It had all started when he bought the Toxel. [break][break] Kaisei was walking away from Bewear's Bountiful Boutique when from out of nowhere some breeder accosted him, saying are you a traveling trainer, there's been a terrible mix-up with the egg I sold and I need you to track down the customer and bring them back. Kaisei had initially refused, asking why can't you just send a text, this is a waste of my time, but when the breeder had offered to loan him a bicycle - loan to gift, upon proof of message delivery, no less - it suddenly hit him how gorgeous she was and he simply couldn't say no. [break][break] (The bike, not the breeder. He was so-so.) [break][break] She was painted a shiny anodized orange, and handled like a dream as Kaisei maneuvered her down the long, long route that led to East Arciel. The aura trail couldn't have been more than a few hours old. It had taken some doing to pick it up initially, asking the breeder which eggs specifically the customer had handled, but luckily the customer's crimson-and-blue aura was a stark contrast to the breeder's pale yellow, and he had arrived during a lull in business, so there weren't too many confounding traces to sort through. Kaisei kept his sight activated, doing his best to follow the mystery aura as it wound through the mountains. [break][break] Hikaru rode along, perched on his shoulders, and carrying the envelope in her mouth. He'd forgotten to put her into a Pokeball before getting swept up in this whole mess. Go figure. As you ride your bike along the trail, the path starts to become rougher and rockier with the increased rocks and small pebbles along the path. The bike is practically vibrating with the different bump variations, making it hard to hold onto the handlebars or to keep the wheels straight. Careful!
Kaisei snarled and gripped the handlebars tighter, as the bike bumped and rattled down the trail. Of all places, this person had to be wandering through the mountains? Eventually, his frustration reached a boiling point. He got off the bike, leaned it against a rock, and ran down the trail, kicking aside all of the pebbles and rocks he could reach with his foot, before returning to the bike and simultaneously hopping on while kicking off against the ground to give him a burst of speed. [break][break] He grinned as he flew down the trail. His elation lasted for all of ten seconds. Then something sent a jolt of electricity down his spine. [break][break] Kaisei, Hikaru, and the bike lit up like a Christmas tree. The trainer's hands stiffened and by the time he regained his grip on the handlebars, it was too late to stop the bike from careening directly into a small rock. The bike bounced upward, and he could feel himself flying through the air. A scream echoed through the mountain range, abruptly cut short when his face planted into the dirt. [break][break] I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm-- oh sweet Arceus! My phone! Phone. Wallet. Pokeballs. Everything was there. He was fine. He dug into his pocket for the phone, was relieved to discover that the protective case had been worth it after all, and tapped the Camera app. It was already set to selfie-cam. His face... thankfully, there was only a bit of dirt on it, which he briskly rubbed off, along with patting down a few stray hairs that had stood on end from residual static. [break][break] His clothes, on the other hand. Fuckety fucking shit. The leather jacket he could deal, scuff marks were a sign of building character after all, but his pants! Caked with dirt and dust, and even a hole torn in the right knee, they were absolutely ruined. The knee itself had some scraping and bruising from taking the brunt of the impact of the fall, but Kaisei'd had worse. Lastly, he checked on the bike. After prodding it to make sure it wasn't still sparking, he stood it up and tested the pedals, the steering, the wheels. They were fine. [break][break] Oh, right, and his Pokemon. [break][break] "You little brat," he said, rounding on Hikaru with his arms crossed and a death glare. "As soon I am done with this delivery we're turning right back around--" [break][break] Hikaru used Tearful Look! [break][break] "And I'm taking you right back--" [break][break] Hikaru used Tearful Look! [break][break] "To-- To the--" [break][break] Hikaru used Tearful Look! [break][break] "...the... sto..." [break][break] It's super effective! [break][break] Kaisei sighed and gathered up the Toxel in his arms. "Just don't cry on me, okay? We're cool." [break][break] They rode on. The path eventually gets a little narrower, but it's not too hard to deal with - until you turn a corner and see the round, heaving chest of a Snorlax deep in slumber. How could anyone have gotten past this thing???? Riding around it is out of the question as it's so big, it completely takes every available inch of road. But you could always go over it...
[attr="class","queentext"] Hikaru saw the thing in the road before Kaisei did, and let out a cry. The trainer was still frazzled from his last ordeal, and although the road was smoother, the trip seemed to be getting no easier. He brought the bike to a screeching halt in front of the Snorlax and stared at the enormous size of the thing. It was over ten feet tall, but laying on its back was enough to block the entire road, so going around was right out. At Kaisei's height he could barely see over its belly, which heaved up and down as the Pokemon snored away. [break][break] Wasn't there a history of this kind of thing making the news? "Snorlax Blocks Celadon City Entrance to Cycling Road, Trainers Advised to Look for Another Way Around." He vaguely recalled the Rangers eventually driving the thing away with music. Kaisei pulled out his phone again, this time selecting the music player, and scrolled through the local radio stations, trying to jog his memory. He eventually settled on some bombastic Classical music but before hitting play, suddenly remembered that the news story had mentioned something about the grumpy rage the Snorlax was in when it finally woke up, and decided against it. He didn't have the team to take down this beast in a straight fight and he sincerely doubted that calling the Rangers for help would do any good. [break][break] So, it was over or under then. Digging a man-sized tunnel under the Snorlax? He could do it, he had a Drilbur, but contemplating the amount of time the small mole Pokemon would take to enlarge the tunnel to be big enough for himself and his bike was more than he was willing to spare, not to mention that crawling through the dirt would probably mess up his shirt in addition to his already destroyed pants. (A moment of silence for the pants...) [break][break] "Hikaru." His voice dropped low, and the Toxel immediately snapped to attention. [break][break] "We are going to do something very brave... or very, very stupid." [break][break] The plan was as simple as it was utterly ridiculous: Crawl over the Snorlax. With some creative tweaking of the straps on his backpack, Kaisei rigged the bicycle to dangle from his back, and began to crawl up the side of the Snorlax on his hands and knees. He spread out as much weight as he could across his entire body surface, not wanting to put undue pressure on any given area and possibly set off one of the Snorlax's sore points. Hikaru followed, also in a crawl, although she needed a little extra help by way of the Snorlax's arm first. [break][break] They were crossing the midpoint. Kaisei's cheeks were burning, whether with embarrassment or with the cold mountain air, he couldn't say. Suddenly, Hikaru stopped, sitting on her haunches and pressing down on the Snorlax's belly. Boing. She let out a noise that Kaisei could only interpret as a giggle. [break][break] "What are you doing?!" he hissed. [break][break] Hikaru slapped the belly, then started jumping up and down on it. Boing. Boing! Boing! [break][break] "Nonononono STOP!" Kaisei's voice was a harsh whisper as he reached out to physically manhandle the Toxel back to the surface. "We need to be very quiet, remember? We are not playing!" The Toxel tilted her head to the side in confusion. This wasn't a game? "We are on a serious mission," Kaisei continued. "We have--" he pointed to the letter-- "a message to deliver. In order to do that, we need to get from here," he said, pointing downward, "to there," at which point he reached out to point to the far side of the road. Thankfully the aura trace was still there, it was faint, but he could still see it. "But in order to get there, we need to let the big scary Pokemon sleep." [break][break] The small purple Pokemon took in all this with solemnity. She resumed her crawling position, but couldn't resist nuzzling the cream-colored belly one last time. Thankfully, the layers of thick fat acted as a cushion, absorbing whatever static electricity might have been generated. The pair slowly dragged themselves to the far side of the belly, and then blessedly reached solid earth again. Kaisei let himself down first, unstrapping the bike from himself, then picked up Hikaru and seated her in. [break][break] Not a moment too soon, as a loud snore rumbled through the mountains. Kaisei looked with horror as the Snorlax slowly stretched, blinked twice, stared right at Kaisei... rolled over onto its side with a heaving thud, and went back to sleep. [break][break] He rode like the wind, away from the Snorlax, not looking back. As you continue on your way you can hear the steady snores of the Snorlax fading behind you, and the path even gets a little wider, the ground a little smoother. Keep this up and you'll track the customer down in no time!
"Hikaru, get me a snack, will you?" [break][break] Dangling from Kaisei's shoulders, the Toxel unzipped her trainer's backpack and rummaged through it. When she finally emerged for air, it was to grunt and firmly shake her head at Kaisei. [break][break] "What the hell do you mean there's no snacks?" Ugh, what was it that breeder had said again? Something about snacks... Berries? "You like berries, huh?" he said, earning a head nod from Hikaru. [break][break] He took stock of the terrain. The ground was getting flatter and wider, and the aura trace he had been straining to follow had even deepened, gathered in largeish clumps, indicating that the trainer they were following had stayed in this area for quite some time. So of course, Kaisei kept pedaling. However, he took advantage of the easier ride to be a little more lax, leaning his elbows on the handlebars to steer while he Chuugled "berry" on his mobile phone. Hikaru leaned in to stare as Kaisei scrolled through the pictures. Cheri... Chesto... Rawst (ugh, no!)... Pecha! She vigorously thumped her head up and down, banging it against Kaisei's shoulder in the process. "Oh, so Pecha is your favorite?" Kaisei put the phone away and turned to smile at Hikaru. [break][break] "How about this? I'll make you a deal. You get me all my snacks for this trip, and when we get back into the city, you can have an extra-large Pecha smoothie. My treat." [break][break] Hikaru responded with delight and wrapped her arms around Kaisei's neck, though she was able to refrain from shocking him this time. He heard the rustling of plastic as she dug around in his backpack, and eventually handed him a packet of trail mix with a smiling Smeargle printed on the front. He tore open the packet of Schmoargle with his teeth, poured half of it into his mouth, and handed the remainder to Hikaru while he noisily chewed away. As your bike continues down the road, you get the strange feeling that you're being watched. Before you can stop and investigate, though, something suddenly gets caught between the spokes of your bike. Is that... a knife?
He thought everything was going well. Of course he had to. Then he heard a metallic creak and as the bike came to a sudden stop, he looked down and saw... [break][break] A knife. A human knife. [break][break] "Hikaru, get down!" [break][break] Kaisei threw himself off the vehicle and dragged it over to the cliffside, wedging himself into as tight a space as possible between the bicycle and solid stone. His heart was pounding as he frantically searched with all of his senses, including his aura sight, left, right, forward, even up-- but saw nothing, not a person, or even any creature remotely shaped like a person. [break][break] What the hell? [break][break] Okay, settle down, Kaisei, think. His first guess had been muggers laying in wait, or that the person he had been tracking was going to turn around and accuse him of being some crazy stalker when really he had just wanted to deliver them a damn letter. What was that about no good deed going unpunished? But no, it wasn't any good to speculate on things that clearly weren't happening right now. It was an ordinary kitchen knife, like the kind you might buy at the department store, so it being a Pokemon didn't make any sense either. Wasn't like Pokemon would buy human tools when they all already had their own natural attacks. But if it wasn't a person or a Pokemon, the only logical explanation was... [break][break] Ghosts. [break][break] Well, it figured. He didn't have anything particularly effective at dealing with Pokemon ghosts right now (damn 6-Pokeball limit on his belt), to say nothing of human ghosts. He supposed the least awful course of action would be to show he meant no harm, and skedaddle as fast as possible. Once he had gotten a moment to catch his breath, it was time to put the plan into action. [break][break] "Oh, no!" he called out dramatically. "This place is surely haunted! I'm so afraid, I must escape from here right now!" Reaching down to pull the knife out by the handle, he tossed it into some shrubbery at the side of the road, before pedaling off. Hopefully the ghosts got the hint that he wished to leave them alone, and he would be left alone in turn. [break][break] Kaisei heard Hikaru whimper and felt a pinch through the back of his leather jacket as she clung on tightly. Arceus damn it. She was actually afraid of ghosts, wasn't she? As you keep riding, the ground below you seems to.... rise up??? Shakily??? As it turns around, you realize it's a Steelix half buried in the ground, perhaps taking a nap. The giant snake glares at you.
The entire ground started shaking. An earthquake? Kaisei stepped a foot off his bike and braced himself, noticing that, strangely, there were puffs of dust and dirt being kicked up in a line of some sort. The he looked ahead and saw the Steelix that had apparently been the cause of the shaking. Still half-buried in the dirt, the Steelix shook its massive head slowly, as if waking up from a long nap. With its back turned to Kaisei, it didn't notice him at first, but a yelp from Hikaru seemed to catch its attention. It slowly swung its head around and glared. [break][break] Kaisei glared back. "What?" he said flatly. [break][break] The Steelix's impression was impassive. [break][break] Kaisei's hand dropped to Shion's Pokeball on his belt, and he pressed the button to enlarge it. Oh, ghosts were one thing. This was a Pokemon. Pokemon he could deal with. [break][break] "You're in my way," he said to the Steelix. "I have had a very long, very tiring day, and there is a message I have found myself needing to deliver down this very road which you are now blocking. Now, are you going to move aside, because I'm asking so very nicely, or am I going to have to go through you?" [break][break] The Steelix looked... not intimidated, but something else. Embarrassed? It lowered its head and looked about, as if suddenly appraising just how much of the road its body had lain down on. Then slowly, slowly, it started to move again. Kaisei had shrunk down Shion's Pokeball in order to hoist the bike onto his shoulders; otherwise the paint would have been scraped clean off by the movements of the massive metal snake. It was an uncomfortable stretch of time before the Steelix had finally unearthed its lower half, and dragged it awkwardly onto what could charitably be called the shoulder of the road, while Kaisei was standing on a patch of unworked dirt barely larger than his own two feet. [break][break] He couldn't ride the bike so much as manually roll it until they had passed the mass of Steelix tracks. "Come on, Hikaru. It can't be too much farther now," he said, noting with some concern the position of the sun in the sky as they rode on.
