His freshly purchased Explorer Kit in hand, Kaisei headed up into the mountains toward the mining town of Pine. Accompany him in front was Haru, the steadfast Charmander showing no signs of complaint despite the frigid weather and the icy ground. He was less certain about the other one, a Swirlix that he had luckily(?) won in a lottery game back at Birch. The Pokemon had initially pleaded to be carried in his arms, a request he had emphatically refused ("You've got feet, you can use them like the rest of us"), and since then she had toddled close to his own footprints the whole way, occasionally using her tail to bounce over a heavy drift of snow. Also tucked away warmly (warmer than he himself was, he hoped) in his backpack was the egg he had won from the same gambling enterprise. Kaisei might have cared about Saber's choice words regarding the value of gambling, or lack thereof, if he were the type to worry about money, but as it stood he couldn't care less. [break][break] The path ahead was uneven, with knee-high grasslands giving way to rocky slopes and then back again. Kaisei motioned for Haru to slow their pace. Last thing he wanted was to stumble over some unseen Diglett hole or Buneary burrow at the very beginning of his journey. As they walked, he noticed that a peculiar scent had drifted into the air. It was like the ladies' perfume you saw in ads that promised to attract hordes of men, and to Kaisei's horror, it might have been working. Sakura looked up at him and smiled with that droopy tongue of hers, an expression Kaisei could only match with a grimace. It was approximately this moment that Kaisei regretted not training up Haru more so that the little fire lizard had an actual Fire-type move. Still, he couldn't be seen to be weak now, not in the face of this... overgrown cherry bud. At a simple hand signal from his trainer, the Charmander rushed into the fray, growling at the Cherubi as it merely absorbed some sunlight into itself with a Growth. Haru laid in with a flurry of Scratches, the lizard's greater mobility allowing him to dodge away from the Cherubi's own clumsy Tackles with ease. [break][break] He couldn't thwart its Leech Seed, however, and there was only so hard the Charmander could Scratch before it became clear to Kaisei that this was a losing battle. What sealed the deal was when the Cherubi stopped attacking, using the light of the Morning Sun to restore its vitality. [break][break] "Switch!" Kaisei called, returning Haru to his Pokeball, and gesturing to Sakura to join the fray. She bounced forward but looked back at him, hesitant. [break][break] "Blast it with Dazzling Gleam," Kaisei said, and the Swirlix's entire body glowed with a white light before rainbow colored rays knocked the Cherubi back. Before it could recover again, Kaisei threw a Pokeball at it. [break][break] Notes: 208 WC[break] Hover the Pokemon for level and energy info![break] Using 1 Pokeball to catch Cherubi. If battle ends, level to Haru.
Kaisei and the Swirlix crowded around the wiggling Pokeball, until it eventually slowed to a stop. We did it! He bent down to pick up the Pokeball, shrunk it, and clipped it onto his belt. "Good work, Sakura. I never doubted you could do it." Then, because he suspected she might appreciate it based on her previous behavior, he reached out with two fingers and lightly patted the top of her head. The cotton ball Pokemon immediately let out a gasp and hopped a few steps backward, flushing a deep shade of red. Okay, maybe that was too forward. He'd need a light touch with this one. "Let's continue on," he said, leading the way and letting Haru rest in his Pokeball this time. These were tough opponents, and it seemed the Charmander wasn't quite ready yet. [break][break] They hadn't gotten too far when he felt a jostling at his back. "Sakura, what did I--" but no, she was still a fair distance away, not even nudging at his ankles like she was previously. So what could have been...? Oh, right, the egg. He unslung the pack and carefully lifted out the Zangoose egg, which twitched again as he set it on the ground. "Any day now..." Kaisei breathed a sigh of relief that he had removed the egg from his backpack as it glowed, grew, changed shape, grew again, oh no not this again as it finally dimmed, revealing the shape of an eight-foot-tall snarling beast Pokemon. He stared it down. "Yes, I am your trainer." The Zangoose regarded him with an unperturbed expression until they both heard a loud yell from something accelerating down the hill. Immediately the Zangoose spread its arms and positioned itself defensively between the unknown intruder... [break][break] ...and Sakura. Of course. [break][break] Kaisei could see that the Tyrogue was raring for a fight, as he so often had been when he was a hot-blooded teenager. "I'll take you on. Hinata, your time to shine!" The Cherubi was slightly disoriented upon emerging from his Pokeball, which was just the opening Tyrogue needed to stun him with a Fake Out. Hinata spun around in a circle, a little dizzy but without any serious damage. The Tyrogue hopped from one foot to the other, an orange glow in the shape of a flame building up around its body as it Focused Energy, something Kaisei could see even without the use of his Aura Sight. [break][break] "Let it close in, then use Leech Seed," the trainer commanded. When the Tyrogue attempted a Tackle, the Cherubi wobbled backward a bit before both mouths extruded a seed, and spat it. At such close range, it wasn't hard to land a direct hit. The seeds glowed red as they sprouted vines around each of the fighting baby's fists, sapping away its energy. Kaisei had Hinata follow up with a Tackle of his own, bashing the Tyrogue in the head with the Cherubi's own vestigial one, before he threw another Pokeball at it. The sun was beginning to set after Kaisei wrapped up his battle with the Tyrogue, a new capture clipped snugly onto his belt. In freezing temperatures such as these, it wouldn't do to be caught out in the open. Kaisei stiffened his shoulders and trudged onward, onward, until at last he located a suitable resting place: one of the few scattered trees in the area, nestled by the bank of a river. [break][break] There was plenty of dry grass and twigs lying around for a suitable fire, and after Haru ignited it, Kaisei spent some time on his P*DA checking his texts and sending a few of his own, including a picture of Haru to his friend Eri. He slipped off his pack and rummaged around in it before pulling out a plastic bowl containing hard noodles, soon immersed in the river water, and a small packet of pre-mixed curry. Hardly a breakfast of champions (or lunch, or dinner), but such was one of the hazards of traveling, and Kaisei was well used to it by now. [break][break] After heating it over the fire, he ate the curry noodles in silence, reminding himself to buy proper Pokemon food for the team as soon as he made it to Pine Town. There were a lot of them by now. Sakura and Haru crowded around the fire, while Kaisei and Daigo remained by the tree, keeping eyes, ears, and other senses alert to anything that might be approaching their small camp. Their night watch would not go undisturbed, as a small cat Pokemon scampered out of the grass, sniffing the air intently, and wandered over to their fire. No doubt it was hungry. Kaisei shook his head. "There's nothing here for you. Scram!" The Meowth responded with a yowl, waking up Haru from his place by the fire, who walked over to confront the Meowth with arms crossed over his chest. [break][break] The Meowth lashed out with a Fake Out, but after seeing the Charmander stand his ground, all the fight seemed to go out of it. The two Pokemon sized each other up, volleying Growls back and forth, until the Charmander strode over and decked the Meowth across the face with a Scratch. Having decided it was beaten, the Meowth retreated back into the grass and was soon out of sight. [break][break] No further Pokemon disturbed them until Kaisei woke the next morning, and after packing up his few things, he set off again with his Pokemon in tow, Sakura's sweet smell wafting through the air. The path through the hills narrowed, and Kaisei and Sakura slowed to a snail's pace. Around a bend the trainer noticed something large and brown lying in the road. The creature turned its head, making a *hee-haw* noise, and using his Pokedex, Kaisei could determine it was a mud-covered Mudbray, one that appeared content to block their path and nothing else. Not exactly a Pokemon he expected he'd have a good time training. He carefully approached, watching the wild Pokemon's movements. The Mudbray rolled around in the dirt and splashed some mud on itself, seemingly without a care in the world. [break][break] Kaisei's nose twitched, and he made sure to give the Mudbray as wide a berth as possible, though the narrow path made it difficult. He was just past and about to turn back and continue on his way when the Mudbray suddenly stood up, excitedly, and shook its head about, sending mud flying through the air. Kaisei startled and attempted to jump back, he did not want any of his clothes to get damaged, the damn things were expensive and he had few enough as it was... Luckily, despite that the Mudbray was making quite the splash with the mud, you jump out of the way just in time to avoid a few new brown spots to your nice clothing. Wow, how agile!
Well, that was altogether too close for comfort. Kaisei breathed a sigh of relief and shook out his legs. He already felt a little bit more nimble. [break][break] After a brief check to see if Sakura was also okay, he turned and stared down the Mudbray. The donkey Pokemon seemed to pay no attention to the trainer at all, after registering that he wasn't in any mood to play. It turned its head again and trotted off down the trail in the opposite direction, chasing down what appeared to be a passing insect of some sort. Sakura waved her tail good-bye as the Mudbray left. Then she and Kaisei resumed traveling onward, through the freezing cold weather, the man hoping he wouldn't run into too many more surprises. The next Pokemon to cross Kaisei's path was a little Pancham - certainly not as impressive as some of his previous catches. "Come on out, Hinata," he said, releasing the Cherubi once again. "Like we practiced. Leech Seed and Morning Sun to heal!" [break][break] He did not expect the foe to simply sidestep the first Leech Seed attack, stomping it into the dirt as the clouds overhead gathered, rain starting to pour. The Pancham let out a bark, then struck a martial arts pose, extending one arm toward Hinata and... making a rude gesture with its finger? Somehow, that was enough to get the veins popping on Hinata's forehead. Before Kaisei could puzzle out the logic of Cherubi having veins to pop, his Pokemon was already rushing headlong toward the Pancham. [break][break] Well, shit, Kaisei thought as the Taunted Pokemon was too caught up in his desire to brawl to do anything else. Each Tackle was met with an Arm Thrust, the accumulation of damage slowly pushing the Cherubi back. Finally, the Pancham wrapped both arms around Hinata and Tackled him into the dirt. Kaisei sighed and recalled his fallen Pokemon. That did not go as planned. [break][break] Still wanting more, the Pancham then turned its attention to Sakura, who squeaked with confusion as she realized she was being targeted. This time the Pancham made a bleating noise like a goat, then leaned forward to pull down her bottom eyelid and stick out her tongue. Sakura responded with a shrill cry that caused both trainer and opponent to be taken aback, before unleashing a Dazzling Gleam. The bright pink burst of light knocked the Pancham flat on her back. Figuring this was as good a time as any, Kaisei threw a Pokeball at it. Another fight, and another successful capture. Kaisei smiled down in the Pokeball in his hand for a few moments, before it was spirited away to the PC by some means that he was sure he would need a PhD in Eggheadery to even begin to be able to figure out. "Nice one, Sakura. Shall we go?" The Swirlix seemed less than enthused for some reason that he couldn't quite put his finger on. Had that Taunt move really gotten that much under her skin? ...Shit, was he messing up metaphors again? These things were tricky when it came to Pokemon. [break][break] Sakura fluffed up her body, releasing a fresh batch of sweet-smelling perfume as they continued on down the road. Kaisei was starting to wonder when he'd ever see grass again. Surely they were getting close to Pine Town? He took a brief moment to pull out his phone and check the GPS map app, which placed them... no, only about halfway along the way. Damn. He supposed he could take a rest, but that would just make it take even longer to get there. At least he had nice expensive walking shoes to keep going, so onward they went.
