The Training Grounds facility at Plum City was even larger than Birch's - it was around the size of a small airport. The sheer size of it took Shalin's breath away when she entered. There were practice facilities for every kind of Pokémon-related activity imaginable. Thankfully there was ample signage present to direct her where to go; with only a map and directory, she would have become lost for sure.
With the weather warming up, Shalin was certain the aquatic training areas would be busy, and most of them were. There were four giant, rectangular wave pools, four giant standard pools, and three courses just to practice with swimming Pokémon. Most of them were very busy, with one exception.
There was a figure-eight shaped course in the northeast corner. Shalin wondered how such a course could be safe, given the intersection in the center. Her question was answered when she arrived - there was a short tunnel in the course's center, underneath where the starting line was. Creative use of the third dimension is something she never thought about with aquatic courses - this would be more interesting than she thought!
No less than a week or two ago, she had left several of her Pokémon with a professional trainer. He charged her an arm and a leg, but said they would be "ready for evolution" when he was done with them. She released Classie, Prower, and Vannifar into the water, as well as Kiku and Serena a distance away from the track to observe their friends. Seconds after they had emerged, all four of them started gleaming so brightly that their combined light was visible from almost anywhere in the aquatic wing of the Training Grounds. Even after covering her eyes, she felt like they were burning from the light emitted by not one, but four Pokémon evolving at the same time.
Serena and Kiku, now a Persian and Skuntank, were both around their Trainer's height now, if not taller. Prower's flotation sac grew with him in size, the excited Floatzel swimming circles around a confused-looking Classie. Vannifar, now a hulking Tentacruel, floated toward the edge of the pool, rapidly blinking her bio-luminescent, red skin patches. Prower's smile turned into a grin, and Classie couldn't help but wear a broad smile as well.
Shalin opened her eyes to all of the newly-evolved Pokémon and fell to her knees in joy. "We've been through so much together, and now we're finally here. I could not have done it without all of you." She couldn't control being reduced to tears. "Thank you. All of you." Serena walked up to her, resting a paw on her shoulder...while she had her claws extended still. "Ow!" Shalin yelped as the Persian accidentally dug into the surface of her partner's skin a little farther than she wanted. "Careful, girl!"
When she looked up at her three aquatic Pokémon, she found all three of them were making a case to be first. "Tell you what, we'll make this a relay. Vannifar, you'll take the first lap; Classie, the second; Prower, the third." All three of them let out excited cries. Even Shalin was smiling brighter this time - it wasn't so cold outside that she'd freeze when stepping out of the water.
As Shalin mounted up, Vannifar drifted toward the center of the starting line, Prower and Classie quickly yielded to one side each. The Floatzel's tails left a wake that caused Shalin and her Tentacruel to bob up and down on the surface. It was a good thing she had saved Prower for last - apparently the orange sea weasel had some real power behind him. Red, yellow, and green lights progressively lit up on the arch just in front of the line, a timer starting on the green one. The two took off down the overpass...

Shalin could at least fit almost her entire upright body on the giant Tentacruel, making holding on much easier. Her legs still drifted behind a little bit, but it wasn't too uncomfortable - certainly not as much as if Vannifar were smaller. When the Pokémon broke away from the starting line into more open water, she heard the sound of water sloshing violently underneath her, followed by a sharp increase in speed.
"Yeeee!" Shalin let out a loud yelp of a different kind - this one not of pain, but of surprise. She tensed up dug into her Pokémon a little two tightly, Vannifar sounding a yelp of her own when the girl accidentally cut into her watery skin withher nails. "Sorry!" she cried back. "Wasn't expecting you to be that fast!"
Vannifar had just started swimming, and was already faster than Levy was. Holding on was also a bit more awkward than she thought - unlike with her other Pokémon, there was little to grab in front of her. Only the Tentacruel's hardened, red skin was firm enough for her to hold. She could get used to swimming straight, but there was a long, gentle right turn coming up. Vannifar tilted to her right, some of her tentacles breaching the surface as she began sweeping the corner on her own.

Shalin shifted her weight to her left into Vannifar's turn. It was a good thing she started early - the rider was discovering that although Tentacruel were fast, they were not particularly maneuverable. As the two were rounding the corner, they were drifting farther and farther to the outside of the course. Shalin's left foot brushed against the pool's wall at the end of the curve, the swimmer pushing off the wall to get back in the track's center and resume accelerating down the course.
Shalin wasn't concerned about her lap time at all; if anything, Vannifar was too focused on performance for a first ride. The most important thing was to not fall; if she felt like she was going to fall, it was important for her to fall to her right or left, not directly backwards. With the kind of speed the Tentacruel was putting on, some of her tentacles had to be breaching the surface. If she fell into the net of tentacles, it would not only be painful, but she could get tangled up in them easily. Typically she rode aquatic Pokémon without a saddle, but this was one Pokémon she would need to look into getting one crafted for.
Vannifar began sinking beneath the surface, Shalin taking a deep breath. The two were about to pass into a short tunnel underneath the start of the course. Having put goggles on beforehand for this reason, she closed her mouth and held her breath as she and her mount drifted below the waves...

Coming up on the other side of the tunnel, the two were getting the hang of it! The key was to start turning earlier than with a more maneuverable Pokémon like Levy. After surfacing, Shalin lightly tugged on her Pokémon, Vannifar slowing down slightly - just enough to comfortably drift along the long, left turn back to the starting line where Prower and Classie anxiously waited their turn. She stepped out of the pool, a little chilly but not unbearable like it was when training with Levy. The Lapras drifted toward her as close to the edge as possible, allowing Shalin to climb right on top of the center of her shell. She remembered from the last time she was at the pool - if the other kid's Lapras was an indication, they were a lot faster than they looked, but were among the easiest water Pokémon to control.

The lights turned from red to yellow to green, Classie picking up speed a bit more quickly than Vannifar did. The bumps on her shell made it much easier for Shalin to hold on - she was quickly realizing why Lapras had been on and off the capture ban list in Kanto and Johto for so long. Once Classie had reached the more open water, it became even more apparent - she was very quick to respond to turning commands, unlike Vannifar.
Another thing that took Shalin by surprise is how level she kept her shell even while turning - she could barely feel her mount's angle changing as the two rounded the long, lazy right turn. Even though Shalin started her turn early, the Lapras' flipper didn't as much as graze the pool's inner wall. The large swimmer started weaving from the inside to the outside of the pool at Shalin's command.
Though controlling Classie was easy, she didn't seem particularly fast or nimble. Swimming with her was kind of...boring. Her front fins broke the surface as she crested a small wave toward the end of the long, right turn. Remembering what she had seen from both on the ship and Birch's training facility, Lapras had one way to go faster. They weren't fast on water, but they were fast on ice. "Classie, use your Ice Shard!" Shalin shouted.

"Yaaaah!" Shalin shouted, caught off-guard when Classie's flippers started freezing the water underneath her, the Lapras picking up great speed while sliding around the course's backstretch. The heated pool quickly melted her freezing trail, but it only needed to be solid long enough for her to slide across. When the trail of ice stopped, she was still moving very fast--far faster than around the first curve. "Yeehaw!" the rider couldn't help but raise one of her arms skyward as Classie bounced along the surface. Though the ice-type was not a particularly fast swimmer without the use of Ice Shard, she was adept at holding her momentum for a long time.
The overpass was coming up quite a bit faster than Shalin thought, the girl yanking her arm downward again and holding on with both hands again. She took a deep breath before commanding Classie to dive. Visibility was dramatically reduced beneath the surface, small lights on both sides of the tunnel one of her few ways of seeing where she was swimming. The tunnel wasn't particularly long, Shalin only having to hold her breath for around ten seconds. When the two had surfaced, the course wound upward and to the left, a gentle current counteracting gravity just enough to keep the water steady. "Can you turn while doing that?" Classie let out a cute cry and nodded, raising her right flipper and lowering her left. A cold mist surrounded both flippers, the girl holding on with both hands this time in case.

The mist coalesced into ice, this time Classie's flippers freezing the waves beneath her at an angle. She raced around the gentle corner at the perfect angle, kicking up a cold water spray. Shalin herself was screaming, closing her mouth as soon as the freezing water touched her face. She was remembering how difficult her craft was - if a Lapras' Ice Shard was giving her this much trouble, she wasn't going to make it when riding on a wild Pokémon!
When Shalin's arms started shaking, ready to give out at seemingly any moment, the highly intelligent Lapras aborted her Ice Shard and started gliding through the rest of the upstream turn. Classie's right flipper crashed back into the water, splashing her rider with another spray of cold water. The sudden tilt flung Shalin from the shell and into the warm, lazy current on the inside edge of the pool. After she had drifted a few feet ahead of her Pokémon, the water was quite warm. It felt good, warming her up more quickly than she thought it would. Classie swam up to her and extended her fin to help her climb back up, but Shalin shook her head. "I'm fine drifting the rest of the way."

After drifting past the starting line, Shalin reached for the poolside ladder and started to catch her breath. The excited Prower, creating quite a wake with his twin tails, zipped alongside his trainer with a big grin on his face. "I need a minute, Prower," Shalin answered the nagging Floatzel, his long air bladder keeping him on the surface. Getting bored with waiting for Shalin, he started circling Classie, the Lapras getting annoyed with him after a while. Seeing enough, Shalin recalled her Poké Ball, pushed away from the ladder, and began treading water. "Alright, Prower, swim underneath me and I'll try to float onto you."
Less than a minute later, Shalin felt her aquatic partner lifting her just above the surface and toward the course's starting line. Burying her hands as deep as she could in his shallow fur, she felt him angle slightly down when the red light illuminated. On yellow, she felt a tremendous amount of tingling in her arms and lower body, a loud humming sound filling the air around the course and earning a scowl from the lifeguard on duty.
Green.
Prower lowered his whirling tails into the water, Shalin letting out an almost screech-like cry as the two rocketed down the overpass. The humming noise was muffled from the water, but the tingling didn't stop - if anything, it seemed to grow more intense. "He's going to make me sore by the end of this," Shalin thought, leaning to her right the best she could without losing her balance...

Responding to Shalin's motion, Prower turned sharply to his right, almost grazing the pool's inner wall. Shalin was starting to become dizzy, both from the shaking and from the unexpected sharp turn. She tried to lean away from the wall to correct, Prower quickly responding by cutting all the way to the outer wall.
The change in direction felt almost instant, the whiplash flinging Shalin from her perch and along the wall's outer edge. Short of breath again, she started hanging from the pool's edge again, Prower quick to support her by swimming underneath and letting his buoyancy lift them both to the surface. "Wow...you're...fast!" Shalin said between heavy breaths. Prower nodded, drifting with the pool's slight current.
When she felt ready, the girl faced forward again. "Not quite so fast this time, okay?" Nodding back to his trainer, the swift water-type eased Shalin into his speed this time, though he still sounded like a roaring watercraft afterward. The rider shifted her weight around after completing the long, lazy curve, trying to get a feel for how to properly turn aboard a Pokémon so sensitive to commands.

Gentle and small motions seemed to be the key. With some practice, she could take advantage of Prower's responsiveness in more thrilling ways, but that would need to be done in more open water. There were larger rectangular pools for that purpose, but all of them were very busy - she would need to come back at trough hours. Crazy thoughts rushed through her head as Prower picked up the pace, her hair standing on end from the constant shaking.
Prower started deflating his air bladder as the two whizzed toward the tunnel. Shalin took a deep breath right before her mount submerged, the two watching the lights go by. She tugged lightly in many different directions, trying to get used to movement in three dimensions. Prower was quick to oblige, the two circling the tunnel's edges. It was great practice for flight training, which she looked forward to completing with Flit.
When they reached the end of the tunnel, she pulled upward harder on her Pokémon. Flipping his tails downward, Prower rapidly rose through the water, breaching the surface and making a graceful jump. The wind generated from his whirling tails created large waves that rippled outward, some of them even cresting the pool's walls.

"Yeeeeee-haaaaa!!!" Shalin let out a whooping cry, Prower inflating his air sac to keep them above the surface upon landing. She was tempted to call for an Aqua Jet but resisted - that would be appropriate for more open water. She flinched at the sudden bur short burst of speed when her partner half-submerged again, causing her to slide back a few inches but maintaining her hold.
Having little trouble with the rest of the course, the girl let go of her Pokémon, drifting toward the ladder. Her lower body felt somewhat like jelly as she climbed out of the pool, recalling her team. Every time she came back to this, was she training her Pokémon, or were they training her? Either way, before she was entering any races or pulling any silly stunts with them, she would be coming back here for a lot more practice.
