So much was different about the caves. [break][break] There was no sunlight - he could hardly tell day from night in here, except that the clock on his phone still worked. There was no wifi. Barely any sound, and what color he could see came only from the luminescent moss scattered around the cave, and from his own Aura Sight. All in all, it was a poor substitute for natural light, and between the two sources he could see well enough albeit not perfectly, as he had learned slamming his bike into a wall scarcely ten minutes from when he had first ridden into the Glowworm Caverns. [break][break] He had learned from that, slapped some moss onto the front handles of his bike despite how garish it looked, slowed his pace, stopped every now and again to check the terrain, whether there was any water nearby, the locations of Pokemon that were always farther off than they seemed to be based on how strongly they glowed. [break][break] Hikaru was riding on his shoulders, the Exp. Share that had cost him a small fortune strapped to her head. He had been initially resistant to let her even near the device - knowing her history with uncontrolled electrical shocks - but after she had employed a considerable amount of begging, he had relented. Given that she could barely battle, it would be a reasonable test of the device's intended purpose. It too generated a small amount of light, though he less saw it and more heard the constant buzzing that emanated from the three small bulbs. The rest of his party had been selected with care, leaving aside some of his larger Pokemon like Saber (especially Saber) whom he did not want to release in a too-small chamber and accidentally trigger a cave-in. Among them was a small Eevee egg that he had carefully wrapped in multiple layers of clothing before placing it in his backpack. [break][break] Ride, slow, stop, check. Hearing something unusual, he lifted Hikaru off his shoulders and craned his neck to listen. Was that... running water? [break][break] Party: Toxel (Hikaru, Lv5, 5/5 Energy, Exp. The path grew wider, then narrower, as Kaisei pedaled, until it was small enough that two bicycles heading in opposite directions would have inevitably bumped against each other as they passed. A bright light strung across the pathway caused him to slow, his eyes widening in disbelief as he saw what it was. A string of Tyrogue sat cross-legged across the tunnel, each holding the hands of the ones sitting next to it. Getting closer, he could also see that four of the Tyrogue had a different color of luminescent moss sticking to them in some way, while the center one's head was adorned with a ring of sorts, comprised of a glob matching each of the other four. [break][break] The social dynamics of this particular group of Pokemon did not interest Kaisei in the least. "Move it! You're blocking the road!" [break][break] In unison, each Tyrogue cracked an eye open. [break][break] The one on the far right end was the first to jump to its feet, shouting out a kiai and protectively stepping in front of the center Tyrogue as the other three quickly followed suit. They all struck fighting poses. Kaisei was immediately backpedaling, attempting to get himself out of range of a sudden lunge - or worse, what if they all attempted to attack Hikaru at once? "Go, Haru!" he said, releasing the Charmander from his Pokeball. "Smokescreen!" Haru belched out a cloud of black smoke from his mouth toward the Tyrogue, just as they all attacked at once. Three of four Fake Outs struck home as Haru tried and failed to defend himself, the lizard Pokemon letting out a cry of pain as he lay on the ground. [break][break] "Come on out, everyone!" Kaisei shouted as he released three more Pokemon. "Andy, Shion, defend Haru! Archer, Peck attack from above!" The smoke cloud was starting to dissipate. One of the Tyrogue, the initial trigger-happy one, immediately rushed at the fallen Charmander but was battered back by Andy's claws, the Pawniard unnerving the foe with a Leer before it fell to a combined assault of Archer's Pecks and Shion's Fury Swipes. The three other battling Tyrogue stepped back and joined hands again, Focusing their Energy before Kaisei commanded Haru to launch an Ember into the center of the group. They dispersed, each jumping in a different direction, as the fireball landed harmlessly. [break][break] Anticipating an attack from both the left and the right, Kaisei warned Shion and Andy to be on their guards in the respective directions as Archer continued to be a menace, flying about and dive-bombing whichever Tyrogue got too close to him. When he tried to Peck one standing in the center of the tunnel, it acrobatically vaulted over the Rowlet, before dashing in and slugging Andy with a Mach Punch. That seemed to be the "go" button for the other two, who closed in immediately. Archer wheeled about and Astonished one, stopping it in its tracks with surprise before knocking it out with a flurry of Leafage. But that still left two Tyrogue for Kaisei's remaining Pokemon to worry about. [break][break] Haru swung his tail, letting loose with a barrage of Embers that had both Tyrogue hopping madly on their feet. Luckily for Kaisei the one with Mach Punch proved to be something of a glass cannon, as it collapsed in the face of a simple Mud-Slap from Shion, but not before giving a Helping Hand to the remaining Tyrogue. Andy dashed in the way of a Tackle attack aimed at Haru that did quite a bit more damage than Kaisei expected, judging from the dent marks in the Pawniard's helmet - it seemed that being burned only made the Fighting-type that much more fierce. "Hold your ground, everyone! Haru, Smokescreen again!" With the Tyrogue having been twice blinded, its attacks were much easier to dodge, and between burn damage and the odd Scratch landing it was soon down for the count. [break][break] The only Tyrogue still conscious was huddled up against the wall of the tunnel, looking around at the exhausted forms of its friends like it was about to cry. "You gonna fight me too?" Kaisei asked, but its only response was to whimper and cling more tightly to its own legs. Pathetic, Kaisei thought. Fighting this one would be a waste of his time. He clapped his hands a few times both to congratulate his Pokemon on a job well done and gather their attention, before recalling them into their Pokeballs. [break][break] Hikaru remained on the bicycle seat the whole time. She seemed almost in a trance from the rush of power that had flooded into her head through the Exp. Share. "Good battle, huh?" Kaisei said, grinning. "Soon enough that'll be you, you know. I'm looking forward to seeing your potential." [break][break] Party: Toxel (Hikaru, Lv5>Lv10, 5/5 Energy, Exp. Trying to follow his ears to the sound of water had turned out to be a dud, with all the echoing in these caves. Now Kaisei was lost again, and was trying to use his Aura Sight to guide him in the direction of large groups of Pokemon, hoping that they'd be congregating around a water hole of some sort. He had ridden a good distance before he saw a small blob walking toward him - on closer inspection, it turned out to be an Elekid, which Hikaru waved to happily from the bicycle seat. The Elekid swung her arms around in circles, letting out a burst of electricity and calling back. [break][break] "Is it... saying hello to us?" [break][break] He lifted Hikaru from the seat, and nudged her in the direction of the Pokemon. "Hey, see if you can ask it which way to the nearest water source." [break][break] Hikaru bounded forward, stopping just short of the Elekid, and let out a chattering "Tox-tox?" to which the Elekid responded in its own language. The trainer sat back and watched them converse for a while, until Hikaru playfully nudged the Elekid. The electric plug Pokemon responded by letting loose with a jolt of lightning that zapped Hikaru all over, prompting Kaisei to reach for a Pokeball-- until he realized that the shock hadn't hurt her at all, and she was actually giggling and attempting to nuzzle the Elekid back. They really are just a couple of babies, he thought. He let them play for a while until he heard the sounds of a mother Electabuzz, and the Elekid waved goodbye before sprinting off, resuming vigorously swinging her arms. [break][break] "Hikaru, did you get the directions for me?" Her response was to Nuzzle him. [break][break] Once he had recovered from the unexpected shocking, letting her know very clearly that humans weren't built to enjoy that sort of thing (and in any case he did not permit roughhousing among his Pokemon outside of carefully controlled training environments, they were off on the trail again. Something scraped faintly in the distance, the sound of metal grinding on stone. [break][break] At first Kaisei wondered if it was the bicycle. He tried going faster, going slower, stopping and checking the tires and starting again, but still the sound persisted. A sound ever at the edge of his hearing, quiet, like a wisp in the wind, but persistent. [break][break] Am I hearing things? he thought. Caves could mess with your senses, the sounds of distant activity ping-ponging off the walls until you were never sure quite where any sound was coming from. He stopped the bike, heard it again, and scowled under his breath. Hikaru let out a whine at the constant stop and go. "You might be right, Hikaru. Maybe I am just... hearing things?" A tinny, scrape-scrape-scrape was drifting into his ears now, and it sounded a lot closer. Maybe that was what he had been hearing all along? With his eyes, he could see what looked like a Pokeball, half submerged in the dirt. But his Aura senses told a different story. Dirt was generally not surrounded by aura, in the shape of a large pancake, topped with a glowing ring of teeth. [break][break] "Haru, get ready!" he said, releasing the Charmander in a flash of light. "Use Ember attack!" The lizard Pokemon released a spurt of flames that ignited the metal Pokemon's body, causing it to let out an angry burbling noise before it released a Mud Shot that splattered all over the hapless lizard. "Okay, change of plan... Return! Shion, you're up! Mud-Slap!" [break][break] The Stunfisk was slow to react, having lost track of its original target (and being slow in general), but after two Mud-Slaps it got the message. Its entire body glowing gold, it flipped up onto one of its fins so its body was positioned vertically, and tried to snap the metal spikes lining its body around Shion in an act of Revenge. The mole Pokemon panicked, arms pressed against the spikes as he frantically tried to prevent himself from being clamped down on, his little legs kicking away at the dirt hurling glob after glob of mud at the oppressively large foe. Finally the Stunfisk relented and both Pokemon fell back onto the dirt, exhausted, though Shion was thankfully able to pull himself to his feet after a short while. [break][break] Kaisei breathed a sigh of relief. That had been a rough fight, and he congratulated Shion for pulling through it. He was about to return the Drilbur when-- [break][break] scrape scrape scrape [break][break] "What the fuck?" [break][break] He lifted Shion into the front basket of his bicycle. "Let's get the hell away from here." [break][break] He rode at a sprint, not really noticing what direction he was going in, just wanting to get away from that Arceus-Damned noise. At last it was replaced--by the sound of rushing water! And the smell, and the sight. They had finally located the water source he had been searching for. "Take a rest, guys," he said, propping up the bike on its kickstand. He unscrewed the lid on his water bottle and went to refill it when-- [break][break] SPLASH! [break][break] "Shion!" Kaisei gasped as an even larger Galarian Stunfisk leaped out of the underground river, firing a Water Gun from its mouth which nailed the Drilbur against the wall before he even had time to react. "Rrgh... Go, Archer! Fly up and use Leafage!" The small owl Pokemon did so, harassing the Stunfisk with a tornado of glowing green leaves before it dove underwater to escape. "Follow up with Shadow Sneak!" An owl-shaped shadow extended down over the water and... Kaisei wasn't quite sure what it did, but in any case it seemed to make the Stunfisk angry. Glowing with an orange aura, it leapt up angrily at the Rowlet, who took a glancing blow to the wing as he tried to dodge - Kaisei could see that even with the Fighting-type attack being resisted, it still did an oppressively high of damage. [break][break] Archer couldn't take much more of this, so there was only one thing to do. He pulled a Great Ball from his bag, and crossed his fingers. The Great Ball wiggled once... wiggled twice... violently thrashed a third time... and lay still. [break][break] "Welcome to the team, uh... Yasushi," he said, clipping the Great Ball to his belt while removing Shion's. The poor mole had fainted, and as such was no longer able to continue on their journey. He returned the Drilbur and let the Pokeball transport itself to the PC, then looked back at the water. On second thought... perhaps he didn't want to drink it after all. [break][break] He followed the underground stream for a while until he came up to a small waterfall spilling out of a crack in the earth. Crisp and clear, and as filtered as it was going to get. He refilled his bottles and was about to take a swig when the last thing he expected to hear assaulted his ears again. [break][break] scrape [break][break] Kaisei angrily bounced Yasushi's Pokeball off the ground, and bent down to glare at the flatfish when it emerged. "What the actual fuck is your problem? I beat you! I caught you! Give me a fucking break! Do you think this is funny, because it's not--" [break][break] The Stunfisk was frantically shaking his head back and forth, then backing into a corner. Was he afraid of Kaisei? Or...? [break][break] SCREEEEECH! [break][break] He clapped his hands against his ears as a Metal Sound rocked through the vicinity, and when he turned around, the biggest Stunfisk he had ever seen was in front of him, pinning him between the wall and the river by cutting off his only route of escape. At once he understood. A trap! It had been-- stalking him, ever forward, the two smaller ones positioned to distract him or lure him into the position of ambush. And he had been dumb enough to not even realize it was happening. Hikaru leaned over the bike to have a few choice words with the Stunfisk, but he held her back. She couldn't do anything to that thing, anyway. Sighing, Kaisei turned to Yasushi. "I know we haven't met under the best of circumstances. But there's no way we're beating that thing unless we work together. You with me?" He was briefly worried the Pokemon might say no, go back to his old boss, when the Stunfisk banged his head up and down on the dirt. Perhaps he had a bone to pick with the larger 'mon. Or perhaps he just didn't see another choice. [break][break] You push a man into a corner, you better expect him to hold nothing back. [break][break] "Mud Shot!" [break][break] The surprise shower of gunk landed on the huge Stunfisk, causing it to flail about, but after the initial shock of being attacked it seemed unperturbed. It opened its Pokeball-shaped jaws wide in a Yawn, flexed the bear-trap-looking spines on its back a little too. To Kaisei that seemed like an invitation for a mouthful of Mud Shot, but after the attack, he noticed that Yasushi had gotten drowsy... and had even fallen asleep on the spot! He quickly returned the fish and sent out Haru. "We just need to buy time. Ember attack!" He wasn't even going to bother with the smokescreens, seeing as they were hardly in a position to move. The Charmander added a succession of scorch marks to the massive Stunfisk's damage count, but it quickly took its Revenge, sliding along the ground with surprising ferocity and knocking Haru against the wall, unconscious. Looking at the state of the rest of his team - one of them was even an egg, which by definition couldn't fight at all - Kaisei decided his best option was to send out Yasushi again. And yell at the fish to wake up. [break][break] Fortunately for him, the Stunfisk boss did not have Mud Shot, and its Astonish had so little effect that Kaisei's Pokemon slept right through it (which bode poorly, in hindsight). Again the huge Stunfisk launched a Revenge attack. However, given that its opponent had been sleeping for a while, the power of its vengeance was greatly diminished - it only served to wake up Yasushi, who immediately sought his own Revenge, smacking the foe away with a full-body spinning slam as his aura flared up on full display. Once he was certain he could no longer hear the boss moving, Kaisei walked over to it. It had swirls in its eyes. [break][break] Impaled on one of the boss's spikes was the leaf of a Leppa Berry. Kaisei was pleased to see that it hadn't been damaged in the fight. Even though the boss had fainted, he was still a bit apprehensive about touching it - so he pulled his fishing rod out of his pack, set the smallest hook he had, and carefully maneuvered the line until he could scoop the berry up by the leaves without damaging the fruit itself. He tossed it in his pack with the other berries. Definitely one for the farm, once he made it out of these caves. [break][break] After dealing with the Stunfisk, he walked back over to his bicycle and his Pokemon. "You did your best, Haru. Have a rest," he said, returning the fainted Pokemon. "As for you two... what do you say we go fishing?" He indicated the rod with a grin. He wheeled the bicycle down the river, Hikaru and Yasushi slowly following along behind and taking a moment to rest, relax, and breathe for a while. [break][break] "Ohh!" Surprised expressions were on the faces of the two surface-dwellers as the river widened into an underground pool, the water seeming to sparkle. Down in the depths, Kaisei could see the faint blue outlines of water-dwelling Pokemon as they swam around. They wouldn't bite without bait, though. He could hardly spare the one Leppa Berry, but he had plenty of Pinap, so he hooked one of the yellow berries onto the end of the rod before standing at the edge of the pond and casting it into the water. Hikaru watched from her seat with starry eyes. [break][break] Party: Toxel (Hikaru, Lv13, 5/5 Energy, Exp. Something down in the depths clamped onto the end of the hook. Kaisei started yanking upwards, meeting a noticeable amount of resistance. The line strained... Kaisei tugged... and the fish Pokemon came flying out of the water, dislodged, and landed on the cave floor by the swinging motion of the rod and line... [break][break] "KARP KARP KARP!" [break][break] It was a stupid Magikarp. This was his great catch? He glared at the rod. He had bought the thing from a top-quality reel shop! Perhaps it was the bait? Or that this cave was just a bad place to fish to begin with... but the water looked so nice. He sighed, deciding to make the most of it, and sent out Andy. [break][break] The Pawniard was rather perturbed by having this unremarkable of an opponent to fight, but he resolved to make it a glorious victory nonetheless. He started out by Leering at the foe as the Magikarp simply Splashed up and down in place. On Kaisei's command, Andy followed up with a Fury Cutter, which was met by a rather ineffectual Tackle from the Magikarp. Despite its considerable experience advantage, it was still just a Magikarp, and scales bounced off solid steel. A succession of Fury Cutters followed as the soldier Pokemon chased the fish around the cave, and when the heavily weakened Magikarp attempted to Flail about in a last-ditch attempt to defeat the foe, it was easily sidestepped. One last Fury Cutter punted the Magikarp back into the lake, where it bobbed to the surface and drifted off. [break][break] After the battle, Kaisei had lunch. He boiled some of the lake water to make his instant ramen, and upon seeing Hikaru sniffing at the food, it occurred to him to set out some Pokemon chow for his team as well. Andy, Archer, Hikaru, and even Yasushi were all given their proportional shares. Kaisei let out Haru as well - the Charmander still fainted from the previous boss battle - and slipped a Revive into his mouth. Haru slowly blinked his eyes open as the medicine took effect. "Welcome back, Haru," Kaisei said, lifting and carrying him over to the rest of the Pokemon. Haru startled a bit at Yasushi, but calmed down after the Stunfisk explained that he was now a friend. [break][break] After each of the party had eaten their fill, Kaisei returned his Pokemon again, save for Haru and Hikaru, whom he lifted into the bicycle's baskets. He took off at a brisk pace. They had taken their fair share of diversions already, and he was eager to see the light at the end of this tunnel. [break][break] Party: Toxel (Hikaru, Lv13>15, 5/5 Energy, Exp. Ahead of him, something was flapping erratically through the air. Some sort of bat Pokemon, he presumed, but its movements were too wild, too jerky to be normal hunting behavior. Perhaps it was injured? He pedaled forward for a closer look. The bat-creature let out a scream and took a sudden dive, narrowly missing Kaisei as he ducked to avoid its swoop. The creature clamped onto a nearby wall and now Kaisei could see that it was a Gligar. It looked terrified. [break][break] A singsong voice caught his ears, and he turned toward the sound to see a round pink Pokemon - an Igglybuff. Was it trying to fight the Gligar? As it came closer, he realized the expression on its face wasn't hostile, but rather... something else. The Igglybuff tapped her hand to her lips, and blew a profusion of pink hearts in the Gligar's direction. The flying scorpion screamed and dropped down to the ground, clinging to the wheel of Kaisei's bicycle. [break][break] Kaisei waved an arm through the hearts in front of his face, and they popped on contact, the fairy energy dissipating. [break][break] This drew the Igglybuff's attention. She pointed an arm at Kaisei, shouting something in a high-pitched voice. Apparently whatever it was had the effect of riling up Hikaru, who leaned forward from her position in the basket, shouting something back. Kaisei turned to the Gligar and said, "Hey, now's your chance to escape, right?" but it shook its head, clinging to the wheel and pleading with Kaisei in its own language. [break][break] "All right, I get it." The Gligar wasn't going to let go until Kaisei dealt with the problem, evidently. "Haru, you're up!" By this time the two babies had escalated to a full-on shouting match. The Charmander was feeling much better from the medicine and stepped forward to square off against his opponent. The Igglybuff started to Sing, but Kaisei quickly drowned her out by calling for a Dragon Breath attack. A bright blue beam of energy shot out from Haru's mouth and nailed the Igglybuff square in the face, causing her to bounce backward. [break][break] There was no chance of her closing the distance to actually deal damage to Haru. When she tried a Sweet Kiss again, the Charmander countered with Smokescreen. Under cover of the screen, she tried running forward, but her little feet could only carry her so fast, and before she could get in range to Pound the lizard she was blasted back by another Dragon Breath attack. The Igglybuff's rear end bounced on cold stone again, and she started crying. "Finish it with one more Dragon Breath," Kaisei said, but as Haru began gathering energy in his mouth, the Gligar swooped in between them, frantically shaking his head. [break][break] "Are you serious?" Kaisei said. "You know she's never going to stop chasing you if you just let her go, right?" [break][break] The Gligar looked down at the ground, fidgeting with his claws, then over to the weakened Igglybuff, somewhat shamefacedly. [break][break] "Unless..." Kaisei walked up to the batlike Pokemon and held out a Pokeball. "If you come with me, you can leave this cave, travel far away from here, somewhere she won't be able to find you. She can find someone else to bother and I'll train you up to be strong, so you won't have to be afraid of her ever again. What do you say?" The Gligar was hesitant to go off with Kaisei. He understood that being caught by a trainer - particularly the kind of trainer this man seemed to be - meant that you sometimes had to fight, and he hated fighting. He also hated the thought of never being able to return home. Still, no matter how hard he tried, he hadn't been able to shake this Igglybuff, madly in love with him but she was just a baby... and, well, being caught by a trainer was a convenient excuse. Besides the man had already done him a kindness by sparing Igglybuff from any further punishment. So he went into the ball. [break][break] Soshi, as Kaisei named him, proved to be a great asset in navigating the caves, as he knew the area well, and Kaisei was keen on steering away from any potentially hazardous encounters. They made good time, heading east, until at last Kaisei could see a different kind of light - sunlight - ahead of him. He pedaled onward, forcing Soshi to strain to keep up, and made his way outside the caverns and into the bright light. [break][break] An endless overpass stretched before him. Not a city, or even a small town, but a rough, rugged landscape that he was sure would damage his bicycle sooner or later if he tried crossing it. His curses echoed through the sky. [break][break] Then they turned back. [break][break] Party: Toxel (Hikaru, Lv16, 5/5 Energy, Exp. On and on through the darkness, they rode back. Kaisei could hear Hikaru starting to get antsy. Was she thirsty? He offered her some water and she turned it down. "I can't make you any smoothies now, okay?" he said, crossing his arms at her. They engaged in a stare-off for a while until Kaisei gave up and took a long swig of water himself. [break][break] Up ahead in the darkness was a large blue blob of aura. A person? he thought. He hadn't seen another person in who knows how long. It stood up and stretched. Definitely person-sized, and roughly the right shape as well. It has to be a person. He pushed his bike forward and pedaled toward the figure, calling out to them as they approached. [break][break] The person paid him no heed, but simply sat back down. As Kaisei got within a few feet he could see, to his shock, that it was not a person at all. It was an enormous Abra, perhaps Kaisei's height or maybe a smidgen smaller, floating mere inches above an elevated slab of rock. It seemed to be meditating. [break][break] The Abra cracked one eye open. It seemed unhappy to be disturbed. [break][break] Kaisei didn't hesitate. He reached into his bag, pulled out a Quick Ball which he had just so happened to have purchased from the Pokemart for a time like this, and lobbed it at the Abra before it could Teleport away. He had managed to capture the Abra before it escaped -- a stroke of luck to be proud of. Perhaps his good fortune would continue as he remounted his bicycle and set off again. "Soshi, find me a river," he said to the Gligar. The fly scorpion did, directing him to a narrow, fast-flowing channel. When Kaisei reached in with his hand, he discovered it was cold as ice and abundant with fish swimming below. It seemed like a good enough place to set up camp for a while, and try his hand at fishing again.
