"PIII!"
A shrill shriek broke the air and suddenly a brown and tan streak went whooshing by Bri's head. She threw a arm over her head and ducked, too late to do any good but it was better than nothing right?
She caught sight of a pair of short stubby wings ahead as the dive bomber turned in the sky to align a blunt beak opened in a scream.
"Oh come on-"
"Piii! Piii!"
The form swept toward her again and she flung her self out of the way-

"Ow!" The bird's aim was better than her reaction and his body crashed against her arm and shoulder, flinging her arm wide and tossing her back whle her bag went sliding off her arm. A small pink and tan cat went sailing through the air along with the apricorn she had picked up earlier.
"Skii!" Jack twisted in midair and somehow, despite the fact his head was way out of proportion with the rest of his body he managed to land on his feet. His front legs bent, and he stuck his butt up in the air with his tail stiff behind him as he hissed at the bird in the air. How dare he! They had been about to do the very important task of picking a name for one of his new friends!
"Rude!" He shrieked at the dark shape in the sky. The Pidgey ignored him and landed on the apricorn, one clawed foot placed possessively over the slightly squished produce.
"This is mine." He said firmly and fluffed his feathers up to look bigger.
That was overkill in Bri's opinion. Even without the obvious threat/defense display this bird looked strong. Maybe it would be better to not take this fight, maybe it would be better to let the apricorn go.
Isaac's smug face popped up in her mind as she imagined telling him as she got scared off by a Pidgey and YEP! That was not happening!
"Jack Fake Out!" With a Very Impressive (read: tiny and adorable) roar Jack lunged toward the Pidgey. The bird neatly side-stepped out of Jack's reach and retaliated with a flap of his wings that sent a gust of wind against the cat's side. Jack went sprawling, very predictably yelling about cheaters and how using special attacks were cheating (because he couldn't use them).
Bri sucked in a deep breath then let it out slowly. The small amount of time after a successful flinch paired nicely with a stat-reducer but Skitt-Jack was currently recovering from a gust and lunging forward in a Tackle.
She really needed to pencil a training session to improve his range of moves into her schedule.
"Back on task," She whispered to herself as Jack's Tackle was met with an answering one. She winced as the two seperated; they'd both taken damage but Jack had come off worse. "Don't get discouraged! Dodge!"
This fight couldn't be carried by Jack alone and the rest of her team was new. Really, really new. She picked up her bag and pulled a pokeball to toss it forward.

"Go! Blissey!" She regretted that they hadn't found a name for the big pink pokemon yet buuut that could be dealt with later!
The flash of red light momentarily distracted both the Pidgey and Jack from their fight. It shifted and swirled and took form and Jack sucker punched the Pidgey.
With his body.
"Rude me?! No rude you!" The bird squawked as he went tumbling across the ground. The apricorn was spent bouncing away and now he fluffed up his feathers and watched the two carefully with his eyes narrowed and attentive. "Using the wind is not as cheating as two against one!"
"Nice move! Jack, keep laying on the damage!" Jack was spared the strain of coming up with a reason why this wasn't cheating by Brianna's words. He threw himself forward fearlessly in another Tackle. The bird moved a split second after Jack did in a perfect copy of his movements, at least as close a copy as the bird could manage.
"What was tha-doesn't matter! Blissey, support him with Growl and Tail Whip!"
"Of-of course!" She had only just joined the team but she was helping! She was so excited~ oooh~! She was going to be part of a team, it was going to be great! She lifted her arms and flicked her frills at their opponent, drawing his eyes and attention and lowering his defense through distraction.
"That, that won't work!" He called, stumbling as he failed to dodge another hit from Jack. He was impressed by the Skitty's continued determination. Even though the difference in strength was obvious between the two he just wasn't giving up.
It would be better if he drug this fight out, so the younger one could learn. He would get his apricorn, but he could spare a little time to show these two how to fight.
He pushed into the air for the first time this fight -no sense sticking to the ground when the apricorn he was holding was gone- to whirl toward the Blissey and send a blast of loosely directed air in her direction. See the power of something non-physical! You don't always have to bodily throw yourself at a foe!
Jack wasn't having it. Not the unsaid lesson, not the fact that The Bird was clearly ignoring him, and definately not the fact that The Bird was trying to keep out of his reach!
"Get back down here!" He yowled as he crouched low to the ground, all of his muscles tensed in preparation. He could do this,The Bird wasn't even that high and he wasn't really moving and it would be fine! Brianna was moving in his peripheral vision but he didn't need her help! Something flew from her hand right as he started to leap and he howled in fury as the white sphere hit against The Bird and sucked the feathery fiend into the ball away from his righteous fury! He landed on his feet in the trampled grass where the bird had been and immediately spun around to yell at Bri. Couldn't she see he had been about to unleash his fury? Couldn't she see he had been about to win?! Wasn't that what she wanted!? Premier ball used + 10% Capture Bonus

"Yes! Wait what am I going to do with a second pidgey?" Brianna's enthusiasm was cut short by the thought. There wasn't anything stopping her from having multiples of the same pokemon but it still seemed a little wasteful.
"Skiii!" Jack's enthusiasm for repeatedly ramming into the pokeball hadn't abated at all. His trainer shared a look with the Blissey as he knocked the pokeball around the area, his angry crys tiny and adorable but also very annoying.
"Okay! That's enough of that." She swooped to snag the premier ball when it rolled by her foot and hurridly stuffed it into her bag while ignoring Jack's angry but tired yelling. She put her hands on her hips and stared back at him as he put his front feet on her shins and yelled.
"The bird's in the ball and its staying that way until future notice." Predictably that answer only made the tiny cat angrier. His cries of rage and anger were tinged with a not she recognized very well; this little kitty was tired. She smiled wrly and pulled out his pokeball. He was still a kitten after all. "We'll just talk this out later, 'kay?"
A flash of red light left only the young woman and the nervous pink pokemon that was standing a little distance for her, paws clasped in front of her as she waited.
"Bli?"
"He needs a rest." Brianna explained as she tucked the pokeball into her bag, she grinned as it nestled next to the premier ball that had caused such an issue. With a sight the trainer straightened up and double checked she had the apricorn that had caused the mess in the first place. "Are you up for walking with me for a while?"
"Bliii!!"
"Alright, happy to have you along." With a rueful rub at her bruised shoulder she started off with the Blissey at her side.

"You did a good job supporting earlier." Brianna said to her current travelling companion as she folded her arms behind her head and hummed thoughtfully. Some people were not satsified playing a 'background' role, she herself struggled with this even when she knew how important it was. If the Blissey was the same way then it would be best to manage expectations right up front. Or something. "That won't be the only role you play on my team, but even when you do I want you to know it's an important one."
"Blii?" A polite but confused enquiry.
"Yeah you." She turned her head to flash a reassuring smile at the pink pokemon. The two of them were keeping a steady pace on the path which provided a sharp divide between a field on one side the forest on the other. The air was warming as the sun rose, even behind the thick layer of clouds in the sky. Bri turned her gaze back to the path and stepped over a sizeable branch.
"You might be supporting sometimes but you'll be doing other things as well. We'll need good support with what I'm planning." She sighed and dropped her arms to stuff her hands into her pockets. "I want to prove to someone I can do things my way, and I want to make a name for myself in a big way. I'm not saying I'm aiming to become a gym leader in the future but...well I can see why people assume that is what I'm trying to say."
"Blissey."
Bri felt her smile widen a little more as the Happiness pokemon gave a nod like she understood. The dancer suspected she might, alrelady she thought of the pink pokemon as one of her more level headed and dependable pokemon. Certainly better than Jack's newfound (and unfounded) outrage at Pidgeys. Did that extend to other bird pokemon too? The idea made her sigh. How could she deal with that? Try to convince one of the Pidgey’s to lose a fight to him in an attempt to salve Jack's pride or whatever had caused him to react so harshly -what had set him off so angrily anyways?
She fished her phone out of her pocket and tapped up a quick message. Her finger hovered over the send button, what was the time back in Hoenn right now? She sighed and left the message in the box as she turned off her phone's screen and tucked it back into her bag. She would send the message later after checking that she wasn't waking someone up at one in the morning or something equally awful.
" Blii!" Abruptly the Blissey stopped and Bri paused with one foot hovering in the air. The Blissey s pointed at a spot up in the branches with one arm and waved the other energetically before turning her head to Brianna. “Sey?”
"Uh..." Bri tilted her head back and scanned the branches to spot what had been spotted.

It took Bri a couple minutes of searching to find the Metapod Blissey pointed at.It made tiny rocking motions, the movement hardly enough to rustle the leaves or move the branch under it but as Bri watched it reached the edge of the branch, then tipped over the edge.
"Eek!" Bri jumped back as it dropped down in front of her then hung in the air a dozen centimeters off the ground with a long slender string of silk leading back up into the tree. As Bri put her foot back down and leaned forward she could almost make out a more distinct darker form within the shell. It wiggled again and the dark shape under the shell moved in a way that very obviously did not fit with the shape of the Metapod.
"What is wrong with this thing?" Bri yelled as she jumped backward as the movement sent the Metapod swinging like a pendulum. There was an angry grumble from the Metapod as the cocoon swung short of hitting either Blissey or Trainer, and Bri started in surprise. "Wait, is that thing trying to attack us?"
"Bli-sssssey?" A quick look at the Happiness pokemon showed Bri that she felt as weird about this situation as the human did. Bri reached up and scratched the back of her head as the cocoon continued to make angry noises and move weirdly as it swung around.
"Uhm, okay that's odd. I thought wild Metapod just, you know, waited quietly until they could evolve." The Metapod's abruptly renewed swinging took up the entire path. Bri briefly considered stepping off to the side into the flowers to go around. She turned to suggest it to Blissey, only to see the Happiness pokemon approaching the Metapod carefully.
"Hey, what are you doing? Don't get hit at least, it's a long ways to the Center from here!" Bri called. Blissey just flicked an ear and then spread her arms wide to catch the Metapod as it swung back toward her, the move knocking the pink pokemon onto her butt as the string holding the cocoon in the air snapped.
Then began the most animated conversation Bri had seen since Jack trying to yell at her to let him fight the Pidgey. She was pretty sure that was what he had wanted.
'At least they understand each other,' Bri thought as she watched the two with a blank expression. They appeared to be talking rather animatedly to each other. She checked her phone as they continued to speak to each other, then her attention wandered and she went from looking at the time to copying and pasting her inquiry about Jack's behavior to her notepad for futher editing.
"Blii! Bliii!"
"Hmm?" Bri looked up from her phone when Blissey called her. The Blissey motioned at the Metapod then ducked low and put both hands over her head and shut her eyes tightly as if protecting herself, all but curling into a ball. The the Blissey straightened up and rapped on the Metapod on the ground next to her, the noise sounding like she was hitting a rock.
"Uhm..." Bri checked her notes for the Blissey's info. "Yoooou want to have a contest to see which of you can use Defense Curl the most?"
"Bli!" A head shake.
"Metapod doesn't know how to use Harden and can't evolve until they learn?"
"Bli." A look that was definately questioning her pokemon knowledge accompanied by an up-down motion of Blissey's arms on either side of her.
"Metapod needs the pokemon center because I don't know anything about pokemon health or Bug-types?"
That made Blissey pause for a moment before sighing, the pink pokemon's little shoulders sagging before she nodded. Bri didn't brighten at finally getting the answer right, it was very clearly not what Blissey had wanted to hear.
"Lets leave that option for last until I guess correctly-or wait, is this something that will cause Metapod short term harm? Or is dangerous in the short term?" A headshake. Hm! Bri...didn't quite know what that was told her but maybe she could still help with whatever it was.
"Is it something that can be bad in the long term?" Blissey made the arm motion again then bounced up to her feet. With a twirl she raised an arm high and then struck downward at the Metapod in waht Bri could recognize as a Pound!
"Hey! Don't just suddenly attack people out of nowhere! Wait, that barely did anything." Bri put her scolding on pause as she leaned closer to examine where her pokemon had struck.
As far as she could tell Blissey's attack hadn't done a thing. It was like the Bug-type had already maxed its defenses with Harden and now it's carapace had stiffened to the point it was inpentrable.
...
Oh.
"Metapod used Harden too many times and now can't evolve properly?" She asked. It was a wild, unfounded guess but apparently she should have scheduled today for 'crazy things' day because Blissey nodded and cheered and even the Metapod's eyes managed to close in happy little crescents.
"Let me think a moment, I think we can actually help with this." Bri straightened up to dig her bag, her hands pausing over the pokeballs as she considered her options. The obvious need was to get the carapace open, but should she try with something sharp or something that bypassed the bug's boosted defense stat? If she was in a real fight the choice would be obvious.
She might as well stick with what she knew.
"Pidgey 2! Come out!" With an affronted squawk the stronger of the two birds appeared in front of her. She didn't give his displeased expression any attention, merely pointed at the Metapod and confidently yelled, "Gust that thing open!"
Luckily he paused to glare at Bri. It gave Blissey enough time to scramble out of the way just before a blast of wind tore through the spot she had been sitting and engulfed the Metapod as well. A tear opened in the green carapace and then a bright flash of light obscured Bri's vision.
"Butterfree!" When Bri lowered her arm the butterfly pokemon was high-tailing it into the woods, and the bird on the ground was prepping for launch.
"Don't," Bri said as she very casually reached out with her foot and nudged the Pidgey off balance before he could take off in pursuit. "We did what we wanted to do and I promise to feed you extra later if you don't chase it."
A look at the Blissey and another at the way Bri's hands were on her hips and Pidgey 2 fluffed his feathers grumpily but allowed himself to be recalled.
"Well, that went...well." Bri said tentantively as she and Blissey started walking again. "Do you like, know a lot of the pokemon here?"
"Bli!" Jack - lv 7 - 2/5 Ben - lv 2 - 3/5 Pidgey - lv 5 - 4/5 Blissey - lv 6 - 2/5 +1 lv (she hit it with pound and used defense curl, totally counts) Pidgey - lv 10 - 4/5

The walk after the Metapod fiasco was calm, quiet, and relaxing. Chattering with Blissey, throwing out names and watching her reactions so Brianna could tailor her suggestions to something that appealed more. Eventually she found one and considering the way Blissey had looked at Jack earlier she thought she had a good one.
"How about Juliet? You could go by Julie for short." She suggested with a gesture. The pink pokemon hummed thoughtfully then nodded.
"Bliss!"
"Mm, it might be a good thing if I don't use Romeo, wouldn't want a tragedy after all." Bri remarked with a cheeky grin. She got a confused headtilt and an uncomprehending 'bli?' for her trouble. She sighed and ran a hand through her bangs. "I'll introduce you to theatre later. Maybe start with a nice comedy. Maybe we should just call you Julie. Is that okay?"
Luck was with her, or just a very agreeable Blissey who seemed almost too desperate to agree to everything Bri said. That...could be a problem. A probrlem for future-Bri she decided!
"What do you-oh, hello there. Can we help you?" The last was said to a lithe purple form that stepped onto the path ahead of them. The normal-type beside her stiffened, the round body going still in preparation for violence. His ears were up, eyes bright and alert but not hostile. Bri sighed internally with relief. Her team was mostly in decent shape but she really didn't feel like another fight right now, although this would be excellent training for Ben....
With a flick of the pronged tail the Espeon's abruptly soured as if sensing her intent and he turned and bound off into underbrush.
"...That's fine too." Bri said with a reassuring pat on Julie's head. "Hey, if you're feeling tired you should let me know, okay? I don't mind walking on my own."
"Bli-bli!" Was the response. A clenched paw, a look of determination despite the tiredness she could see around Julie's eyes and the musses in her fur. Bri sighed and removed her head with a smile.
