The steel avian shot through the sky soaring high above the hills. Below it seemed almost all of the route stretched out before them. It was a rare sunny day for this winter season and warm enough a bit of the snow covering the waves of grass below them had begun to melt. Elizabeth was attired in gear appropriate for flying on the skarmory and riding behind her as usual was Raya, though the steel jackal had little worry of being damaged by her fell steel type.
Racing under their shadow below Ares was providing transport for Sini while Loki was appearing and disappearing at random intervals, never too far from either the ranger or the canine however. Sadly Tansy wasn't quite up to speed for these two and was spending the trip in her pokeball for now. Liz intended this trip to be short and swift so the venusaur wouldn't have to spend long inside the ball. At times the pair sometimes wished she were still the small bulbasaur Liz had first met who could easily be carried on the back of the skarmory.
Still Liz would do her best to be quick or at least to stop and let the venusaur out to breather if they had to stop. The ranger's only goal for the moment was reaching Pine Town, another town to visit and explore and check that everything was in order. Whatever happened along the way well happened. They weren't looking for trouble or anything specific but the ranger knew better than to believe it would be a completely uneventful trip.

The skarmory shot across the sky like a bullet. His flight didn't include any fancy loops or dips, simply a straight shot toward their goal. Chisulo wasn't one to go to excess, keeping things to the point and efficient. One might not think it the most entertaining of flight but Chisulo was certainly the right bird for getting one to their destination in a timely fashion.
"I'm afraid it's snowing again Liz." The lucario commented with a firm hand on the ranger's waist. Raya flicked an ear and watched a few fresh flurries begin to fall once more from the sky. She glanced downward at the fiery canine below chasing the steel avian's shadow. On his back the blue gardevoir seemed quite bored already and absently plucked a dusk ball from the side of the road via her telekinetic abilities.
"Is it much farther Liz? The snow's so dreary." The psychic fairy stated a little dejectedly. Ares barked and shook his head as he bounded forward nearly unseating Sini.
"What?! But the snow is so white and fluffy! And it sizzles with every step!" The canine argued happily licking at snowflakes as he raced along.
"The only problem with the snow is the vision hazard." Chisulo added matter-of-factly as he gave another powerful pump of his wings. Loki suddenly appeared in front of him though the skarmory didn't stop and flew right through the ghost. "Blasted specter." The bird scoffed as the mismagius cackled gleefully.
"Ah but mistress likes snow doesn't she?" The ghost stated with a malicious look then vanished and reappeared above the skarmory, lucario and ranger then dumped a load of snow on the trio.
"Really Loki?" Liz sighed and rolled her eyes at the ghost then gave the skarmory a pat. "You better watch it or you'll get to spend the rest of the trip in your ball."
Loki scowled then blew a raspberry at the ranger before vanishing again. Raya sighed and gave Liz a sideways glance. "I still don't know why you allow him or Shyam loose like that. You're too soft on them." The lucario chided with a shake of her head.
"I am inclined to agree with the jackal, captain." The steel avian added as he dropped a little lower due to a shift in the wind. The ranger sighed.
"Perhaps but it's part of who they are, I can't exactly punish them for that. After six years Loki's not going to change and Shyam's not likely to either. And you don't need to call me captain anymore Chis." She informed them looking on ahead. "He's already bored, just needs something to do. Sini's bored too, though I know she's more composed than Loki about it."
"You'll always be a captain to me ma'am. And, with all due respect ma'am, you really could give them a little firmer training, I don't recall the specter being quite so uppity when you were with the military." Chisulo responded glancing over his shoulder at the girl on his back. Liz raised a brow at him and glanced at Raya who shrugged, but maybe they were right, perhaps she was going soft.

The wind had picked up and the snow had increased some so Chisulo had to drop down low enough to nearly skim the ground. He flew alongside Ares for a bit waiting for it to clear up and he could regain elevation. Of course they weren't the only ones on the route today. The pair had to suddenly diverge to avoid a scrafty that appeared out of the snow. Ares put on the breaks and the canine skidded to a halt before bowling over a quite a large figure a few feet behind the scrafty. Chisulo had shot passed and the trio circled back to check and be certain the arcanine hadn't run the hiker over.
"Oh hey! Sorry about that. You guys okay?" The girl inquired as she slipped off the skarmory's back. Raya followed suit and the bird stood back behind her, wings tucked against his sides. The scrafty shuffled back and began fussing at Ares who eyed the lizard. Sini stifled a giggle and glanced at Liz and the others.
"Guess you really pissed him off Ares." The gardevoir smirked at the fiery canine who growled down at the scrafty. Liz gave the arcanine a scolding look but the hiker just laughed.
"Might as well let them work it out in a battle eh?" He suggested with a guffaw and a grin. The ranger looked between the canine and the lizard and shrugged.
"Sure, can't hurt any." She agreed and gestured to Sini who hopped off the fiery canine with a sigh.
"You know I wouldn't have minded a battle..." The psychic stated a little sulkily. The ranger chuckled.
"You'll get your chance soon enough, promise. This time, well, Scrafty wants to fight Ares not you." She responded giving the gardevoir a wink. Raya and Chisulo moved along beside the ranger who took up position opposite the hiker.
"Ready big fella?" Liz looked to the arcanine who lowered his head and growled. He was more than ready. "Alright... now Play Rough, Ares."
"You go Scrafty, use Low Kick!" The scrafty rushed forward towards the fluffy fire type and brought his leg up low. He slammed it into Ares's side throwing the canine off his feet for a moment. However, Ares latched onto the lizard's leg and began slinging him around like a ragdoll then beat him repeatedly on the ground. Liz winced a little watching the rough play on the arcanine's part.
Ares let go and stepped back panting a little. He favored his left foreleg a little tender from the low kick. Scrafty lay in a heap but gingerly got back up though looked pretty rough. It seemed the lizard was going to manage to tough it out though another hit would easily take him down.
"Whoo whee, that's some rough fighting. Come on back now Scrafty, let Mawile handle this." The hiker called quickly returning the fighting lizard. Soon a mawile had replaced the dark fighter and was eyeing Ares with suspicion. Ares balked just a little under the steel fairy's gaze.
The ranger pursed her lips but nodded to Ares. "Alright then, Flamethrower." The girl instructed unsure why the hiker had changed pokemon with one that was still weak to the arcanine's innate typing.
"Mawile use Sucker Punch!" The hiker called quickly. The mawile moved fast and smacked Ares soundly surprising him. The arcanine whimpered but growled and released a powerful burst of flames. Mawile however was unable to withstand the attack and collapsed on the ground.
"Hmph, well good job Mawile." The hiker stated as he recalled the fallen fairy. Ares was looking rather worn now, the arcanine having taken two attacks and his own confidence slightly shaken.
"Ah Intimidate, the hiker was trying to weaken Ares's attack." Liz chewed her lip but gave Ares a nod. "Hang in there boy, you can do it."
The ranger pulled an oran berry from her bag and rolled it toward the fiery canine. Ares happily lipped it up then turned back to the battle. The hiker didn't look happy about that as he released the scrafty once more.
"Watch out now, use Protect." Seemed now that he knew about the fairy type attack, the hiker was intending to try and drag things out and hope for an opening. Liz smirked a little.
"Go on and use Agility." The ranger told the arcanine letting the protect prove unnecessary as the arcanine sped up. Ares huffed and stared the scrafty down. The hiker pursed his lips.
"Hang in there now and Low Kick once more." He ordered. Ares however was already moving and once again roughly grabbed hold of the lizard between his jaws. Again the canine roughly battered the scrafty around until he was unconscious. Happily he dropped the fighting lizard at the hiker's feet panting and looking quite pleased with himself.
The hiker sighed a little dejectedly and recalled the fallen scrafty. "Well now that's one tough arcanine you've got there." Liz blushed and bowed her head.
"Well your Scrafty and Mawile got their licks in, I know Ares'll be feeling that for awhile." She assured him with a grin. The canine let his tongue loll but he was looking pretty tired. The girl chuckled and patted the canine's head.
"Well you take care now miss and good travels to you." The hiker bid her farewell as Liz waved then shivered rubbing her arms.
"Well, going to be okay to keep running Ares?" The girl inquired of the fiery canine.
"Oh yes! Running makes everything better!" Ares gave a loud bark of excitement then moved closed to the girl. The temperatures had dropped and evening was fast approaching. The girl grinned and patted the canine.
"Good 'cause I think I'll ride with Ares for awhile since it's gotten pretty cold now." The ranger added giving Chisulo a smile. The steel avian dipped his head as Raya smirked a little before mounting up with the skarmory once more. The chill in the air didn't bother the steel types a bit, but Liz didn't have their natural protection from the cold.
"Oh alright. Now we'll ride together." Sini piped with a smile as she climbed back on the fiery canine. Liz chuckled and nodded as she settled in on Ares's back.
"Yea, we can keep each other warm." She suggested with a chuckle. Of course being on Ares's back was plenty warm for both psychic and ranger. The girl directed the arcanine forward and they raced off once more.

The day was waning fast however the group had been traveling for the better part of the day now and hadn't eaten since leaving birch. Though Elizabeth wanted to get to Pine Town before nightfall, as they seemed to be at the halfway point of the route, now would be a good time to take a breather. The ranger leaned forward on the arcanine and gestured to an odd looking stone formation.
"What do you guys think? That look like a decent spot for a break?"
She inquired of the group glancing over her shoulder to Sini then peering up at Chisulo, Raya and presumably Loki. Ares slowed his pace and bobbed his head happy.
"Oh yes! Food, food, food! I'm starving!"
The fiery canine's tongue lolled as he turned toward the stone structure. Sini stretched and nodded in agreement as well.
"Yea I could do with a bite to eat too."
Chisulo dropped from overhead reaching the stone formation before the others, prepared to perch atop whatever the formation was however he stopped in mid air looking confused.
"Say captain, I'm not certain this is just some natural forming stone feature..."
Raya leaned forward and peered over the skarmory's shoulder frowning a little as she studied the stone creature.
"Um, yea that's definitely not a stone formation. It's alive, whatever it is and giving off a pretty strong aura."
The jackal glanced down at Liz who'd caught up to the two steel types. Chisulo settled on the ground and Raya dropped from the steel avian's back onto the slushy snow. The snow had stopped awhile ago and Liz was already feeling quite warm from riding with the arcanine. Though now all eyes were on whatever this stone beast before them was.
"Er hello there?"
The ranger greeted softly her best guess that this was an unfamiliar kind of pokemon. She checked with her pokedex and sure enough it registered as a stonjourner. The stone pokemon turned slowly, until she'd come full about and they could see a face within the mid-stone section.
Her team all looked on in some surprise. Pokemon were fairly surprising overall but this was perhaps a little more unusual than what they normally came across. The stonejourner backed off a step and lowered her gaze appearing rather anxious about their presence. Liz gave her a soft smile and held up both hands to show she meant no harm.
However just as she was hoping to get acquainted with the stonejourner a kangaskhan staggered over. The normal type seemed to have come from no where and appeared to be unwell. The male was unsteady on his feet and swaying back and forth seeming unconcerned with the trainer and her team. Liz frowned then raised both brows as she continued to watch the normal type.
"Is he... is he drunk?"
The ranger inquired of her team noting the oddly familiar movements in the large kangaroo. Raya cracked a grin and nodded slowly, as did Chisulo. Suddenly Loki appeared directly in front of the hammered kangaskhan and cackled as he blew a raspberry in the male's face. The kangaskhan grinned stupidly at the ghost and attempted to grab hold of the mismagius.
"Ah, ah, ah no touchy!"
The ghost cackled as he darted away from the kangaskhan. The kangaskhan seemed to enjoy this game of chase for the moment however the stonejourner looked uncomfortable by the sudden presence of so many beings. The kangaskhan soon began to grow annoyed by the ghost and lunged at him more forcefully.
"Get him! Get him! Bite the ghost!"
Ares yipped excitedly as he watched this bizarre, one-sided game of tag. Raya face palmed and Chisulo rolled his eyes. Sini however crossed her arms and pouted.
"I thought we were supposed to be having supper?"
She sighed a tad over dramatically, hangry never looked good on the gardevoir. Liz gave Sini an apologetic smile and shrugged. Perhaps this game had gone on long enough.
"Alright Lok, leave the poor kangaskhan alone."
The ranger instructed with a warning tone to her mental voice. Loki huffed and made a face at the young woman, pausing just long enough for the kangaskhan to manage grabbing hold of him. However the normal type simply passed through the ethereal being which caught the male by surprise and sent him tumbling face down into the earth.
"Oo that looked painful."
The lucario commented with a wince. Liz bit her lip looking concerned for the kangaskhan who apparently had managed to knock himself out. She slipped over to his unconscious form and shook her head.
"Hey Sini? Could you use Heal Pulse on him? I'm not sure what effect it might have but it should at least help him feel a little better when he wakes up."
Sini frowned a little then sighed and nodded. She hadn't wanted to see the kangaskhan hurt just to stop being a distraction. The gardevoir drifted over and closed her eyes as she held her hands over the snoozing normal type. A soft, pink energy poured out from her and drifted gently down around the kangaskhan wrapping around him like a comforting blanket. Sini gave a soft smile then shot Loki an annoyed glance.
"You should be more careful! Now, can we eat?"
She quickly shifted her focus back to her stomach and Liz gave a small chuckle as she nodded.
"Alright, alright. Oh I almost forgot about Tansy."
The ranger quickly released the venusaur who immediately stretched out her limbs as well as her vines. She shook out her flower and looked to Liz in appreciation.
"Hey girl, that feel better?"
Tansy bobbed her head then looked at the others pausing to glance curiously at the stonejourner who was still watching them from her spot on the incline. Tansy smiled and waved a vine at the rock pokemon.
"Oh hello! Is this a new friend Liz?"
She inquired looking back to the ranger. Liz turned toward the stonejourner uncertainly.
"Well I'm not sure, we haven't really gotten a chance to get to know each other, but I was hoping she might be hungry."
Tansy grinned at her trainer knowing what the girl was thinking. Food often had a way of bring people and pokemon together. Liz turned and began pulling out a few things of pokemon food plus some berries and other rations that she passed around to the others. Sini happily dug into hers as did the others. Liz however carefully approached the stonejourner.
"Sorry about all the craziness. I hope we didn't startle you too much."
The ranger gave the stone pokemon a soft smile and offered her some pokemon food, along with a bluk berry. The stonejourner seemed hesitant. Liz was guessing she was a bit shy, for a big rock. The young woman simply smiled and sat down on the incline her back to the stonejourner letting her decide if she felt comfortable eating or not.
Everybody else was quite satisfied with their simple meals. Loki of course was busy chucking piece of pokemon food at Chisulo, Ares's face was buried in his foot and most of it was being flung around onto the melting snow. Sini was rapidly yet daintily nibbling away at each piece. Tansy munched slowly and happily watching the others with a grin. Raya moved to join Liz taking a casual bite of a berry and glancing sideways at the stonejourner.
"Think she'll come along? Seems a bit timid, might not take to our group very well."
The lucario stated as she sat cross legged beside her trainer. Liz shrugged looking back to notice the stonejourner was indeed trying some of the offered food, including the bluk berry. She looked back to Raya and shrugged.
"Well never hurts to ask."
The ranger responded as she finished her food then got back up and approached the stonejourner with an offered Great Ball.

Happily the stonejourner agreed and into the ball she went. Liz looked a tad surprised but grinned to herself as she tucked the ball away. Well that was one more for the team. Her focus turned back to the others who were now finishing up their meals. Evening was beginning to fall so it looked like the rest of their trip could be a bit dark. The ranger pursed her lips then glanced at Tansy with a grin.
"Say Tans, think you could give us a bit more light?"
She suggested as the venusaur raised a brow at her trainer. She bobbed her head then closed her eyes and leaned forward her bloom pointed toward the setting sun. Gradually the sunlight increased and got much brighter than any normal sunset. The venusaur smirked looking pleased with herself, her bloom now soaking up the enhanced sunlight's rays.
"Like that?"
Tansy asked with a wink. Sunny Day sure could come in handy sometimes. The ranger chuckled and nodded, now perhaps they'd have enough light to make Pine Town before nightfall. Sini smiled serenely to herself and twirled in a circle. The soft warmth from the sun had begun to melt most of the remaining snow and the gardevoir too appreciated the warm glow.
"That'll certainly assist with visibility. However I doubt it'll last long, we should move quickly."
The skarmory commented twitching his head toward Liz. With the sudden boost from the sunlight Tansy's chlorophyll kicked in and the veunsaur ought to be able to keep up with the others the rest of the way. She could certainly move her bulk when the need arose, even if she wasn't the most graceful.
"Right, well let's get to it."
The ranger slipped back astride Chisulo while Sini settled in on Tansy's head and Raya now rode Ares. Hopefully this last leg of the trip would be fairly uneventful. Chisulo took to the skies and the others jogged along the road after the avian with Loki drifting along somewhere in the shadows.

Raya noted something glinting on the ground and reached down to scoop it up as Ares passed by. She gave a sharp whistle then held it up and waved to Liz.
"Hey found you a z-crystal down here."
Liz leaned over Chisulo's side and grinned.
"Wow nice catch. Wonder if it's from the mines here or someone dropped it."
The ranger mused as Chisulo dipped down a bit so she could get a better look. Ares wuffed and let his tongue lolly as he loped along.
"Ooh Z-Crystal? What's that do? Can I use it?!"
He inquired excitedly. Liz chuckled as Raya and Chisulo sighed at the arcanine's ignorance.
"Well I've never used one before, but I know they tap into a unique power that allows pokemon to use extremely powerful moves in battle. That one looks yellow some I'm guessing it's Electrium-Z which you'd only be able to use if you knew an electric type move."
The young woman explained as Chisulo drifted back and forth over the arcanine's head. Ares whined a little as he didn't know any electric type moves.
"Aww, but I want to use special moves!"
Liz chuckled as did Tansy, the venusaur having always found the arcanine quite endearing.
"Don't worry, I might teach you an electric move sometime, or we could find a Firium-Z, which you can use when you know fire type moves."
Ares grinned happily satisfied with this promise. Pine Town was beginning to loom ahead in the growing dark, seemed they'd be there sooner rather than later.
