The spooky maze wasn't where outfits were necessary or even asked for, but Jules wasn't about to go to the effort of changing out of his zoroark-themed suit for what shouldn't be more than half an hour of diversion, he figured. Or less, perhaps -- something about the way the challenges were described gave him the sneaking suspicion that he'd do much better with a conscious pokémon. As much as Jules was excited by the opportunity his new egg gave him -- while unlabeled, there were some fossil revived pokémon in the original batch! -- he didn't expect the larval form to be exactly helpful.
Perhaps he could just... go in with someone else. Jules loitered at the top of the stairs without quite going into the first room. If he couldn't convince anyone, no harm no foul, but it was worth a shot.
The next person to approach the maze was a blonde girl in a scarecrow's outfit. "Ah, mam'selle? Any chance you're looking for company in the maze?" Jules pressed the button on his egg's pokéball and let it materialize in his hand. "I'm clever, but haven't a pokémon partner that can help me, as it were." Hm. That wasn't exactly selling him as a partner very well. "I'm quite good at figuring out puzzles, though."
The upper half of Jules' face was hidden by his mask, but he still put as much as he could into his dazzling smile.
Aster Chamomile word count • 242 notes I'll describe his outfit in more depth when I make his dance thread, and/or when I post him in someone else's. but if you want to refer to it it's mostly dark grey dress clothes + vest w/ fuzzy collar + mask. oh and black hair extensions. ye.

Aster stumbled out of the party, not drunkenly of course, but as if she just couldn't get the wobble out of her legs. She wasn't a dancer, but somehow a very pretty person had convinced her to try anyway, and she had tripped all over the place and was feeling like jelly now. The scarecrow-costumed girl leaned on the wall for a few moments to regain her composure, panting once out of the main body of the fog, and saw a sign in front of her pointing out the maze.
"You up for somethin' a little different, Iris?" Aster asked her Pokemon, a purple Murkrow alighted on her shoulder. She cawed her confirmation, then pulled her stolen sequin out of her feathers with her beak and began toying with it, catching the light and trying not to slice it in two. Aster stood back up fully, took a deep breath, then made her way up the stairs toward the maze.
When she got up to the top, she was surprised to see a man standing there, dressed up to look like a Zoroark. She took off her scarecrow mask, just a cheap round plastic one you could get at any store, and looked him over. He asked if she was looking for company for the maze, explaining that he had only an egg to accompany him, and she smiled.
"Well, you at least look suited to the party back there.. I thought it was jus' a regular Halloween party!" Aster laughed, giving Iris a scratch on the neck. "I'm Aster, what's your name? I'd love some company, I'm prolly not gonna be great at whatever puzzles are in there, considerin' I can't even read an invitation right."
She did still look a touch unsteady, but being out of that disorienting fog was definitely helping her become stable again.

Following his companion's example, Jules removed his mask too. "Jules." he said, "it's a pleasure to meet you, Aster. And truth be told-- I'd give even odds that I'd show up to a more casual costume party like this, too." He paused, putting his chin with a finger in thought. "I'm not always up to date with slang, but I think current verbiage would call me-- 'extra'?" He shrugged, with significantly more hand flourishing than necessary -- which is to say, any at all. "What was my original--?" He blinked, then smiled. "Ah, right. You've no judgement to fear from me, ma petit épouvantail." He held out his hand towards her in an open gesture, intending for her to take it -- but it didn't quite occur to him to state this aloud. "Shall we?"

"Nice ta meet you!" Aster crowed, Iris copying her in hoarse mimicry. Not that she also said 'nice to meet you' in Common, but.. she made a crow sound. And this is Iris! She was supposed t' sort of be part of the costume, so I only brought her along tonight."
She listened politely, tilting her head slightly when Jules called her something in French. It didn't sound mean, and this guy didn't look like he'd insult her, so she decided not to ask.
"Yeah, that's fair. I just wish ah'd read the invite more carefully! I got all excited seein' what I thought would be a Halloween party and though 'oh gee, I'm a farmer, it'd be cute if I was a scarecrow!' An' then I walk in, and everyone's so formal. It throws ya off, that's all." She stepped back and looked over his outfit again. "Ya do look real nice. You always dress like this? I gotta dress practical most o' the time, but I can look nice, too, I swear!"
She was talking too much, Aster realized, and she gave a sheepish grin. He offered his hand, and she took it, maybe with more grip than she should have? then led the way into the maze.
You enter a room lit by a single torch in its center. Six candles line the walls. On the left wall is a green, a red, and a purple candle. On the right wall is a yellow, an orange, and a blue. Each candle is also labeled for the colorblind. A backlit plaque reads: "Do not fear the storm. It comes after."

[On mobile, so no post table this time, lol.]
"Lovely to meet you, Iris," Jules said with a grin towards the bird. "She, and the rest of your costume, are delightful, truly. And... no, I'm not always fancy. I try to look nice without much effort, and some would argue class." Leaning in close as if for a secret, Jules whispered, "Honestly, most days I wear Alolan shirts to work."
It was at this point that Jules looked around and remembered they'd already walked into the first room, and the accompanying puzzle. "Well," he said, "I'm not sure about the text, but my first instinct is to group the primary and secondary colors together. Do you have any objections to that, my dear?"
Ooc: if aster agrees go ahead and narrate him moving the candles, if you want.

"'Do not fear th' storm, it comes after'... What's that s'posed to mean?" murmured Aster, squinting at the plaque. Iris listened to her trainer, nodding her head solemnly, as though she knew exactly the answer. Of course, she didn't, but Iris wanted to appear smart to this stranger that had just complimented both her and Aster, so she wanted to look like she did anyway.
Aster listened to Jules, then looked around at the candles and nodded. "Tha's as good a guess as any, I'd say. I've no idea what else it could be!" The red-haired man proceeded to start moving the candles around, and Aster decided to help, grabbing the orange candle in the center of one wall while Jules grabbed the red candle on the other. They replaced the candles in the opposite spots and waited to see what would happen. Iris crowed ominously, trying to help the atmosphere.
The door lights up red for a moment and buzzes. From out of the shadows, a horde of Lampent and Chandelure come flying in, swirling about and screaming. Everything goes dark, and flames surround you on all sides, closing in. Finally, they stop, and the next moment you are back outside the entrance. You have been ejected.

Inhuman screeching, a rush of black limbs grabbing, hands and legs and hair. Flames, close enough to be felt, to sting, but not to leave a burn. Blackness.
And then, quite suddenly, everything was normal again. Jules blinked and looked around, finding himself and Aster at the top of the stairs, where they were not a minute before.
"Ah. Sans much information, I was hoping to rely on process of elimination..." Jules smiled ruefully at his companion. "I suppose we were eliminated, instead."

The swarm of ghosts and ghastly purple flames surrounded Aster and her maze partner, spinning faster and faster until she thought she'd never catch her breath again, then finally slowed and disappeared. She found that the two of them had been ejected from the maze!
"Ah, rats.." Aster cursed, kicking at the wall. "Ah thought we'd be able t' puzzle it out, too, but looks like that's not allowed.."
She sighed deeply. "Ah don't want t' go back t' that party, it's too much fer me, I think. But I don't know if I wanna go straight back t' town either." Iris clutched Aster's shoulder tightly, apparently frightened by the ejection by the ghosts. Aster gave her some head scratches to help her calm back down, earning a loosening of the talons digging into her burlap sack.
"What're you gonna do now? Head back in?" As Aster asked, a pair of people approached the top of the stairs, chattering excitedly about the maze and bragging back and forth about how they were going to win all of the prizes.
"That's fair," Jules said. "I don't think going into the maze again would be wise. If the resident ghosts don't care for trial and error, I can't imagine they'd look too kindly on trying gain after having been explicitly removed." He made sure he said that loudly enough that the approaching attendees could have heard him, but they sounded overconfident enough that they may not have taken advice if it slapped them in the face.
"I don't mind staying here for a while, though. After all, the company's good," he said, smiling in Aster's direction.
At about this point, the egg's pokéball began to shake in Jules' pocket. Startled, he got it out, and watched as his new pokémon made itself known.

She shook her head. "Yeah, I'd guess they don't look kindly upon tryin' to go back in after gettin' tossed out. They wouldn'ta tossed us out if they wanted't be welcomin'."
Aster leaned in closer to get a good look at the egg. "Oh, what kind of egg is that? It looks real sturdy." She caught herself and chuckled. "Ah guess I'll find out in a few moments, huh?"
Iris was curious about the egg, too, and alighted on Jules's shoulder to get a closer look as it cracked and shook.
