I don't see a point in giving you my name," Akane shrugged. Gathering the last of her cookware and packing everything up into her bag, she ignored the hurt look the other trainer was giving her. "That's...that's not nice. And you don't know that we'd never meet again! I'm taking the gym challenge too, so maybe - " Akane turned around sharply. "Look, sorry, but I'm not interested. If I defeat you in a battle, will you run off to meet your friends, and leave me alone?" That was a trainer thing, right? The last kid had been so eager to fight, maybe that was the key to getting them all to leave her alone. Akane shifted her stance, putting her weight on the balls of her feet, and jerked her head to beckon Ponyta. [break][break] For a moment, Sequoia was at a loss for words. Her eyes widened in shock, and her mouth momentarily gaped in surprise. She mastered herself in the next moment. "Fine! But don't cry when I beat you into the dust!" She reached onto her belt, pulling out a lone pokeball. "Jolteon, go teach her some manners!" A bright flash of light revealed the electric type, even as Sequoia leapt backwards to make room for the battle. Akane stepped to the side, giving Ponyta a straight avenue to the enemy. "Ponyta, tackle it." Sequoia looked scandalized. "You don't even give them names?! What kind of trainer are you? Spark, use double kick!" [break][break] Akane tilted her head, a curiously childlike gesture. Names? Truthfully, she hadn't thought of it. Ponyta responded just fine to her species name, however - she rushed forward, tackling the Jolteon into the ground. The electric type sprang up, lashing out at the equine with his back legs - once, twice. The second strike caught Ponyta right in the face - a critical hit! The psychic type staggered back, hurt, and Akane didn't hesitate to reach into her bag and pull out the potion she'd brought from the Lab. Conserving supplies was all well and good, but there was no point to it if it meant she'd end up losing a battle. She sprayed the healing item onto Ponyta, who sprang forward eagerly as the healing item took effect. "Spark, use sand attack while they're distracted," Sequoia called. The Jolteon flung sand into Ponyta's face, but the psychic type shook her head and cleared her sight once more. [break][break] "A couple more times, Ponyta. Tackle it." Akane glared at the Jolteon, who leaped into a quick attack; the two pokemon connected at the same moment, but Ponyta's larger bulk knocked the eeveelution to the side. One more tackle and it was ko'ed. Ponyta pranced happily back towards Akane, leaving Sequoia to return Jolteon to its pokeball. The other trainer wiped frustrated tears from her eyes, glaring at Akane. "You didn't have to be so mean!" she cried, before turning away and running back the way she'd come. Akane sighed, a long-suffering sound. "Am I mean?" she asked her pokemon curiously. Ekans responded by licking Akane's outstretched hand, while Ponyta rested her muzzle momentarily on Akane's head. Shinx looked up at Akane adoringly, trotting over to sit on her feet. "Shiiii," the newborn offered. Akane blinked, then shouldered her bag, intending to keep on going. "I'll take that as a maybe," she said. [break][break] [Defeating Rising Star Sequoia - 1 potion used]

Akane made her way quickly down the path, all three of her pokemon returned to their pokeballs for the time being. They'd be in the city soon, and walking around with her entire pokemon team in tow was bound to attract some notice. She was still mulling over the idea of pokemon names. Of course, she didn't get too far before her mysterious shadow stranger was back; the shrouded blur vanished from the side of the road into a nearby copse of trees, but not before Akane caught a flash of yellow. [break][break] With a sigh, Akane bent down to pick up an abandoned Nest Ball nestled in a hollow off the path - and looked up just in time to come nose to nose with a Pikachu. "Pika piiii!" the electric type offered cheerily. Akane just barely managed to contain her shock enough not to punt the pokemon square in the face; instead, she straightened, maybe a little too quickly, glaring down at the yellow rodent. [break][break] "Uhm. Hi?" Akane offered. The Pikachu smiled wide. "Pikachu!" Akane's eyes narrowed. "What are you doing? Are you the one who's been leaving items everywhere?" The Pikachu's ears twitched - just before a voice called out from the trees. "Char! Charmander!" Akane blinked as a Charmander - its flame small and tepid, its bright orange coloration marred by long white scars - led a one-eyed Eevee out from cover. The pair joined the Pikachu, who bounded over to meet them, looking back at Akane. [break][break] "You guys look like you took a beating. Where's your trainer?" Akane looked around, like the other person would magically materialize from the surroundings. It was pretty clear that these weren't just wild pokemon, but they were all in pretty rough shape - except the Pikachu. The electric mouse bounded over, tapping Akane's leg before reaching out to offer Akane another Nest Ball. She frowned, crossing her arms. Her eyes narrowed. "Were you guys...trying to help me, or trying to bribe me?" she asked. The Pikachu tilted its head inquisitively. "Piii? the electric type asked. [break][break] "Okay, fine. Then what do you want?" Akane returned. The Charmander stepped up, gesturing at Akane's waist emphatically. Akane blinked, glancing down. "My pokeballs?" A pause. "You...want a battle? The Charmander shook its head, while the Pikachu exed its arms in denial. Akane sighed, putting her hand on her hip. "Okay, you're gonna kind of have to spell it out here. I don't speak pokemon." The Pikachu looked bashful - and then, with a small zap of electricity, sent a spark flying towards an empty pokeball on Akane's belt. Akane frowned. "Wait. You...want me to catch you? Is that what all the items and the apricorns and stuff was for? Were you trying to butter me up?" All three of the pokemon nodded at her, their faces grim. [break][break] "This is the weirdest fucking journey ever," she grumbled. She cast a critical eye on the pokemons' poor health. Her voice rose, and she removed three minimized pokeballs from her belt. "Fine. But you realize that if you already belong to someone, this isn't going to work." The pokemon glanced at each other - but all three of them nodded once more. With a grim look, Akane tossed the pokeballs gently into the air. The Eevee, Charmander, and Pikachu disappeared in a flash of white light - and to Akane's surprise, they stayed there. They didn't belong to another trainer, then? She frowned thoughtfully at the three pokeballs, tilting her head in confusion. What had happened that they had decided to stalk her of all people? Akane covered her nose as she continued down the trail. A foul stench inundated the air - something like sulfur and old trash. Akane saw the source of it almost immediately. Though she was only another minute or so from the town - she could see it just over the next ridge - a Stunky had waddled out onto the road. It didn't seem to be paying her much mind, and though she was compelled to fight in the interests of training, she was worried about getting those three pokemon to the Pokemon Center as soon as possible. She carefully skirted the Stunky, jogging all the rest of the way to the town. [break][break] [Skip, Closing Thread]
