It had been some time since she'd been back to Birch City, and perhaps longer still since she had been out on a journey with her pokemon. Having spent a good amount of time up north she had debated whether or not she wanted to return south and explore the lands beyond, and the extra vacation time had been both a blessing and a curse in disguise. A curse because she was convinced she was lax in exercise, and also a blessing because it had been nice not to have anything to really do.
What had ultimately cemented her decision to venture south instead of north had been the simple fact that she had an abundance of fire-types, and she didn't want to run the risk of them getting too worn out after battling on the ocean over and over again.
Or at least, that had been the plan; eventually she realized that, hey, she had a lot of unhatched eggs that probably could use some hatching, and so after deliberating on which ones to take with her she eventually settled on three, all of which she was uncertain of their species. She would soon found out, though, especially given how she thought she could imagine two of them were shaking already, though the third remained completely still.
She'd decided to switch out her team a little, too; Aron remained snug in his pokeball, napping away, while Reddy scampered along happily beside her, a little leash tied to his back that was held by the newly-evolved Fembra, who despite the mean look on her face was still as timid and shy as ever. If anything, the fact that she looked meaner only made her all the more shy, but she managed to keep a firm hold on Reddy regardless as they continued along down the path.
Faolan had been perusing the data in her dex when her attention was caught by Reddy letting out a squawk of indignation and the wet smack of something hit the ground. Immediately her nose was assaulted with an awful smell and, looking up, she saw a round, orange creature trying to duck behind a tree that was far skinnier than it with minimal luck. Reddy was bent over, investigating something half-squashed into the ground while Fembra tried vainly to tug him away, and as Faolan got closer she saw that it was -
- oh. Oh, no. Was that pokemon actually throwing...?
Immediately she raised a hand to her mouth to cover the atrocious smell, shifting the trio of eggs in her hold and turning to stare down the Cufant peeking out behind the tree. The mischievous look in its eyes was undeterred in the face of her stern one, and although Faolan recalled this species from the various construction sites in Galar right now she held little to no love for it.
"Are you serious? Are you actually serious?" Having not heard that tone of voice from their trainer before, both Reddy and Fembra looked at first astonished, and then a little nervous - though Reddy was quick to pick up a stone from the ground when Fembra's attention was diverted and immediately start choking on it. The Cufant made a trumpeting noise that sounded suspicious like a cackle, and then immediately started shuffling to the nearest bush as fast as it could with intent to make more... ammo.
With a huff, Faolan reached over and unclipped Reddy's leash, and as soon as the little bird felt the weight off he immediately ran forward with all the hyperactivity of a toddler about to do something particularly destructive. He had just gotten within reach of the Cufant when Faolan called out for an Ember attack - she didn't want Reddy to get too filthy - and the Torchic immediately unleashed a barrage of flames that heated the Cufant's steely body red hot. The Cufant let out another bellow that sounded remarkably like a cackle and immediately tucked its body into a Rollout, but before it could actually attack Faolan took its moment of distraction to throw an Ultra ball as hard as she could at the creature. Mostly out of spite, honestly.
The wait for the pokeball to stop shaking seemed like an eternity, and when it finally clicked with a note of finality she let out a sigh. Reddy ran forward to pick up the ball before she could protest, but thankfully it immediately disappeared, whisked away to a PC box far away from here. She had a feeling she would have to wash the Cufant before taking it anywhere, and maybe give it a lecture on what it should and shouldn't do when it was feeling particularly mischievous.
Reddy start hustling his little bird self back to where she stood, and Fembra stood with the leash waiting. Seeing that, Reddy immediately veered sharply to the side and ran right up to Faolan, fluffing his feathers up and flapping his wings before running to squat down by her side. It was almost as if he were saying "look, look how good I can be!" to avoid being leashed again. She peered at him for a moment or two, and when it became obvious he wasn't going to move unless she did she gave Fembra an exasperated look.
"It's all right. Let's let him burn off a bit of his energy, yeah?"
Fembra came over and began to dutifully tuck the leash away - though when the eggs in Faolan's pack began to jump, cracks appearing all along their surface, the newly-evolved Charmeleon gave a raspy cry and pointed at them with her sharper claws. Gingerly, the blonde set down her bags and opened the flaps of the two moving compartments, waiting for the pokemon to emerge.
Having hatched several eggs during her journey in Arciel thus far, she knew exactly what to expect - down to Reddy standing off to the side, pecking at the bits of egg shell as the two newly hatched horse and donkey pokemon shook themselves tiredly free. They were exactly the same size, but terribly different in appearance; the Mudbray was a familiar site from Galar, though not necessarily native to it, and as she stared at it the creature immediately bent down to start... eating dirt. That was lovely. The Ponyta stood a bit away, peering imperiously first at Faolan, then down the Mudbray with a serious, unreadable look in its features.
She knew how to ride, of course, and being faced with the prospect of two rideable pokemon was a little exciting. It wouldn't help whenever she needed to cross oceans, but when they evolved it would be a lot quicker to get from route to route, she thought.
Reddy was making fast friends with the Mudbray, who had gone from eating dirt to rolling around in it quite happily, bleating all the while. The Torchic had immediately begun to copy his newfound friend and also started rolling around in the dirt, and Faolan was so distracted with managing the pair of them - mainly Reddy, since she was fairly certain a Mudbray was most pleasant when they were coated in mud - that she didn't notice the Illumise scampering away into a bush.
She'd managed to get Reddy out of the dirt and mud - though the Torchic still had a few stains over his feathers and trotted along looking quite pleased with himself - and got his leash clipped back to the harness he was wearing, the other end held by Fembra. The Mudbray and Rapidash had gone into their own poke balls without much fuss, and the trio continued on their way, Faolan's load significantly lighter now that two out of the three eggs had hatched. She crunched over the egg shells as she passed them by, and busied herself with reading up on the dex entries for both to ensure she had some kind of idea on how to manage them.
Reddy's attention was eventually caught by a rotund, diapered bird sitting high up in a tree lazily napping. While he ran to engage it, the leash stopped him short and he was yanked back and sent rolling in the dirt; an action which actually caught Faolan's attention, and she gave it with an exasperated sigh. She'd never really babysat before and now, with Reddy, she didn't think she had much patience for it - at least not at her age. In a few years, maybe, but she wasn't even going to think about that right now, not when the only romantic prospect she had at the moment was someone who she was sure would very much not be up to the idea of -
- why is she thinking about kids right now. Get it together, Faolan.
Shaking her head, she ushered Reddy and Fembra along past the gigantic baby of a bird, not wanting to fight it or catch it and risk those thoughts burning into her mind again.
Faolan was so determined to get away from the big baby diaper bird that she didn't realize the way the path narrowed out, taking her down a way that had her passing through a clustered gathering of trees. With Reddy leading the charge eagerly ahead, the trio were left to trail along behind them casually, and it wasn't long before she was pulling out her phone-slash-dex again to brush up on not just the information about her pokemon, but also to familiarize herself with the route leading out of the city. If she continued on this way she would eventually come to a place called Pine Town, which seemed to be a town well-known for its mining and the hard-working people that made their living there. There wasn't a gym or anything, so she probably wouldn't spend much time there unless Route 6 wore her out intensely and she had to stop at an inn to rest or something.
She didn't notice the dark clad woman stepping into her path until they'd nearly bumped into each other, at which point the strange girl gave her a smile and looked down at Reddy on the leash. "Cute pokemon. Wanna go a few rounds?"
Reddy immediately chirped and ran forward, leash and all, but Faolan held out a hand to stop him just as Fembra started reeling him in. The girl tossed a pokeball up and down in her hand, eventually releasing a smaller-than-average Pancham that was already squaring up to fight. Faolan looked first at the Pancham, then at Fembra who, despite her timidity, was still quite large and so could easily take the pokemon on, but before she could move ahead to brawl there was a burst of red light and a familiar braying sound rang through the air.
Mudbray, happy to be free of that restricting pokeball, saw the two strangers and immediately sprayed a spew of mud and dirt onto trainer and pokemon, everything it had swallowed down. Although it wasn't dangerous or lethal by any means, the girl was quick to shriek and ran off, the Pancham following at her heels rapidly. Mudbray kicked her leggies out and danced and hopped around excitedly, and brayed obnoxious and loud and exuberant until Faolan returned her to the pokeball.
Well. That was one way to end a battle, she supposed.
Faolan had allowed the Mudbray to roam free a little while longer - she didn't want to run the risk of the girl returning, after all - and once they had walked a few more feet away and the pokemon had eaten her fill of dirt, then did she return her to the pokeball. Reddy was still trotting along happily with mud smeared over his beak, the other end of his leash held securely in Fembra's clawed hands, and for a while all was peaceful.
Until Reddy began to make a chirping, beeping noise to get their attention and strained his leash in the direction of something hanging from a nearby tree branch. It was an odd, yellow creature, and it was gazing at them with a smile on its face and with big, bright eyes of contentment. Faolan stared at it a little bit longer and then, with a gesture for the others to follow, casually walked past the Sunkern to continue on their way.
Eventually, Reddy tired himself out enough the Fembra was dragging him along the path, the bird faceplanted on the gravel path and unmoving as he was pulled along by his leash. Fembra grunted a little with the effort - he was still quite a large bird - but didn't outright ask for help until she spotted a purple, serpentine creature laying flat on a rock, sunning itself. Then did she hurry forward to tug at Faolan's pant leg, getting her attention further with a raspy "Chaaa" and pointing over to where the Ekans laid on the grass. Faolan turned, spotted the unmoving pokemon and saw Reddy laying flat on the dirt. She strode over to the bird and gently nudged him with her foot, then rolled him over to see his beady black eyes staring right at her before he let out a cranky noise and started trying to grab for his pokeball.
Well, at least he was all right. She relinquished the pokeball and drew him back inside, and then turned to Fembra who was still regarding the snake with a suspicious, wary look. They stared at it for a little while longer until Faolan determined it was probably just... taking a nap or something, and after nudging Fembra along the two of them went on down the path, Fembra rolling up the leash as they walked.
Now that it was just Fembra and Faolan, the entire mood of the trip seemed to shift to a different tone. Fembra wasn't overly concerned with watching after Reddy to make sure he wasn't putting this or that in her mouth, and Faolan didn't have to worry herself over Fembra doing the same thing, so she could focus on looking at both the map and the movesets of her current team of pokemon. She'd acquired a decent number of pokemon from both her own efforts and from various gacha machines, and although she had spent a majority of her time traveling since getting to Arciel, she should probably look at taking on the gym challenge sometime soon. She thought she had heard rumors of someone already winning a badge from the Bass City Gym, so clearly there were other competitors out there in the region somewhere.
But Lionel wasn't one of them - at least not yet - so she wasn't particularly concerned. Once she'd established travels between the major cities, and, better yet, gotten a pokemon that was capable of flying between all the different areas, she could likely hit them all back to back. It would take a lot of training, but she was confident that if she put her mind to it she would be able to do it.
Despite Fembra's meaner looking face, she was still as gentle a creature as she had been prior to evolving, and she spent the rest of their time scampering along the path delicately plucking flowers here and there to sniff and or tuck away into the little satchel that she kept Reddy's leash in. She was careful to place them carefully in one of the larger pockets to ensure they didn't get smushed, and even took a moment to wave to a Marshtomp that seemed to be doing the same thing. The Marshtomp gave her an uneasy look before waving back, and, empowered by this, Fembra was quick to scamper to her master's side, a flower clutched carefully in between her claws.
The Marshtomp let them pass by without much incident, and Fembra continued trotting happily along at her master's side, dreams of meeting up with Samson and co spinning around her head - not that Faolan knew that. But secretly Fembra was excited to show her new evolved form to her dear friend, and fretted over whether or not he would be intimidated now that she looked a little bigger, and meaner besides that.
The fire-type was drawn out of her thoughts when she spotted something blue and slightly metallic half-buried in the dirt path up ahead. She scampered forward, momentarily catching Faolan's attention, and using her newly-developed claws began to dig the object out of the dirt with great haste. The great ball was unearthed with her large claws and she carried it over triumphantly to Faolan, who gave the Charmeleon a pat on the head and, after checking to make sure it was empty, tucked it inside her item pouch with the rest of her equipment.
