Occasional spots of light drifted across the ground as the sun peeked through the holes in the cloud. Brianna stood off to the side of the road leading out of the city and looked over the path ahead of her with some satisfaction.
"It's a good thing I wore my running shoes. Especially since I'm going to be carrying your baby legs before too long." She said to the tiny pink form that was currently sitting on her foot and staring at everything. The tiny head craned back to look up at her and she got a tiny 'mew!' in response that had her smiling.
"Yes, yes, I love you too." She said indulgently. She unslung the large bag from her shoulder and checked the blanket wrapped bundle inside before setting it to the side and gently picking up the tiny skitty and setting him to the side as well. "Stay here for a second, I want to stretch."
Almost as soon as she had put him down the skitty had started nosing around the bottom of the bag. While Brianna stretched her arms he nosed at the handle, then gave a couple swats to the tassles that were hung from it. While Brianna picked up her feet he backed away from the bag and then dropped into a croach. His tail began to sway behind him, his ears flattened against his head. The bag was hiding the fun-hard-weird ball from him but he would win, he would be victorious in the end!
"Skiiii!"
"Whoa-HEY NO!" With a yelp Bri lunged for him, hands outstretched but her reaction far too late to stop the feline's head from impacting with the side of the bag with a loud 'POMF'.
Other than the newly acquired dent in the canvas bag's side ther was no other sign of trouble. Bri's hands closed about his sides and she snatched him up, turning him so she could face him. "No! Bad! How many times do I gotta tell you not to do that!"
He purred, pleased to hear the adoration of his most feverant fan.
She sighed and tucked the troublemaker under her arm before leaning over the top of the bag. Carefully, her expression tense and her breath held, she pulled back the blanket to reveal an egg nestled inside. She turned it carefully while the skitty looked on ears pricked forward and tail merrily waving behind him as his human confirmed no damage had come to the weirdly shaped ball within. With a sigh of relief the blanket was thrown back over the egg and he was turned to face Brianna once again, a mere inch from her face.
"Okay runt, you've got to stop attacking my bag while I'm carrying that egg. I paid good money for it and I don't want you to go cracking it. You understand?" She gave him a tiny-fun shake and he meowed cheerfully, stretching out his paws to catch her face so he could steady himself as he headbutted her nose and promptly began purring.
Bri sighed and shut her eyes. "I guess this is my fault for letting you get into the habit in the first place, huh?" She whispered, cracking open her eyes again. The skitty meowed happily, pleased to see her face and then squirmed impatiently to be let down. The human acquiscenced and smoothly turned to pick up the bag and sling the straps over her shoulder and out of reach despite his protesting yowl. Sadly for him his size rendered the sound more 'cute' than 'threatening'.
"Alright you might terror, let's get to Cherry Town."

It was such a nice little rest stop.
A large old tree with dense leaves offered shade to part of the walking path and the ground around it. Someone had seen an opportunity and cleared a section of ground near the base of the tree to install a bench and a circle of rocks, blackened and cracked from past campfires. There was a signpost with signs ranging from the number for the local Rangers to one warning against littering. Shade loving plants and flowers had been planted around the edge of the area, attracting bugs and other little animals.
It was a gentle, peaceful spot.
So why was there a bobbing black sphere carefully bobbing just ahead of her tan-and-pink agent of chaos?
"This is so awkward." Brianna said, covering her face with her hands as the Skitty lunged forward again, head lowered as it tried to Tackle the Gastly. The gentle, ghostly laughter echoed through the area as the Gastly shifted to the side as the Skitty plowed through his body, the Ghost-type moving further toward the center of the rest area to draw the over eager feline away from the flowers at the edges.
At first she had been on her feet when the Gastly had first descended from the boughs of the tree where it had apparently been resting. She had been nervous at first, worried that this was going to be a bad time but her fears had quickly been put to rest.
This wasn't a real fight, not to the Gastly. This was a chance to play.
It was obvious in the way the ghost moved: never hovering too far out of the Skitty's reach, carefully positioning himself so that when the Skitty missed or, as was more often the case, barreled through him it was never into the flowers or the bench or the tree. Never into anything that would actually hurt the very determined cat.
Brianna appreciated it, really she did, but watching how seriously the Skitty was taking this was giving her a bad case of second hand embaressment. It was as if the cat didn't realize none of his attacks were working, and while Brianna knew that wasn't soley his fault- the Gastly was one hell of an actor -but she did wish he was a little more aware of the situation.
She sighed and pulled her hands away from her face.
"Hey, Skitty, c'mere! We need to go. We have to get to Cherry Town." She really needed to come up with a name for him at some point. 'Maybe obstinate,' She thought as his ears twitched toward her and then swivelled immediately back toward the Gastly. He crouched down low to the ground, his tail high and lashing behind him before he charged forward with a loud battle cry as he threw another Tackle at the Gastly. The Gastly turned to face her, one eye closing and reopening repeatedly just before the Skitty collided with him. With a sigh like autumn leaves rattling across the ground the Gastly neither dodged nor moved. The dark sphere of his body fell to the ground and the faint purple mist rising around him shrank.
With a triumphant yowl the Skitty turned and pranced back to her, tail held high.
"Good, good work." She praised awkwardly, her gaze flicked between him and his 'defeated' opponent. She crouched down to gather the small pink and tan in her arms. He purred as she nuzzled his head, obviously pleased with himself and she found herself wondering if Skitties could learn Foresight. She certainly hoped they could, what would happen if he tried to go after a ghost that knew moves that could actually hurt him?
The movement she'd been waiting for caught her eye as the Gastly opened his eyes again, she was pretty sure it was a him from the decidedly mascular tone to his laugh, and began to levitate off the ground again. The smile on his face was fond, and again he closed a single eye when he met hers and she found herself blinking rapidly.
"You- Thank you." She finally said, a little awed and surprised. Just how smart were Gastly suppose to be again? This one was clearly clever enough to end the 'fight' early so she could continue travelling, and now that she thought about it the Gastly had only appeared while she was having trouble keeping Skitty away from some bee while she had been trying to readjust her bag.
"Do you want to come with us?" She asked as said Skitty turned from lookin gat her to face the Gastly with a very proud 'meow!~'. The gentle laugh came again and the Gastly turned and floated up into the branches of the tree.
After a while Bri walked on. She felt incredibly confused, were all pokemon like this?
Post by Brianna Flores on Apr 20, 2020 16:18:55 GMT
As Bri continued along the path she began to wonder if her travels were always going to contain a certain theme.
"So, I should probably give you a name and I think I'm going to name you Trouble. I know you don't mean to be, but you are an excellent troublemaker. How about, sound fitting?" She asked in a baby voice. The tiny cat that was currently cradled in her arms stopped his purring to twist to look at her.
"Skii~"
"Right, right, I should save that word for when you are actively in the process of causing concern, hm. Puck! Although he was more deliberately mischeveious..." She mused outloud as they walked. They were making decent progress, and the wood swere noisy enough with small bugs, birds, and pokemon she couldn't quite see from the path. Abruptly inspiration came to her and she smirked down at the skitty. "You would absolutely try to climb a beanstalk and bring a giant after us. You would try to befriend the giant rather than fight it...but I think Jack is still appropriate."
"Skitty-skit!" She laughed as he began to wiggle and bent over to let him hop back to his own feet. He promptly planted his feet and yowled at the bushes off the side of the path, then he turned to look at her and yelled again.
"Hey, don't scold me. Good things take time." She retorted as she readjusted her bag. "Sometimes that time is five minutes, sometimes that time is three months but it's all fine in the end."
"Skiiiii!"
"Look, if you wanted a name sooner you should have said something."
The Skitt-Jack huffed and stamped his front feet on the ground, his back still turned away from her as he faced the bush, his tail waving in the air behind him. Brianna look again to confirm that yes, it was a bush with eye-like berries nothing weird there and opened her mouth to say so.
"..." Abruptly she shut her mouth again and fumbled out her phone, quickly bringing up the pokedex app. "Oh."
The bush shook as whatever was hiding inside of buzzed and then leaped forward, leaving little leaves floating in the air behind it as it landed in the path in front of Brianna and the Skitt-Jack. Satisfied with finally being able to see the other Pokemon Jack's postured loosened and he leaned forward to sniff the air, his ears perked up.
Brianna stared at the spotted bug that was now puffing himself up in front of the pink cat, clearly gearing up for a fight.
"Well... at least we can hit this one."
Brianna's strategy was simple.
Fake Out, Growl, then Tackle, Tackle, Tackle their way to victory with the hopeful help of The Skitt-Jack's ability. Normally she would have asked for a Tail Whip after the flinch went off, but she had suspected from the start that the wild Ledyba was stronger than her housepet who's life had formerly included nothing more strenuous than trying to climb the curtains.
"Come here my brave Jack. Good work!" She praised when the fight was done. The Ledyba had fled after a failed Supersonic, or maybe not so failed. She realized as Jack wobbled his way back to her, his eyes slightly unfocused. He hadn't been free from injury either, there'd been a Tackle flung from the Ledyba and a barrage of stars she recognized from the move Swift.
It was for this reason that she sat on the ground with her legs crossed and pulled Jack into her lap when he finally trotted over to her.
"Hush, hush, you fought well, you did a good job." She soothed his fur and tickled his ears, distracting him with one hand while the other felt around in her bag. He was quite cheerful about the attetnion. He happily batted at her hand with his claws sheathed.
He was happy up until the point when she got a hold of his scruff and then the dreaded, the awful, the horrible bottle was brought out of the bag.
One unhappy cat and a used potion later the two were back on the road, the newly named Jack noticeably in poor spirits despite being in good health.

They had been making good time before Jack abruptly sat down to clean himself again.
“Really? You’re doing this now? Again?” Brianna demanded as she put her hands on her hips in an effort to be stern. He had been stopping to clean like this ever since she had sprayed him with the potion earlier, and while she wasn’t surprised she was annoyed. He had done the same thing at home but part of her had thought the habit would quit once they were on the road.
Apparently he wasn’t the only naive one in the group.
“You’ve cleaned your paws at least six times in the past ten minutes, Jack. C’mon, let’s go! Chop-chop!” She snapped her fingers to get his attention and it worked! Abruptly he was staring straight at her, ears up and tail alert and then abruptly he was up and moving forward. He made the weird trilling noise he made when meeting new ‘mon and she looked behind her. She saw a Pidgey keeping an eye on them as it scratched at the ground but nothing else, and Jack’s approach was all wrong for him to have spotted the Pidgey-
“Oh no you don’t!” She whirled on her foot as she twisted away from him, her eyes narrowing as she put her body between him and the bag. She was about to step over him to continue traveling when a quiet ‘crack’ sounded from the bag and she froze.
“It’s hatching!” She knelt immediately, not even trying to keep Jack away as she pulled the egg from the nest of blankets. To her surprise the Skitty didn’t approach much closer. He just puffed up and meowed the same way he did whenever he had successfully captured the end of the teaser toy.
“Ski~ Ski~”
“You’ve got really good ears, what's with that?” There was a small spiderweb of cracks on the side of the shell and things began to move rapidly.
Brianna barely got the egg on the ground before the shell began splintering in earnest, more cracks travelling outward from the center until the force inside overpowered the shell's attempt to to hold together.
With an explosion of shell pieces the Teddiursa hatched.
"Hey!" Briannan raised her arms and ducked as several pieces of shell flew towward her face. There was an surprised chirp from the Pidgey in the distance. She lowered her arms to find Jack with his face up against the Teddiura's, his tiny body vibrating as he heard him purr. She smiled at the sight then reached out to gently pat both of her pokemon on the head.
"I'm glad you're getting along."
Jack managed to pur and wound himself around his new friend who had finally stopped hiding. He took a couple steps away with a deliberate wave of his tail in front of the cub's face, the purring quieted as he peeked over his shoulder to see if he could entice his new friend in a game of tag.
The cub blinked, then shifted forward and slowly got to his feet, his body wobbling back and forth as he tried to get the hang of the tricky new reality of balancing and light. He blinked several times, then began blinking even more as a spray of sand suddenly washed over the little group.
"Hey!"
"Piiiidge!" Fluffed up and angry with a clearly visible bump on his head, the Pidgey that Brianna had spotted earlier was standing just in front of Jack. The Skitty's ears went back and he growled a warning that sounded more musical than menacing.
The bird shrank back for a moment then puffed his feathers up again before kicking another wave of sand at the trio before launching into what Brianna could tell was a very noisy scolding despite not understanding a word of it.
"Stop that right now!" She snarled, reaching forward to wrap her arm around the Teddiursa and shelter him from the sand with her coat. "He literally just hatched and you're gonna be picking a fight like this? Fine! Jack, tackle that fool!"
"Skiii!" Jack was only too happy to listen as he launched himself forward, another growl rumbling from his chest. He would have revenge for his play session being distrupted! He tucked his chin to his chest for best support as he slammed his head against the bird.
...well attempted to slam his head. With a loud squawk the Pidgey pushed off into the air just before he reached him, leaving him standing on the ground and hissing in anger. This was clearly cheating! Flying was cheating!
The Pidgey called shrilly and flapped his wings differently than before and suddenly a strong blast of wind pushed him across the ground.
Bri bit her lip then looked down as the Teddiursa squirmed and then popped his head above her arm to stare at the fight.
"Don't worry, he'll make it!" Bri reassured him as she rubbed her fingers through his fur. The cub turned his big brown eyes on her and she had to fight to keep herself from awwing at the sight...but that gave her an idea.
"Hey, you want to help stop this right?" A couple blinks and then a slow nod greeted her as one paw mvoed to the cub's mouth. Her smile sharpened and she gave him another pat on the head. "That's good! Just look just like that!"
She wrapped both around the cub's middle and stood and faced the fight, holding the newly born cub directly in front of her. "Hey bird! We'd like to talk!"
The pidgey turned to look at her, his expression more nervous than before. He squawked a question and she looked down at the bear to direct the bird's attention to him. She watched through her bangs, her smile still in place as the Pidgey's attention shifted to the bear and her mouth barely moved as she whispered. "Baby-doll eyes!"
As if by magic the Teddiursa's cuteness was suddenly magnified. His wide, innocent eyes above his slowly moving mouth as he licked at his paw. The pidgey's will faltered and flapped his way closer to Brianna and the cub, landing between them and Jack. He seemed less hostile now and more sheepish as he hopped forward, his demeanor nonhostile.
Brianna's head snapped up and she smirked.
"Tackle!" With a loud cry Jack flung himself forward to smack against the bird, his tail lashing angrily as he bowled into the surprised bird with vengeful yowl.
The cub started to squirm and Bri couldn't dig through her bag with both arms occupied so she released him as she dug through the mess of blankets in her bag for a pokeball.
While she was distracted the cub picked himself up and charged forward. He pulled his paw away from his mouth, a shadow seemingly cast over his claws as he watched Jack leap away from a retalitory Tackle. The cub reached out and Slashed.
The surprised cry of the bird brought Brianna's attention back to the fight right as her hand closed around a pokeball.
"What are you doing?!" She demanded, shocked as despite the cub's proximity to the bird Jack lunged at the bird again and missed, going several inches to the side. The bird let out an alarmed cry and in an act of desperation Brianna threw the pokeball at it. Jack the Skitty, lv 6 4/5 Teddiursa, lv 1 4/5 Combat Catch + Trainer's Bonus

"Tch. Not enough?" Bri scooped up the pokeball as it rolled back to her foot then pointed at the bird.
"Jack! Tackle!"
"Mrowr." The cat planted his butt on the ground with ears back and tail stiff and angrily lashing behind him. Bri opened her mouth to yell at him when a brave cry reached her ears and she watched as the newly hatched Teddiursa once again attacked the Pidgey with claws that seemed to be trailing whips of shadow.
"Is that Night Slash? Wait that's not important!" She shook her head to break herself out of her musings and tossed the pokeball back at the Pidgey. The moment the ball left her hands again she reached down to wrap both arms around the bear cub and physically haul him out of the danger zone. "You hatched literally less than ten minutes ago! I know you want to help but stop being so brave! Just like, distract him while Jack does the actual fighting."
"Ursa?" A curious head tilt and a look she was being to suspect was carefully constructed to be cute greeted her words and she sighed and let her head hang.
"You're going to be another problem child aren't you? Well at least you can actually fight a ghost..."
"Mrow!"
"You were in a stalemate and you didn't even realize it." She told the protesting Skitty who had turned his attention from the ball he was currently guarding. "And what's with you? You wouldn't fight it when I asked?"
"Mrrr." Jack's growl was just as musical when directed at his human but he didn't expect her to understand! Who wanted a cheating cheater who flew and kicked sand in your face and and could blow angry wind at you?? That kind of stuff was only acceptable when he was doing it!
Post by Brianna Flores on Apr 30, 2020 14:35:22 GMT
This was getting ridiculous.
Brianna could feel a vein twitching on her forehead as she scooped up the pokeball again and examined it. Twice it had failed to contain the bird but it also hadn't broken yet either. Was that a good sign or a bad omen?
She took a deep breath. Could she afford to pass by this opportunity? There had been a distinct lack of normal types on her travel so far, but then again she had only run into three pokemon that weren't her own.
And despite looking afraid the bird was sticking around, that showed it had guts at least.
"Come on Jack, don't make the baby do all the work! Tail Whip!" Jack huffed. He didn't want to play with someone that cheated! He didn't want to fight someone that cheated either but catching the bird would make Brianna feel better, and his new friend had done a better job tagging the bird than he had. That was normally okay, but his new friend was literally a baby.
Jack might be childish, but he still had his pride!
He sighed loudly to show how Not Happy with the situation he was then turned and wagged his tail at the bird. The featherbrain's attention snapped to it and his feathers puffed up as he swaggered forward. One of his feet drew back and Jack looked away, ears back and angry. He wasn't falling for that trick again!
"Get him Jack! Tackle!"
The moment the the sand passed over head he spun about and lunged forward. He planted his front foot and shifted sideways just before contact to slam his body into Pidgey. He leaped backward as the Pidgey moved to follow, then at the last moment the bird's concentration faltered as he looked to the side and the subsequent hit was a lot softer than Jack had been expecting.
Considering the flustered squawk the bird had been hoping for a harder hit too.
"Good work little guy!" What a relief! The bear had listened and stuck to using Baby-doll eyes from a distance rather than trying to tumble into melee range again. This gave Bri an opportunity to toss the pokeball into the melee of bird and cat.
One last throw, she thought as the ball left her fingers and she watched it arc through the air. if it breaks, I finish the fight and move on.
One hard-working Poke Ball has been removed from your inventory, taken up by Ball Guy himself to Ballhalla, where it way rest knowing its purpose has been fulfilled.
Post by Brianna Flores on Apr 30, 2020 17:35:51 GMT
"Finally." If that worried carried a lot of frustration and relief, well, would anyone really be surprised? Brianna trotted over to the ball and scooped it up. She turned it over for a moment in her hand then shook her head and stowed it away. While it was tempting to properly welcome her new teammate to the group, she really didn't want to look at that pokeball right now.
It was probably best to give Jack a little time to let his frustration at the Pidgey dissipate. She, of course, was compeltely stable nad fine now but still.
For Jack's sake.
"Good work you too." She said to the two pokemon that were currently out and about. The Teddiursa tilted his head while his eyes closed into happy arches. His mouth was hidden by his paw, she could tell from the noise he was licking it gain, and briefly Brianna wondered if that was a habit she would need to put a stop to.
"Skitty!~" Jack bounded over to the Teddiursa and nuzzled as high on the cub as he could reach: the bear's leg. Brianna put a hand over her mouth and smiled. Jack's size had not hindered him at all during the fights they had faced so far, maybe it wouldn't be as much of a concern as she had thought. There were still serious matters to discuss, and she felt her expression tighten as she snapped her fingers to get the attention of her two team members.
"Hey, don't go being all full of yourselves just because we won. We've got a long way to go and we got to lay down some ground rules." Her hands dropped to her hips as she stared them down, purposely keeping her back and shoulders square. She needed respect, she needed them to listen, and she couldn't be soft or she would undermine the message being given.
"You, little cub, are very brave and it's a good thing but you got to temper that. You can't be going up to every and any 'mon you see to fight 'em. You'll end up hurt that way." A questioning noise and a head-tilt met her words and she sighed. He was just a baby, had she made it too complicated for him? "Look, just stay out of the direct fights unless I tell you. We can work on the rest later."
"You, Mr. Jack, flat out ignored me earlier. That is not going to fly where I'm going, and if you're coming with me you need to listen." She told the Skitty sternly. He moewed, loudly but happily and stretched out. With such a cute face how could she-no. She closed her eyes and counted to five then opened them again to fix him with a stern look. "Nu-uh, no charming your way out of this one. You messed up, but I know you can do better next time. So listen, okay?"
"Mroooww!"
Well that at least sounded promising. Bri sighed and ran her fingers through her bangs. How much good did scolding the two actually do? She couldn't even blame them entirely for how long it took to catch the Pidgey. It was obvious that the ball had not been faulty either. No, it was her poor judgement that had led to that in-again-and-out-again.
That was okay. As long as she knew what to work on she could approve.
She scooped up her bag and settled the handles over her shoulder. At least she wasn't carrying the egg anymore.

Brianna couldn't stop replaying the Pidgey's capture over and over in her mind.
She ran her fingers through her bangs as she reawoke from her most recent mental replay of the situation. Her personal pink ball of trouble was yowling happily at a much larger ball of pink and white and Brianna had to take a moment to rub her eyes before she looked again.
Yep, still there.
"Arceus on a cracker." She whispered disbelievingly. That was an honest to goodness Blissey staring at Jack from underneath a pine tree. THe most she knew about the Chansey line came interacting with the specially bred ones at Pokemon Centers. she had in fact thought all Chansey-line members came from captivity. That was still probably the case.
She flipped her bangs up and ignored the way they promptly fell right back in place. She had to be calm about this so the situation didn't end up as much of a mess as the Pidgey had been.
"Hey guy," She whispered as she looked down at the Teddiursa. A name needed to be picked out for him she realized. And the Pidgey. She would shove it into her schedule later, right now she nudged him gently with her foot to get his attention. The head tilted back and soon she was looking into those big adorable eyes perched above the velvety little nose above the paw held in front of his mouth. "Hey, do you remember what we talked about earlier? About not fighting up close with other pokemon yet?"
A head tilt, a pause, a nod.
She released the breath she had been holding and smiled.
"Good! In a moment Jack is going to start fighting with that Blissey, the big pink pokemon. I want you to stay out of it unless I ask. If I do ask I want you to help the way you did last time."
Head tilted even further, nose wrinkled in confusion. Last time helping had meant scratching with the shadows, last time that had gotten him yelled at. Not in the moment but after the grumpy bird had been locked away. He gurgled a question, the noise slipped around his paw.
"Yes! Just like that." She held her fingers in a box shape in front of her face as she looked at him but she wore a smile. "Look cute and hit 'em with those baby doll eyes!"
Oh, he understood. He remembered when he had done that last time. His head untilted and he nodded again then turned to watch Jack.
Jack was having a lovely time. Sure Brianna had scolded him recently but that was fiiine. She scolded him all the time! It was how she showed love, he was pretty sure. There were better ways to show love (like snacks), but he thought she probably just didn't have any on her.
That was okay. He would forgive her because instead of snacks there were friends!! New friends!! Like this one! This one was almost his colors even if she wasn't his shape. Honestly he thought she was very pretty so he told her so.
Loudly.
She was half hiding behind the tree but ever since he had started talking to her her ears and face had started getting darker than they had been before. He thought that was also very pretty and neat and how did she do that?? She was being very quiet about how she did things, in fact she was being very quiet in general!
He opened his mouth to talk to her again then heard Brianna call his name. He paused, one foot held above the ground so he could look back at Brianna while his tail twitched. She was talking about fighting, he huffed and twitched his tail. He didn't want to fight right now. There was New! Friend!
Said friend seemed to realize his dilemna because she stepped out from behind the tree and very softly, very gracefully walked a little further into the clearing and put up her paws. She dipped forward and he abruptly understood. She was up for a fight!
That was fine, he thought to himself as he lunged forward to tug at some of the fur near her legs. She was so tall and her fur was so soft! He bet if she came with them Brianna would like petting her as much as she seemed to like petting him.
She lifted a paw and slapped it down on his head and he staggered back, dazed. That hurt! She was actually going for it! He looked at her face and saw her expression scrunched up in determination.
He leaped backwards and grinned, tail high behind him as he waited for Brianna's next commands. If she wanted to show him how strong she was, than he would do the same!
He tackled and wagged his tail and growled and ran and jump and got hit and gave it his Very Best during the fight. Brianna cheered him on and commanded from the sidelines as he fought and then when both fighters were tired she pulled out a pokeball.
Jack slumped to the ground when the pokeball hit his friend, panting with the exertion from the fight. He was tired from all that showing off.

Pokeball Capture Attempt Jack - lv 6 - 3/5 Energy Teddiursa - lv 1 - 4/5 Energy Pidgey - lv 5
Post by Brianna Flores on May 9, 2020 14:53:02 GMT
"Yes!" Brianna's fist cut through the air as she punched upwards andleapt. The sudden movement startled the cub at her feet but after a moment he too raised a paw in mimicry of his trainer. She ruffled his hair and beamed at him. "That's the spirit!"
"Sa!" He nodded firmly and she smiled as she ruffled his head again.
"I think I've given your name away already." She said regretfully. She glanced over at Jack as he paced around the pokeball and sniffed it. "His would have fit you better, but I will find you a good one."
She chuckled at the questioning look and gave him a couple pats on the head before moving away to collect the newest member of their team.
Success! Just as the trouble with the Pidgey had plunged her spirits low the ease of this capture had lifted them up.
'Clearly,' a little part of her brain whispered, 'the problem was with the bird.'
As soon as she thought it she saw the truth to the words. The Pidgey had been angry after being struck by the eggshells from the egg hatching. He had been angry and mad and that didn't bode well for the future.
Pas de deux worked better when both parties were fully invested, and that was apparently as true in pokemon catching as it was in ballet.
She sighed and shook the thoughts away as she came to a stop in front of the pokeball. Jack stopped his prowling to sit and meow up at her, his cries loud and demanding. She thought she knew what he was saying but the granting of request was troublesome and awkard at best. She crouched down with her heels firmly planted on the ground as she reached out to ruffle the fur between his ears, a smile on her face.
"Sorry Jack. I really don't want to try and keep track of three pokemon all at once." A gentle tug on her jacket pulled her attention backward to the Teddiursa. She lifted an eyebrow as he stared at her. "You're going to have to use your word-okay, maybe not your words but at least try to communicate through more than cute looks."
Jack bounded around her to stand with the bear right near her back pocket, his ears perked up as the two passed quiet noises between themselves and she was left to wonder what they were discussing. Clearly they were discussing something, she just had no way of knowing what.
Maybe someday a poketranslator would be created, but in the meantime she was left to rest her chin on her arm and watch. An idea struck her and she kept her face turned toward the two pokemon as she casually reached out with her other hand to tuck the pokeball away while the two were busy with their arguements. Slowly, casually while they had their attention turned on each other, she leaned on all the acute awareness of her arms she had learned from dancing to feel the tension of her muscles. She didn't have the fine control of the speed of her movements that she had previously boasted, physical therapy had been focused on getting her to baseline, but she could remember a little. Delicately she wrapped her fingers around the ball then withdrew her arm, her focus shifted from watching the two argue in front of her as she concentrated instead on the fine movements of her fingers and the greater movements of her arm as she slowly moved her arm back.
It felt like she was suddenly hyper aware of the way her jacket hung on her body, the unconscious knowledge brought suddenly to the front of her mind as she focused on not rustling the fabric to alert the discussing pokemon. A little sleight of hand, how did magicians make it look so easy? She could feel a few drops of sweat break out across her forehead as she strained her neglected muscles by asking them to perform at a level that she simply hadn't been training them to for the past several months.

A very loud yowl and her attention snapped back just in time for a certain pink cat to launch himself into her shins. She didn't topple over -the benefit of a stable squatting position and superior size- but she did stop moving her other arm that was half-way back to her bag. Had she been caught?
"Mrow!" Jack backed away and turned in a quick circle, his movements good-natured and his cries cheerful. She looked from him to the bear who who nodded as he kept his paw in front of his mouth. His eyes closed and his mouth opened wide as he yawned and her expression softened as what they had discussed finally clicked.
"Oh, you're tired. I suppose that would be a good way to rest." She mused. She was lucky they were around her back pocket, it meant that alll her movements had been shielded by her body and she took advantage of that now to just, put the ball in her pocket. It felt anticlimatic but if she was being honest it was her fault for letting her arms' condition deteriorate.
Another yowl brought her attention to Jack and now she realized her real issue. Even after she pulled out the pokeball she had earmarked for the Teddiursa she had the very real issue of the fact that Jack wasn't going to forget what he wanted.
But maybe, just maybe, she could talk him into wanting to wait.
"Okay, take a nice rest." A flash of red and the Teddiursa was gone and Jack was beginning to bounce with anticipation. She reached a hand out and set it firmly on his head to prevent the rush of physical movement she knew was coming. "Hey Jack, don't you think it's unfair that only you have a name all your own?"
The wind rustled the long grasses of the meadow around them and Bri waited. Jack had paused mid bounce prep, his front end low to the ground with his butt and tail high. She couldn't see his face completely around her hand, but she could watch his ears twitch and swivel as he considered her words. He wasn't immediately speaking up against her idea so she pressed on.
"I think the next time we let them out, we should have names for them." Jack stepped back and she let him, her hand fell to her side as he sat and stared at her. "I think it would make them happy if we picked out names for them. Good names that they can call all their own. You want your friends to be happy, right?"
He bounced to his feet with an agreeing meow and a definate nod. She smiled and felt only the teensiest bit guilty at her manipulation as she stood and began to walk along the path again. She could use this time to accompish two, no three things at once.
"We'll start with Teddiursa! Hmm...what about Rumple from Rumplestiltskin?" Jack's disagreeing meow came from right next to her feet, his attention taken up by the task of deciding whether the names were good or not.
"Okay, okay, what aboooout Romeo?" She moved her fingers as she walked and talked. Little movements of thumb to each individual finger. She made fists then uncurled them.
"Mrow!" She flexed her fingers back in the opposite direction, arching the joints connecting digit to palm as she stretched out tendons and muscle that hadn't been stretched in ages.
"You're right, it doesn't really suit him. He's very brave. Oh! Tybalt?" Whatever she could do to regain a little of her former flexibility in her hands and arms.
"Skii~ty?" A twist of her wrists caused a clicking noise in the right and she frowned at the sound. She had done them a disservice during recovery but she would fix that.
"Yeah, we'll leave that on the bench." She walked on as the clouds overhead darken the meadow and hoped it wouldn't rain. "Hmm, Benvolio? He was the funny one that tried to make peace."

"Skii~?" Jack's response wasn't entirely negative but he didn't sound too sure of the name either! Bri could understand, it was a pretty long-name for a young bear. She didn't doubt the bear could grow into it but she didn't want to have to yell it all the time either!
"We can shorten it when we use it. Call him Ben most of the time." A nickname for his nickname. It was a silly offer but it rolled off the tongue a hell of a lot easier than Benvolio and was less likely to get her a bunch of weird looks too.
"Mreow!" Well that was certainly an estatic response! She laughed as he raced around her, disappearing and reappearing from the tall grasses on either side of the walk way.
"You're gonna wear yourself out like that." She chided good naturedly. He didn't care! He had helped pick a name for his new friend! His glee would carry him forward forever!
Twenty minutes later he was riding in Brianna's bag, panting and grateful to be resting his legs. She was walking a bit faster now, her pace no longer impeded by needing to slow down for his short legs and she still was peforming her hand exercises while throwing out names for consideration.
This time they were for the bird, and Jack didn't want to have anything to do with the process! The bird was so dumb, he hadn't even been that hurt by the hard bits from Ben's egg! Just mad and he had only gotten madder the longer the fight went on! Frankly the bird hadn't wanted to be on the team at all and Jack was a-okay with that!
Brianna wasn't getting the hint though.
"Oh come on, you've said the same flat no to every name so far and I've at least a hundred! Do you just not like him or something?"
Yes! Finally! He yelled loudly as he listed off all the ways the bird was dumb! First, he was A Cheater who flew higher than Jack could reach! Secondly he could attack from far away with air! Who did that to people, turning good breathable air into painful blasts?! It was downright cruel! Third, or was he on the fourth reason, there was how angry he had been at Ben! Right after Ben finally came out of his shell, literally!, and That Bird would have been happy driving him back in! And that was only the beginning of the list. It went on and on and on!
"Uhm," Brianna stared as Jack took a breath, her eyes on her bag rather than the road. This...This was going to be a problem. She had never heard the cat so worked up about something before! And to hear him yelling about a potentional team member....
Well it wasn't good.
"He was pretty grumpy when we met, but I bet you he could come around with time." She plunged into a gap in the yelling when Jack had to draw breath. He had some serious lungs! She had to grasp at straws for possible reasons why the cat didn't like him, something about the way the bird had reacted to Ben's hatching? She wasn't entirely sure and she didn't entirely care.
"We'll sit him and Ben and you down and make things peachy keen later. I bet he isn't as bad as you're thinking he is!" She brought her foot down on something round and hard and snapped her jaw shut as she fought for balance, her arms pinwheeling wildly.

She brought her foot down hard, her years of dance-training taking over her momentary panic as she found her footing and reasserted herself. Jack yowled his concern and she dropped a hand to run her fingers through his fur, an act meant to soothe him as well as herself. She didn't relish the thought of spraining her ankle all the way out here.
"Hush, hush, s'fine just a little...apricorn? Huh." She looked around at the grass and low brush in the area around her. She couldn't see anything she could comfortable identify as an apricorn bush but honestly someone would have to smack her in the face with one before she did. She tucked the offending fruit into the bag with Jack and continued on.
"Alright, we'll move onto your new pink friend's name, how about it?"
