Well, if one wanted to start out cooking, one should at least start out serving. Well, that was what the man told him when giving him the job at this place. It was a small cafe in Birch, but it seemed to have plenty of business, which was why Isaac had been brought on part time to help with serving the food. And so, here Isaac was, waiting as the first few customers came in. He took a deep breath as he prepared the notepad he had been given. At least when you're cooking, you didn't need to talk to people. You just needed to make the food. Here, he had to speak to them and get their orders.
As they were shown their seats, Isaac approached them, trying to keep himself calm. "G-Good afternoon," he said in a polite manner, "My name's Isaac and I'll be taking care of you today. Would you like to start off with any drinks or appetizers?"
As you approach the table you see it's a small family of four. A middle-aged blonde woman with a short haircut who you could only assume is the mother immediately starts complaining about how long it took you to come over and that you should have basically been waiting for them when they arrived, etc.,etc. Her rant goes on for a full five minutes before she looks at you critically and asks you what the specials are. The way she's tapping her nails on the table implies she wants it yesterday.
Well, of course Isaac would get the table containing the critical, complaining mother. Isaac had to steel himself to prevent himself from getting flustered. He had been doing what the other waiters were doing, so he knew he wasn't doing anything wrong. But if this woman was going to be difficult, well, Isaac would just deal with it. She can be content in being unhappy.
"Well, our specials today are fillet mignon with a creamy mushroom sauce, shrimp alfredo, and a honey roasted chicken with rosemary." Isaac replied, trying to keep his tone level and polite, instead of giving her a flat tone like he wanted to. "In terms of drinks, we currently have a special of 15% off all cocktails." Granted, it was a bit early for anyone to be drinking, but he got the impression this was a woman who wouldn't turn down something hard. Hopefully the rest of her family would be a lot more amiable.

For some reason the mother's expression twists into a look like she's smelled something nasty, and she states that she doesn't like your tone and would like to speak to a manager. Uh oh.
Yep, she was one of those sorts of people. Barely gave him a chance, and already she's calling for the manager. Just, freaking, great. Well, arguing with her was just going to cause more trouble. He may as well, do the right thing and let the manager handle it. Hopefully he'll realize just how unreasonable she was being and take his side in the matter. Though he couldn't help but feel like that wouldn't be the case. "Of course," he said, before turning to head for the manager's office at the back of the restaurant. At least this job was only a temporary job, and wasn't going to be a full time thing. Otherwise he'd be worried about being fired.
He approached the door to the office and gave it a small knock. As the voice on the other end told him to enter, Isaac stuck your head in. "There's a customer that wants to speak to you." Isaac spoke in a flat tone, showing how annoyed at the situation he was.
Frowning, the manager gets up and goes to talk to the woman. There's a fair bit of yelling, but rather than come back and yell at you the manager instead tells you to just work on bussing and clearing tables for a bit. It's not a bad punishment, but it'll be a little hard to get in some serving experience while you're cleaning. At least you don't have to deal with the mom anymore!
Isaac flinched at the sound of the shouting. Yeah, he expected something like this. That woman just seemed determined to be miserable, and to cause problems for everyone there. When the manager came back to him, a part of Isaac was worried he was going to blame him for this. And, well, you sort of could say he did. He simply told Isaac to focus on clearing and bussing tables for a while. Not exactly the experience Isaac was hoping for, but hey, it was better than being thrown out.
And so, he went around, making sure everything was in order. He made sure the tables were all prepared and ready for customers, and when customers left, he was the first to reach the table and clear the plates, clean off any messes and the like. At least he wasn't having to work with that woman anymore, but he hoped he could get back to serving soon.
The manager notices your hard work and comes over to tell you that it's all right to start serving again. He points to your next table, an elderly couple who smile endearingly at you as you approach. It looks like they've already taken a liking to you!
Isaac blinked and then gave the manager a warm smile. Well, that certainly worked out. He knew he'd be brought back to serving eventually. He had just ended up being paired up with the wrong customer. Isaac looked over at the table he was told to serve, the elderly couple that already seemed a million times nicer than the woman earlier. He gave them a warm smile as he approached the table, notepad in hand. "Good afternoon," Isaac said in a friendly tone, "My name is Isaac and I'll be your waiter today. Can I interest you in anything yo drink, or any appetizers?" He went over everything in his mind. The specials, the discounts, everything. He wanted to give this couple the best treatment possible, especially since they seemed like they were going to do the same for him. He would show the manager that he could do this job.
After you speak you're met with the same kind smiles and endearing looks - and then the old man speaks and you realize it's not a language you've even heard of! Looks like neither of them know how to speak English!
Isaac blinked in surprise when the couple started to speak, his mind taking a few seconds to realize that he didn't understand what they were saying. Yep, fate strikes again, and this time put him up with a couple that didn't speak English. And Isaac, who was by no means a linguist, had no idea what they were saying, or how to speak to them in turn. The lanky teen tried to think of some way he could solve this, without coming off as rude. But then again, if he tried to keep speaking, he was only going to make the situation worse. Guess it was best to just be honest with them.
"I-I'm sorry, I don't understand you." He thought for a moment, "If you'll give me a moment, I'll try to find someone who can speak with you." He hoped they understood, giving them an apologetic smile as he looked to find someone who could understand them.
Fortunately there was a nearby busser that could translate, and he comes over promptly to help out. In no time at all you've got the order put in, and the elderly couple is still smiling at you kindly when you bring out the plates and they leave you a nice hefty tip when they're done. Nice!
Finally, things seemed to be looking up for Isaac. He had managed to find a busser that was able to translate for him, and then everything seemed to work out so much easier for him. Getting their order, he was able to bring the food out to them. By this point, they had managed to establish some way to talk to eachother, and Isaac was able to make sure everything was going well for the couple. If they were tourists after all, he wanted to make sure that their meal was a good one.
And, it would pay off. Once the couple had finished their meal, they seemed quite happy with Isaac's service, and even provided him quite a big tip as well. He made a mental note to share some of the tip with the busser that helped him. In the meantime, it was time to take care of another table.
Your next table is a young couple this time roughly the same age as you, and they make pleasant conversation with you when you approach the table and ask a few questions about the menu; more specifically, if there's anything within their budget. Looks like another easy one!
Well, that had certainly gone over well. Now for the next table. And, thankfully, this one didn't have anyone with a bad attitude as well. A young couple, around his own age. Someone on his level. And they could speak english too! Perfect! He'll hopefully be able to get through this one without needing any help, or anything going wrong.
The couple seemed nice enough, looking for something on a budget. "Hmm, let's see," Isaac murmured, taking a quick glance through the menu. What did they have that would be cheap, and still be a good meal for the couple as well. "The cod and fries are a reasonable price. The club sandwhich and the bacon burger are good too. The chicken alfredo's in quite a large portion as well. A single order can easily be split between two people." He hoped some of these suggestions would be good for them.
The couple looks rather grateful at your suggestions and decide to go with the chicken alfredo to share between them. Like before everything goes smoothly, and once they've finished their meal they leave a small amount of pen on the table as your tip in thanks. Good job!
Well, that had gone swimmingly. Isaac couldn't help but smile as they enjoyed their meal, and then left a small tip for him. They were working on a budget, so he wasn't going to let the small amount bother him. "I'm glad you enjoyed your meal. Have a great day. we hope to see you again." he said with a smile as they finished up and left the restaurant.
and with that table done, Isaac looked around for anyone coming in. It seemed like things were starting to quiet down for a moment. The other bussers were busy at the moment, so Isaac decided to clear his own table, collecting the plates, sending them off to be washed and cleaning up the table and setting it up for the next people to come in, if they did. With that done, Isaac moved over to the side, waiting to see who else would come in.
The next to come in is a group of young women, all terribly pretty in the way of models. The instant they spot Isaac they whisper among each other and make a special request to sit with him, and while they might seem intimidating they're terribly nice, complimenting the color of his hair and skin and requesting a round of mimosas for the table along with a shared appetizer.
This next table, it was something Isaac had certainly not expected. A group of young, beautiful women, and he was here to serve them. To be more specific, they had asked for HIM to serve them specifically. To say he was nervous was a major understatement. And the women complimenting his hair as well didn't help. His face was bright red from the blushing. They were so nice to him, and he wanted to make sure they had the best service possible. So, a round of Mimosas and a shared appetizer. That should be easy enough. Taking their order, he headed over to the kitchen to place the order in, before heading for the bar to do the same with their drinks. As their drinks were being made, he set up some glasses of water and brought it over to the ladies. After all, if you're going to drink, you should have some water too.
As Isaac's setting the water down there's a yell from the guy who's making the drinks and a bunch of crashing noises. Apparently they'd slipped on something - damn non-slip shoes - and ended up knocking over every single drink on the counter they'd made. And what's worse? They'd hit their head on the way down, so now the cafe is temporarily out of a bartender. Oh dear. Those drinks are gonna have to wait.
