Juni failed to suppress the snort that immediately came at Derby’s words. “Good,” was all she’d say to that— because honestly if Derby didn’t charge them an arm and a leg for— a literal arm, was she even doing it right?
“Ah uh yeah lemme get dressed,” Juni realized right after Derby’s words and shifted the board off of her to disappear into her room momentarily. She came back with a t-shirt, jeans, and her long tan trench coat. She was fumbling with the ends of her hair as she tried to pull it all back into a bun with a single rubber band, and eventually she gave up just letting what remained fall by the wayside. “Sounds good,” she smiled a little at that.
Leaving the house, Juni immediately shivered at the cold, muttering something menacing about it under her breath and adjusting her jacket collar a couple of times trying to seal in the warmth somehow. “Not even Northern Hoenn gets this cold, I swear…” she sighed softly and glanced back at Derby. “Kind of wish I had Torchic downy feathers…” she admitted with a small smile.
At least it wasn’t snowing. Arceus she didn’t want it to be snowing. Nope, nada, nein.
Outside now, Derby took the chiil in stride, hands crossing over her chest and holding at her arms. A tank top was probably a stupid idea, but Derby didn't care too much, she can handle a lot worse, duh. At Juni's comment Derby found herself chuckling, hands tightening around her arms slightly, "Naw, it's only a lil' chilly- wait until we get further into winter, that's when you'll start to regret leaving Hoenn." because arceus knows how cold Arcielwinters get.
Ah, Torchic Downy feathers? "We could check the pokecentre? They could have some in stock, or ever a Torchic you can borrow- winter's a hard time for travelers after all, gotta have somethin' to keep them warm." her hand ghosted Bend's ball for a moment, arms unclasping, "You want me to get out Bend's in the meantime? He's able to release some mighty hot air, might be able to keep ya a lil' warmer."
Walking a little faster now, she surveyed the area, "You reckon we're gonna need to buy a snow shovel? If we're goin' down to the hardware store it doesn't hurt to stop up now, aye?"
Juni took a double take on realizing that Derby was sleeveless still. W-wait asjdhaisjdhaksdj. Oh well. Derby was the one dealing with the cold— But I’d be the one dealing with her if she got sick. A shake of head was given at the response. “I’m going to live indoors this winter…” she answered. At least the lab was air tight (and she didn’t have to pay for the heating).
Huh— Actually, at Derby’s prompting, Juni had did wonder if there was a Torchic downy coat somewhere in the stores. She remembered Pyre shed like crazy, and it would be silly not to capitalize on those loose fiery chicken feathers when one had the chance. Too bad Pyre had evolved since then, and Combusken feathers were a little too sharp to be as comfortable.
At the offer, she smiled. Too bad Fennekin didn’t have open flames— Wait. “Actually…” she shifted quickly to check her coat pockets, but sure enough she was there. “Smokie!” Juni called releasing the Quilava right after. The rush of fiery air immediately warmed the air for a hot second, and Juni’s glasses briefly fogged in response. Ooof… Taking them off, she started to clean them as they walked.
The Quilava looked around, nodded at Derby before looking at Juni. “Would you mind walking with us and keeping the flames up?” Ah, she supposed that was fine. A small head nod was given. Juni smiled and set her glasses back on again. There we go, clear enough..
Oh gods, were they going to have to shovel snow this winter? “M-maybe so…” Juni grumbled considering that. “Maybe a snow brush for the windows and the top of the house too…” She didn’t want that piling up if it did.

The brown haired girl let out a snort at Juni's living inside comment, "Livin' indoors and bundling up sounds like a plan, aye? If only I had that luxury, gotta work with dad a bunch these holidays, all the key mechanics of peoples houses are freezin' up and pop's the only one brave enough to go attem, needs all hands on deck if ya know what I mean." And it was true! Her dad could get mighy involved in his work, so much so that he forgot he was in a wheelchair that can just as easily get frozen over if not moved for long. Maybe she could show Skye the ropes of her pops work this winter, see if he was keen to volunteer? He was on holidays now, right?
Oh she was totally gonna have to make him do holiday things! What did kids even like... snowboarding, maybe? Or... snow...things... All Derby did as a kid was polish and smelt metal for fun under the tutorlidge of her dad, and she knew as much as Skye showed interest, that he got bored fairly quick.
She was drawn from her thoughts at the sudden warmth that engulfed the duo, and momentarily confused she looked around, only to settle her gaze on Smokie and smiling, "Aw, heya Smokes." a glance to Juni now, "Quick thinkin', Junes!"
Hands moved to clasp and unclasp at her forearms, as if attempting to trap the heat and push it into her skin. Usually wearing tank tops was fine, but the chill on the air left her skin stinging slightly. "Ooh, Snow Brush? Yeah one couldn't hurt." she paused, then blinking. Skye... yeah.
"Yo Juni, whaddu kids like to do in winter?" An eyebrow raise as her attention was directed back to the girl next to her, "Like, I spent all my childhood with pop doin' metalworkin', but I don't think Skye'd want that for the holidays? Should I like build a sled, or would that be a waste of energy?"
Juniper winced as Derby spoke of working all winter. Lucky for her, the university slowed down just a bit during that time, what with students out of class and research on hold. The most she had to work on was her personal science which, while work, was work she could do when she wanted to. “Sounds like you need a robot to work on your off days,” she answered with a small snort.
Smokie smiled sideways at Derby and gave a trill in response to the acknowledgement. Raising her flames a little more, she made sure the air was nice and warm for both her trainer and their mutual friend. Juni smiled a little as well. “Open flames are probably warmer than anything…” she nodded along with her own logic. Of course, if she had thought to bring along Blazer, she most certainly would have.
The sudden question had Juni’s eyebrow raising. “In winter?” she repeated. Hm, how old was Skye again? “Ah… I… don’t know…” she answered reaching up to feel through her hair. “I was always in studying during the winter. My brothers went out, but I never… really knew what they were up to…” Some color came to her features as she considered (and realized) this fact. “I imagine they’d like…. Ice skating, maybe?” Not that she could remember a time when any body of water had frozen over like that either, whoops. "Ah, uh... sorry..heh..."
Damn right she needed a robot to work on her off days, and as soon as AI became like a full-blown thing Derby'd probably throw herself right at studying again to learn it- because making metal move on it's own accord, being able to learn from itself?
That was something fantastical that she'd love to see in her lifetime, it could help the world in so many ways- hell maybe it could be a welcome change in the prosthetics industry one day. Shit maybe she should do some research or something, just thinking about this was sending her head into a spin.
She nodded at Juni's own confusion on winter activities for kids, not at all surprised that her childhood was spent studying. "I mean... snugglin' up by the fire doin' your latest calculations is just as good a winters activity as diving head-first into snow, probably." A shrug, and she moved to tuck a messy strand of hair back into its tie, scrucnhing her nose up at the stubbornness of the brown lock. "Ice skating... maybe to a rink or something, i'd say- would that be safe for Skye?" A pause as she remembered his one-eye, a hum leaving her lips, "I've never been so i'm just wondering about like, him bein' about to keep coordinated..."
Rounding another street corner her eyes drew up to the upcoming complex of lumped together shops of all sizes, "Aye, here we are!" a hand moved back to her hip, "Where first, Savage?"
A small laugh broke from Juni as Derby spoke. “Exactly!” she answered warmly. Sitting down, doing some calculations or reading a good book, was an excellent way to spend the winter! In the spring and summer and fall there were farm things to do, but it wasn’t the same for the winter!
Smokie looked up at her human kind of inquisitively. She didn’t really get Juni’s mentality all that much, but she supposed it didn’t matter too much. Juni had never promised a journey of sorts or a gym challenge, after all. But…. uh… ah.
Juni didn’t notice. Her gaze had raised, and she seemed to be thinking about something. “Well, a rink would probably make the most sense. They take care of the ice and stuff more than outdoors….” And one was less likely to suddenly fall through the surface of a lake when one was on nothing but a sheet of ice. “We could all go even… maybe…” Was she really volunteering herself? Heh. Maybe so.
As they came up to a bunch of shops all huddled together, though, Juni refocused. “Alright…. Since the hardware store’s closest… let’s get those nuts, bolts, and whatever first…” she smiled. “Onwards, Vulcan!”
Derby's eyes opened a little wider at the prospect of them all going together to an indoor rink, they probably had nurses or whatever around too if anything were to go wrong and it probably wasn't as cold as outside, anyway. The girl nodded then, a hum leaving her lips, "Hell yeah, Skye'd love it!" her eyes flicked over to Juni and a smug-smile then rested on her features,
"Oh? If you're volunteerin' then... He'd probably be happy you're goin', just be prepared for him to be clingy as all hell if you do." a pause, "...God I can't even skate, let alone ice skate. I'll probably ending up eating ice."
Skye always loved seeing Juni for some reason, maybe he was just at the age that adults fascinated him or that he saw Juni like another sister, Derby really couldn't be certain on what was going on in that kids head. Her hands picked at the hem of her tank top as they started towards the hardware store, "Sounds like a plan! Let's get this raid underway."
The hardware store was a place Derby felt at home, surrounded by tools, by metal things, you can bet her eyes lit up like a kid in a candy store. "Be on the lookout for Nylock or Flange nuts and bolts, though a prevailing torque lock might come in hand later on with the worm arms building..." Like a girl on a mission, she'd found herself at the appropriate aisle in no time, "Machine screws are probably best, or I could try tinkerin' with carriage bolts..."
She'd quickly come to rest by the nuts and bolts, hands at her hips and scrutinising them, "Though this is just for the framework of the smaller-scale model, to show how it'd work and work as a test... should I go with the cheaper jam and heavy hex nuts?"
Juni smiled a little at Derby’s enthusiasm. “What makes you think I can skate?” she snorted back. “We’ll skate ride-or-die style.” If one of them fell, they’d be taking down all three of them. That was just how they had to roll in this case. “Actually… I wonder if they’ll let me have Disc out, at least then it could float over the ice and catch one of us…” she hummed a little thoughtfully. The Metang didn’t necessarily touch the ground and had long arms. It could probably catch at least Skye if not Juni and Derby. She’d ask when they actually went and carry Disc just in case.
For now, hardware store. Juni was quick to grab a cart as they went in and start pushing it after Derby. Nylock or Flange nuts and bolts. “Alright,” she answered looking about slowly. Juni was not as well acquainted with the hardware store as Derby was, but she had been in plenty of similar stores in the past. Her father had loved their small town one and was always building and crafting something wooden with hinges whether it be a door or a bird house. Derby may have been on an entirely different level in terms of design and skill, but to Juni, the fundamentals were still there.
As they came to the correct aisle, Juni looked around a bit. The question earned a small hum in response. “Hmmmm well in this case if they’re already paying for it, might as well go with the top tier stuff,” she answered. When it was on someone else’s tab, it was easier to buy what one wanted, right?
Oh hell, Disc'd be a good idea- if the people in the rink let em' out. Definitely better then potential knocks and bruises, not that Derby couldn't handle it. At the comment about ride or die style Derby only snorted, but she left it at that, her focus on the task at hand being not easily swayed.
Stupid worm arm. As Juni mentioned it was best to go with the top tier stuff the girl nodded, surveying the aisle once more before grabbing a few packs of the necessary nuts and bolts, ignoring the hefty price on their tag as she surveyed them once more. "These'll do then, prolly." She shifted, upon realizing she didn't have a basket and stared at the packets in her hands, but being as stubborn as she was, Derby reckoned it'd be a great idea to keep at it, she could handle carrying everything up until checkout! A glance back to Juni and an eyebrow raised, "...Uh... what else did we say we needed again?"
“Hey put ‘em here,” Juni slapped the metal of the cart a couple of times to catch Derby’s attention. She wasn’t going to use all this space herself, after all. Checking off the nuts and bolts on her list, she read over it again slowly searching. “Oh yeah, the bathroom light needs a new lightbulb…” she remembered offhandedly. Pushing the cart that direction, though, she couldn’t help but stop and stare at all the light fixtures on display in the area. It was so… so bright and warm and cheery. Juni shook her head and put a bulb of the correct wattage in the basket thereafter.
“Did you need anything else for any upcoming projects?” she asked unsure of what else Derby was working on then. Was it just the noddle arm, or had she other projects on the backburner— “Oh I bet whiteboard markers would be somewhere in here…” she realized aloud mid-thought. Builders and construction workers needed them just as much as anyone else, yeah?
How had she not noticed the cart? Damn she must have got super caught up lookin' for different nuts and bolts! There's a thanks passed as she unceremoniously dumps her collection into the trolley. As Juni began dwelling over the list, Derby went over what was needed for her own project- she already had mass amounts of metal scraps... matches...tools-
Oh shit they were moving to get lightbulbs, Juni was right the one in the bathroom had been totally busted for a bit now- Derby had to use her phone flashlight for a solid week. She followed Juni to the light area, still trying to figure out exactly what was needed- wasn't there... oh- right! "Armature wire!" Damn, she was glad she thought of that.
A small victorious smile graced her features for a second before Juni's comment about the whiteboard markers, starting towards the wiring section and swiping up five packets of the cheapest wires she could get- it was just for models and not the real thing after all. "I reckon the markers would be like... at the front- yknow near the checkouts? Since there wouldn't be a dedicated craft section."
“Ama-whatnow?” Juni blinked a couple of times as she was pulled from her thoughts again. Armature Wire? Had she heard that right? Sure enough, that was the case as they went to the wire section and got what was needed. Juni squinted a couple of times at the various spools of the stuff, asked a few questions here and there, but more or less assumed Derby knew exactly wahts he was doing and what she needed. Well that was two things checked off the list that hadn’t been on the list. Heh, good good.
Juni adjusted her glasses as Derby spoke. Yeah that sounded about right. “We can get them when we have everything else then…” she decided with a nod. Going through a few more things they needed, checking the list a couple of times, and then being assured that they had everything, Juni then started heading towards the front. Sure enough, the whiteboards and markers were right there. Snagging a fist full of markets and a new eraser, Juni was pleased. “Next up’s the grocery store, yeah?” she asked as if she wasn’t already checking that off the list. Checking her time, she couldn’t help but smile a little. “We’re making pretty good progress.”

Thankfully it didn't take too long going through the rest of the list for the hardware store- a few things here, a bunch of stuff there, and their arsenal of tools was fully stocked! Following behind the cart and Juni, as well as keeping a keen eye out for anything else that she might need in her current project they ventured towards the counters. As everything happened Derby nodded, "Yeh, we take on the grocery store next- gotta restock kitchen and all that good stuff."
Oh? They were makin' good time? Derby pulled out her own phone to check, matching Juni's smile with a stupid grin of her own, "Damn you aint wrong, we're smashin' it out." Derby began leading out the store now, "Did we need to go anywhere else, like, other than the grocery store? Need any new like storage or nah?"
Mercifully the checkout lines had been self-checkout, and one of the registers had been open by the time they got up there. Juni was quick to scan everything and then bag it up. As they walked out, she put the cart back up at the front and shouldered the bags, handing Derby hers in turn.
“I don’t think so right now,” she answered looking thoughtful again as she tried to remember what she had. “We’ll have to see what our roommate’ll take up first I think…” As long as everything went through and according to plan, anyways. It was always a sort of shift-around when they got new people into the shared house, but it was so so so so so much better than any dormitory. At least here you got a chance to screen your potential roommates first.
Getting into the grocery store, Juni immediately found it jam packed with people… and immediately groaned softly. Why were these stories always busy anyways? “Uh….” No they really couldn’t afford to come back later, damn… “Bread first yeah?”
"Hello ladies, would you like to try some free samples?" A man with a cheese cart was standing there looking happy to be there for some reason. Well... uh... that helped, a little.

Aw yeah, Juni was right. It all depends on whatever the roommate wants. Exiting the door she swung her bags over her shoulder, shrugging slightly, "We could always like, message em, right?" Though she paused and mentally backtracked, that probably wouldn't be like, the best of ideas. "...eh... or naw, they might see it as their public info being invaded or whatever before we've even met em'."
Towards the grocery store they went! Derby kept pace with Juni, mentally going over what was neccesary only to huff at the amount of people literally everywhere. She was gonna have to do what her pops always said- elbows out, and nudge em if they get too close. "Yeah- bread nn then... fruit?"
She stuck slightly closer to Juni, if only to give the other people more room to bustle about however at the offer of free samples her eyes widened and her mouth watered- oh hell yeah. Derby immediately picked out the biggest sample she could find, givin' the man her best smile. "Aye, thanks." Snackin' always helped.
Moving forward towards the bread aisle, and popping the cheese in her mouth, Derby spoke again, "...we're gonna have to make another round for another lot of those- it's damn good cheese Juni."
Juni chewed the inside of her mouth. Just chill. It’ll be fine. It’s not like you haven’t done this before. That didn’t really sooth her, but oh well she tried. Slow, deep breath. Ok, ok then. She nodded along with Derby’s assessment. Bread than fruit—
But a free sample of cheese first. “Sounds like a plan…” was muttered back as she took up a toothpick square of cheese and immediately ate it. Oh, she was actually hungry too, fantastic. Going to have to be careful about what I buy…. Impulse buying would be the death of her otherwise.
“Oh—“ There was a free sample of bread too? Juni perked up a little and took that one too. This was…potato bread and had a weird after taste as a result, but she supposed a free sample was a free sample. “We could probably just have lunch in here if this keeps up…” Juni snorted a little on considering that. Finding the cheapest brand of bread available, she snagged a loaf and then went on to the fruits, veggies, and whatever else aisle. “Has Skye stopped being afraid of carrots yet?” she asked offhandedly.
Cheese, and bread! All that was missing now from the tasting was some damn good ale- or like wine but... yeah. "Saves buying extra stuff for lunch- oh yeah, did ya need more beer?" She trailed off, eyebrows furrowing... how stocked was the fridge again? "Like the canned stuff?" canned beer... aint nothing beat chugging it straight from the pint.
To the veggies and stuff now, Derby absently swung her arm with the bag in it, eyes flicking to one thing to another as they walked. Right, they had to check apple prices? She'd bent to peer at one cluster of apples asJuni spoke up and blinked a little, before a slightly loud, belly-laugh left her-
Oh Skye. The poor kid has some sort of vendetta against the veggie, something about how it isn't good for eyesight because it didn't grow back his eye and stuff. She pushed her forearm into her mouth to stifle her laugh, shaking her head a little before turning back to Juni, goofy grin on her face, "Aye, whaddya think? Refuses to even open the fridge if he reckons it's in there, somethin' about it jumpin' out at him, thooough..." A bemused glint flicked across her eyes for a second, "If ya wanna test if he still is, we can always hide a carrot in the house when he comes over and see if he thought it was spyin' on him?"
Turning back to the apples after she gestured to them with her head, "Whaddya think about the cost? Too expensive or naw?"
At the mention of beer more beer, Juni’s eyes flashed delight. “Always,” she answered Derby before snagging a case of her favorite Hondew berry beer along with another case of less expensive stuff. If there was one thing Juni was willing to splurge on now and again, it was good drink.
Now, though, they needed to make some decisions on fruits, veggies, and maybe even some berries depending. Derby’s belly laugh had Juni snorting a little and adjusting her glasses. Poor kiddo. She really didn’t get it, but that was fine. “Mmmmm, I’ll just keep adding stuff to smoothies then,” she answered with a certain level of dry wit.
At the gesture towards the apples, though, Juni hummed a little. They were a little on the expensive side but… “Maybe just a few of them… so long as we’re not buying like three pounds of ‘em we should be ok…” she answered slowly reading the pricing and then nodding to herself again. Yeah, that was fine. She snagged a few other less expensive fruits and then went on to the berries before deciding they were a bit too expensive right then. “Anything else?” she looked back to Derby and smiled.
Aye, Skye wouldn't notice em in smoothies! Sneak attacking it into his system was the best option. Fruit was gathered, and Derby hummed, "Those apples look damn juicy..." She was glad they were gettin' a few, they were a quick snack, something easily eaten, even if they were a lil' expensive she should be getting a hell of a lot thanks to her current job, and the worm that was her current arm situation. Standing infront of the berries now Derby adjusted her tank, tiltin' her head a little in thought.. she was like satisfied but.... "...maybe... more snacks if the kid comes over?"
The kid being Skye, but the question is... what exactly would he like? Derby began walking again, guiding herself towards the freezer section before finding herself standing in front of her childhood favourite snack. "...what about dino nuggets?" another pause, "I reckon he's about to hitta growth spurt- whats good for growin kiddos Juni?"
