With a nod, Lynnette turned around and marched onwards, six Pokemon in tow. From the grazing fields of Stantler to the boggy marsh-like zones of Route 2. The fog became so thick that it practically rolled between her fingers when she held up her palms.
Even Starburst's rings were glowing like an eerie beacon for the rest of the team to follow.
Lynn glanced back, assuring herself that everyone was still in tow. Nervous, she went to recall her two youngest members. "Alph, Felds, I think -"
A scream pierced the fog and Lynnette practically bit her tongue. That was no human scream.
Starburst went from a relaxed position to a combat-ready stance. Her eyes shifted, but found nothing in the encompassing mists. Wolfram likewise seemed wide awake despite his battle fatigue setting in.
"What was that?" Lynn said to herself.
Checking out the scream was a bad idea, wasn't it? It was how horror movies ended badly. It was the direction that you went in to find the monster, it was...
Something Lynn had to do.
She muttered a word under her breath and recalled Alpha and Feldspar. If something happened...They were safer in their PokeBalls.
Lynn waded onwards into the fog, her shoes squelching against the bank and her Pokemon hiding in her shadow. "Aren't you guys supposed to be protecting me?" She asked them with a hint of amusement.
She stopped and her entourage bumped into her legs.
Her eyes widened in shock.
An odd noise escaped her mouth as she saw the strangest, most dumbest thing she'd ever seen.
The world's tiniest Croconaw chewing on yet another Wimpod. It flailed and whimpered pathetically as the crocodile monster considered the flavour in its mouth.
Lynn was shaking. Not with fear. Laughter.
"Oh my Arceus! These freaking Wimpods!"
The Croconaw, which was laying down lazily on the bank, rolled his eyes over to Lynnette and non-chalantly dropped the Wimpod into the mud. He grinned toothily.
Lynn frowned. It was small, but it was also strong. Her sense for judging the strength of Pokemon had improved somewhat since the Slowpoke incident. And there was no way she was wanting a Croconaw incident to add to it.
Just because this croc was small didn't mean he was no dice...
And hey, small meant easy to raise. He wouldn't turn out huge like Wolfram eventually would. Yeah. Lynn liked the idea of raising a small croc. He'd make a good sparring partner for Tsunami.
Speaking of...
"Tsu?" She called the Oshawott forward. "Would you like to take on our unexpected guest?"
Tsunami snapped out of her flustered gaze and attempted a confident step-forward. Before now, she hadn't gotten any action. Though she might've been thinking about a different kind of action.
Lynn only raised a confused eyebrow, while Webs huffed and turned his head away from the sight of the two water-types.
Before Lynn could issue the first attack, the Croconaw burst into life and disappeared beneath the waters.
"Damn it!" Lynn swore. "Tsunami, is he still there!?" She said, panicking.
Tsunami ran forwards and peered into the water, only to be slapped in the face by a flash of blue, and for a reptilian face to emerge from the water, smirking. It hadn't been a very hard slap but...
"Alright, Tsunami! Water Gun!" Lynn commanded. A torrent of water blasted the Croconaw in the face, though for obvious reasons he hardly seemed to notice. Tsunami then dived after the Croconaw into the water, causing Lynnette to rush to the water's edge for a hope to see what was happening beneath the waves.
Was this what challenging the Bass Gym would be like? Not having any idea what was going on because the Pokemon would be underwater half the time? Was it going to be a test of trust and independence from the trainer's Pokemon?
At a few intervals in the ensuing underwater battle, Lynn tried her best to instruct Tsunami on the best times to Tackle and Water Gun, or when to dodge, but sometimes she had to wonder if the Oshawott had heard her at all underneath the water.
Then, after a particularly nasty scrap and a hard hit from Croconaw's fist, Tsunami came floating upwards, unconscious.
"Holy shit."
That Croconaw... was tough! It even managed to beat one of the more experienced fighters on her team. Lynn bit her lips. It really only made her want it even more. Still... it was weak now. She could call out Pichu and let him finish the job -
"Ahhhh!"
The ground disappeared beneath her feet and something yanked her into the water. Instantly, she was drenched head to toe in freezing water and floating algae. Wolfram chirped in surprise and flew upwards as Lynn scrambled back to the shore.
While she was busy thinking of her next move, the crafty Croconaw had pulled her into the water! And now he was laughing at her!
"Alright Webs!" She cried, still shivering. "Just... Just... Thundershock!"
Of course, Webs didn't go leaping into the water like Tsunami had. Instead, he charged his attacks and went for the Croconaw whenever he surfaced to attack him. A stray water gun blasted Webs into a tree (why did that keep happening to him) but eventually, Lynn deemed the Croconaw weak enough to warrant the throwing of a Net Ball.
She crossed her fingers as the blue ball flew from her hands to land square on the Croconaw's powerful jaws.
