Fayne told herself to wait 24 hours before returning to the lab. She didn't want to appear overeager, especially after she'd been caught prying on Professor Holly's research notes by the woman herself. It was embarrassing, and anyone else may have made it their mission to never return, too driven by shame to look the professor or her assistants in the eyes ever again. But not Fayne. She wanted to make things right, and with any luck, she hoped to learn a thing or two about how official research was conducted. Beaker washing was lackey work, but anything that put Fayne in a real laboratory made her happy, so she wasn't about to complain. It helped that Professor Holly had even given her verbal permission to return. It felt like a blessing, in a strange way, merely because Fayne looked up to the professor with admiration.
As the young petrologist entered the lab, she lowered her umbrella and shook off the droplets just outside the doorway before closing it and stepping inside the building entirely. Normally, Fayne would have braved such mild rain without so much as a raincoat, but since Molokai entered her life, she'd been much more cautious about wet weather. She probably should've put the bearded-dragon-sized Charmander in his Pokeball, but he was small enough to ride on her shoulder with little to no problem. And it was nice to have the company. Not to mention the fact that Fayne wanted Molokai to be out of his ball when they revisited the place he'd spent his entire life. Seeing such familiar faces would do him good, Fayne thought. Who knew, maybe some of the researchers would even remember him and give him some love, not that he was lacking any affection after joining Fayne.
Molokai let out a squeak of relief when the lab door finally closed, glad to be out of such humidity. Fayne, on the other hand, walked directly to an assistant who appeared to be impatiently waiting for something or someone. "Hello," she said with a slight wave of her hand. "Oh! You must be Unica Scarlett," the man in the white coat said. "We were expecting you--"
Fayne shook her head. "No. Sorry." She pointed up to the orange lizard on her shoulder. "I already have my starter." The man looked ashamed but was quick to collect himself. "I'm actually here about the beaker washing job..?" The man perked up and smiled.
With that, he escorted Fayne and Molokai to a back room that contained stacks upon stacks of soiled beakers. While some did appear to be spotless and clean, the assistant assured Fayne that they all needed cleaning. He pulled out some sterilized lab gear, goggles and gloves included, before giving her a brief explanation of how to clean the beakers. He was in a hurry to get back to the lobby of the lab, as was obvious by how quickly he went over the different soaps, sponges, and brushes at Fayne's disposal. Without giving her time to ask any follow-up questions, he disappeared down a hallway and the duo were left alone.
Molokai leaped off his trainer's shoulder and landed atop the eye-wash station, silently and curiously watching Fayne as she glanced around at the stacks of beakers, bewilderment clear on her face. In complete silence, she grabbed a beaker off the top of a stack and eyed the different colored soaps. "I think... this one?" she muttered aloud as she popped off the cap and squirted some liquid detergent inside the glass container. Grabbing a well-worn sponge, Fayne got to work scrubbing the inside of the beaker.
The soap makes things a lot slipperier than you expect, and without snagging any gloves, you have less grip. That beaker starts to slide dangerously downwards.

Fayne shot a grin at Molokai when the suds began to wash away the lavender-colored stains from the glass. And yet, as soon as her gaze landed on her starter, she noticed that something was terribly wrong. His eyes were wide, he stood at the end of the metallic bowl with his tiny hands perched on the rim, and he let out a panicked snarl. Confused, Fayne looked back at her hands to see what the problem was. It was then that she noticed how the beaker was slipping out of her grasp! She gasped and fumbled with the glass for a long moment before gently placing it on a nearby counter to avoid any more near-accidents.
"I thought gloves were supposed to help with--" Fayne cut herself short as she stared at her soapy hands and wiggled her fingers. "Oh," she muttered, instantly realizing that although the assistant had given her gloves and goggles, she had neglected to put them on before starting. "Don't mention this to anyone," Fayne said to Molokai as she turned away from the table and rinsed the soap off her hands in a nearby sink. "My first time in a real lab, and I make a rookie mistake like that." She shook her head in disappointment and got to work putting on the protective gear. Gloves, check. Goggle, check. She even fiddled with the clips in her hair to make sure they would keep any loose strands out of her face.
Feeling a new sense of confidence in herself, Fayne turned back to Molokai and gave him a smile and a thumbs-up. He nodded and squeaked with approval before settling back into the eye-wash bowl. "Okay, let's try that again," she said. Cautiously, she grabbed the still-sudsy beaker and continued scrubbing it with the same detergent and sponge as before. She finished cleaning it, rinsed off the soap with water from the sink, and dried it with a towel she thought the assistant had said was used for just such a purpose. With that, she slid the beaker onto a shelf and returned to the stacks of dirty glassware. "One down, tons to go," Fayne announced while grabbing hold on another beaker and getting to work cleaning it.

Fayne inspected the inside of the beaker to discover a thick layer of dried slime that offended her nostrils the moment she turned the opening toward her face to get a better look. With a gag, she turned her head away and extended her arm to keep the stench as far away from her nose as possible. Once she managed to compose herself, she took a hearty breath, held it, and turned back to the beaker in her hand. She tilted the container this way and that in an attempt to figure out exactly what was stuck inside, for if she knew that then she'd have a better chance figuring out how to clean it out. The color was off-putting and the odor was unlike anything she'd smelled before. Was this some kind of Muk essence or something?
Whatever it was, Fayne would have to work hard to clean it out. She started with standard soap and water, but that only helped so much. Without a word. she placed the dirty beaker in the sink and let it it soak in sudsy water for a bit while she searched for something that could get the job done. Her pink eyes scanned the various soap and detergent bottles, but none said anything about cleaning dried slime from a beaker. Instead, she grabbed one that was labelled "heavy-duty" and continued scouring the supplies. There were many items, but only a handful seemed of use to Fayne in this particular moment. She grabbed a glass-washer brush, which reminded her of an over-sized mascara wand, and a wire scrub brush, which resembled a toothbrush in every way except for what the bristles were made from.
These would do nicely, Fayne thought. She returned to the beaker, placed the three new items on the counter, and held her breath as she dumped the stagnant water out of the glassware. She squirted some "heavy-dury" liquid soap into the beaker and got to work cleaning out the muck with the wire scrub brush.

The gunk eventually gave way and began to flake off the more Fayne scrubbed. It slipped down the sink drain -- something that probably wasn't the best for the environment -- and disappeared from sight, taking the awful stench with it. Even though the glassware now looked and smelled clean, Fayne made a point to rinse it off and rewash it all over again, just to be sure. After drying the container, she slipped it into a cabinet alongside beakers of a similar shape and size.
"So far, so good," the young researcher said as she turned around and spotted Molokai, who was watching her with half-closed eyes. It looked like he was growing bored and had chosen to doze off instead of helping or getting into trouble. Fayne was grateful for that. It meant that he wasn't in the way and she didn't have to punish him by putting him in his ball. "Alright. Good talk," Fayne said after a long moment of silence, sarcasm dripping off each word. She turned back to the dirty beakers, grabbed one, and carefully inspected it for any more unexpected gunk or mysterious fluids left to sit stagnant at the bottle of the glass. She wanted to be extra cautious moving forward with her cleaning duty.

There seems to be a little green ring around the bottom of the beaker, but as you pour soap into it, it comes off easily enough! The next two beakers are the same except with different colors. It seems whatever was in them was water soluble.

Fayne had finally hit her stride, or so it seemed. She was running into fewer and fewer problems the more she cleaned, and before she knew it, she'd managed to get through a whole stack without having to stop to put on more protective gear or gather different cleaning supplies. Although this beaker-washing gig wasn't as scientifically demanding as she had hoped for, it was a good learning experience all the same; namely, she learned how to clean different sized beakers. So maybe it wasn't a very interesting or important learning experience, but it was one all the same. In truth, just being able to be in a laboratory for such an extended period of time was something of a blessing to Fayne.
She was able to overhear bits of conversations from assistants passing by the open doorway, muttering something about "behavioral studies" and "negative exercises." Curious to hear more, Fayne would lean against the doorway while absentmindedly drying a glass or scratching Molokai's head while he slept. When they were out of earshot, she'd return to her job. After finishing one stack of beakers, Fayne considered calling it a day. She'd made a noticeable dent in the number of dirty dishes, but that wasn't enough. She wanted to make a lasting impression with the workers at the lab. She wanted to do a good-- no, a great job! With a determined nod, she grabbed a beaker off the top of another stack.

As you grab from another stack, your hand slips... or rather brushes up against the glass the wrong way... and it falls. You scramble to grab it only for it to slip up again and knock over another and somehow even more glasses... and now they all went spilling to the floor and shattering to pieces.

This beaker washing job was tedious, but that was the life of anyone who was just starting out. Repetitive, unexciting grunt work. Fayne just had to tell herself that it would be well worth it in the end, and it wasn't a terribly difficult task either. As she retrieved another beaker from the stack of dirty dishes, Fayne began to wonder if it would be alright for her to put in some headphones and listen to music while she worked. That thought was cut short as the beaker in her hands caught the rim of the beaker directly below it and caused the entire stack to start leaning. There was no time to think about what to do, so Fayne did the first thing that popped into her head: drop the beaker in her hand and reach out to stop the tower from falling. She managed to place her palms against the sides of the glassware for a millisecond before the sound of glass shattering caused her to recoil and look between her feet where the beaker that she had initially grabbed was smashed to pieces.
Horrified at this, Fayne let go of the stack, which unfortunately caused more destruction as the unstable glassware toppled over, sending the beakers shattering against the floor. Molokai squeaked with alarm, but his trainer was far too distracted to may him any mind. Fayne tried to grab some of the beakers that were in mid-flight, but that only caused things to go from bad to worse. Because she had chosen to rooted where she was -- for fear of glass penetrating the soles of her boots and cutting up her feet -- she was only barely able to reach the glasses that were now falling away from her. Her fingertips brushed against one of the falling beakers, changing its trajectory in the air and sending it into another stack of beakers.
With one stack falling, another leaning, and a third starting to give way, Fayne's fight-or-flight instincts kicked in. Adrenaline pumped through her veins and her heartbeat pounded loudly in her ears. Leaving the lab now to avoid punishment was out of the question, and so too was standing still any longer. She needed to act fast. Seemingly no longer concerned about getting glass wedged in her shoes, Fayne launched herself forward, the crystalline shards crunching under her weight. As her gloved hands came in contact with the two leaning stacks, one final beaker shattered against the ground with a thunderous crash. She winced and the room fell silent. Exhaling a slow, shaky breath, the young geologist glanced back at where she had been standing when the chaos all started.
Only two dirty beakers from the initial stack remained undamaged on the counter. The floor, however, looked like a danger-zone. Shards of varying sizes littered the ground; droplets of mysterious, multi-colored liquid pooled together under the ruins; and approaching from the eye-wash station was a tiny, orange lizard. Fayne's attention snapped to Molokai the moment she spotted him in her peripheral. "Stay back," she barked, a quiver apparent in her voice as she gave the order. She was frazzled and she just needed a minute to think. She eyed the doorway to see if anyone had arrived as a result of the ruckus, but no one was there... not yet, at least. Silently, Fayne looked back at the two stacks of beakers that her hands were still gently propped against. She slowly retracted her hands and fidgeted with the glassware for a moment to make sure they were stable before turning back to the mess on the floor.
She'd be lucky if she wasn't kicked out on the spot and told to never return again. With a sigh of frustration and defeat, Fayne pulled off one rubber glove and pinched the bridge of her nose. If she was a more sensitive individual, she might have started crying, but she was honestly more annoyed than upset with herself. After composing herself, Fayne took off the other glove and her goggles, placed them on an empty counter space, and got to work hunting down a mop and bucket. Sure enough, there were some available to her in a closet, alongside a broom and dustpan. That helped spare her from the humiliation of having to talk to staff... even though she knew they'd find out eventually. With one eye on the doorway, Fayne got to work sweeping up the glass, mopping the questionable liquid, and picking out the shards from her boots.

It took a decent amount of time to completely clean up the mess, but Fayne was ultimately successful in her endeavor. No injuries were sustained, no negative chemical reactions ensued, and no scolding befell the young researcher. While one of the lab technicians did pop their head in, it was only to make sure no one was hurt. Fayne offered a shy smile and a small wave, but no words were exchanged between the two of them. Did this sort of thing happen often? Probably; why else wouldn't she have gotten in trouble for breaking so many beakers? Then again, beakers were considerably cheaper than other, more professional lab equipment. It wasn't like she broke a distillation kit or biological microscope. Those things were expensive. Beakers could be easily replaced.
Though Fayne breathed a sigh of relief when she had finished cleaning, Molokai was still on edge. He crawled onto a nearby countertop and let out a chirp of concern. He had stayed out of the way, as his trainer had ordered, but his tiny heart was still racing. Fayne turned her attention to the small Charmander and gave him a gentle pat on his head. "I know you want us to get out of here, but we can't leave now. Not like this," she said while turning back to the two beakers that remained standing. They were the only survivors of the stack that had fallen to the floor. "Let me finish these two then we can go." Molokai snarled and Fayne turned back to him. "I won't touch anything else. Just those two beakers."
The tiny Charmander still seemed anxious about the idea of her staying longer than necessary, for he began to pace back and forth across the countertop. "C'mon, Molokai. I can't leave on such a bad note. Cleaning those last two will help me feel better," she insisted. Though her starter was clearly in distress, Fayne had nothing more to say on the matter. She slipped on her gloves and goggles, returned to the two unclean beakers, and got to work scrubbing them out.
Nothing even exploded or broke this time! That's as much of a win as you could ask for, really. Maybe your superior beaker-washing skills will win your poor, nervous Charmander over.

His large blue eyes remained locked on his trainer as she went to one of the cabinets and slipped the now-clean beaker on the shelf beside its kin. "Easy peasy," she chimed, trying her best to keep her voice light and airy to give off a feeling of composure and tranquility. Molokai did not react to her words; he merely kept a close eye on Fayne. She glanced at the starter to make sure he was still there, patted his head as she walked by, and got to work on the last beaker. Molokai breathed a sigh of relief when Fayne washed, dried, and put away the last beaker without any chaos ensuing. He snarled and spit an ember from his mouth as he scolded his trainer for risking injury by staying at the lab any longer than necessary. Though the ember was extinguished long before it reached the tile floor, his frustration and anxiety was made apparent by the act. Fayne mimicked the noise Molokai had made by snorting and pretending to spit with a "puh-too." The Charmander chirped in amusement at this, and Fayne couldn't help smiling. "We're okay now," she reassured while holding out her hand, palm-up. The orange lizard gave a high-pitched growl and scampered up her arm before resting on her shoulder. As if out of instinct, he swished his tail away from the back of her neck and kept it aloft to ensure her hair and clothes wouldn't catch fire. As Molokai got settled, Fayne removed the gloves and goggles, placed them on the counter where her starter had been standing, and headed to the open doorway. "Good work, buddy," she said, eliciting a beastly laugh from the Charmander who was well aware of the fact that he didn't deserve the praise. "Now let's get out of here."
