Senara mumbled a brief "No shit..." to Gabe's to-the-point explanation, but didn't smile again. Nothing was medically wrong with her so far, which was great--though knowing some back-alley punk-doctor had drawn her blood wasn't stellar information to have--but also gave no reason for these "visualizations" as he called them. He gave her a couple of reasons why they might have happened. Chronic migraines was the only one that she might qualify to have, but...she only shook her head "no" at his question.
"My mother's side has a lot of mental...stuff, but chronic migraines isn't one of them. Same with my father's side. There's, uh," she swallowed a lump that started to form in her throat, "It's not possibly something to do with my undeveloped eye? Because...when I was seeing shit, I swear I felt pain in the socket. That only happens if I do something super wrong with the prosthetic, which didn't happen when...that did. It just hurt..."
"...and...it...doesn't mean something's wrong with my actual eye, does it...?"
Fear gripped her chest for a second. If something was wrong with her vision, she was already down half of that as well as her depth-perception. If she was suddenly having sight problems then...oh, God, what if she went blind? She didn't want to go blind!!
Her fingers clenched around the bed-sheets just a little too tight. Dammit to the void, she felt so vulnerable right now. Vulnerable in the worst possible way. She had even passed out in front of Gabe, in a house where they were alone, where he could have...
...did...nothing...
...and took me to a doctor...?
Senara's eye opened again and looked at Gabe, not wide-eyed in confusion, but softly staring in his direction. It was a little less gray. Still soft. Still a little sad. Why, though?
“Hm….” Nails scribbled down some information as Senara spoke. He’d pause and look up, however, as she started expressing her concerns. “Neural ocular degermation is a possibility but not a high probability given your assumed age,” he stated slowly still keeping that monotone nature to his voice. “I don’t have the equipment to assess that sort of thing here. You’d need to see an ophthalmologist.”
Gabe fidgeted. The tension of Senara was palpable right then, and this wasn’t helping. “Is there anything you can do in the meantime, Nails?” he asked.
Nails hummed a little and looked down at the notes he had taken. “You know I’m a trauma specialist, right? Not a jack of all trades…” was the soft rebuttal mixed with ever the slightest frustration. Senara might see Nails’s aura as a crisp blue wave that had just rippled with the small change in his feelings.
The question from Senara, though, had Gabe looking back at her. “Going to a hospital was going to be expensive??? And they’d ask more questions???” he ask-stated back at her clearly not understanding her question to its fullest right then.
Nails made a small ‘tut’ sound. “Hang on, let me look into something…” was all he’d mutter before retreating into an adjoining room and closing the door suddenly.
Her fears were eased just a little, but not completely removed. She hadn't had any sort of vision problems before--well, asides from the obvious. But maybe she should go into an actual doctor's office and have them check her out, just in case. If you walk into a clinic and say "I'm seeing weird shit" they don't always treat you like you're losing your mind, right? R-Right? Hell, maybe it's a Ghost Pokemon just messing with me.
It wouldn't be the first time. Ugh, Baby Girl is going to be so worried...
"Well...thank you, anyway, for what you have done. I don't know what you charge, but I can probably pay it?" Senara tried to move herself off the bed just an inch at a time, not to be getting up, no, but just so she could prop herself a little higher and not be laying so flat that her neck was straining. The trace of blue made her close her eyes again. Urgh. More of it. But...that one was different. Not flickering, more like rippling...what the...
She could ask herself these questions about the things she was seeing after figuring out why they were happening in the first place. And Gabe completely misread her, which was kind of funny, but also more confusing. Thankfully Nails either had something to do or got the hint as to what she was actually asking about and left. She gave him a small nod, then, half-sitting and half-slouched, she stared him right in the eyes with her own. She could still see the gold through the weird haze. It was changing again, too. Weird.
"No, you dumb-dumb, not why you brought me here," she emphasized the last word to be as clear as possible, "Why YOU brought ME here. I...Arceus' sake, I stole your shit and looked you up and tracked you down in the most humiliating way possible! You at least had my location, I had to look you up by your name. And I...I got way more twisted up in your personal shit than I you did mine...not that I...fuck, I didn't mean to..."
Senara placed her hands to her forehead and pushed her bangs back, holding her scalp.
"...it was not supposed to go that way at all, I just wanted to, like...just show you that you don't have all the damn cards on me, but that...girl...I screwed up, I screwed up and she got so fucking worried about meof all people, and I panicked, and I got mad, and...ugh!"
"Why did you fucking save me when you had the chance to get rid of me??"
Gabe blinked twice. Oh. Right. Yeah he probably should have read it that way the first time, but he just… he didn’t. “….” Yeah she did do all of that shit and then some. She did. She absolutely did. And the crackling of blue pigments in his aura raised and then fell again almost in tandem. He was angry but……but.
“I didn’t want you to die,” Gabe answered so honestly that the sound of his own voice was foreign in his ears. Drawing up a leg to the chair, wrapping one arm around it, and leaning his cheek on it, he sighed. His aura had darkened considerably again down to a deep purple closer to his hair color. “I like you, not in like…..” Gabe rolled his eyes, raised his hand, and gave a weird circular gesture to describe whatever it was he was trying to describe. “You pissed me off but if you died, I….” A breath in, breath out. A small, very forced laugh. “Wouldn’t have had a chance to rebuttal you for everything sometime.”
Senara didn't think she'd misheard him. At the same time, she didn't think he'd said what she heard him say. Her mind wouldn't let her believe it. When had anyone other than her Pokemon actually cared about her? People weren't cruel to her because of the act she put up, but once that was broken and stripped away she was a miserable, bitter little brat. Nobody liked that. So nobody liked her--just some face she'd gotten very, very good at wearing. He'd broken that mask when he caught her stealing from him, but instead of turning her in he'd let her go, and instead of shunning her, he'd kept coming...
A weak sound passed through her lips that didn't quite sound like a chuckle, but it slowly grew into a series of manic giggles. She kept her head down and hands tight against her head. She didn't dare look at him. She didn't want to see what color was there, if he was smiling or frowning, whatever face he was making...she didn't want to see it.
She didn't want to be here.
Obviously not, nobody likes being in a clinic. But she didn't want to be here with him.
A few more tears--this time noticed by her, but damn it all if she could stop them right now--fell from her eye and hit the sheets just below her chin. She felt the skin around and under her eye-patch wet slightly as well. Ahh...shit. "Why? Why the hell do you like me? I...nothing I have done, nothing I've been, has been likable!" Not true. She'd let him into her home, talked with him. listened to him, genuinely been kind to his Pokemon, trusted him--no, trusted Reptar, but by extension she'd trusted him--to fly her around. She didn't dislike his company. It was nice being able to take off the mask and still have somebody there to talk to. But it wasn't normal, and it wasn't right, and it was terrifying.
Haven't I been mean enough to you, yet, to scare you away from me...?
Arceus, I can't even smile.
"Nobody really likes anyone unless they have something to gain from it." Senara let loose a small scoff and shook her head. "I...I don't understand how you think. At all."
I want to scare you away.
Senara was quiet for a little bit. Then, still without looking up at Gabe, spoke in complete monotone: "I met your ex. When I looked up your name, her blog was the first thing that popped up. I read the whole thing, and I thought it would be funny--" Cruel, you thought it would be cruel. Don't lie. "--if I tried to drop off the ID at her studio. Claim you'd left it at my place and that I knew you went there. But. Guess you two had your final blow-up and she kicked you out or something. Good timing, jerk, ruining my schadenfreude."
"I had to bullshit so much to get out of there. She just..." Ah. Hahah. Maybe he would get a kick out of this. Or maybe it would be the straw that made him hate her like he should have. "...get this, she thinks we're dating. I didn't know what the fuck to tell her, so I didn't deny it. It lines up with that stupid 'internet boyfriend' line you told me to tell people, doesn't it just? Hah. And then--and then? She started fucking crying for me."
She giggled again. The sound was hallow. "I guess she thinks you're going to ruin this sweet, innocent girl with your wicked ways. Yikes, what a horrible judge of character."
Gabe’s lips parted and then immediately sealed. What was she even laughing at, damn it. His eyes averted. “I’m being serious….” was all he muttered, more to himself than to Senara then. When the questions started coming, Gabe huffed. “Why does anyone like anyone,” he answered looking back at her a small smirk. He got the answer immediately after whether it was rhetorical or not. “Congrats, nobody knows how I think, not even me.” There was some sarcasm there, but it didn’t last.
Silence fell for a little bit. Gabe found himself looking back towards the door wishing Nails would come back into the room so they could stop having this conversation. As if either by divine intervention or Nails himself hearing from the other door and wanting absolutely nothing to do with that bullshit, he didn’t come out, though.
And then Senara started speaking. Gabe’s aura flared bright, bright, bright red and orange, a real flame, for more than a few seconds. The feeling of wanting to strangle her had come back again— for going to such lengths, for doing such things. And then…. She thinks we’re dating… That fire went down again becoming a deep moody purple instead. Ruin this sweet, innocent girl with your wicked ways… That aura only darkened.
Gabe didn’t say anything for a long time but slowly sat over his knees, elbowed them, and set his face in his hands. A shaky breath drew in and out of him. “Of course she would….” he finally stated.
"Well aren't you j-just a magnificent enigma, you son of a--"
Oops.
Senara turned just in time to catch the small smirk, and had hardly a chance to regret it before there was another burst of light so bright it made everything go spotty. She let a gasp of pain out before she clenched her hands over her eyes and squeezed her palms flat against them both, pressing into her eyelids like they were all that was holding them inside. Oh FUCK that hurt. The black light from before had not been pleasant--it had been just as painful and just as strong--but the burst of flame and light had come so fast it hit her like needles directly cutting through her pupil. Her palms seemed to be helping to keep the light out, though...which made no sense! If this was all in her head then her blocking her eyes shouldn't do anything to stop it. Hallucinations didn't work that way!
...did they??
What the actual Void-fucking hell is happening to me?!
"IL BRULE, IL BRULE, IL BRULE!!" She cried, somewhere between a sob and a shriek. She pulled herself in tighter to herself, trying to keep her face in as much shadow as possible. Her head didn't feel heavy, or like she was going to pass out from the pain again, but everything still hurt so very much. "ARRÊTE ARRÊTE ARRÊTE!!" Wh--
Senara was scream-crying, and Gabe was jolting up from his chair. It toppled back loudly but not over her cry. The sound of the door slamming open made Nails’ presence known. “What happened?” Nails was demanding (even though his monotone voice made that hard to believe). Gabe looked from Senara to him and shook his head. “Shoo, out. Now,” Nails was pushing, and Gabe was tripping out back to the lobby area before the door was slammed shut behind him.
Nails whose own aura was always a crisp blue but only ever shifted in pattern and wave was now coming back towards her. “Don’t grab your eyes; let me see…” he spoke quietly, now. “Breathe… just let me see…” He really didn’t want to sedate her or anything close to that.
Senara was still dry-sobbing and whining, high and keening, when Nails came close and tried to gently move her hands away from her face. The light was gone still but she still felt the burning pain it had left behind, like she'd been staring into the sun for too long and something had fried. She did as he wanted, though, because he was a medical "professional" and she was in too much pain to put up an argument. When her hands were dropped to her laps she forced them to open as much as they could.
The pupil of her visible eye was blown wide, the corners of her eye leaking tears like it were trying to wash out something out from inside it. But she couldn't see the side of her eye protected by the eye-patch...and at a close enough distance, from around the edges of the fabric, a faint, colorless light was shining from behind it. It was dimming rapidly, though, and was gone before even half a minute had passed from opening her eyes for Nails to see. "I...it h-hurt...s...! It burns! It--it looked like f-...fire...it burned to s-...see...!"
Nails’ own eyes flashed over Senara’s drawing in details. Fire, hurts to see… His eyes raised up into the semi-dim light of the medical room. There were lamps around but no high light (if only because the building he was in didn’t actually support it). What could have been so bright? But that also sounds like…. A soft sigh escaped from him, and he looked back at Senara.
“I’m going to give you some things for the pain, alright? Prescription grade acetaminophen isn’t going to harm you.” He had had plenty of patients who were far more warry of him than Senara was. Stepping back, he went through the shelves and pulled out some medicine and some water. Intravenous was always an option, but she was conscious right then which made it extraneous. “Here…” he offered handing her the pills and the water. “It’s going to take some time to kick in but it should stop the pain eventually.”
The door opened, and Gabe peered in from the lobby. “Is she alright or….” His aura had muddied again pretty fast.
She rubbed the tears away from her cheeks, whimper still escaping from her throat. She still felt so vulnerable but she was so scared and had no idea what was going on. Was she going crazy? Why did it seem to trigger when she'd known she upset Gabe? Was it some sort of hallucination brought about by fear? That...no, she wasn't that scared of him hurting her. He'd just said he--
Senara accepted the pills and little plastic cup of water, nodding. "Th...thank you..." She took a small sip of the water first, then put the pills on her tongue before drinking down the rest, swallowing them. She closed her eyes and leaned backwards against the soft pillows again. It would take time. Yeah, duh. But time knowing it was going to go away was still better than time sitting here in agony not knowing if it would stop...would it stop? If it was just in her head would pain medication do anything for her, or would it placebo it away? Did the placebo effect work if you were possibly expecting it to happen? Umm...
She didn't open her eye when she heard Gabe's voice again but she waved her hand in the air in a dismissive gesture. ".......no thanks to you," she muttered, grumpy and sore.
It's only him. It's only coming from him. I thought I saw some from Nails but...no, it was so much more muted. The bright light's only coming off of Gabe, and only when I...
“The fuck does that mean?” Gabe asked, but there was no malice in his voice then. He was still… concerned… more than anything. Her wild screaming and Kalosian had pulled the last nerve he had right out from under him, and now he was gripping the door’s egde like he planned to rip it off its hinges.
Nails, meanwhile, looked from Gabe to Senara. “Can you explain?” he asked quietly.
Senara ground her teeth together against her cheek until it ached. For all the crime and wickedness in her life, she was a scientist at heart; she dealt with hypotheses regularly. When there was something she didn't understand she tested it. She questioned it. Sometimes it was a detriment to her own safety and sometimes it wasn't, but that was just how it worked. Her work was usually in evolutionary stones but right now...right now, there was something here she had found a pattern in. It wasn't a fun pattern and it wasn't a good feeling but it was there and she had to say it aloud, no matter how mental it was going to make her sound. Then again, this was the guy who jumped off a Charizard over a girl who...hated him. Sorta. He could judge her, but it wouldn't matter.
With a deep sigh she pointed in the direction of Gabe's voice. "It's only you. Every time I see that light it's you. I don't get anything from him. Him?" She cracked her eye open to scan for Nails before closing it again, assuming nothing pronoun-wise was said to correct her. "But when I mention...you-know-who, that light went off around you. And when I covered my eyes it blocked it out. I don't know much about hallucinations but I'm pretty sure that they should persist even if I close my eyes because, you know, they're in my head? That's not what that was like. It was like you shot a flamethrower in my eye."
Eyes, some part of her reminded helpfully. But she could only deal with one part of this conundrum for now. Being able to "see" things with the eye she'd never had was...no.
Not right now.
"Same thing back at your house when that black light happened...it was just around you. I talked to...the person at that address from the studio...right before coming to you, and to a cab guy as well. No light-show. It's just from you. I don't know what the hell that means, and I know it sounds completely fucking mental, but it's there."
Only me? Gabe’s brows furrowed. Every time I see that light, it’s you. Gabe straightened, stepped inside, and leaned against the door.
Nails gave a small “he or they is fine,” mutter in response being vaguely thankful to have been asked. He looked vaguely confused as Senara went on but chose to look sideways at Gabe instead.
Gabe, meanwhile, was frowning. Flamethrower in her eye? A weird half-breath half-laugh escaped from Gabe at that. “I wish…” he muttered. Having fire power would be the equivalent of being an actual Charizard after all (well maybe not, he still couldn’t fly but whatever). He needed to refocus. It was just him. Just… him. What did… that even …. Mean.
Nails, however, was coming to a realization. “If you focus, can you see it clearer?” he asked. “Is it just colors or shapes?” His own aura was rippling again like droplets on an otherwise crystalline lake.
“What are you getting at, Nails?” Gabe cut in.
Nails looked back at him with a questionable look before then turning his gaze back to Senara again. “Post-developmental aura sight isn’t uncommon,” he stated. “Aura is rare in the general population, but those who have it often do develop it late.” He was shifting, fishing for a notepad and starting to jot down information.
Gabe stood there with his brows furrowing— and then his eyes widening. “You’re a fucking aura guardian?” he ask-stated.
Well nobody was rushing to send her to the local psyche ward so good start. Senara's lips pursed into a thin line at that little muttered laugh from Gabe. Like she had expected better from them? Nah. But it was still a bit of a serious moment to be making jokes like that, and fell more flat now that she knew he apparently didn't want her to die? Which was a relief? It could still change but for now it was...a thing that was probably good. Nails however asked her a few more questions that made her brow furrow above her still closed eyes. "Clearer? I...it's colors, but like...like I said, it looks more like fire...but..."
Gabe cut in and asked after the heart of the matter, and Nails' response floored her.
Metaphorically. She was still laying pretty still.
But oh. Oh. OH.
Senara's eyes both opened again, slowly, still narrowed, but widened to their normal size as she looked between Gabe and Nails. She still couldn't really see anything from him. Flickers, maybe, but nothing so real or vibrant as Gabe's own colors...his aura. Aura.
...WHAT?!
"I--I don't know??" Senara responded intelligently, voice a pitch too high as she pushed herself a little more up into a sitting position. The headache/eye-ache was fading again, but she could still see it. It was still painful to look at in a way but not blinding. She tried to blink it away, or narrow her eyes and squint to made it more...defined? Sort of? But it stayed the same. "It's...I mean, like, again! My parents don't have anything special like that about them, so then I can't--I shouldn't be! And...and aura is, like, kind of....wait."
"...wait..." Her voice lowered a little and she brought her hand up to the clips in her hair that kept her eye-patch secured in place. "...wait, wait a second..." She removed it with as much care as she always did. Beneath it was, of course, the same prosthetic Gabe would remember from the Halloween dance, but she set the patch down and her hands raised back up to it. She then paused, looked up at Gabe, then Nails, and muttered: "Uh, apologies, scientific theory. This might be a little gross. Just. Just don't look at it."
She pulled her lower eye-lid downwards with one hand and covered the whole thing with the other, and once it slipped down over her lower-lashes she pulled the prosthetic out, keeping it carefully in her finger-tips. It would need a wash before she put it back in but...eh. She kept her other hand over the socket so that it was hidden behind her fingers, but there was just enough space between them that, could she, she would still see out from behind them. And when she looked up she nearly dropped her damn eye.
Ah--
She couldn't "see" it. "Seeing" was something different than...this. There was no organ in that part of her head that should be seeing, that could be seeing, but just like that the image was so much...clearer. It wasn't like a flame it was a flame, moving around his body at a gently rhythmic beat, moving more like a pulse than the crackles of a fire. The color was softer but at the same time no less bright to her eyes, but that may still be from not being used to seeing it. She opened and closed her mouth a couple times, then looked up at Nails instead. Ripples of color moved around him in cool, calm blues. It was not nearly as clear as Gabe's was to her eyes but with them both, well, open, it was at least visible and distinct. Her hands were shaking a little. Was she smiling or not?
Whatever she was she was absolutely crying again.
Hah. Damn it.
"......I see you too. I. I s-see...I'm seeing with...wh-wuh...." she giggled weakly and her eyes both returned to Gabe and the soft flickering flames, "...oh, Xerneas and Yveltal..."
“Please be careful,” Nails’ voice came as low and calm as ever as he then adjusted the pillows so Senara would have an easier time sitting up. He was waiting for something, but not even Nails knew what exactly that was.
Gabe, meanwhile, was flipping between twenty different emotions all at once, and his aura was flickering and falling in tandem. As she moved her hand to her eye, though, he quite literally turned around and faced the wall.
Nails simply gave a reassuring nod in response. He had seen worse things. Much, much, much worse things. He did glance backwards at Gabe, though, and smirked ever so slightly at the squeamishness. His gaze fell back forward again, though, and that soft seriousness returned soon enough. As she finally spoke, he gava e a small “Ah…” in response. “You have a very rare gift.”
Gabe, meanwhile, had turned around and set his hand over his mouth. His mind was going a mile a minute and then some. He wanted to make twenty different phone calls but had not contacted them in so many years that he wasn’t even sure he’d be able to. As Senara spoke, though, his hand slowly lowered, and he slowly looked back again. “Well… I guess that’s our answer…?” he asked.
"Ha-hahahahah...what the fuck..." Senara giggled again, breathless and still not quite sure she understood what was happening. A rare gift? Her? The cookie-cutter nobody like her? This wasn't how this worked. She'd only started robbing people for the sake of standing out. For the sake of being different from the rest of them. But apparently she was always different, just in the strangest way possible. Aura. Aura Guardian. I'm a...
"Not necessary" my ass, you cow!
...did she know? Is it genetic? She definitely didn't have this sort of sight, so...
...shelving those thoughts for later. Too dark for right now.
Or ever.
Senara nodded at Nails, "I, uh, yes, I g--yes! Um. Saline. Or another very gentle cleaner. Do you have saline I can put this in for a second since it touched my fingers?" She didn't feel like this was happening still. Funny how in a world of small magical creatures hurling beams of light at one-another this was where she drew the line of believability. She kept her hand over her eye just so she didn't freak Gabe out--yet--and placed her eye in whatever sanitation solution Nails might provide her. "I guess?? This is not how I thought tonight was going. Chronic migraines? Sure. Going blind? FUN. Having actual magical fucking powers...what?! I--my brain's not even catching up with this, what in the name of Arceus' shiny plates..."
Relief was starting to fill her up on top of everything else. Magic aside, she...was okay. Nothing was wrong with her. Was this the opposite of "wrong"? Coming into something that was technically a part of you that you'd just never realized was there this whole time, that...felt like the opposite of wrong alright. That felt pretty damn right. Good. Amazing.
"......HAH, it's a fire!" She blurted amid another series of manic giggles, "A fire! Gabe, your fucking aura is a FIRE! That fits so well, oh holy heeeeeell...c'est incroyable!!"
Nails blinked slowly at this sudden flip in …. personality, he guessed. Sure, yeah ok. At her question, he gave a nod and immediately went to get some cleaning solution he had on hand coming back with a cup of it rather easily.
Meanwhile Gabe was chewing the inside of his mouth. What were the odds? Did he even want to know? A hand reached to press fingers to his temple and then ruffle his own hair. He shrugged once more to himself than Senara. “Least it’s not—“ Oh, he couldn’t even say it then. Never mind then. “Yeah.” As Senara went on, he blinked a little. A fire? My aura?? She had to be referring to that but…
“Well…” Nails breathed. “Since you seem to be feeling better and we may have addressed the problem…” he shifted pulling out a card and handing it to Senara. “I charge hourly, so.”
Senara took the cup and slipped her prosthetic eye inside it, then set it to the side. She would need to wash her hands before touching that again but it would be fine. She was so much more than fine right now. Adrenaline and relief and learning you were special in some incredible way did funny things to your head. Good thing the pain-killers has been the mild sort or she would have been a wreck. "Mm. Alright! Also. If you want to slap me or something, do it now, since there's not chance my eye will fly out right now."
"I think I'm a little maniaque right now," she said off-hand and accepted the card. She closed the eye-lid of her empty socket so she could use both of her hands again. "Right, I..." Senara looked up at Gabe and frowned a little, but it didn't stay on her face for too long. "Uh, I'm going to guess my purse is on your floor, unless you grabbed it? I can wire the money to you. And. Get out of your hair, if my legs are functional. Hahah."
She was definitely not completely fine yet, though, because when she tried to turn her body around on the bed to swing her legs over, she swayed pretty badly, head suddenly reminding her that, despite the rush of good hormones in her brain right now, she had still fainted and her body was still recovering from that. It was not ready to walk solo.
“Touch my patient, and you will be sorry, Gabe,” was that quiet, monotone threat from Nails. It was hard to tell just how serious he was when his tone was like that— and possibly even harder for anyone relying solely on aura sight as said aura had stopped moving entirely for a moment.
Still, Gabe had no intention of slapping Senara or… anything right then and there, so what came was actually a strangely genuine if pained laugh. Pressing a hand to the side of his face, he inhaled and exhaled audibly. “Nails put it on my tab,” he commented aloud. Nails looked sideways at him and raised an eyebrow. “Just do it.” Nails shrugged and wrote something on the board he had.
As Senara swayed, though, Nails fidgeted. “Easy… slow down…” he murmured setting his hands on her shoulders briefly to keep her steady. “…Lay back down…” he finally decided.
Gabe mumbled something under his breath but shifted to walk a little closer to Senara— finally. “You crazy bitch…” he forced a laugh. “Took my money from a bet and now….” He chuckled a little softer, gentler. “I am going to hit you one of these days when you least expect it.”
Nails made a face before it fell neutral again.
