Rostered from 6am onwards, Adelaide was a right sleep-walking mess. She'd barely managed to pull some decent looking makeup on and curl her hair before pushing herself out the hotel and to her shift, with only minutes to spare. The manager had already given her a warning or two, but because she was younger than the others in the store they let her off the hook easily. She was the only one working on serving drinks today, as Dory was out sick, which meant double the trouble, especially so early on.
Truthfully, Adelaide was just glad that she didn't have to work at the register so early, right now that was Brendo's job, and from the look of it he looked to be about to pop a blood vessel as an elderly lady struggled with her change. She didn't understand his insistence to work counter, but as long as he didn't make a scene all Addy could do was sigh, make some... decent looking coffee's and hope she didn't have to deal with chaos today, lest she break down on the spot.
Pouring the milk and preparing to take an Espresso out, the girl could barely contain how tired she was- because of course she'd been up all night fussing to Tawny about mew knows what- and every time she spotted a customer staring at her she could only assume that the perfectly pinned back portion of her fringe wasn't so perfectly pushed back, or that they recognized her and were five seconds from making a fuss about Diamonde's sister being so, so low in comparison to the all shiny diamon-
Adelaide, snap out of it and serve the coffee! Early morning shifts were the worst.
Juni too was exhausted but for slightly different reasons than Addy was. She had made it out bright and early on the very first ferry out of Ivy Town so that she could get some shopping done. Ivy Town was lovely and full of science but ultimately too small to have some things that Birch City could offer. Birch City, however, also had a lot more people and a lot more traffic and Arceus knew what else.
But damn she was tired to be up that early in the morning. Walking down the snowy way through Bass, Juni rubbed her eyes several times and still didn’t manage to completely wipe the sleep from them. Ugh…. And of course in her rush to get out and get there, she’d forgotten to eat at all. Looking around for a good spot to stop in and get something, she just so happened to see a coffee shop on the corner. Oh, oh that was perfect actually.
Walking in quickly, Juni was met with warmth and the scent of brewings. Fluidly she went over to the counter and ordered a triple shot espresso within a bigger hot mocha and a few of the smaller scones that looked more like donut holes to her than actual scones. Fiddling out her credit card, she paid and then went to sit on one of the low couches and wait.
A tuck of hair was tucked behind Addy's ear and she bustled around in their small cafe-area, a bit of milk here, a bit of espresso here. Easy enough to deal with! As she's working away, trying not to let her thoughts get the best of her another order is lined up, pinned above the main coffee machine and called out.
Since Adelaide was the person doing the least amount of work right now she dawdled over, peering at the little slip of paper before calling out, "Triple shot espresso- uh- within a bigger... hot mocha?" There was a pause, and she squinted, how did she... do that? You know what, she'll figure it out. She turned to one of the other Baristas then, "...Are the espressos strong enough, or am I going to have to do a quad shot instead of three..."
The worker stared at her unsure, a mumble of "Three's fine." Leaving their lips, right- right- did she look stupid?! Were they going to judge here everytime they had a shift together now, just because she asked a question?! Adelaide didn't want that, at all! Her thoughts swam with everything wrong with that last encounter as she got to work, making the customers order and travelling out back for a moment to grab some Scones before loading them onto a plate...
Alright... okay... oh! She moved for a second to grab a marshmellow, using the drawing chocolate to give it a little skitty face before balancing it against the mug and venturing out into the tables... right, and this was for... one of the ladies on the couches? Her gaze drew around the room for a second before landed on a red head, and the girl managed to keep her composure.
She looked ired, like she'd been working ten hours despite the day only just stating, and yet... she was... kinda pretty, in a i-dont-care kinda way- Addy no! You can't instantly think like that whenever you see somebody who has the same gender as you! She managed a quick intake of breath before continueing forward, presenting the plate to the lady. "U-Uhm... triple shot espresso- in a large h-hot mocha.... and... b-baby scones?"
Juni had been zoned out from the moment she’d hit the couch to the moment Addy started speaking. Blinking rapidly, after, though, she looked up stunned. What was—oh? Oh. Right, she’d ordered, right yeah— “Ah thanks,” she answered reaching to take the mug and the plate.
Wait— wait did she hear that right? “Baby scones?” Is that what they were actually called? Baby shark do-do-te-do-te-do baby shark— Arceus, Juni had spent months getting that out of her head from the last time. A small puff of air escaped from Juni before she shook her head and giggled instead. “Sorry, got a funny song stuck in my head again. Thanks…again…” she smiled a little more now before taking a sip of her drink.
Adelaide politely stands before her, trying her best not to fidgit and look like a total mess, mew knows she's been told off countless times for doing that before. At the ladies question all Adelaide could do was nod, yeah! Baby scones, tiny little ones made by one of the cafe people... not that she'd ever seen them get made- what if they're contaminated?! And that's why she'd never seen them get made?! Was she willingly poisoning the customers?! Would she get arreste-
The lady spoke again, offering a second thanks and Adelaide bowed her head, "...it's u-uhm, n-no worries, ma'am..." She moved to take a step back, however paused, slightly curious- conversing with the customers could either make or break their morning... but... . "...funny s-song?"
Juni had kept giggling as the barista headed back to wherever— only to stop and ask her about the song. “Oh, uh….” some color came to Juni’s features, and a hand immediately reached up to play with a few locks of hair. She was a doctorate, a scientist, but also….
“Have you heard of Baby Shark by chance?” she asked a bit awkwardly. “It’s a song developed for little children, but it’s got this really catchy beat…I have my speculation that it’s due to the beats per minute being just double that of a traditional heart beat— If you have a second—” Shifting to the side purse she’d been wearing, Juni pulled out a phone and then immediately started typing in the song name to Chutube.
It came up entirely too fast, and before her resolve completely melted, Juni pressed play.
The girl had shaken her head, she barely spends time online, too petrified that she'll read something bad about herself, or about other people, or misinterpret other peoples words, or see something about her sister- she does do shopping online though! But she'd never heard the title... baby shark before. It sounded peculiar, and Addy fiddled with her name badge as the lady explained- created for little children, but catchy?
So... it was like a pop song? Wait- the lady was going to show her?! Adelaide sent a glance back to her station, a soft sigh leaving her upon noticing it wasn't actually too busy, She could spend a few minutes standing here, that's alright! "P-Peculiar..." left her lips at the ladies explanation, before she turning to glance at what she was doing.
Searching up the song, probably. Adelaide could only wait with baited breath as the red-head got it up and pressed play. Adelaide could only furrow her eyebrows slightly, this was... a song. She could definitely tell it was for kids, and moved to brush a hand through her hair- it wasn't her taste in music at all, but... it was... incredibly repetitive.
"I-It's... really repetitive- it... m-might also have to do with the easily r-remembered lyrics..." She managed out, glancing around the cafe anxiously- oh she hoped nobody had been bothered by it- but, by the looks of things, a few nearby customers were groaning or sending sharp glares.
Oh she'd have to apologize on her way back- she was going to get fired for letting this lady show her a video, wasn't she?! Noooo.
Hot embarrassment immediately scorched Juni’s features as the song started playing. Groudon all mighty she was so thankful that she rarely came onto the mainland or had to interact with this particular coffee shop too much. She’d have died had the girl been an otherwise familiar face in any form or fashion.
As the song finished, she pocketed her phone again, and the rest of the café breathed a sigh of relief that it wasn’t about to be repeated over and over again at nauseum like some had inadvertently expected it would. Juni sighed right after.
“It’s just… stupid and catchy and…” Juni shook her head and shorted a bit at herself. “But the…. baby scones just… reminded me of that, so…” Why was she bothering to explain this again? Ugh, Juni reached up and rubbed the side of her face to cool her cheeks. Whatever. It was whatever. She was above caring what common people thought of her. She just had to remember that. Picking up a scone, she ate it quickly and then gulped some coffee. That was better, kind of.
Adelaide nodded as the lady spoke, biting down on her lip for a moment. Stupid... and catchy- she wasn't wrong- well- the catchy bit! And she just nodded as if she was agreeing with the lady saying the stupid bit! Would the lady hurt her?! No- no... it's okay- uh- "N-No! It's not stupid!" She rushed out, eyes wide for a second before shaing her head furiously back and forth, "I- uh- understand your...a-adoration for it- or- uh- respect?? likeness?" What are words, breathe Addy! "M-Maybe- i'll.. talk to the manager about making baby sharpedo s-scones...?"
That'd be something, right?! Although, so many customers had groaned at it- would they lose business? This lady looked fairly aflamed- maybe she should go, uh... "If... that's a-all ma'am...?" She managed out, moving to fidgit with her badge, checking if that was all she was needed for.
What do you take me for? Juni’s features scrunched up as the barista assured her it wasn’t stupid. A-adoration??? What came after that so thoroughly stumped Juni that she just sat there for a few seconds wordlessly. She blinked a couple of times back into reality as the girl spoke again. “Ah, y-yeah thanks….” she finally answered nodding her head and going back to eating for now. She felt… so weird right now and kind of wanted to evaporate, but she had more of a spine than that— or so she told herself.
Meanwhile, the chime of the door being opened reverberated, and a happy looking blonde with bright pink-purple eyes came stepping through. “Good morning!” she beamed to the service people, Addy included.
Oookay- she could go back to working now! A quick head-bow and Adelaide was on her way, slipping back into the little kitchen area to take stock on what other orders needed to be made- mew save her, she had no idea how to deal with people, especially not in the mornings- had she spoken to that lady for too long? Not long enough?! Could her negligence leave her fired without even realizing what she'd done wrong?! Adelaide would hate that... customer service sure was...
A cheery good morning had the girl pausing amidst filling up somebodies cup, glancing up at the incredibly cheery blonde- it was... so early?! How could a girl have so much energy? Thankfully, Adelaide wasn't on counter so she could just duck her head and return to working on the coffees while all her coworkers replied back with cheery, or at least 'decent sounding 'morning's back to the girl, one getting ready at the counter to take her order.
Juni glanced over to the bright cheery ray of sunshine that was Elise and then immediately sighed and drank more coffee. She wasn’t sure how peppy people like that actually existed, but Groudon made them for a reason, of so she supposed. At least she wasn’t her problem specifically.
Elise, meanwhile, came up to the front and smiled at the barista there. “Hi! I’d like a Arcecano with extra whipped cream and soy milk! I’d also love the breakfast special thingy!” She tapped on the glass where there appeared to be a number of things she could be pointing to. The cashier asked her which row and where, and Elise bent down over the glass to check. “Third row, the one on the right! Yeah! The pink strawberry muffin thingy! Exactly!”
After placing her order, she went sipping over and plopped down in a bean bag chair to wait and check her phone for any incoming messages.
Adelaide had managed to get back into the quiet swing of making coffees, glancing up at the orders given and working away, trying not to dwell on how unprofessional she just was! She'd only had this job for a few months, surely she was just about ready to get fired, or... or... something else! Arceus, save her. An Arcecano, that can distract her! Soy milk, a bit of this here, a little bit of that- a cute marshmellow pikachu on the side of the plate, a bird mon on the top of the coffee- and... the breakfast special! Plating all done, Adelaide took a deep breath- back out into the world of fussy customers and people who are way too peppy at stupid hours of the morning.
Uhh- oh right it was- it was for the really cute girl!?!?! Adelaide all at once went red- oh- oh she couldn't do this. Uh- uhm. She approached the girl, already turning beet red before she could even say anything, plate and cup held tightly in her hands. "T-The... soy...Arcecano- a-and the- the- uh- breakfast special?"
As motion caught her eye, Elise looked up and smiled at the other girl as she approached with her order. “Oh! Thank you!” she smiled taking the cup and then letting the plate be set down. “You’re looking beautiful today!” she complimented with much bright vigor. Never mind that she totally missed the other girl’s blushing features and just sort of went with the good mood! Compliments! Compliments for everyone!
Juni very briefly glanced over and raised an eyebrow. Elise caught her eye and immediately smiled. “I love your glasses! They really go well with your eyes!” Elise went on. Juni found a little warmth touching her cheeks and a muttered out “Ah… thanks” was what Elise would receive back. The latter just giggled.
She could do this, as soon as the order was confirmed Adelaide could put the plate down and flee- leave the space of the cute girl who's hair was perfect, whos skin was flawless and who very obviously was above her in every way. As she was thanked the plate was put down and she went to take a step away, to dissapear into the flow of the cafe and keep her head low, dissapearing into the hum of the morning- only for the girls next words to cut right into Adelaide. Wait- wait- wait- wait- w- what?! SHe's looking- no- not her- not her with her eyebags and her glasses and her hair- and- a very audible, loud shriek left her, which she quickly attempted to cover up by pushing a fist into her closed lips. Arceus mew jirachi giratina save her.
She was sent her as a spy. She was sent here to put Adelaide off her game so she'd get fired- to use her weakness for cute girls against her- Adelaide barely noticed the women she served before getting complimented, she was frozen. She should move- move before this obvious agent sent by her sister could get the better of her- so this really really really pretty girl can't say anything el-
DID SHE REALLY LOOK BEAUTIFUL!? No. No. Obviously not. Sure she spent eons on her hair and makeup but nobody would just notice when going upon their morning routines- was this girl taking an interest in herif she wasn't one of Dia's spies?! If she was taking an interest what did Adelaide say?! No! Nooo- she couldn't say anything. Was it getting hot in here or was she overheating?! Would it be okay to take off her apron-
No. No. No- obviously not. Her hands moved to clutch at the fabric over her chest as she stared at Elise. She was staring for too long, she was red- she was looking awkward- she was going to getyelled at and fired for making such a fuss all because of this princess who was way too chipper way too early in the morning. She couldn't speak, mouth dry, eyes wide- words- make words-
Oh. Oh she was feeling feint. Oh mew- uhm- uhm... "...c-cute..." Wwere the only words that managed to leave her, followed by a disasterous chain of, "Sorry sorry sorry i'm staring i k-know it's weird i-it's just so early a-and people don't usually c-compliment other people t-they don't show an interest in- d-does that make sense? A-And i'm only a worker a-and obviously you've been s-sent here to sp- or- or m-maybe you're just here to have b-breakfast- i'm- do you need another drink???"
As Adelaide shrieked, Juni jolted and whipped around. Elise blinked wide and stared confusedly. It was after that that Elise commented on Juni and the latter muttered something under her breath and turned back around again. Elise glanced back to Adelaide again and smiled a bit softer. Cute? “Oh! Thank you!” she smiled back reaching up to draw a few fingers through her hair. Everything was fine, right? Right.
….And then Adelaide started speaking. Elise blinked slowly not really understanding the string of notes that were escaping from the other girl. After a moment, though, she smiled. “Well! I figure everyone should start on a good morning,” she decided aloud nodding her head with her own words. “I think I’m good for now, though! Thank you!” She lifted the drink that Addy had just sent down and then took a sip of it. “It’s great thanks! My name’s Elise, what’s yours?”
Adelaide found herself quickly cutting her words off and moving her hands to fidgit with her tag, fingers tracing the metal as the calculated all the different ways she'd get scolded for literally shrieking and quite possible offending the potential cute spy infront of her. Or... maybe not... if she was a spy she'd be trying to get her secrets out of her. She was just... a really chipper girl. Even her responses to Adelaide sounded chipper- but could she be wearing a mask!? Faking it-
What if she was secretly super upset and covering it up, and seeing out Adelaide to talk to beca- no. That's too much of a jump. She's just a customer trying to make morning conversation. Arceus, how Addy wished Nymph was here to snap her back into shape. After her thank yous Adelaide nodded, fully prepared to flee from the conversation and get back to work- only... the girl gave her name.
Elise- arceus it even sounded like it belonged to a princess?! Uh- uhm... Adelaide gestured towards the nametag she was fidgiting with, barely managing out a, "...A-Adelaide..." a few beats passed of the girl awkwardly shuffling spot to spot before she managed out, "...A-Are you always this chipper in the mornings?! Not that it's a bad thing but i'm just confused- of course i'll leave you be if conversation isn't for you i'm sorry- i'm just not used to so much positivity so early??"
Why did the name Elise sound familiar? Juni had never met someone with that name before, so why was it ringing in her head like that. Maybe it’s just one of those names…. She guessed as much. Eating gingerly, Juni continued to listen in on the conversation between Elise and— Adelaide. Well, that was kind of an interesting name too. Meh…. Juni wouldn’t remember their names five minutes out the door.
Elise, meanwhile, held eye contact with the girl as she named herself. “That’s such a pretty name! Nice to meet you Adelaide!” Was she always this chipper in the mornings? As the girl went on to explain herself, Elise giggled softly and took a sip of her drink. “I try to be!” she answered. “A lot of people aren’t morning people, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a good morning if they try, ya know?” Elise flashed a grin and shrugged her shoulders. “So I try and be as peppy as I can— for everyone’s sake!” Another giggle. “And don’t worry about ‘bother me’! You’re not!” she assured. “I love meeting new people!”
....Arceus this girl was peppy. The hell was wrong with her? Juni reached up and rubbed one temple without saying anything.
How could she say something like that while keeping eye contact?! Was this some sort of trial!? Was this girl like- somebody from undercover boss- or- no that'd be illegal especially hitting on Adelaide when her boss was like fifty- and a dude. But-but- uhm- she wasn't- no- her name wasn't pretty?! It was Adelaide- adddd-eeee-lay-deh. But this pretty girl using her pretty lips to call her name pretty had Adelaide freaking the hell out on the spot, pushing her fingers right into the groove of her badge and very, very quickly averting her gaze. What did she say?! What were people supposed to say?? Uh- a thanks... yeah- but... but Adelaide wasn't a pretty name, espeically not when contrasted with her sisters... oh! Oh that could be a test! If she said Dia's was prettier, then she had to be a spy!
"Uh.... u-uhm..." Cmon Addy! Just ask the question! "...t-thank...thank you- uh..." You got this! Make words leave your mouth, form them with your tongue! "....pop...p-pop quiz- w-what name is prettier? A-Adelaide? or... D-Diamond?" Pop quiz?! POP QUIZ?! Adelaide could die right now and she wouldn't have to deal with the consequences of calling it a pop quiz- oh Tawny would be rolling if she heard her.
The girl spoke now, explaining why she was so... pretty- no- wait. Peppy. That's the word. And she was giggling and she was smiling and- get a hold of yourself Adelaide! A simple barista could never be with a princess who probably would have squashed her if she ever went to highschool- thank mew for homeschooling. Adelaide was very, very quickly becoming non verbal, her stutters were bound to take over completly if she spoke now, but the girl... she loved meeting new people- she loved meeting Adelaide- she loved.... Ade-
No! Adelaide! It's too early for your conclusion jumping! She could be a spy! For Diamond! Or- maybe a rival coordinator! A-ha! Wait- wait. Adelaide realized she'd taken too long to respond and audible let out a squeak, eyes widened. "S-Sorry- I w-was thinking of a response I really d-didn't know what to s-say with you s-sitting there so e-expectantly a-and your voice is s-so sweet I must have gotten l-lost- but- yeah- peppy- mornings... g-g-good?" ADELAIDE. ADELAIDE. RETREAT. MAYDAY. Warning signs flashed left and right and Adelaide's face just... fully flushed. BACKTRACK. Backtrack, Adelaide! "S-Sorry... i-i'm not a morning... person- my m-mind is- uhm... do you want... more c-coffee?!"
Wait she already asked that- wait?! Wait! Her eyes widened, and she quickly shook her head. "...Uhm- uh- uhm-" Eyes flicked around, before landing directly at Juni, "D-Do you- I mean- do y-y-you need... more coffee? I'll g-get you more coffee??"
“Pop quiz??” Elise repeated blinking slowly at the question. “Uh… well, I think both are pretty? But Diamond kind of is like…. less unique? I’ve heard a lot of people name their Pokemon like that. But! It’s still pretty!” Elise paused and giggled. “But like you can shorten Adelaide to Adel which is pretty cute!” Elise was all about cute nicknames!
She watched thereafter as the girl seemed to… struggle with something? Elise just smiled and waited. The sudden thrust of conversation after that had Elise’s cheeks warming a little. Her voice was sweet? Sweet enough that this girl had gotten lost in it? O-oh ehehehe. Tony had said something like that before. That was why she was one of the singers of PNG and all!
….But even still Elise could tell Adelaide was on edge. Maybe rambling was just …. How she eased her nerves or something? “Uh… I’m good!” she assured raising her coffee again. Juni felt eyes on her but didn’t make eye contact with Adelaide. Instead, she took a long sip of her own coffee and outright pretended not to hear a damn thing.
“Oh but! If you like my voice, I’m— actually doing a concert later today,” Elise went on. “I’m part of the idol group, Pixie Nightmare Girls! Have you heard of us yet?”
