Ruaidri was lost. Well, he knew where he was, he'd only just made his way out of Fuji town, leaving his home for the first time in... quite a while. Back when he was doing more unsavory things for a living he'd been used to travelling, but he'd also had the backup of his gang's pokémon back then.
Now he only really had a Bulbasaur, a small one at that. He rolled the ball containing the pokémon in his hand, as though contemplating something, before he released the pokémon contained within.
"Saur!" came the hoarse cry of the green little pokémon, his eyes blinking in the bright sunlight. After a moment where he tried to orient himself he turned towards the red-haired man who stood looking down at him.
Their eyes met and they stood there, sizing one another up. Ruaidri knelt down to get more level with his pokémon.
"Hey there," he looked like he had something he wanted to communicate, but also like he was a bit uncomfortable with something. In truth, the way he'd lived before he hadn't bonded much with pokémon. His former gang had a pool of pokémon for its members to use, but they were tools and got passed around to cover the needs of the group. It didn't make sense to bond, you might only work together on a single job and then part ways. Ruaidri didn't think he'd worked with this Bulbasaur, but it was what they'd allowed him to take with him when he went back home for his parent's funeral.
He hadn't returned since, nor did he plan on doing so now.
Traditionally there were repercussions for leaving and certainly if you took a pokémon as well. Fortunately for Ruaidri this Bulbasaur was smaller than usual, which probably made it less valued and seen as too weak to bother with. It was why he'd gotten to take it with him back when he left. The second thing that worked in his favour was the chaos caused by the Ultra Beasts, it had made the group lose track of him. After a time of mourning he'd put both resources and time into ensuring he wouldn't be found out by any past acquaintances.
He took a deep breath and let it out in a sigh before continuing. "Think we can work together?" was what he finally said. It might look a bit silly with the big man crouched down before a small Bulbasaur, but the look in Ruaidri's eyes was very serious and his words were genuine.
"Saur, bulba!" came the response, along with a small nod.
That was... a good sign, right?
"Alright then! Let's get along..." he blinked, trailing off. "I, uh, I haven't given you a name yet, have I?" he gave a sheepish smile which looked out of place on him. It was sad to think that he really hadn't even given the little guy a name...
"How about... Lero?" It felt odd to him, to give a name to a living thing. Then again, considering the two eggs he carried with him he supposed he would need to get used to that. There were many things he needed to start getting used to if this was truly the path he wanted to walk from now on.
He looked at the Bulbasaur expectantly, gauging his response to the suggested name. Surprisingly he felt anxious; he really wanted the little guy to like the name he realised.
Relief flooded him as the Bulbasaur nodded. Lero, he reminded himself.
With that over with, he stood up and looked towards the road. He was lost in life, but he figured that if he took the time to travel, meet new pokémon, see new things and get new experiences under his belt then maybe he could find his way. As for the literal path forward he wasn't lost on that path. He had decided to walk towards.
Before he started walking, however, he decided to check on the eggs. One of them, a pinkish one a family friend had informed him she'd bred specifically for him but which had taken a long time to make its way over to him. It was placed in an incubator to speed up its hatching. As he felt along the side of the egg there was... movement?
His heart was racing now!
Did this mean it wasn't long until the egg would hatch? That must be what it meant, right? He checked the other egg in his possession. Running his hands along it he felt nothing much at all. Maybe something small, but not at all like the pink one.
"I think we might get to meet a new friend soon," he said, half to himself and half for the benefit of Lero, who in turn nodded gravely, like a big brother preparing to take responsibility for a younger sibling.
So... what now? Should he just wait around here, hoping it would hatch right then and there? Or should he start walking?
As he considered his options, his eyes went from the egg, to Lero, to the road and then back to the egg again. Once again those hands found their way to his hair, a bit of a nervous or stressed tick of his, one which he was only half aware of himself.
Okay, get yourself together. You don't know for sure how long it will take, you could be left sitting around here for days, is that what you want? The inner dialogue had a scolding tone to it.
With that decided, he rose from his crouching position, putting one of the eggs away carefully and looking at the incubator. He should really put that away as well, but he just couldn't get himself to do it.
And so it was that a tall, red-haired man with a small Bulbasaur could be seen walking down the road towards Ash city, the man carrying an incubator with a pink egg in his arms, holding it protectively. Whatever lay ahead of them now... well, it was unknown, but they would still face it together!

The man and his Bulbasaur walked in silence for a moment, both of them enjoying the gentle rays of the sun. Lero in particular took pleasure in the sunlight, being that he was a grass-type.
Perhaps it would have been good to spend more time bonding, somehow, but Ruaidri wasn't particularly sure how he'd go about it. Talking, perhaps? But he really didn't know what to say. In fact, the silence was quite nice in his opinion.
If Lero minded he didn't show it, instead simply trudging along at the human's side. His short legs worked hard to keep pace, but he was determined not to fall behind and show his determination now that they were finally doing something!
They would have likely just continued walking for a while longer, but new noises from the egg made Ruaidri stop dead in his tracks. Startled, he crouched down and set the incubator on the ground, watching it intently as the movements coming from the egg seemed to intensify.
Apparently he hadn't been too off about the egg being about to hatch soon!
There was a rush of excitement and adrenaline, as well as some anxiety. He'd never been around for an egg hatching before! Well, at least he'd never been alone for it before. Back when he was a kid, he'd been around when his mother had taken care of such things, but he hadn't paid a lot of attention to her, only to the egg and the little critters coming out of them.
"Am I... supposed to do something?" he asked out loud, even though Lero was the only one around as far as he knew and the Bulbasaur seemed unlikely to hold the answers to such a question. Even if Lero DID hold the answers it wasn't like he could communicate it.
In either case, the Bulbasaur didn't say anything, instead he just inched closer to the incubator as well, huddling close to it alongside his human partner. The focus from the two of them was intense and complete.
The sun seemed to hide behind the clouds for a bit.
Perhaps if the two of them hadn't been quite so entranced by the egg they might have noticed something earlier. Something rather large, closing in on them.
Ruaidri and Lero both seemed to realise at the same time that the cloud hadn't seemed to move quite like a cloud. Both of them craned their neck to look back, and looming over them was, without a shadow of doubt, the largest Geodude either of them had ever seen.
Now, Ruaidri wasn't the most cowardly man around. Perhaps not the bravest either. But this... there was no denying the instant shock of fear that shot through his body.
Man and pokémon alike turned to face the Geodude.
A million possible actions went through his brain at once, but the only reasonable course of action seemed to be to run and hope for the best, but then... what about the egg? Would it be okay if he just grabbed the incubator and booked it as fast as his legs could carry him? He honestly didn't know, and he didn't want to risk the life that was now his most tangible and emotional connection to his deceased mother.
So what, then? Would he have Lero fight? Even without looking at him, the image of the small Bulbasaur trying to face off against the giant before them invited nothing but more dread.
Raising his hands in a gesture intended to placate he shifted himself to be between the stranger of a pokémon they had encountered and the incubator containing his precious egg. "Hey there," he said in the softest voice he could muster, given the circumstances.
Lero, on the other hand, was tense. If there was to be any fighting, he wanted to protect both the red-haired human and the eggs! Even so, he made no move, as he felt a calming hand placed on his side. Apparently Ruaidri was hoping to get through this without having to fight... still, he'd be ready if it didn't work out!
The sharp amber eyes of the human was trained on the Geodude, watchful for any signs of hostile movement and ready to move, mentally going through the things he'd need to do in that case. For now, though, he was watching.
Hey, who knows! Maybe it'd turn out to be friendly. Maybe it needed help (though what he could do to aid was another matter entirely) or maybe it was just passing by.
The Geodude looked back at Ruaidri with interest. It didn't seem hostile, just curious and perhaps a little shy. A low rumble of his own was given in greeting before the light from the egg caught his eyes. Was it going to hatch soon? How exciting!

Rauidri had enough time to catch the curiosity present in the Geodude and decide it probably wasn't a threat, in spite of its imposing size. Something else quickly drew his attention however.
A light coming from behind him.
Feeling more at ease around the behemoth of a Geodude, he quickly turned around, just in time to catch the egg starting to hatch! Mouth hanging slightly open, he leaned in close, Lero and him both holding their breath in anticipation.
Only when the light subsided and soft mewling sounds, along with pink moving limbs revealed themselves did they start breathing again.
If the Geodude had been the biggest one Ruaidri had ever seen, then the little Skitty that had emerged from the egg was without a doubt the smallest one he's ever seen.
Reaching out carefully and slowly, hands trembling slightly, he picked up the new little life, lifting it up closer to his face. Their eyes met and he felt this odd rumbling or vibration in his hands. It was purring! His face twisted up as he fought the tears that threatened to well up in his eyes. He didn't even particularly know why, it was just an intensely emotional moment and the little Skitty was so cute, and it was purring!
The Geodude behind him was pretty much forgotten in that moment.
He readjusted the Skitty so that it rested on one of his arms and against his body. It seemed tired, it's eyes closed as the purring continued. His estimation was that it was only a little bit taller than his hand was long, probably. He still didn't know its gender, but it didn't really matter right now.
He'd need to think of a name, he mused absentmindedly while his free hand moved to scoop up the other egg, to place it in the now-empty incubator. If he'd been more attentive, he might have noticed that this one had now started moving similarly to how the Skitty egg had been back when he left town. Things were happening at a much more rapid pace than he had anticipated.
Lero had put his front paws (did you call them paws? Feet?) on Ruadri's thigh as he crouched on the ground, getting his face closer to the Skitty. He was small himself, but this little one was even smaller! He'd protect her! This he decided.
The sleepy Skitty opened an eye ever so slightly, sensing that someone was near her, asides from the human who held her. A green face was looking at her. If she wasn't so tired she might have been more concerned, but she was resting in a warm place right now, and that was nice.
She closed her eyes again and fell asleep, the purring subsiding and dreams that Skitty dreams starting starting where the purring ended.
Once Ruaidri had placed the next egg in the incubator and Lero had stepped down from his thigh, he stood up and nearly got knocked down again in shock as he found himself facing the massive Geodude that he'd forgotten about. He managed to not wake the Skitty sleeping on his arm and against his chest, and that was the important part.
He gave a slight smile to the strange pokémon. "Did you also just wanna see the the egg hatch?" he asked. That probably wasn't the reason it had been here, probably it had just been on its way somewhere and chance brought them together, but he still liked to think that it wasn't all that odd for large beings to find joy in a thing like cute little lives entering the world.
"Well, we'll be leaving now, we have places to go," it somehow seemed rude to just start walking away without saying something first, even though he had no idea who this Geodude was, if it belonged to someone or what it was doing.
Somewhere in his mind was the thought that he could have battled it, to try and get Lero stronger. He wasn't sure how powerful this Geodude was, of course, but that wasn't the main thing holding him back. The Geodude had shown no aggression, it had merely watched as the egg hatched. To attack it felt inherently wrong and regardless of whether he though they could win or not, he wouldn't do it.
In a different time and a different life he might have thought differently.
Unless the Geodude tried to stop them, the little party would take off and continue on the road heading towards Ash city.
---- Mystery Egg 3/3 (now inserted into incubator) Journey 3/15
The massive Geodude doesn't seem to have any objections to you leaving, and actually lets out a rumbling "Duuuuuuuude..." as you depart; more like a farewell of sorts. Perhaps it had simply felt the presence of an egg about to hatch and made its appearance? An odd encounter nonetheless.
What's this? You've found...
Net Balls x2!
A Poké Ball with a 50% chance of capturing a wild Pokémon, with a higher, 75% chance of catching any Pokémon that is Water- or Bug-type.
It seemed like the Geodude actually hadn't been all too interested in him and Lero, fortunately, as it seemed to go its own way. The thought that the giant might have just been interested in watching an egg hatch made a faint smile spread across his lips. Now that he had calmed down a little and he was carrying this newly hatched little Skitty in his arms the encounter with the Geodude had taken on a more positive tint.
He felt certain it was something he would remember for some time. Nothing much had come of it, but just being faced with such a large specimen while out on his own... it was an experience for sure. It wasn't something he had anticipated when he set out, how could he have? It opened his eyes a bit to the unpredictable nature of the world and traveling like this, on foot.
The speed at which they made their way forward wasn't exactly fast. Lero could hold a decent tempo if he put his mind to it, but Ruaidri didn't want to force it. As for himself he took some time to just wonder at the little life he was holding in his arms.
How could anything be so tiny? So cute?
It was probably illegal.
Lero glanced up at his handler every once in a while. He'd been around Ruaidri for a bit, even if they hadn't really interacted all that much nor done anything much while Ruaidri had taken care of his parents' funeral, and after that the human had seemed very busy with other stuff that he didn't really understand. Still, he found that he'd learned to read the emotions of the red-haired man decently well and now Lero was very happy with what he saw.
To his mind, Ruaidri had already changed a fair bit, but there was sadness and lingering... negative emotions in him. Not enough to break him, but Lero figured that if Ruaidri wanted to continue to grow he needed to find new experiences and this whole thing had him looking... warmer than Lero had ever seen before. Not in a fiery, angry sort of way though, he had seen that before. No, a different warmth. Soft and kind.
Ruaidri used a singular finger to stroke across the top of the head of the little Skitty as he walked. She shifted in her sleep and he had to adjust his arms to prevent her from falling out of his grasp. How could anyone be so relaxed, he wondered?
He wasn't entirely clear on how long he'd been walking when the sun hit something, light reflecting and drawing his attention.
Was that... pokéballs?
He stopped and looked. They were laying just off the side of the road. With his head titled slightly to the side, he looked around. There seemed to be no signs of people around. There was only a slight moment of hesitation before he scooped them up and pocketed them away, careful not to inconvenience the Skitty. While the right thing might have been to see if he could find a potential owner and return them, well... finders keepers!
Sure, he'd turned his life towards being more law-abiding and all, but this wasn't really stealing or anything. Not really, when you thought about it. Perhaps he should have felt a bit guilty about it, but he really just didn't. They weren't regular balls, sure, but they were neither super expensive nor essential for survival. If someone had dropped them and not noticed then chances were they'd never retrieve them anyways.
Better that someone make use of them, and that someone might as well be him.
Was Lero looking at him reproachfully, or was he imagining things? He met the gaze of the Bulbasaur, but decided to talk about... something, to change the focus and continue to walk.
"So, we need a name for this little one," he nodded down towards the Skitty. Lero nodded, looking first at the Skitty and then facing ahead, keeping an eye on where he was going.
Of course, the Bulbasaur wouldn't actually be able to give an answer, so Ruaidri retreated into his thoughts for a little bit, walking in silence.
"Nata," he said suddenly, making Lero jump slightly and the Skitty shift in her sleep. "I think that would work. I guess we'll just wait until she wakes up and we can see if she approves."
He wanted to know now, but on the other hand he didn't have the heart to bother her while she slept.
