Fayne propped up the tent as Molokai gathered rocks of various sizes and Palila collected grass, leaves, and twigs to use for the fire. Gagnier, the devious Salandit that could only seem to think about hunger and himself, scampered up a nearby tree and shook free a handful of berries that had only recently become ripe enough to eat. The petrologist grunted and cursed under her breath as she continued to wrestle with the cheap tent. Though she ultimately managed to set it up, something about it didn’t look right. There were odd lumps along one side, and the roof appeared to be leaning. Regardless, it stayed up even when Fayne tested it with a shove.

As the sun began to sip below the horizon, Fayne dug a shallow hole and circled it with the rocks Palila had retrieved. Once satisfied, the young researcher created a small tipi out of the kindling Molokai had gathered. “Light it up,” Fayne muttered, and the bearded-dragon-sized Charmander obliged by turning and resting his flaming tail on a batch of dry grass. Within a matter of seconds, everything in the hole was consumed by fire, illuminating everything in the vicinity. Without saying a word, Fayne stood and walked to a nearby tree where she snapped off some thick branches that would keep the fire going for more than just a few minutes. As she did, Gagnier fell from the canopy above and warbled something at his new trainer before scampering over to the open tent flap. Fayne eyed him cautiously until he disappeared from sight. After a few moments, the petrologist walked back to the fire, tossed a few branches onto it, and placed the remaining fuel a short distance away.

“Who’s hungry?” she asked, a smile slowly creeping across her face as Gagnier, who had been doing something inside the tent, reappeared and began to snarl with approval. Molokai too begged with a series of growls. Fayne smirked and cast a glance toward Palila, who had found a nice tree to rest in. The Natu neither said nor did anything in response, only observed. Fayne turned back to the two lizards before her and reassured them with a quick and casual, “Alright then. Wait here.” With that, she walked to her backpack, which was resting against the truck of a nearby tree, and retrieved some containers of food. “I wasn’t expecting to have so many mouths to feed this early in my journey,” she admitted, though mostly only to herself. “I hope I have enough to last.”
[break][break]
Only once Fayne had gathered four plastic containers did she return to the fire and take a seat. “For Molokai,” she began, popping the lid off the first container to reveal some multi-colored balls that looked like Trix cereal or a random assortment of candies. The Charmander instantly moved, but he wasn’t fast enough. Gagnier had taken the initiative and lunged forward to steal what wasn’t his. Molokai growled and bared his teeth, the flame on his tail growing ever larger the closer the Salandit got to his meal. Before a fight could break out, Fayne gave Gagnier a good, hard pat on the nose. Surprised at the scolding, the black and red lizard recoiled and stared at his trainer. “That’s not for you. This is,” she explained while popping the lid off of a second plastic container. Inside was generic kibble. A more picky Pokemon might have turned up their nose at such an offering, but not Gagnier. His eyes glistened with joy and he dove in without a moment’s hesitation.
[break][break]
Once she was certain Molokai and Gagnier would be okay eating by one another, Fayne popped off the lid to a fruit salad. She silently placed the meal beside her, on the opposite side from the lizards, and gave Palila a single glance before turning to the very last container. Inside were two sandwiches. She grabbed the first one and began to eat. She was halfway through it by the time Palila fluttered down from her branch and accepted the fruit salad with a quiet twitter of approval. Fayne smiled and kept an eye on the road a few yards off. She wasn't expecting to see anyone traveling the road so late in the afternoon, but she could've sworn she heard something or someone approaching.
