Nadine swayed her arms as she stepped down the grassland path, Slate walking beside her, and Flint flying above her head. The temperature was freezing, and she was bundled up in a thick wool jacket that covered her all the way down to her knees. With weather like this, a simple tank top wouldn’t be sufficient. After rushing past this route in order to deliver a latter, Nadine wanted to take the time to explore it a bit, before making her way to Cedar Town.
She was following a faded dirt path, which was lightly specked with tiny wildflowers. It was a lovely sight, and she had released her only two Pokemon from their pokeballs, so that they could enjoy it too. Luckily, neither seemed terribly effected by the cold.
The sound of rustling leaves somewhere up ahead caused Nadine’s steps to falter, before stopping completely when she heard it a second time. There was something hiding inside of the flowered greenery ahead; Nadine was certain of that. “Flint,” she commanded at the flying Pokemon above her. “Go check it out.” She needed to know if she should be ready for a battle; Flint’s scouting made that significantly easier.
The Fletchling circled a bush up ahead, a warning screech leaving his beak. Whether from fear or eagerness, a round blue form bounced out from the shrub.
“Oh, it’s a Surskit.” And a very large one, at that. After closer inspection, the wild Pokemon looked more afraid than eager, her long legs trying to take her back into her hiding place. “Wait, don’t hide!” Seemingly startled by the raised voice, the wild Surskit jumped, shooting a Bubble attack towards Slate, who stood inches away from her, to the right. It seems that it was time to battle, whether that was her original intention or not. Not that Nadine minded; this Surskit was absolutely lovely to look at, and she wouldn’t mind adding the wild Pokemon to her team.
Slate growled in irritation, before positioning himself in front of his trainer, ready for battle. “Slate, use Bulldoze.” Just as the name suggests, State used his full weight to push himself forward, bulldozing his rocky body against the wild Surskit.
The wild Pokemon’s legs trembled as she was thrown to the side, the golden point on top of her head wiggling as rain began to fall around them; she’d used Water Sport.
“Tackle!” Slate once again barreled forward, using his large body weight to throw Surskit off her feet, once again.
“Come on…” She threw a Pokeball at the Surskit, who still struggled to stand.

Nadine hissed through her teeth as the pokeball broke open, the outer shell cracked in multiple places. Despite her bashful appearance, it seemed that this Surskit has quite a bit of fight to her. It was something Nadine appreciated; and for that reason alone, she decided to try again.
Flint was still circling overhead, while Slate braced himself for battle, his large digging into the ground. “Use tackle!” The Rhyhorn ran forward, using his full weight to throw himself at the wild Pokemon. At the last moment, the Surskit dodged, but one of her feet was still jostled from the tremendous force applied by the rock type, and she stumbled forward.
“Let’s try this one more time.” Grabbing another pokeball from her belt, Nadine threw it at the Surskit.

The pokeball trembled for a moment, before becoming stationary, indicating that the wild Surskit had been captured. Nadine walked forward to pick it up, clipping the now occupied pokeball into her belt. “Welcome to the team,” she whispered as she did so. “Rest for a while.”
With that, they continued to walk on. Several hours passed, and the cold weather had become windy as well. Nadine tightened her jacket against herself, before stopping at a park bench that stood situated less than a yard away from the path. It was lunchtime, after all. Taking out two small bowls, she filled them with the generic Pokemon food that she often took with her while traveling. It filled bellies, after all.
Digging deeper into her own bag, she took out a pre-wrapped sandwich, and began to munch on it as she took in the views around her. Despite the chilly weather, this grassland was still beautiful.
Nadine’s eyes widened as she watched a group of Turtwigs wander into the same clearing as her, the leaves on top of their heads swinging with each step. They were of all sizes, from tiny to large, and seemed content to be in their group, grazing the grassland. Nadine tried to chew as quietly as she could, her eyes never leaving the wild Pokemon. It was such a peaceful sight, as well as a rare one. Turtwings weren’t the most common of Pokemon to encounter in this route.
Slate and Flint continued to eat like they didn’t have a care in the world, and truthfully, neither did Nadine. She felt beyond happy to have discovered such a rare sight.
Once the bowls were empty, Nadine chewed down the rest of her sandwich, before storing them back in her bag. It was time to keep moving.

“Come on, let’s battle!” The young girl looked up at Nadine with eagerness and excitement. They hadn’t been walking for longer than fifteen minutes when the brown haired trainer ran up to them, her eyes on Flint and Slate.
“Sure, I’ll battle you.” Nadine smiled at the girl before getting into position, several feet away from her new opponent. “Flint, you’re up.” The Fletchling flew in front of her, directly facing the opponent’s Sylveon. It was a very pretty Pokemon, even Nadine had to admit.
Sylveon started with a Bite attack, which managed to hit Flint directly. He squawked out in discomfort, before using Tackle, pushing the temporarily airborne Sylveon into the ground.

Sylveon came back with Disarming Voice, which was cut short when Flint used Quick Attack, hitting her on the chest with his beak and talons.

Sylveon used Bite once again, grabbing onto Flint’s wing. Before going onto the ground, Flint used his body weight to tackle his opponent once more, leaving her laying prone on the ground, catching her breath.

After finishing the battle, Nadine and her team kept moving forward. They’d passed the grassland area completely, and ended up in the beach; a change of scenery that she didn’t mind in the least. Had the weather been a bit warmer, Nadine might have stopped to swim in the ocean for a bit. A cloudy sky with a cool breeze made for a day in the sand, rather than the water.
“Bui…” Nadine paused at the sound, turning towards the ocean, where she spotted the owner of the voice. It was a Buizel, jumping around in the water, using it’s flippered arms to travel around. Nadine smiled at the sight.
A bump in the under the sand seemed to be moving. “Hmm? What could that be?” Nadine leaned in, curious at whatever small creature would be hiding itself under all this sand. As she leaned in closer, a Pincurchin popped up, his eyes on her. “Oh, hello there.” She smiled down at the creature. “Would you like to battle? I bet Slate would enjoy a battle before we leave the beach.” The wild Pokemon simply stared at her blankly, which Nadine took as a positive sign.
Taking several steps back, Nadine allowed Slate to step in front of her, his eyes determined and ready. “Okay Slate, use Bulldoze!” The Rhyhorn ran forward with his full weight, bulldozing his body, as well as a pound of sand, over the Pincurchin. “Oh! You covered him up completely.”
After a moment, the wild Pokemon popped his body out, before spitting a series of horns out at Slate; a Fury Attack. They hit Slate head on, and he tossed his head to the side, trying to shake them off.
“Tackle!” Slate ran towards the Pincurchin, pushing the Pokemon down with his own body weight; it was a large hit, given their size difference. Still, the Pincurchin bounced back up, spitting water at Slate while using Water Gun. Enraged by the attack, Slate Smack Down, finally knocking the wild Pokemon out against the sand. The battle was over.
“Thank you, little guy.” Nadine settled the fainted Pokemon against a small crook in the sand, before continuing down her journey.
“Oh, these could be useful.” Nadine reached down to grab the bright two-toned berries, placing them inside of her bag. Flint screeched from up in the sky, indicating that he could Cedar Town was within his view. They were close now, less than three miles to go. Clutching the straps of her bag tightly against her shoulders, Nadine made her way forward, determination in her gaze.
Their goal was close. They’d made pretty good time, a detail that made Nadine feel proud. Despite a few distractions, there was still a tiny bit of light out in the sky; dusk was upon them.
