Julia beamed at Juni's praise. "Yeah, I guess she..." Julia trailed off, a look of realization blossoming on her face before it broke into an excited grin. "Serenity! That's a perfect nickname for her!" Lucky cooed excitedly and fluttered around their new teammate's Poké Ball.
Julia started a bit when her phone pinged, only to remember that with Serenity's capture, she now had seven Pokémon with her. She used her free hand to fish her phone out of her pocket and hurriedly pressed a few buttons with her thumb. The fainted Rufus's Poké Ball was teleported off her belt.
"There we go," she said, stuffing her phone back into her pocket. She moved to place Serenity's Poké Ball in Rufus's old spot, only for Lucky to peck the button on it, causing it to burst open and release the Togekiss. Hearts practically appeared in Lucky's eyes as he beheld Serenity, who trilled softly upon her release.
"Okay, okay," Julia said with a half-giggle. "Having more eyes to watch for trouble can't hurt." As cute as this was, she felt the need to be serious more than ever after what had just happened.
Blade and Shadow exchanged glances. They were both pretty sure Lucky would be too busy staring at Serenity to be an actual pair of helpful eyes.
"Ready to keep going?" Julia asked Juni.
Meanwhile, Serenity noticed something on the ground. Lucky followed her gaze to see a Premier Ball sitting on the ground. He flew over, grabbed it with his talons, and carried it over to Julia, cooing to get her attention.
"Hm? Oh!" Julia held her hands out so Lucky could drop the Ball into her palms. "Thanks, buddy!"
Lucky cooed proudly and glanced over at Serenity, who smiled softly. Lucky considered that a win.

Fetch leaned against one side of Juni, and out of some weird desire to stabilize her, Snowball leaned on the other. Juni managed to stand in place mostly as he watched Julia exchange Pokeballs and released Togekiss (maybe not of her own accord but still). At the ask, Juni gave a nod. “Sounds good,” she answered slowly stepping forward as not to fully shake up Fetch or Snowball. The two righted again and started after her quickly.
As they headed onwards down the path, it was relatively smooth walking for a while. Juni was at least thankful she had a chance to steady her nerves before anything else came about. Fetch seemed fine, but that didn’t stop her worry.
It would be down a little ways when the group came across a man leaned over his hands and knees talking very politely to an Excadrill. “Yes, I would very much appreciate us working together more effectively. It would be most productive for both of us—” he paused as he looked up and saw the two women and threw up a hand. “Hello there!” he greeted warmly. Juni hesitated before raising a hand and waving back. He seemed… at least… kind of nice.
As the man noticed Snowball, however, he brightened and looked back to the Excadrill before quickly coming over. “My sincerest apologies if you’re too busy, but I noticed you have an Alolan Vulpix. They are quite strong and large, and I was wondering if you would use it to battle my Excadrill over there…” he waved over to the Excadrill who hadn’t moved from her spot. “Would you perhaps battle us as a test of strength? I will make it worth your while if you help!”
Juni winced. She was kind of in a hurry, but this man was so freakishly polite. “I… uh… Snow?” she asked looking over her shoulder at Snowball who stared back blankly. “I guess?” she ask-answered right after. “Thank you very much!” the man said before calling over his Excadrill who came a little hesitantly before standing at a good stance between them. A quick few rounds were a quick few rounds. The Vulpix released an Ice Beam that was dodged by a well timed Dig. As the Excadrill came up for the finishing blow of Dig, she was also met with a Disable. A quick Blizzard left the Excadrill half frozen, but she was not out yet and would take a few more hits including an Excasensory to finally go down.
As the hiker returned his Pokemon, he smiled at Juni. “Thank you very much for that battle. You are quite strong.”
Juni immediately blushed and figeted. O-oh. What did she say to that? She managed to get out a “thanks” at most before the hiker moved onwards in the opposite direction of them. Juni turned and watched him continue on half wondering if she had dreamed that encounter just now. Looking back at Julia, though, she was sure she hadn’t. “That was… weird…” she muttered after a moment.
Julia kept close to Juni as they continued on, ready to catch her if necessary. Luckily, Juni seemed steady enough on her feet that that wouldn't be necessary.
A little ways down the road, a hiker called out to them. "Hello!" Julia called, waving back. Blade hissed at her trainer's carelessness after what had just happened, but Serenity let out a soothing trill. This man didn't seem like a bad person, so there was no need to worry, she reasoned.
Julia, expecting Juni to reject the man's proposal, was ready to step in and explain what was going on, but to her surprise, Juni agreed to the battle. She and her team stepped to the side to watch, and Julia cheered Snow on with Lucky chiming in with enthusiastic coos (despite not paying much attention to the battle itself).
When the battle concluded and the hiker moved onward, Julia walked back up to Juni and said, "Good job!" She glanced back at the hiker. "It was kinda weird, wasn't it? But not in the bad way. I just usually expect hikers to be really loud and energetic." She shrugged her shoulders. "Oh, well. Let's go!"
Not long after, Shadow's Rockruff ears perked up at a distant sound, and Julia heard it soon after: It sounded like something solid was being hit repeatedly. That, much to Blade's relief, was enough to make her wary. "What is that?" she asked.
Oh, Lucky knew what to do! With a coo of purpose, he darted off ahead to scout out what the sound was, not even hearing Julia's call for him to wait. Ahead, he discovered the source of the noise: a big rock! Wait, no, it wasn't the rock itself making the noise—something was hitting it! He flew closer to see that that something was a Machop slowly yet steadily punching the boulder before him. He cooed a hello, and the Machop let out a startled cry and hopped back. Lucky tilted his head, but the Machop just kept staring with wide eyes.
There was a trill from behind Lucky, signaling Serenity's approach. Lucky cooed excitedly and began to flit around her, forgetting all about the Machop. Serenity looked curiously toward the Machop as his gaze darted back and forth between the Pidove and the Togekiss. Outnumbered and easily outmatched in the type department, the Machop turned tail and fled. Getting his butt kicked had not been part of his training plan!
"There you two are!" Julia said when she'd caught up with them. "What happened?"
Lucky turned to his trainer and tilted his head. What had happened? He'd already forgotten. Serenity smiled and shook her head, signaling that it was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, Julia seemed to get the message. "Oh, okay! Looks like we're all clear here," she said to Juni.

A soft blush touched Juni’s features as Julia congratulated her. “Uh, ah thanks,” she smiled a little weaker. Battling really wasn’t her forte by any means, but it was nice to see that her Pokemon were up to the challenge. “Right,” she agreed right after heading onwards still with Fetch and Snowball in tow. Fetch did well to stay a bit closer than he had before while Snowball stepped out a bit to look around some more.
As they moved onwards and the sound became ever present, Juni felt her interest pique just a bit. “It sounds like…. boulders mashing….” Despite her clear stated purpose in this trek, Juni couldn’t help but be intrigued. Her interests included things that shaped the earth in other ways so—
Unfortunately, as they caught up with the birds, there didn’t seem to actually be anything there? Just some already broken rocks from the looks of it. “Huh,” Juni murmured stepping forward to inspect them for just a moment at least. It was there that she saw a small collection of items? Had someone left these behind? She was quick to grab and check the Pokeballs, making sure that nothing was in them before deciding they were in good enough shape to pocket.
"Oh, nice find!" Julia exclaimed as Juni unearthed a few Poké Balls. She couldn't help but lean over to see if anything was left, but it looked like the Poké Balls were it. Oh, well! Julia could go treasure hunting later.
"So what do you study, anyway?" Julia asked. "Volcanoes?" Juni had specifically mentioned going to Grumble Volcano...
Speaking of volcanoes, Julia heard something rumbly up ahead that gave her momentary pause. Okay, Grumble Volcano was still definitely far enough away for it to not be that, but she couldn't help but glance at the sky and take in a breath of fresh air to remind herself that, yes, she was outside. She was good out here. So was it just a big Pokémon? But what kind of Pokémon would be making that kind of—
Oh.
A Snorlax toddled along on his stumpy little feet, grabbing handfuls of berries from whatever trees he could and stuffing them into his mouth, leaves and all. "Whooooa..." Julia said. She'd never seen a Snorlax walk around before! It was... actually a lot cuter than she'd expected? She was glad she didn't have to feed it, though, with how fast it was going through those berries.
Then she remembered she still had work to do, so she straightened up and cleared her throat. "I think we'll be okay if we give it enough space." That was how it worked, right? As long as they just let him eat in peace, he'd leave them alone, right?
She watched it grab something out of another tree; from where Julia stood, it looked like a pumpkin. But wait, pumpkins didn't grow in trees, did they? And they were usually more orange than that. And they usually didn't have pink hair-arms—oh, that was a Gourgeist! That explained things. The Pumpkin Pokémon stared at the Snorlax, who stared right back at her. Then the Gourgeist shrieked and began to glow. The Snorlax cried out in alarm before the Gourgeist exploded right in his grasp.
"Look out!" Julia shouted, moving to push Juni farther away from the explosion. They were probably far away enough that it wouldn't affect them, but she couldn't help but want to get away from it, want to get everyone away from it. Serenity let out a concerned chirp and floated back behind Juni to soften any potential falls. Lucky cooed and flitted about in a panic, and the Rockruff Shadow barked with surprise. Blade didn't make any noise, but she did keep an intrigued eye on Julia's actions.
The Snorlax, meanwhile, stood there for a few seconds, staring at his soot-blackened paw, his mouth hanging open in shock. Then, slowly, he topped over and fell onto his back with a resounding thud!
