Somewhere early along the road of Route 1, Aster, her Snivy, her Mareep, and her Mudkip were walking along in companionable silence. They were on their way home, having decided to walk all the way back from Birch City back to their ranch in Fuji. Aster had thought it would be a good bonding experience for herself and her teammate Pokemon, a good bonding experience between her Pokemon and each other, and an excellent opportunity to capture more Pokemon to bring back to the farm to raise, and to help out around the place with planting, harvesting, and protection from wild Pokemon and insects.
Ivy was, as she almost always wound up, seated upon Aster's head. The tiny Snivy was mostly chill, but knew how to keep Aster out of trouble and on the path. Clover, the stubborn Mareep, trotted along to Aster's left, keeping an eye on their surroundings like a fluffy bodyguard, making sure no harm would come to her trainer or companions. Lily, the Mudkip on Aster's right, was looking around as well, but for puddles rather than danger. The playful mudfish loved to splash in water and mud, and was hoping to find a frozen puddle especially, but in this particular weather that would be impossible. Lily didn't know that, and so her hopes were kept up.

"Oh! You've got a Snivy too!" An excited voice rang out to Aster, and she turned to see a trainer in a green getup running towards her, holding out a Poke Ball. "We should have a Snivy battle!" she rang out, not seeming ready to take 'no' for an answer. Aster smiled, giving her little Ivy a hand-taxi to hop onto, then placing the snake on the ground.
The other trainer released her own Pokemon, a much larger Snivy, probably more in the range of the size Snivy should normally be. "This is my Snivy! He just hatched last week, one of the first Pokemon I've bred myself!" Ivy wouldn't let herself be intimidated, however; by her quick assessment and a nod to Aster, she pointed out that she could still easily defeat this other grass Pokemon.
"Yeah, we can battle, o' course! Ives, can y' go a li'l easy? This Snivy's just a baby, y'hear?" Ivy reluctantly gave another nod. The other Snivy would have a bit of a size advantage, naturally, but she knew she was stronger and faster.
With little more warning, the battle began, and true to her word Ivy let the young Snivy go first. He began with a Tackle, rushing at Ivy and slamming into her for some damage. She didn't try to move out of the way. Aster said, "Try a Wrap attack, Ives," and so Ivy did that, creating some vines and snagging her opponent in them for minimal damage. He remained snagged, however hard he struggled.
"Great job Snivy! Now use.. er.. Tackle again!" The bigger Snivy tripped on a vine, but caught himself and attacked again, before tripping a second time and getting squeezed for his trouble.
"Ivy, go ahead and use Tackle yerself." Aster was enjoying having another trainer to battle, but this fight was going to be so easy with how strong Ivy had gotten in their travels already. Ivy gladly slammed her whole body into the tangled-up Snivy, who gave an upset cry and tried to Tackle her back, only to fall again. Ivy finished off the fight with a Vine Whip, using the vines wrapped around the other Pokemon to slap him once or twice, causing him to cry out again.
"Alright, alright, you win..." mumbled the trainer, returning her Snivy to his ball. "You're pretty strong!" The trainer remarked, clutching her Poke Ball close.
Ivy returned to Aster, holding up her arms to ask to be picked up again. "Ah told ya t' go easy, Ives.." muttered Aster, placing the snake back onto her head. Ivy was unconcerned, curling up again comfortably in Aster's hair.

With the other trainer sent packing, Aster kept walking and came across a curious sight: a fountain in the middle of a little pond by the side of the road. She stared at it from afar, then got a little closer, but she didn't exactly want to hop into the water in this chill so she just stayed by the edge, watching, squinting at the surface to see if she could figure out what was causing it. Suddenly, a Panpour popped out, spraying water from its head and solving the mystery.
Clover stepped forward, challenging the Panpour with a roar of a bleat, already sparking to ready a move. The wild Pokemon assessed his challenger, then hopped on out of the water to accept the challenge, allowing Clover the first move. Aster nodded at her Pokemon, letting Clover know that she was free to do what she wanted like she liked to do.
The Mareep unleashed her stored energy in a Thunder Wave attack, zapping the wild Panpour with a controlled amount of electricity meant to Paralyze rather than damage outright. She was successful, and the monkey Pokemon was slowed significantly, but still manage to use Water Gun on Clover, who was struck head-on. Her soaked wool sparked and fizzled, then sparked stronger as she sent a Thunder Shock at the wild Pokemon. It was strong against the Water-type and seemed to do quite a bit of damage; it also seemed that he couldn't fight back due to Paralyzation, for the moment, so she took advantage of the time and Charged herself up for another strike. After he loosened up a bit, the wild Panpour attacked again, using Bite this time and taking a big chunk out of Clover's health.
Seeing that Clover wasn't doing as well as she could be, Rafflesia decided to step in, nudging the Mareep out of the way. Clover reluctantly returned to Aster's side, and Rafflesia finished off the fight by dodging another Bite attack and using Magical Leaf to subdue the wild Pokemon.
The wild Panpour fled, defeated, and Rafflesia moved back to Aster's side cheerfully, patting Clover on the head with a vine.

A very round, blue Pokemon appeared out of a river on the opposite side of the route. Its tail floated to the surface first, then its whole body surfaced, looking around cautiously. It spotted Aster, squinted in her direction, then deemed her 'not a threat', and waved at her, squeaking out a greeting.
"Oh, hey there little guy!" Aster called, waving back. From this distance, she couldn't tell what the Pokemon was, but when it started to approach she realized it was a Johto native, a Marill! She loved those little round guys; they didn't show up near her moms' property super often, but they were generally pretty friendly even in the wild and would hang around doing tricks for treats on occasion. She wondered if this one would do that too? She didn't have any berries on her, but she dug around in her bag and found some crackers she'd been hanging onto, then offered them to the wild Pokemon when it came close enough.
The Marill seemed interested in the crackers; it stared at them for a few moments, mouth watering, then did a little hop in place, holding out its little paws for a cracker. Aster handed it one and watched it nibble the cracker down in only milliseconds, then sniff around for more. She offered another one, not asking for a trick, just putting it right into the Pokemon's hands, and it scarfed down the second, third, fifth crackers just as fast as the first one.
"Aw, you're so cute! And hungry. Y' wanna come back home with us? We gotta nice farm, you could help us out a lot!" She went back into her bag, having given all of her crackers to the wild Marill, and pulled out a Poke Ball, offering it with a friendly smile.

The Marill looked to see if Aster had anymore food; seeing none, and smelling no more after a good sniff, it gave another, more cheeky wave, and made a dramatic hop back into the water, splashing the trainer and giving her her answer. "Ah, that's alright. Bye, little fella!" Aster waved before it disappeared underwater again, but it didn't seem to care. She wasn't super pleased with being splashed, but the sun was out and she'd dry before long.
Rafflesia seemed annoyed at the wild Pokemon, and voiced his opinion in a grumbling noise. "Hey now, Raff, it's alright. Some folks jus' want some food and then go on their way, that's alright. Jus' cause I fed 'er don't mean she's obligated t' come home with us." Lily looked like she was raring to hop into the pond herself, so Aster snatched her up before she could. "I don't need ya gettin' lost now, little Lily. You gotta stick wi' us or I gotta put ya back in yer ball, okay?"
The Mudkip reluctantly agreed, and Aster placed her back on the ground. They kept on walking. Aster decided while they walked to try a new item that she'd found at the store before they'd left town, an Incense. She took it out and used the included match to light it up, swinging it about a little, then when Rafflesia showed his vines and offered, handed it to him to carry.

Out of the grass, an unusual creature ventured forward. It looked like a mass of blue vines with red shoes and huge eyes in a hidden face. Aster had never seen this one before; they were pretty rare back home, but she found out from the Pokedex app, which she had to check to identify the wild Pokemon, that this was a Tangela. A Grass-type, like she'd hoped! The Incense seemed to be working just as intended.
Rafflesia looked at the Pokemon, then up at his trainer, and made a sound and a vine motion to tell her to take the Incense back, likely intending to battle it. "Oh yeah, go ahead Raff. Be careful though, it doesn't look like a pushover!" Aster took the item from her Pokemon and let him bound forward, challenging the viney creature.
The Tangela looked confused, then angry. It lashed out, using Confusion first, then hitting Rafflesia with a Vine Whip while he was distracted and hurt by the first move. Rafflesia countered by attempting a Leech Seed, which failed, earning him another smack with Vine Whip. He decided to spam Magical Leaf back at the wild Pokemon, which didn't do much damage all at once, but would, hopefully, steadily sap the viney beast's health. No such luck, though; the Tangela resisted the Magical Leafs and used Confusion in return, back and forthing this way for a few moments meant that poor Rafflesia was becoming weaker by the minute. Aster frowned; she couldn't let her Pokemon get hurt!
"Raff, you're gonna have t' come back, this is too much fer ya!" The Bulbasaur was stubborn and didn't want to return, but Aster pulled out his Poke Ball and didn't give him another choice. She couldn't let him get hurt. Instead, to combat the Tangela, she decided to send out Iris, the Murkrow. Appearing in a flash of light, Iris hit the wild Pokemon with a Peck first, then dodged his Vine Whip and struck with an Astonish, giving her a free move while he flinched to land another Peck attack. With those strong moves, and the bit of health Rafflesia had taken out of him, the Tangela was looking mighty tired.
Aster threw a Poke Ball before it could make any more moves, which seemed somewhat unfair, but she wanted to keep this guy, and he had already done a number on poor Rafflesia.

Another wild Pokemon showed up as soon as Aster stooped to pick up the Poke Ball containing her new Tangela. A bright pink and white bird that appeared to be sparkling popped out of the grass and attacked Iris, starting off by smacking her with a wing in a Pound attack. Caught fully off-guard, Iris went crashing to the ground.
"Iris, are you okay? D'ya want me to swap y' out?" Aster asked, but Iris screeched and attacked the newcomer, either ignoring or not hearing her trainer. She struck with a Pursuit, doing quite a bit of damage, which was retaliated with a Peck from the wild Pokemon. Aster took a moment to check her Pokedex for this new Pokemon. It was an Oricorio, but it appeared to be a different color than the Pokedex indicated. She found out with a quick bit of research that this Pokemon came in a few varieties and could change between them by eating a certain food, Nectar, but this one was still an unusual color.
"Iris, can y' weaken it wi'out knocking it out?" Iris seemed to listen to that, at least, and readied an Astonish, also seeming to harm the wild Pokemon quite a bit. She crowed a challenge, goading the wild Pokemon to attack again, this time with Growl and then Peck.
The pair of birds went back and forth with this until both of them appeared to be very, very tired. Aster threw a Poke Ball, hoping she could catch this unusual bird.

The pink and white Oricorio busted out of the ball, then up and fled before Aster could do much about it. "Drat!"
Iris flew back to Aster's shoulder after chasing the Oricorio a very short distance, before it got too far away too fast, and covered her beak in shame. "Nah, Iris, don' feel bad, it's all good. It obviously weren't meant t' be, right?" Iris looked at her trainer, still feeling bad for letting the wild Pokemon get away so easy, but gave a little noise of agreement too.
"We'll find somethin' better, ahm sure!"
As if on cue, the grass nearby gave a shake, and Aster swung her incense a bit to attract whatever it was out. A tiny round creature waddled out, making a weird chirpy cry. Checking her 'dex, Aster found that it was a grass Pokemon called Shroomish, which was native to the tropical Hoenn region and had some pretty powerful defenses against predation and other Shroomish.
Iris looked overjoyed to have something to hit to make up for the previous failure, and she swooped down to begin the fight with a powerful Peck. The Shroomish fell down, surprised, then quickly stood back up and fought back with Stun Spore, pulling Iris to the ground temporarily as the spores stiffened up her muscles. She was able to reach the wild Pokemon with her beak still, and retaliated with Astonish to try to give herself an opening to get back into the air, but the Shroomish did not flinch, instead shooting a Leech Seed at Iris. Wide-eyed, Iris managed to tip herself over and out of the way, then shook herself and launched back into the air, dive-bombing the Shroomish with a Pursuit as it waddled about, trying to hit her with another Leech Seed. It took hold this time, wrapping Iris with thin, leafy vines that seemed to pulse with life and pull her life force right out of her.
"Iris, honey, use Peck a couple o' times; this is a Grass-type, remember?" Iris seemed to realize that she wasn't being strategic and agreed, diving back at the Shroomish to use Peck and doing quite a bit of damage. Though her strength was sapped by the Leech vines, and the Shroomish seemed to gain back some of the drained vitality, the Peck attack was strong enough that the wild Pokemon was still getting weaker. It pulled off using Tackle, nearly knocking Iris down out of the air again, but she Pecked at it again and weakened it severely. Before the Leech Seed could sap more of Iris's energy, Aster tossed a Poke Ball at the mushroom creature.

Aster decided to try a new Poke Ball she had found to see how that worked out for her. She dug through her stuff looking for it and finally produced what she'd been looking for: a Timer Ball. Without waiting around for the Shroomish to decide to flee after all or for her Pokemon to attack again, Aster tossed the Timer Ball at the wild Pokemon.
Iris flitted back to Aster's shoulder to watch the ball shake, also hoping for it to be caught. She was tired and wanted to rest for a bit, so even if this wild Pokemon was still free and raring to fight, she'd prefer to be switched out for someone else for now. Maybe Lily would like to give it a shot, she mused. Aster stared at the ball, face scrunched up a bit in determination, as if she thought staring hard enough might make the Pokemon stay in the ball more.

The scent of the grass incense was dwindling down to almost nothing, but one last Pokemon appeared seeking out the grassy smell: a Servine walked out of the tall grass and sized Aster up. She was huge, compared to Ivy, considering how tiny Ivy was and the fact that this was an evolution of the little Grass-type. Aster was amazed; she knew how rare this Pokemon was right away, but wasn't sure she needed a second one, since her little Ivy would likely evolve at some point herself. She decided to fight it, try a capture, and see where the winds took them.
"Hi there, you lookin' for a battle?" Aster asked the wild Pokemon respectfully. It gave her a once-over, then shrugged, but took on a fighting stance all the same. Aster thought for a few moments, then decided to toss a particular Poke Ball out. She knew that, as much as Ivy would probably want to fight this Servine, this wild Pokemon was much stronger and would probably win, knocking Ivy's ego down quite a few pegs, which wasn't going to be any good for her right now. She was a little smug, but she was also fairly strong and usually knew when to back down, but this Pokemon would be too much for her, so the Pokemon that burst from the ball was Azalea, the Scizor.
The bright red bug Pokemon looked at his opponent and took on a similar stance, ready to fight his hardest. The Servine was very fast and began the fight with Growth. "Try an Agility, then False Swipe, Azalea." Aster hadn't worked with the Scizor much yet, aside from playing games with all of her Pokemon together once or twice, so she wasn't sure if he could battle without direction yet. The bright red bug raised his own Speed, then was able to easily hit the Servine with the False Swipe before it could react. When it did, the Servine used Leech Seed, covering Azalea with green, pulsing vines that started to instantly sap his strength.
"Try an' shake that off an' use Bullet Punch!" The Scizor, try as he might, could not shake off the vines, but still came at the Servine with the attack, slamming steel-hard fists into the snake. He was able to strike with the attack twice thanks to his speed boost before the Servine was able to fight back again, but more of his strength was sapped by the Leech Seed, too.
Servine retaliated with a Leaf Tornado, flinging Azalea away before he could ready another attack, then used Growth again while he was knocked away. The Servine seemed to be recovering a lot of health from its sapping vines, and somehow Azalea was still doing alright.
"Keep it up wi' those Bullet Punches, Azalea! You'll get 'em." Azalea leaped forward, buzzing his wings, and used Bullet Punch again, then Agility. His foe couldn't keep up, and so he used Agility again to bring his speed as high as he knew how to, and he managed to deliver yet another Bullet Punch before he was snagged by a Vine Whip as the Servine tried to hold him in one place. The Leech Seed sapped him again, but he broke free of the Vine Whip after taking just a little damage and used False Swipe again. The Servine was finally looking tired, and Aster was tired of watching her Pokemon move so dizzyingly fast around his foe, so she decided now was the time to throw a Poke Ball.
