"...Drink?" Josh saw Durandal wrap its tassel around Agate's arm, seeing signs of exhaustion from the young boy's body language. "...That explains everything about them!" He recalled to Agate the story of training with his own Honedge, Yagyu, and becoming inexplicably tired. "Now everything makes sense! Now I understand why the Honedge line are so dangerous to raise." Josh's eyes briefly glanced at a Jollaby walking across the road, the wild rapidly turning its gaze in many directions. Perhaps it had been separated from its mother?
"Anytime," Josh remarked as Agate appeared grateful for the quick first aid for his battered Pokémon. "Hey, it's what friends are for, right?" Josh, too, took a moment to catch his breath and patch up Bladestorm with a Potion. It wouldn't be much, but it would at least make the avian comfortable. That, and make it so the reckless Skarmory wouldn't drop to a single attack in battle. "I'm ready, too," Josh concurred with Agate, standing up and climbing atop Blitz again. "Let's go."

"Hmmm? You had no idea?" Agate asked. "Yeah, the Honedge draws life force from other Pokemon by wrapping their tassel around their limb. Or human. In my case, Durandal only takes my stamina... and well... for those who gets too heated in their attempt to use the Honedge..." Agate lifted the sword gently and pointed it at empty space. "they will get their entire soul sucked. They could die. Durandal only takes my stamina because I have taught him to not take too much or take my life force. Riku also taught him to do it... and well... he's doing really well at it."
Agate's eyes too landed on a Fletchling... Nope, He won't get that. He already got Blazewing after all.
"I think I'll put on an incense again, then we'll hit the road," Agate told the older man. "Come to think of it, what sort of Pokemon are you looking here? Charizard?" He asked after pushing button for the incense activation. "Speaking of Charizard, Ragnard is doing fine now. He's seem taking a liking to me like I'm his father, heh."
"I didn't...until now. Now everything makes sense, though. No wonder Yagyu refused to battle except in my right hand. Conniving..." Josh didn't finish that sentence. "Whatever, we're in too deep at this point. But if you can teach Durandal what moderation means, so can I!" He hadn't spent too much time with the Honedge, and didn't feel comfortable doing so until completing combat training of his own. Once he had proven himself to Bladestorm, and Resheph had grown up, that would change. It would certainly make him feel better against all the overly aggressive wild Pokémon in this neck of Arciel. "I certainly wouldn't mind a Charizard," Josh answered Agate's question about what he was searching for. "They're surprisingly easy to raise despite being so strong, and they're surprisingly good racing Pokémon - some of the most well-rounded flying ones out there."
Centered among three dry bushes just off-road was the remnants of a camp. There was quite a bit of brush in a pile, no doubt used for a fire. Must have been someone traveling by night. There were also quite a few empty vials of Pokémon medicine underneath one of the bushes. "...Seriously? Clean up after yourself," Josh couldn't help but mutter. Two of the vials, though, weren't empty - they were filled with Antidote. The seal was even still good! He cleaned up around the former campsite, sticking the filled vials with the rest of his medical supplies and sticking the rest in a pair of baggies, ready to recycle them when he got to the village to the southeast. Though it was only a speck on the horizon, it wasn't that far off, all things considered. Not with how fast his Luxray was.

"Hmmm, so yours must fight on your arm... well, as for Durandal he just stick to me whenever convenient, and prefer to fight by himself most of the time, but... you haven't recovered fully haven't you, Durandal?" Agate asked. The Honedge's tassel fluttered gently, a 'no'. "I see, well, that's OK, you can stay there for a while, just don't sip too much, alright?"
Right after Josh done finding loot in what remains of a campsite, suddenly, Agate saw a woman approaching from other direction. Oi oi, he's using fire incense, not some strange woman calling incense. The woman looked at the campsite remains, then the two of them.
"...That was filthy, you know," she shot an accusatory glance.
"That wasn't ours," Agate answered, perhaps too curtly. The fatigue is making him a bit irritable... but at the same time, this lady suddenly accuses him like that doesn't sit well with him.
"Oh? Really? Then how about this... if I won Pokemon battle against one of you, you will clean that up. Might as well, right?"
"...Fine. What's the format?"
"Two on two. Surely that's fine? Now, as your senior, let me go first!"
The Kimono Lady called out a Clefairy. As for Agate...
"...Say, Josh? You wanna see how I and Durandal fight?" Agate asked. The Honedge resolutely wrapped itself on Agate's arm. He approved of this use. "Well then, I'll show you few tricks."
"I don't know what you're planning but Disarming Voice!"
The Clefairy let out a voice that tugs string of the heart, Agate of course was also affected, but... Without the need of commanding, and because his hand is on the handle... Durandal, through gesture of Agate immediately used Sword Dance. Fashionista Tanika ordered for Copycat, but immediately Agate sprinted forward. Many might think he's slow because he's more muscular than kids of his age, but... that sudden sprint was enough to close the distance. He slid while slashing diagonally with a Fury Cutter! It launched the poor Clefairy few meters behind. In attempt to normalize the situation, Fashinista Tanika ordered the Clefairy to use Charm. It managed to lower Durandal's strength, but at the same time... it was too late to block against the second Fury Cutter.
"That was barbaric!"
"Barbaric?" Agate parroted before spraying Durandal with Potion. "Nah, not really. That's just how I and my Pokemon fight. Together in one mind and soul. Send out your second already. Since a while ago you're sending nothing but accusations at us!"
"Hmph."
The second one was a Jigglypuff. The lady ordered for Rollout! However, instead of dodging as he expected, suddenly Durandal latched on Agate's arm stronger, and countered with Fury Cutter on his own! Both hits collides... and the result was clear. Agate won that one, although the tactic was not something that he expected. Durandal decided to end the match by taking the damage, and then slashing the opponent at point blank range.
"Ever since I caught him at the ruins, she's been like that," Josh answered. "But now that I know what was causing it, it should be a lot easier for both of us to practice. Thanks!" Bladestorm's Poké Ball started shaking again - apparently she still hadn't had enough, noticing a filthy-looking, fat but small Raticate running across the road, turning to head in the direction of the Rangers' outpost as well. Though initially reluctant to let her continue to fight, Josh let the metal menace out to hunt.
The steel predator was quick to shriek; while the Rattata-sized Raticate was quick on its feet, it was little match for the Skarmory's raw speed. She snatched the small Pokémon in her talons, performing a quick loop and even briefly flying upside down before slamming the small wild to the dry, hard ground below. The dark-type collapsed, eyes closed. As Bladestorm opened her mouth to make a meal out of the wild, it suddenly opened its eyes back up and leaped at him, its maw a blur.
This Raticate had fast chompers - almost like a hack saw! The Raticate latched onto the upper part of Bladestorm's beak, bending it to one side with surreal strength. Josh's partner let out a tinny screech, her pained flailing shaking the Raticate loose and into the cutting blades of her Steel Wing. While it was not the cleanest hunt, it got the job done - that Raticate wasn't getting back up any time soon. Neither was Bladestorm - she was hurt, badly. That bent beak would need to be looked at the next time they were at a Pokémon Center. The Luxray rider recalled his flying Pokémon...and she made no effort to get out of the way. Perhaps this injury was enough to convince her to show some restraint...or she had seen enough of Josh's skills that she would be willing to cooperate with him more. Either way, the battle was over, their eastward path clear once more.

So he was caught in a ruins. "I see... that explained it," Agate commented. But to not know the effect of a Ghost Type Pokemon's ability... that in a sense is very dangerous. And now since Durandal has fully recovered, Agate returned the sword to his back. He rotated his sword arm slightly to stave off the weird numb feeling from the sapping of his stamina on that arm.
"Glad to give you a bit of explanation why that happened then," Agate answered. For some reason, with how he sprayed potion to Durandal, he felt like he just like a demon slayer who sprayed alcohol to their sword... but the reality can't be like that... right?
He spotted a Combusken on the way... Oh that's interesting. That one doesn't look like she wanted a fight, so Agate just approached her. "Excuse me, do you have a little bit of time to talk? Yeah, just talking, it's alright. I won't capture you or anything. I just want pointers."
The Combusken looked a bit confused at the notion that he wanted to talk rather than fight, but humored the boy. "See, I have this Torchic, she's the same as you. She's... gentle, verily so. She have problems with going all out, and well... I'm thinking whether it's best if she stays as a tutoring Pokemon rather than actual fighting Pokemon..."
The Combusken looked pensive for a while before talked to Riku. Riku then translated it for Agate.
"Oh, so you think I should talk it out with her huh... ask her what she really wanted to do? Yeah, I think... I'll do that, yeah. What do you think is the most important thing for a Torchic and Combusken, also Blaziken to have?"
The Combusken let out few cheep and clucks before blazing up in fire. But the fire isn't really hot, it's well contained. "...Self control eh. Thank you!"
And thus the team parted with the gentle Combusken.
"I kinda wonder, but aren't you being a bit too harsh with Bladestorm? Granted, I don't think smothering her is the way either, but... I feel like you're letting her tasting the karma... and she ended up like that... I wonder if it won't make her, you know... even less trusting," Agate commented. "Granted, sorry if it sounded too pointed. I'm just worried about the damage she sustained every single time." "Again, it helps me understand him a lot better. Thanks," Josh gratefully replied. Maybe he would be more willing to bring Yagyu on trips across Arciel now? Especially when he was more comfortable fighting atop a Pokémon. He would, of course, use it only on wild Pokémon that attacked him first. As he drifted in and out of thought about the subject, he noticed Riku and Agate appeared to be communicating with a wild Combusken. He wasn't sure how the two were doing it, but they were almost definitely talking to the fire-type in their own way. Josh remembered hearing that while Pokémon couldn't speak the human tongue, particularly intelligent ones could eventually learn to form a link directly with their trainers' minds. Twilight was one of them. Maybe that would be helpful on their trip across Arciel's rougher lands!
After Agate came back from his conversation with the wild, he expressed concerns about how Bladestorm seemed to fight until she was ready to drop. "...Every Skarmory I've known, except for Schera, has been like this. I can tell she's being less reckless, though. It's slow, but she's more...obedient now." Up the middle of the road floated...a Litwick? What was a Pokémon like this doing out here, in the middle of broad daylight? Josh then distinctly remembered Agate's fear of the Litwick line, and directed Blitz to walk in front of the younger traveler, Luxray and rider doing their best to shield Agate's gaze from the floating ghost-type.

"Huh, looks like your mother is the only one without that sort of problem, Randgris. Don't you feel happy?" Agate asked the huge Corvisquire. She merely let out some crowing in response, almost like saying "it's not as if I have choice to be born from what parents"... but immediately trilling melodiously as if saying that yes, she's indeed happy. But even so this is not the time. Looks like there are... sound of snakes? Agate was quick to jump to action, readying his Pokemon to fight. To his surprise, the sound WASN'T from the two snake Pokemons that was on the ground and encircling him. It was from a guy who looked like he just cosplaying as a sorcerer! A black one at it. And... what's that? Huh? He's actually a Scout? He got a scout hat? What on earth is this...?
...By the way this is a blessing in itself as Agate did not see the Litwick at all. He was to preoccupied with the trainer.
"......Can you understand me?"
"Why yessss... I asssk for a battle...."
"...Why are your voice like that?"
"I speaksss to the sssnakes."
Alright, that was something that he'd rather not question further. "Two on two?" Agate asked as he only saw two snakes on the ground. The scout nodded slowly... too slowly for Agate's taste.
"...Very well."
The scout once again hissed, and the first to jump is the Seviper. Agate pulled Durandal from his hilt and faced the Seviper. "...Ho boy, this going to be hard don't you think, Durandal?"
The eye on the sword blinked, as if saying that it's to be expected. But for the meantime they have to fight. Durandal's level is well over six under the Seviper's. But, going by their typing alone, Durandal won by miles. The first attack called immediately, it's a poison fang! Agate quickly met the fang head on. It doesn't damage Durandal. If anything, he looked like he enjoyed the clash! Agate signed for Aerial Ace, which Durandal immediately use by pushing the Seviper away, and struck it with the attack. As Agate thought that another attack will be called, it never came. The snake Pokemon only have poison attacks, which deals no damage against Durandal. It was an easy win overall, albeit quite a long one because Durandal had to use Aerial Ace several times.
The one to be sent next is a Silicobra. Azalea immediately goes to the fore after Agate sheath Durandal back to his sheath. The first to attack was Azalea with Rain Dance. The Silicobra called for Brutal Swing! But Azalea flies higher to dodge it before casting an empowered water pulse! It's not strong enough to defeat it however, and another brutal swing is called, this one hits Azalea, sending her reeling. There's a bit of telltale sign that her health is nearing critical. Not there yet, but very close. Azalea used another Water Pulse, winning Agate the match.
It looked like Josh didn't even need to shield Agate from the passing Litwick - he was far too focused on a trainer battle. Once the ghost-type had passed, he gave his friend ample space to have his impromptu match. He was about to fight his own match, though, whether he wanted to or not. Blitz suddenly stopped and snarled, facing northeast toward the wastes. Not expecting the sudden stop, Josh clutched the reins more tightly. "What is it, Blitz?" he asked his Pokémon. After the Luxray pointed it out, Josh noticed the snarling, and eventually roaring, match with a wild Shinx that seemed to be threatening the Luxray. "Alright, go get 'em Resheph!"
The excited Dratini emerged from her Poké Ball, looping and undulating toward the Shinx that looked ready to brawl. The wild even egged Resheph on, emotions boiling over as she started shaking from how fast she was charging in. Lost in her anger, Resheph wound up a bit too much with her tail, missing the Shinx early and even tripping over the wild's electric fur, finding herself on the hard ground. The Shinx was quick to follow up with digging her sparking paws across the dragon-type's scales.
That was it.
Resheph was furious, her delirium only fueling her anger further as her entire body glowed a royal purple. She flailed with surprising power for a Dratini, her Dragon Rage sending the Shinx flying backward and getting her out of a vulnerable position. The Shinx felt like its skin was on fire, even though there was no burning. It was almost like...a holy fire had been lit at the points Resheph had hit it during the Dragon Rage. Josh couldn't believe how potent the Dratini was even this young - he began to have second thoughts about keeping her a Dragonair for the rest of her life. After a second such exchange, both of them were exhausted, the wild deciding it was better to turn tail.

That... what was that? Agate thought that Resheph is like... a good noodle dragon or something. Does that makes sense? Either way, Agate did not have time to worry about it because... He heard a cry of a Pokemon, and not far from him either! It's right under him, on his leg! Eh? Is... Is that a Jolteon? Agate's eyes immediately sparkles with interest as he saw it! "Aren't you a Jolteon!? Oh Arceus, you're so cute! What are a Jolteon like you doing here with my Fire Incense on!?" Agate can't help but to coo at the cute Jolteon. Eating up the affection from the human, the Jolteon purred happily. Her ears twitching several times.
"Awwww, that's just the cutest. Sorry that I can't stop petting you geee.. you're just the cutest... I felt like I want to hug you close, awww..."
Riku knew that Agate have a soft spot for Jolteon and Flareon alike, so he let him be. An Umbreon would elicit the same response from the boy, but... They're a bit late. They need to haste up.
"Eh? Riku?" Riku tapped Agate's shoulder apparently. He offered the Pokeball. Oh right! "Ummm, do you want to come with me? I think you're a potential Pokemon who could help me in my journey, and plus my heart is healed with you around, so... please? Pretty please?"
Agate offered an Ultra Ball to it. Ultra Ball, go!
p_ The Jolteon was enjoying the pets, but as soon as she saw that PokeBall, she felt betrayed, like you were only trying to trick her into becoming a pet, or worse! Her fur bristles and she lightly nips at your hand before running off at full speed. Well that didn't work.
Josh couldn't help but watch Agate play with a wild Jolteon standing next to a sturdy wooden fence marking the Ranger Outpost's border. The two looked adorable together, though he was a bit concerned about the lack of protection the younger one wore. Jolteon fur was very bristled. In most cases, as long as the fur wasn't rubbed against the grain, it felt fine--soft, even. When startled or provoked, though, the yellow fur stood on end, and boy was it ever sharp.
Josh closed his eyes for a few seconds when he saw Agate hug the wild - that was dangerous! Then again, racing was also dangerous, albeit a different kind of dangerous. Even with all the safety protocols there were, injuries still happened. He opened his eyes, and the Jolteon appeared to be happy! "Awww..." he couldn't help but let out, seeing the two cuddle so close. As soon as the Poké Ball was set, though, the wild fled at top speed. Perhaps he just wanted some attention.
"The way you two were cuddling, I thought you were made for each other! A little surprised it bolted on you like that," Josh remarked as he knocked on the closed gate, awaiting passage into the village. "I should show you Blinky, my racing Jolteon. Think I'll bring her with me if you want to keep traveling with me to Maple!" He slid down Blitz's side and stood next to the content-looking Luxray, who had sniffed out a pair of Leppa Berries at the base of a tree growing next to the gate. Leppa were valuable for long treks such as this one - while they didn't cure wounds, they cured exhaustion after hard battles. Great for Bladestorm, who seemed to give her all in every single fight. What a find!
"mmm," Agate only can answer that, downcast from the rejection by the Jolteon. He might have came too strongly at it, but even then she shouldn't have thought that he's one of those people who would caught her without as much as batting eye or thinking of her of nothing but commodity! Ah well, he guess he should have worked on his charm more next time.
And then that's when he heard the annoying sound of guitar riff.
"Rejected are you boy? That's alright, there's another chance... You know what they say. As fickle as love is you can't help but you yearn it. It hurts, it hurts so bad, yet you can't stop hoping! Now seriously, why don't you fight with me? Broken heart only can be healed by... yes, Pokemon battling!"
"...That was cheesy as heck," Agate commented. "But whatever, I agree... Just please, stop that guitar riff."
"Oh, you don't like it? Psh, fine. Alright, one against one, deal?"
"Sounds good. Fang, go for it."
The Luxio grinned and gone to the fore. Facing her is a Cosplay Pikachu... huh! "...That's interesting, a Cosplaying Pikachu."
"Oh, first time seeing Cosplaying Pikachu? I don't wonder. They're quite the exotic, smart beings you know? Fashion of highest kind, coupled with soul that screams "I live to express my tune"! Don't you think they're the best?"
"...Er, yeah, sure, let's go with that," Agate muttered.
The two began their fight. Fang used Bite, while the Pikachu used Volt Tackle! Fang used the moment the Pikachu about to hit her and strike with the bite. It hurts when the Pikachu impacted with her fangs, but even so it wasn't enough to bring her down! The Pikachu, still dangling on her mouth attempted to use Electro Ball at point blank range toward Fang! In response, she dropped the Pikachu, and attacked with her own Spark. The attack clashed and exploded, sending two fighters to opposite end. However, Fang was faster to recover, and immediately finished the fight with another bite!
"Fang, good job!" Agate praised. the Luxio purred, but at the same time she chittered at her opponent, praising her for her brave tactics.
"So how are you feeling, a bit refreshed?" the guitarist asked.
"Not exactly... but thanks I guess."
"Rejection hurts, it'll stay like that for a while, but for the meantime you should just try to recover and do a lot of positive thing, that's all I'll say!"
With that, Agate parted with the opposing Trainer. And looks like they're closing to Outpost Alpha now.
"I think our journey today is done for the meantime! I'm going to rest on the town, get some air taxi back to Fuji just in case...Anyway, thanks for today, Josh! That was helpful! Hope to see you again later!" [exit]
