The recent UB sightings were enough to spike anyone’s nerves, and Atty saw that by the sheer numbers of patients that poured into his office only a day after the events transpired. Many that he hadn’t seen in quite some time were suddenly dialing in to make the fastest appointments they could, and he had been worked to the bone all week. Now in an effort to calm his own nerves, he was taking a break, unplugging as much as he could afford to, and doing some fishing.
Standing on the side of the fishing boat, Atty stared into the blur of blue beyond his shades. He had a mental picture of what he was looking at. He could reconstruct the details from the blur with some effort, but right then, he allowed himself not to think about that. Just take it in. Slow breaths. Yeah. Looking sideways to where a rod, reel, and tackle box rested, Atty sighed a little softly.
Atty kind of wished one of the crew was around to help him feel over what he needed to before actually getting started, but he couldn’t blame anyone for not entirely realizing he was blind. He had a cane with him and a Lycanroc (who now lay in the shadow of one of the many fishing chairs around) with a harness, but it was easy to miss what his actual disability was. In many ways, though, Atty preferred that. Not…. Right now, though. Slowly bending over, he started to feel first the box’s clasp before opening it and carefully going around. Now… did he remember how to do this?
Posts must be a minimum of 100 words to count as a post. You must post at least five (5) times. You must successfully pass at least one roll to earn rewards. Your Fishing Skill can help you succeed on rolls. Specifics of the task: You must roll a 95 or higher (after modifiers) to catch the Golden Magikarp. You cannot "catch"-catch the Magikarp; he is a city treasure after all! You can catch other Pokemon fished up, but you will receive less job rewards if you do. See: Rewards
25 Pen per fish successfully caught and turned in (i.e. not captured to keep), up to a maximum of 150 Pen, and +2 Fishing. If you catch the Golden Magikarp, you will receive an additional 150 Pen and +2 more Fishing. For each interval of posts past the minimum (10, 15, etc), you will receive 3 Rare Candies.
Even a woman so invested in her business as Maeve McRoy needed a bit of peace when the world was growing tense. It helped that she had picked an activity that she was interested in, even if she did not have much of a skill in it. Learning something new would be fun.
Strolling along the side of the boat--with Attie trotting along behind her, holding the rod in her vines--Maeve looked for a chair for herself, coming to find a man already in a spot with his line in the water. Maeve glanced at her own loaned items and, for a moment, debated if she wanted to try her luck at doing this completely on her own, or asking for some manner of help. But let it never be said that Maeve was too proud--or too shy--to for aid, especially when a sharp object was involved. There didn't seem to be any crewmen around though, so... "Excuse me," she spoke in her reserved, professional tone more out of habit than on purpose, "Is this seat besides you open?"
"I don't want to bother you, but I would prefer to be near another person while trying to bait my hook, just in case." There was a little lift to her voice, a trace of humor, before she stepped to take her seat. Only then did she spot the brilliantly golden coat of the Lycanroc by his side. That, and the harness around his body. A service Pokemon? Interesting. And quite a magnificent specimen as well. "Ah, hello to you as well. Goodness your coat is magnificent," Maeve hummed softly and took a seat, "I haven't seen many Alolan Pokemon in this region yet. She's lovely." Attie set the rod next to Maeve before trotting up to Topaz and greeting her with a trilling "Twiiiiig!". Maeve chuckled and nudged her back towards her feet.
It would be impolite to ask what she was specifically trained to help with. Pokemon could be trained for all sorts of things--therapy, help with seeing or hearing, or even fetching items for those who had difficulty with their motor skills. She'd done a bit of looking into them when preparing her own shop--after all, she wanted to provide Pokemon to more than just trainers, if there was a market to do so. And it was helping those in need.
Maeve carefully began to put bait on her hook without harming herself. She had a bit of difficulty, but managed not to pierce her thumb in the process. The other fellow though...was he alright there? "Pardon, again, but if you need any help, I may not be most professional fisherman, but I can follow directions quite well. Where are my manners--I'm Maeve McRoy. It's a pleasure to meet you...?"
She left her introduction hanging for him to catch, should he choose to. Hopefully she was not coming across as too forward. It would just be a shame to not try to make polite conversation with the only other person on this side of the boat. And she was curious about his Lycanroc. She looked so well groomed and healthy. Impressive.
You feel something on the line! You give it a tug, and feel a strong amount of resistance on the other end. It almost feels like another person is pulling on the... oh.

Hm? Atticus paused as he dug through the box to look up in the direction of the voice. “Sure, it’s free,” he answered making a small gesture to ….. kind of in that general direction of where he assumed the chair was now. The explanation that followed earned a small “Ah….” back before an even smaller snort. He wasn’t sure he could do much aside from call for help, but that was better than nothing in this case.
Topaz lifted up her head to inspect the woman and took in a deep breath of scent. Hm, yes, she supped this woman was alright. A soft low note escaped from her in a return greeting. Her eyes then dropped to the Turtwig, and she leaned a little to press her nose up against the small fry. Yes, she liked this one too, she supposed. Atticus glanced to Topaz and smiled a bit softer at the compliments towards her. “Her name’s Topaz, mine is Atticus,” he said feeling over the hook in his hand and assessing this was the one he wanted.
After that, though, Atty found himself focusing on the lure, hook and rod and reel, and bait. Chewing the inside of his mouth again, he was pretty sure he could feel over where he needed to put what but— Atticus froze briefly at the woman’s, Maeve’s, words. “Ah, I’d appreciate that, it’s been a while since I’ve done this and…” Breath in, breath out. Atticus half smiled. “I could actually see last time I did this…” he snorted a little at that.
Once the bait was hooked on the line, Atty had a much easier time throwing out the reel. Muscle memory made some things much easier than others. “So, Maeve, was it? What brings you out today?” Atticus asked. He felt… a strange tug. That was pretty fast. Focusing a little more on reeling it in, he shifted a bit in his seat now. “Uhmph…. Think I hooked a Magikarp…” Or some other fighting fish.
Attie refused to be nudged! In fact, she was getting nuzzled by a nice wet snoot, so she was more than content to stay exactly where she was, thank you very much! Maeve gave her a small sigh through up-curved lips, which then turned into a little chuckle at the utter coincidence of the man's name. "Well, Atticus, I apologize ahead of time for any confusion, but my Turtwig here is named Attie. So if you hear me scolding you with an affectionate nickname, I promise it is directed at her." Attie looked up at Atticus, not quite getting why her name was being said a lot, then shrugged and went back to trying to get Topaz to play with her. Or just nuzzle more. Either or was good.
Maeve's offer for aid was accepted, and once she had her own line baited she did the same for him, and hoped she did a well enough job at it. From his words, and Topaz's harness, she could gather that he was visually impaired. Was he in an accident, or was it genetic? For how long had it been affecting him? Neither of those questions were any of her business, and, as such, she wouldn't ask them. She at least managed to catch herself before she said something like "Oh, I see" in response. That...would have been in poor taste.
"Don't thank me until I know if I've done it right or not--I haven't been fishing ever before, though I have seen some people do it." Castelia had its piers and its boats, but not many of them were fishing vessels but rather luxury liners or transport ships, and the one pier set aside for foreign Pokemon trade. She missed that spot more than any of the other piers. Maeve cast her line into the water. "I was looking to try something new, and relax a little. I've been getting scolded for working to hard lately," she gave a small glance down at Attie, who was still very distracted by Topaz, "So it felt like a good compromise."
A sharp tug made Maeve's spine straigthen, and she reeled in her line at nearly the same moment Atticus did his own. When they came up tangled together, she felt a faint heat in her cheeks and the tips of her ears, and sighed again, softer this time, and began to untangle the lines. "No...I, ah, apologize, it looks like our lines tangled. I will try to cast at a better angle. Again, I'm...very sorry."
Taking care to angle her line away from Atticus' own, she cast out again, still faintly red around her ears. That was not a good start to this, not at all. Even if she was a beginner, that was embarrassing.
