Wanting to get a better look at the southern route again, Soph headed out. Traveling alongside her was her Elekid, Bam. The autumn had turned cold as it approached the winter months, but at least the sun was out and as long as the wind didn't get too harsh, that kept it warm enough.
"How are you feeling, Bam? Not too cold, I hope?" The Elekid lifted her arms and flexed, showing that she was fine and would stay that way. Soph gave a small smile as they continued walking toward Pine. The day was calm so far, thankfully. Getting out of Birch was a relief. She'd dealt with a lot of people recently and just taking her time on a route was a respite. Hopefully she and her Pokemon could get some training in along the way!
The sun was out, which helped. This was the time of year Shalin didn't care for too much. Fall was starting to change to winter, which meant she would need to bundle up when traveling, especially with Prance and other speedy Pokémon. She was dressed for the occasion, a navy windbreaker covering the top half of her otherwise green attire. The Stantler looked a bit antsy as her rider surveyed the southern valley that Birch City split in two. Flit, also eager to head back across the valley, rumbled his wings for a half-second, uprooting a few loose blades of grass in the process. Two more bursts followed as he turned toward the shore. "What is it, Flit?" she asked, looking in the same general direction her partner faced. "Who is that?" Shalin squinted, barely able to see a familiar, long-haired female about a quarter mile down the trail. "Oh, it's her!"
Without even needing a command, Prance started carrying Shalin down the cliff-laden trail, the girl having to hold on tight to keep herself from sliding forward during the downhill run. As the rocky trail turned to a less steep dirt trail, Prance picked up speed, Shalin's left ear starting to turn red from exposure to the cool temperature and apparent wind. "You're going to pass her--" Too late. Prance shot past Soph, Shalin pulling back hard to get her turned around. The Pokémon kicked up a dust cloud in its sudden halt, rearing sharply before turning around and slamming her hooves into the ground. "S--Sorry, Soph!" the rider waved, her breath a little heavy as Flit finally caught up.

The two were just minding their own business when they heard the galloping of hooves. Bam turned to look first, seeing the charging Stantler and started getting ready to defend her human. Soph, however, went to see what the commotion was a little late and was met by a brown blur passing her and she froze up. Shalin managed to get the over-eager Pokemon to stop, finally, and that's when the Elekid realized it wasn't a wild Pokemon and neither Pokemon nor trainer seemed to be a danger. In fact, the blond even greeted her trainer!
This prompted the Elekid to look quizzically at Soph, who unfroze at the sound of her name and slowly turned. "O-oh! Sh-sh-shalin! Prance! Oh, Arceus, you startled me!" Her hand settled on her chest and she let out a sigh. Then she laughed lightly and smiled at the other girl. "I-it's all right, really. Just glad it w-was you guys and not a wild Pokemon. I would've been trampled!"

"I'm glad to see you again!" Shalin smiled toward both the Electric-type and her companion who was bundled up for the occasion. "Sorry to scare you - Prance, true to her name, likes to run! She wouldn't hurt another innocent Trainer on my watch." She suddenly winced in pain - her winter hat wasn't completely covering her left ear, and it was exposed during Prance's entire charge. "Ow!" she cried as she adjusted her hat, making sure it was still secure.
"I see Elekid's come along!" Shalin tried to smile through her mildly-frostbitten ear. It would mend itself over time as long as she kept it under her warm hat. The curious Flit landed next to Soph, on the opposite side of the Elekid.
"It's... good to see you too," Soph replied with a smile and then nodded at the apology. "I know she wouldn't hurt me," she agreed and walked forward a bit to offer a pat on the head to the Stantler. Looking up when Shalin exclaimed in pain, she watched as the girl covered up her ear. She hadn't thought about how the speed would affect the cold. Now she was glad she hadn't chosen to ride on Mati.
At the mention of the Elekid, she looked over to the electric-type and smiled brightly. "Oh, yes. She's doing wonderful. I named her Bam. After bamboo," she explained a little sheepishly. As the Yanma landed near her, she looked over at him and then over to Shalin again. "I see you've got yourself a Yanma. Looking forward to their evolution?"

Prance snorted and smiled when Soph pet her head. Her fur was a little cool to the touch - nothing unusual for this time of year. "Almost more than anything with my team," Shalin replied. "Being able to experience flying on a bug-type like him is going to be amazing. I'll just need to track down some earplugs first!" She giggled for a moment. "Yanma are native to Johto. You don't see them often, but when you do, they tend to come in very large numbers."
Flit seemed to mirror Bam's movements, trying to use Soph as a human shield. "Flit, don't be that way!" At the mention of his name, he quickly flew back to Shalin's side. "The other day, he had a brutal battle with another Trainer's Elekid, and he's been afraid of them ever since." Prance resumed walking southward, at a pace Soph could easily keep up with. "I'll have to show you the rest of my new team when the chance comes."

A smile settled on Soph's face, reserved as per her usual and she watched as the dragonfly avoided her Pokemon. Once the explanation for the behavior came, the woman said, "Aww. That's understandable, though." She considered returning Bam to her Pokeball, but decided that maybe spending some time around an Elekid that he wasn't battling might not be such a bad thing.
Walking along beside Prance, she nodded her head. "My team has made some progress too. Pilea, my Froakie, has evolved! She still doesn't like being touched, but that's all right." She gave a little shrug to that and then noticed some Pokemon a little ways off. "Aww, a Petilil! I hear their evolution requires a lot of attention from their trainer in order to bloom. I think that would be great for me. Do you mind?" She'd take out a different Pokeball, asking if the other female would be all right stopping for a moment so she could capture the wild Pokemon.
With an okay from Shalin, she'd approach the Pokemon a little closer before sending out another Pokemon. A shiny Tepig, who immediately turned around toward his trainer and looked excited. "Geo, let's battle that Pokemon over there," she pointed toward the Petilil. He immediately spun and wiggled before hopping in place in his excitement. "Go ahead with Flame Charge," she instructed, which caused the little pig to dash forward, wreathed in flame, to hit the Petilil.
The Pokemon expressed his disbelief with a cry and sent a Leech Seed to suck energy from Geo. He emitted a slight whine and shook himself, trying to get off the vines sticking to him. "It's okay, it's okay, Geo! Use Flame Charge again, okay?" The pig did just that, dashing forward to hit the Petilil again. This time, the grass-type decided a different tactic was in order and used Sleep Seed, leaving the little pig asleep. Soph looked a little concerned but called out, "Use Sleep Talk, Geo!"
The Tepig snorted to himself in his sleep and got up, wreathing himself in flame once more and dashing forward, much to the Petilil's dismay. He chose to use Synthesis, healing himself a bit and that's when Geo woke up, shaking himself off and yawning. Even with the healing, Soph chose to let Geo use his speed to get two more attacks in before she tossed a Pokeball.

"He'd just be target practice for Flit anyway," Shalin answered. "I think that one would be better for him." She pointed toward a Hoppip leaping from rock to rock with ease, seemingly on the prowl for something. They were synthesizers, so it clearly wasn't a meal. A few seconds later, Flit turned toward the wild and loudly buzzed his wings, uprooting a blade of grass or two and startling both Shalin and the Grass-type. "If you're so excited, go get her!" Grinning (well, the best it could), Flit raced toward the startled Pokémon, mandibles wide open. Shalin's eyes could barely keep up with the two as they circled a rock formation several times. After the fourth lap, he pounced with great speed onto the rock the Hoppip had latched onto, making the perfect micro-adjustment needed to catch his foe in his mandibles.
The screeching wild struggled a bit before loosing a mystic breeze of its own in the form of a Fairy Wind powered by its helicopter blade-like leaves. Shalin's Pokémon loosed grip for a split second as he reeled backward, that moment all it took for the wild to realize it was greatly outmatched and started fleeing. If it were windier out, it would have gotten away, too. Flit, not one to let an enemy escape, dashed toward his quarry and sunk his mandibles into the small Pokémon a second time, shaking it around a bit before tossing it into some nearby tall grass.
When Shalin caught up with Flit, she could see Hoppip residue all over the victor's mandibles and face. "I think you may have overdone it a bit..." she sighed.
Bam watched the battle her trainer was directing but then found she was a little more interested in what the Yanma was doing. She winced a little at the brutality but as Soph exclaimed a little in excitement as the Pokeball clicked shut, the electric-type's attention was drawn back to her. As soon as the woman picked up the ball, the Petilil was transported to her storage and she smiled. What a handsome boy he was.
Looking over to see the tail end of the battle between Flit and the wild Hoppip, she shifted slightly. Shalin's Pokemon had a way of being a little wild still. It was a little worrying, but she said nothing and instead returned her Tepig and walked over to offer Bam her arm. The Elekid was happy to climb up on her shoulders, sitting like a toddler. Soph didn't think she could carry the Pokemon for too long, but it was a good interaction.
"Ready to keep going?" The black-haired woman was ready to be on their way and it looked mostly like Shalin would be ready too.
"Yep!" Shalin almost immediately answered, almost all the way down the valley. So much for the easy part - the hard part was coming. Even with a Pokémon to carry her, she would likely need to do the last bit of the climb on her own. Prance, of course, would be a big help. There was still a bit of time to relax...or so she thought? A lot of clouds were rolling in, and the waters out west were getting choppy. Maybe some rain was coming in? This time of year, rain was not a good thing.
Two bird Pokémon, a Staravia and what she presumed was its chick, popped out of a nearby tree, screching at the travelers. Before Flit could charge the smaller one, Shalin recalled her flying partner. If they did battle with the little one, Mama Bird would shred her. "All yours, Soph!" Shalin gestured toward the wilds.
After moving on their way for a bit, it seemed Shalin had caught sight of some more Pokemon. In fact, she went right ahead and invited Soph to initiate a battle. The black-haired girl looked over at the pair of birds and went over the Pokemon she had with her in her head. Then she turned to the blond and shook her head. "I feel like... it's possible Bam could take on the... the evolved bird, but I don't... really want to risk it."
It was certainly possible that the bird wasn't too strong and the Elekid was starting to look eager, but Soph was ready to return the electric-type if need be. Evolved Pokemon tended to be on the stronger side and with Bam only being level ten, Soph wasn't sure how she'd handle it other than ganging up on the mother Pokemon and she didn't want to do that if she didn't have to.
"Let's just keep going for now," she suggested hopefully.

"Works for me," Shalin was quick to answer. Having crossed the river, the foothills surrounding Pine Town loomed. The easy part of their trip was over. She could start to hear Prance's breathing. The Normal-type probably would not be able to make it all the way up the hills without significantly slowing down the entire group. Shalin frowned, gently patting Prance's head. "You let me know when you need a rest, okay girl?"
Her other concern was the weather. The wind was really starting to pick up, and those clouds looked dark. She had camping equipment if it came down to that, and it would fit two, but it wouldn't exactly be comfortable with two. Shalin pointed toward the ominous sky. "We may need to beat feet. I can rummage a shelter together if we need it, but that feels avoidable."
Soph was relieved when the other girl was fine moving on and leaving the birds alone. They continued along for a while and she too noticed the weather. She was dressed warmly, but not as warmly as she could have been and with the clouds looming, she didn't want to stop and try to get mittens or earmuffs or anything like that out of her bag. As a result, she just tucked her hands into the armpits of her jackets and hunched her shoulders against the wind.
"Yeah. I... think we can make it," she agreed that they should be able to avoid having to set up camp if they kept on their way at a decent pace. She just really hoped to avoid any freezing rain or, worse, hail. Snow, she could deal with okay, at least. Bam thankfully was well-balanced on her shoulders despite the bit of a hunch and they were mostly able to keep each other warm.

Keeping moving along the road helped a surprising amount in staying warm. Shalin recalled Flit after he started to lag behind. "...I completely lost track of time, buddy! You rest your wings. Caprice, your turn!" With that, a six-tailed fire-type relieved Flit, warmth radiating from the Vulpix that stood well up to Soph's midsection. She stood comfortably in between Soph and the Stantler, but did not face or greet the traveler in any way.
A sparkle caught the Vulpix's eyes, and she took off ahead of the group. "Soph won't bite, Caprice!" Shalin shouted in her Pokémon's direction. Too late. She had already scampered well down the road. "Wonder what she saw?" the trainer mumbled. She had come to a stop several hundred feet down the side of the road, a green gemstone in her teeth. "I'm going to see what she wants, Soph," she addressed her traveling partner directly. Shalin urged Prance to catch up to her, the hasty pace leaving Soph somewhat behind.
Attempting capture of a paralyzed Igglybuff with a Pokeball!

Looking at the Vulpix, Soph was amazed by the size. Usually such a Pokemon would probably stand to her knee at most. As the Pokemon darted off and the trainer tried to assure the fire-type that the dark-haired woman wasn't going to bite, the girl in question couldn't help but giggle a little. Shrugging at what she might have seen, she then gave a nod as Shalin went to check on her Pokemon.
Bam perked up too, though, and turned. Soon enough, Soph could hear what her Pokemon had heard too and the cause slowly bounced into view. The singing Igglybuff was skipping and vocalizing with a bit of exaggeration and Soph just found it positively adorable. "Would you like to battle it, Bam?" The Elekid immediately became excited, hopping with excitement and heading closer to the wild Pokemon.
"All right. Start with a Leer!" The Igglybuff was caught off guard by the sudden glare from the Elekid and puffed out her cheeks in annoyance. Then she continued singing, but this time with a special purpose. The Sing move quickly put Bam to sleep and Soph was at a bit of a loss. The balloon Pokemon followed up by attempting to confuse the electric type with a Sweet Kiss, causing Bam to turn over in her sleep.
The wild Pokemon then proceeded to whack the confused, sleeping Elekid twice, clearly very upset by her performance being interrupted. Waking up blearily, Bam got up dizzily as the Igglybuff put some space between them. Clearing her head just enough to hear Soph call, "Try Thundershock," the Pokemon did just that. The Igglybuff recovered quickly, however, and used Copycat to send the same attack back. It seemed to hurt Bam more than it should have and Soph became a little panicked. She didn't realize Competitive had boosted the effectiveness of special moves for the Igglybuff.
"Okay, um... use Dynamic Punch, Bam," she instructed. The Elekid managed not to let her own confusion affect her and moved in with the attack to hit the Igglybuff. Now that she was confused too, the wild Pokemon was not too pleased and retaliated with another Pound. Unluckily for her, Bam's Static ability paralyzed her. "Quick Attack," came the instruction, only for the Elekid to trip and smack her face into the ground.
The Igglybuff went ahead and was able to use another Pound. "Try Quick Attack again," Soph called out and it seemed Bam was able to shake herself out of the confusion at this point. Once she made contact with the move, Soph tossed a Pokeball. She hadn't expected this battle to be quite that... chaotic.
