Gabe would be a liar if he so much as hinted that he hadn’t enjoyed the Halloween festivities at the manor. It had been, for all it was worth and all it wasn’t, great, but now with some time spent resting and recuperating, it was time to head back to Bass. There was a little pressing matter that he was kind of irritated to deal with but resigned to do so himself, so he really couldn’t just stick around Birch any longer.
While Gabe technically had a bicycle with him, something was questionable with the chain, so he’d loaded it up onto Wishes the Togekiss and had him fly it home a bit faster. So now what was left was to walk back with Gum still bracing his knee in a makeshift squishy set up and Lizbeth wrapped around his neck like a vibrant red burn-tastic scarf, he was off again.
Ugh it’s getting cold… Gabe frowned up at the sky as if daring for those murky grey-ish clouds to actually drop snow on him. He had a fuzzy enough jacket on and a Fire lizard to boot, but that didn’t mean he wanted to be walking in the stuff.

It would be fun, Jules silently mocked himself, I'm an Explorer now, I should explore. What he hadn't taken into consideration when he set off from Birch was that wild pokémon wouldn't especially care that he didn't have any of his own -- or, well. Any that were battle ready. As darling as it was that they'd hatched during the ball itself, he wasn't sending anyone that young into battle -- technically capable or not.
So it was a gift from above when Jules spotted another person, walking the same way he was -- and with what looked an awful lot like a live pokémon around their neck, if the merrily burning fire was anything to go by.
"Allo, mon amie," Jules said in his best charming voice, "it looks like we're traveling in the same direction. I don't currently have any friends with me in fighting shape, would you mind if I tagged along with you?" Jules flashed a broad smile and added as an afterthought, "Ah, yes, manners, apologies. I'm Jules, and you are...?"
Lizbeth startled. She’d been comfortable and kind of lulled by Gabe’s steps, so when a voice hit her ears, she straightened unexpectedly. Gabe fidgeted in turn stopping in mid-step and retracting so that neither of them immediately fell over. A hand reached up absently to clasp that fiery tail to keep it still. Meanwhile, Gabe’s eyes flicked sideways to the redhead, and a small smile flashed across his features.
Oh, a traveler with only a few weak Pokemon asking to come along for the ride. How robbable… Gabe suppressed a laugh. “Well now, for someone so handsome? I wouldn’t mind that one bit,” he smiled pleasantly back. “My name’s Gabe, this is Liz.” He made a small head gesture up against the Charmander who was slowly starting to settle again on finding that there was no actual harm about to come to them.
“Headed towards Cedar?” Gabe asked as he slowly started to walk again. “Or a little further than that?”

"Delightful to meet you, Gabe," Jules said, and matched Gabe's pace as he started up again. "Glad to hear I haven't lost my knack yet -- or at least you're a flatterer." He chuckled, and stuck his hands in his pockets.
At Gabe's question, he answered, "Towards, yes, then also further past. Though I might take a ride from Cedar back to Ivy. This was, ah. Rather poorly considered." To illustrate his point, Jules held out his arm. His jacket's sleeve had been torn at, not a huge hole but several threads were sticking out in places, in a rough U-shape. "For being a literal professor interested in some aspects of pokémon, I can't actually recall the name of what it was that bit me... le petit connard." Jules grumbled the last comment mostly to himself.
My, Jules was chipper, wasn’t he? A small smile curled at the corners of Gabe’s mouth at the mention of flattery. Jules wasn’t that bad on the eyes, now that Gabe took a bit of a longer look but heh.
Hm? So he was going passed all the way back to Ivy, then? That was straight through Bass even, heh. “I’m headed towards Bass myself,” he commented briefly before his attention was directed to the jacket hole. A brow raised, and Gabe halfheartedly wondered what it was he was looking at and couldn’t quite pick up what was said in what he guessed was Kalosian thereafter. But he did catch on to one thing. “So you teach?” he asked. “Something related to Pokemon?” Or he did research or something, Gabe guessed, but the vibe off this one was lecturer first and foremost for whatever reason.
Lizbeth had closed her eyes again and was listening absently to the humans conversing. Her senses would not be completely closed again, though, considering that unexpected surprise earlier.

Jules nodded along somewhat absently as Gabe replied. Bass was nice, but he didn't have too much to say about it, and Gabe moved the conversation along anyway.
Smiling-- again? Still? Jules nodded. "Ah, yes I do! Geology, as a matter of fact. I used to teach mineralogy and had a course over the various stones with energy that resonate with pokémon, but, well." Jules waved his hand in the air noncommittally. "I don't anymore. C'est la vie. How about you, then? Are you working, in school, both? Neither?"
Behind his sunglasses, Jules squinted a bit. He... couldn't tell how old this person was, if he was honest. They could be anywhere from a young teenager who was an early bloomer to not too much younger than himself... but, as they'd already guessed his background in academia, if they were upset by him asking about school, if they were 'much too old' for it, he could at least fall back on that as an excuse. After all, he'd been in school for... well, effectively his whole life, minus the health-sabbatical he had to take last year.
Geology was the study of… of rocks? So many rock people… Well, if you counted two as so many, but still. Gabe blinked a couple of times listening to the classes listed off. They sounded… so boring… so ready for sleep.
A shake of head was given, and Gabe blinked a couple of times to get himself back together. The question was being returned to him, right well. “I’ve been out of school for a few years. I work odd jobs mostly,” he answered semi-truthfully. “If you ever need some Pokemon cleared from an attic or a flower bed mulched, let me know.” He laughed lightly at that. “I guess I also consider myself a traveler now more than anything…” Even if he hadn’t really gone all that far yet or anything, heh. “Sort of started a journey recently but keep coming home for reasons.” Gabe shrugged his shoulders lightly at that.

"Ah, I see," Jules said. So at least this person was out of high school, maybe college? "That sounds like an interesting life you lead! Mind if I ask what those reasons are?" Jules used one hand to wave at nothing in particular as he added, "No pressure if you do mind, just curious. I can certainly ramble about myself if you'd prefer, but, well. I'd rather hear about you, truth be told."
Reasons? It was rare for Gabe to find himself contemplating the reasons for his actions let alone for his lifes’ decisions. There was a pause— filled by Jules’ follow up comments— wherein he took a moment to genuinely consider. The follow up comment on wanting to hear more of himself, though, earned a soft laugh from Gabe. His hand absently reached to feel over Liz’s soft skin wherein it might have otherwise played with his hair.
“Mmmmm, I never really found an occupation or otherwise that suited me,” he answered after a moment. That wasn’t entirely a lie, but he did find something that suited him better than other things at the end of the day. “And our world seems to be filled with explorable things with not enough explorers.” He laughed briefly and flashed a smile back in Jules’ direction. “My mom is sick, though, so wandering too far can be worrisome if I can’t get home quickly.” Always the excuse, only vaguely the full truth. “Heh, maybe when this little girl evolves a couple of times, we’ll go farther.” Liz opened one eye and said nothing back at that.

Jules nodded. "Very valid, very valid. Family is important, and I'm sure your mother appreciates it." He was curious how she was sick, but having been ill himself, knew how ugly and personal that could get. Best not to push.
He chuckled at the comment about the charmander evolving, despite there not being anything particularly funny. "Ah, yes. Charizard are well suited to that, as a species, aren't they? I... really ought to find myself a pokémon to ride as well. Trains can be expensive, and my coordination is, well. Poor enough that bike riding over long periods of time seems deeply unwise." Jules remembered the very poor dancing he did at the ball the previous night, including stepping on at least one partner's toes. He shook his head to clear the thought, then added, "So, do you battle much, then? I'm not very good at them myself, especially not in the moment, but the strategy is fascinating. And the perpetual arms race of strategies, in the top tiers of competition! It's really something else."
I wish she did…. A soft breath of something bitter came and went from Gabe as Jules spoke. She did. He knew she did. She’d said it plenty of times when he did show up, but many years of mind games and gas lighting always did make him question that for sure.
The hand that was absently patting Lizbeth shifted a little but continued patting. The Charmander opened one eye again and let out a soft noise in response. She’d evolve when she damn well pleased and not any earlier than that, thank you.
A curious smile came and went from Gabe’s features as Jules admitted coordination wasn’t his strong suit. Damn if he wasn’t just saying ‘steal something from me’ at that point. Hm, how best to go about doing that though— Do you battle much. “I battle now and again,” he answered. “Mostly wild Pokemon when I am traveling but sometimes the occasional trainer as well.” That was an understatement, but he was not about to get into the why’s right then.
“I’ve considered challenging the gym a couple of times, but I always end up too busy with other things to sit and properly train.” He shrugged his shoulders, and Lizbeth shifted and gave a warning noise that he should probably just stay still instead. Right, right.
With a small sigh, Jules said, "Ah, yes. C'est la vie. Has a habit of getting in the way of plans, she does. But life has plans of her own, I suppose." Jules shrugged in return, a much larger gesture than Gabe did -- and chuckled when even that little movement was enough to make the charmander grumble.
Gabe smiled a little but couldn’t help but sarcastically repeat those words in his mind. Life has plans. It sure did, and it seemed to have every intention of screwing him over. He wasn’t about to let it, though, not if he could help it. “You’d think it’d be more incentive that there’s a gym practically in my back yard,” he chuckled. “But it’s also the Water gym.” Which, considering where Bass City was located, made sense, but wasn’t very helpful for someone with a Fire starter and a Fire Pokemon emphasis.
Pausing a moment and side-eyeing Jules, Gabe hummed a little to himself. “Have you ever considered challenging a gym or two?” he didn’t seem like the type, but Gabe always was out to be surprised by people now and again. He’d mentioned having weak Pokemon already, but that didn’t mean anything about what he had in the past.

Jules sniffed a laugh at the mention of the water gym. "No, I can't imagine your little Liz would enjoy that very much," he said, then let Gabe continue.
“Have you ever considered challenging a gym or two?” Gabe asked, and it was Jules' time to pause and ponder, stroking the stubble of his chin.
"I suppose, once my new little one has grown a little, that might not be a bad idea. I need to work on having a team such that I can actually defend myself... my end goal, with this whole explorer's license, is to leave the beaten path, to broaden my potential field research, as it were." He blinked, then, and realized he was rambling. "And you?" he asked, "are you traveling enough yet that you'd try a gym further away?"
A smile came and went from Gabe’s features as Jules accurately assessed why challenging a Water Gym wasn’t on his high priority list. Come to think of it, though, wasn’t there a gym on Plum Island? That was just a short ferry ride over. He’d have to check the Typing to see what there was, but perhaps that would be a more feasible gym to go after— if he even really wanted to commit to this idea. His hand absently stroked Lizbeth’s tail. The Charmander made a soft noise in response. Maybe it would even be the push she needed to evolve… A thought for later.
His gaze flicked sideways to Jules again. An interesting goal…. he guessed. Geology, the earth, yeah that sounded about right. As the question was returned to him, though, he remembered the thought again. “Well, no not really. I know there is another Gym on Plum Island…” he mused looking forward again. “Which isn’t too far off the ferry I don’t think, but I haven’t been to Plum in a while.” For Reasons but still.
