"Yeah, I just go into town...no, no, I don't--I remembered to shower, ma, Arceus."
A young man with a head of startling red hair was standing outside the Birch City lab, cellphone to his ear and fingers tapping in rhythm against a bike-stand not too far from the entrance. His cheeks were flushed with embarrassment for just a moment, brow knit tight together in visible frustration, then relaxed into a nervous but anticipatory smile.
"I'll send you pictures as soon as I've got 'em. Love you, too."
Jamie clicked his phone screen to end the call, then slid the phone into the pockets of his black jeans. Alright, game face. He was finally past his sixteenth birthday and was all set to start his run-through of Arciel's contest halls; but first and foremost, he was about to get his very first Pokemon here! He could hardly contain his excitement. His poor neighbor who'd volunteered to fly him here from home on his Tropius had looked ready to toss him off with how much he'd been rambling in excitement. But Jamie could hardly contain himself. What kind of Pokemon was he going to get? How hard would it be for him to chose? He couldn't just as for all of them, right? That was probably...bad.
He stepped into the lab and glanced around for a sign that read "New Trainers Here", but there probably wouldn't be something so obvious upon entering, right? Eh, he'd be fine. He'd navigated far more confusing corn mazes back home, this lab was nothing.
[attr="class","momoPBody"] Hm? Holly looked up from her computer. Was that the front door, or was she imagining things? She waited for a moment, listening intently, then decided she definitely heard shuffling around from out in the reception area. If she was wrong, oh well, but better safe than sorry. She did have an appointment around now, didn't she? Mr. James Wilson? She took one last glance at her computer to confirm as much, then headed out to look.
Finding a red-haired young trainer, her suspicions were confirmed. "Ah, James, yes? Wilson? Right this way, young man, I have a choice of starters all lined up for you." She had decided such a passionate young man-- or at least he sounded passionate in his application-- should like Fire-types well enough, though Oricorio was flexible in its typing if not, and wouldn't actually learn any Fire moves for a while. Still, a dancing Pokemon made a good match for a coordinator. And Audino had a pretty good move pool from early on, as well as being good potential support for others he would catch, so perhaps it would take his fancy more? Only time would tell which he'd pick, though. After retrieving the three balls, she said, "Please let me know which most catches your eye."

A voice called out from farther into the lab and Jamie stood up straighter, raising a hand on reflex. He almost shouted "Here" or "Present" but this wasn't roll-call at school and that would look pretty stupid. Yes his heart was beating a mile a minute in his chest but he wasn't going to make a fool of himself in front of the Pokemon Professor! He walked up to where Holly motioned for him and gave her a bright smile in greeting before his eyes went over the Pokeballs she pulled out and set onto the table. Still probably would be in poor taste to ask for all three of them without even looking, right? Yeah. No. Bad.
One by one the beams of white light burst free from their confines and disappeared, leaving three Pokemon in their wake. And, alas, for as sweet as Audino were and as much as he did like Growlithe for their fierce evolution and overall adorableness...
...there really just wasn't any competition. Jamie looked down upon that Oricorio and his bright green eyes went almost impossibly wide, as did the grin on his face. Yes! All of his yes! An Oricorio was perfect for him in so many ways! They were dancers--natural-born performers!--and their multiple forms would make every contest unique, every show spectacular! He had to bend over just a little to be on eye-level with the magnificent bird but once he was at it he extended an open hand to its wing, pulse still frantic in his ears.
"Hey there! You and me match, don't we? Color-coordinated! Heh-heh." He snickered, gesturing to his shock of red hair with the hand not offered to the Oricorio, "I think that's got to be fate telling us to join up! And just look at you--the two of us could absolutely sweep contests together! What do you say? Do you want to be my Pokemon?"
The Oricorio looked at his hand, its long red wings held together at its chest as if it were contemplating whether or not to take up the offer. That moment of hesitation made Jamie's energy cool just a touch. Oh...was it nervous? What about? Was it him...?
I'm not freaking it out, am I? Am I coming on too strong?
Come on, come on, I need you to like me...
James swallowed, moving his hand from a hand-shake-like position to his palm facing up, like he were demonstrating he was holding nothing dangerous in it. "...hey, uh, sorry if I'm coming on strong there. But I'm being honest. I think you'd be perfect for me, and I think you'd have a lot of fun being my Pokemon. So...if you don't want to, I'd understand and be sad, but I won't just pluck you up and walk out of here if you don't want that."
The Oricorio shuffled its feathers together. Then, with a nervous glance downward, took a step forward and placed one of its wings into Jamie's hand. His smile widened again, though there was less of his manic energy from earlier in it. Alright. So this little guy was more on the timid side. That was alright! Not ideal for a performer but...everyone got a little stage fright in the beginning. It was nothing they couldn't work on together. Right?
"I think I've got a winner here, Professor Holly!" He stood back up to full height, hand still gently holding Oricorio's wing. "I promise I'll take good care of them from here on out!"
[attr="class","momoPBody"] As James lit up at the Oricorio, Holly eased into a gentle smile. It was always a pleasure to see trainers genuinely excited about a Pokemon. Of course, she knew this one was a little timid, but she wouldn't say that; it would be important to see if James could read his new Pokemon and react accordingly without being told what to do. Fortunately, he handled it well, and she nodded in approval.
"Congratulations," she told the boy. "It seems he likes you." She recalled the other two Pokemon. "Do you have any other questions, or are you ready to set out on your adventure?"

"I think I've got the basics down!" Jamie said in turn while accepted the pokeball that had been holding his new Oricorio inside it. Did he have any questions asides from what he knew? Maybe a few, but he wanted to look competent in front of the professor. The one thing he could think to ask that didn't make him look ridiculous was what she could think of as things he might now know that he should know...was that something he could ask? He touched the button of the pokeball and a red beam of light engulfed the Oricorio on the desk, then absorbed it back into the ball itself. He placed it onto a belt-side holder he had received before leaving home. "Is there anything special about Oricorio I should keep in mind? Like, special grooming or diet needs? Oh! Yeah! Nectar!"
Jamie made a fist with one hand and patted it into the palm of the other.
"Do they have an amount of time they have to wait before they can use nectar to change their forms? That would be a great way to spice up my coordinator shows, but I don't want to make the little guy sick by feeding him it too often, you know? Is there a limit?"
"And, um, last thing; do you think he'll be alright on stage? He did seem kind of shy..." he drew in a small, slow breath, "I don't want to scare him by pushing him too hard."
@holly WC: 251 Between this the piplup egg and the other Oricorio, BIRB SQUAD.
[attr="class","momoPBody"] “Oricorio are resilient Pokemon,” Holly answered. “But a good rule of thumb is to give it a day in between a previous form change before changing again.”
The second question earned a small pause. So he had noticed. “As a trainer, part of your role is to lead your Pokemon. Leadership includes assessing a Pokemon’s weaknesses and turning them into strengths. Build your relationship with Oricorio and make the decision for yourself.”
Turning to take a box from a shelf, she then held it out to Jamie. “These items will assist you on your journey. Use them wisely,” she stated.

"A day's break, huh? Alright. I'll remember that!" Jamie's smile grew brighter still at the knowledge that there was such a short time between using nectar for Oricorio. A day's rest still meant he could have them change per contest no problem! And he'd catch other Pokemon as well asides from Oricorio, obviously, to pick up any slack that may fall in any case. He wasn't quite sure he was reassured about his starter's shyness though. How was he supposed to turn a timid little birdie into a star if they were scared of it? That felt like he'd need to force them to get over their stage-fright, which felt...cruel. He didn't want to upset the poor thing any more than it might already be.
He accepted the pokeballs and dex and clipped the balls to his waist and slide the dex into his pocket. All in all he still felt pretty confident, even if things weren't going perfect. It was just day one! Maybe his Oricorio would surprise him. Ah, he still needed to name it, too! What name would fit a Pokemon like them...he'd have to think about it hard!
"Thank you so much, Professor!" He started towards the door, waving wildly with a big bright smile on his face. "Hope you'll see me in a contest hall some day, hahah!"
