Josh had eased Elliot in for a reason - Absol weren't known for their racing capabilities, but they could compete with a lot of Pokémon if properly raised. He heard the sound of two Pokémon being recalled, but didn't even turn his head. He was concentrating hard, as if he was in qualifying. The Absol kicked up grass all around them as she slowly accelerated. He was sure Elliot was smiling. He would really be smiling soon.
Josh felt Elliot wrap his arms tightly around him as the gate came into sight. Most of the terrain was flat, but there was a deep, wide ditch that served as one final obstacle. While the road wound toward a bridge on the west side, Josh had other plans. Making sure his helmet's visor was secured, he heard Elliot's shouting, to which he answered, "It is! It's about to get more so!" Josh slightly adjusted Twilight's direction to be completely straight at the south gate before letting out another shout. "Twilight, use your Quick Attack!"
For about six seconds, Twilight tore her own trail through the grass, the biting wind surrounding her and her sharp claws shredding the tall stuff in her path. Her gait matched that of a sprinting feline, rapid and powerful strides shaking up even Josh a bit. It would make great practice for the race later in the week, where he would be expected to do this on a regular basis. "Alright, jump it!" Josh shouted, the deep and wide ditch approaching so fast it could only be seen straight ahead.
Just as the rush of speed was about to wear out, the white blur flexed her legs, then sprung into the air. She carried the momentum of her Quick attack as she sailed over the ditch, the two able to see over the gate for a brief moment before landing. Josh made sure Twilight had plenty of room to comfortably slow to a stop - any form of cornering at this speed would almost certainly fling Elliot off, he thought.
After seconds that must have seemed like minutes to the younger one, Twilight stopped to let the two off at the south gate to Cedar, the sun just above the western horizon. "We're here!" Josh smiled, his breath a bit heavy. "That got me warmed up - can't wait for this weekend!"
