Having finally found her way in the world, at least as far as she was concerned, Liv stood triumphantly at the edge of Birch City, hands on her hands and a self-confident smile planted on her face as if no amount of tugging would cause them to frown. Staring down the trail of Route 1 before her, she gingerly patted the satchel hanging near her hip from her shoulder, the contents delicately placed in and cushioned: a Pokémon egg. An Oshawott egg specifically. With this and her two Pokémon in their balls, she felt ready to leave and finally start her journey.
Plus, she spent a good amount of time distracted trying to find the way out of the city thanks to the multitude of amazing exhibits of nature and splendor for someone like her, so she was doubly ready to head on her way, butterflies in her stomach at the sheer excitement of it all. The possibilities! The adventure! The fun! The danger!
Maybe not the danger... but the everything else!
"All right! Time to come on out of your Pokéballs and get some well-deserved exercise with your amazing partner!" She exclaimed, tossing her Pokémon out of their containers and giving a curt little wave to Aster and Marigold. Which then turned into a massive arm pump, ending with her pointing down the road in dramatic fashion. Passerby looking on in confusion, as if she was making the objective of walking a monumental task. "You two ready?!"
Aster seemed particularly affected by Liv's enthusiasm, matching her exclamation in his own little Chespin way, hopping a bit by her side while Marigold only affirmed with a quiet 'pika' before moving forward with Liv's first footsteps into an unknown territory for them all. Adventure.
full steam ahead grubbin is so cute, why did i not know this
It didn't take long for the silence between the three to become almost deafening to Liv, both Pokémon completely content with happily walking down the route with her without so much as an utterance. Really, Marigold seemed to follow Liv no matter what side of the path she walked upon while Aster strode in front confidently, feeling like he was leading the pack. "Aster, you gotta slow down a little bit. I know we have places to be and things to do, but we can walk around and smell the roses, right?"
It was metaphorical, but that didn't really stop Marigold from striding up beside Liv, look up at her while she was preoccupied with Aster almost not stopping at all, and bee-lining to the closest flower she could possibly find. And it wasn't until a rustle in the grass near the flower that Marigold made her intentions known, emitting a loud 'PIKA' and rushing back over to Liv, nearly bowling her over. "Whatwhat what?!" She exclaimed, looking around frantically as Aster sort of gestured to the grass. Sort of.
"What in the..." Wondering what could have spooked Marigold so suddenly, Liv carelessly approached and sifted through the grass until spotting a Grubbin minding its own business, almost unaware to the Pikachu that it managed to scare. Marigold, peeking around Liv's body, visibly relaxed as Liv had to stifle a chuckle. Walking around with a team of Pokémon was already much more fun than on her own, and reaching out to pat the Pikachu on the head reassuringly, Liv gave the wild Pokémon a little wave. "Hi there, little Grubbin. Sorry if Marigold scared you or anything, but we're just going to be on our way. Enjoy... whatever it is you're doing!"
And Aster was already beginning to walk away. "Aster, slow down, I said!" He does, but off they go.
Instead of passing the walk in more silence like before, Liv had taken to humming to herself while trailing behind the leading Chespin, Marigold close behind the both of them. The earlier encounter that had so thoroughly spooked the Pikachu behind them, the three of them seemed to be having a good time on their little excursion. It seemed that her humming might have been louder than she thought, breaking it off suddenly as it became obvious that the three of them weren't alone any more.
Turning her head to the source of movement to the side, Liv perked up as she squinted, trying to see if she could piece together the sudden mystery presented. Both Aster and Marigold moved closer to their trainer, only hanging close instead of taking any initiative of their own as the source of said sound made itself known. The Zangoose that began walking toward the group seemed interested in what was going on, approaching them with no real care about sizing them up or anything like that. It just approached.
"Oh? You're approaching us?" Liv smiled at the Pokémon, gesturing to her partners to stay put. Aster didn't have to be told twice as he stood his ground, only reaching out to stop Marigold from following Liv as she began to approach the Zangoose as well. The wild Pokémon didn't seem to have any real ill intent, just curiosity. Kneeling down to meet it at eye level, Liv hummed to herself in thought, which seemed to perk up Zangoose's curiosity again.
Which gave her an idea.
"You're just curious about all the noise, huh? Well, if you're really curious, you can come along for the ride, no strings attached," she offered, reaching for a Pokéball from her satchel. "I mean, besides joining us. I guess that's a string. How's about it, little guy?" She tosses the ball to the Zangoose lightly to see how it might respond to being captured.
full steam ahead ain't no party like a zangoose party
The sight of the Pokéball indicating capture brought a bright, wide smile to Liv's face as she nearly danced up to the device, picking it up and immediately letting the Zangoose out to accompany its new companions. As the Pokémon appeared before them all, Aster and Marigold slowly approaching behind Liv now that everything seemed well done and over with, the Zanegoose looked up to Liv, tilting its head. It held up its side of the deal, right? So where was the ride?
"Welcome aboard, friend!" Liv started, holding a hand out toward the Pokémon as if to shake her hand. But instead, she quickly patted her on the head and let out a hum, not unlike the one that piqued Zangoose's attention. "All of my friends have their own names, soooo... how about Freesia? Do you think that fits the bill?"
The newly appointed Freesia let out a cry of acceptance, the first and only noise she'd made so far. That was good enough for Liv, turning to her other two partners and quickly introducing each other. After their short introductions, which mostly ended up with Aster and Freesia quickly warming up to each other, Liv pointed onward. "Okay! No sense in staying here all day, so let's get moving and show Freesia how we roll!"
Which was just walking. Again. But at least things were more lively.
Traveling was becoming nothing short of a peaceful endeavor after adding Freesia's likes to the party, though she didn't do anything particularly fun. But having three partners with her, and a warm egg that could hatch at any moment in her bag, was such a reassuring thing that Liv felt like she was having the time of her life for the first time in a very, very long time. Despite acting far younger her age by walking in a line with her Pokémon, humming to herself, and occasionally considering trying to put her sunglasses on her new Zangoose, she felt free.
And she was sure that Freesia would look amazing.
Her train of thought was interrupted by another noise from the side, though it sounded more like it was coming from above—and fast. Liv stopped in her tracks, opening her mouth to tell her Pokémon to hush, but it was so suddenly stopped by the appearance of a Cramorant, landing from flight and sliding to a stop between Aster and Marigold. It was shocking, and especially frightening to the Pikachu, but all five of them felt stuck as no one moved.
The only thing that moved was the Cramorant's eyes. Which locked on to Marigold like a submarine locked onto a target. Almost like its eyes were full of hunger. Which was off-putting enough to Liv, who was beside Marigold, but especially off-putting to the Pikachu in question. As she tried to take a step back toward Liv, the wild Pokémon took a step forward toward the two, which made Liv jump the gun in order to try and shield the poor Pikachu. "Aster, do that thing! That... uh..." She was panicking, maybe a little bit. It wasn't as if she'd ordered Aster to attack or anything before. "Vine whip!"
Since Aster was now behind the Cramorant, having been leading the charge down Route 1, he had some element of surprise as he did as his trainer asked, rushing at the wild Pokémon and attacking it suddenly and quickly, though it didn't have a huge effect immediately. Only in turning its attention to the Chespin, who received a hardy peck to his chest in retaliation. That was enough of a sudden wake up call for the inexperienced trainer in Liv to stand up and start running toward Aster. "Oh, no you don't, you rude bird! Someone's gonna have to teach you a lesson and that might as well be me!"
Damn, she's kind of cool sometimes.
"Aster, try it again, but in the noggin!" Catching himself on his feet, Aster nodded. HE wouldn't have thought to do that himself, but it seemed like a good enough idea as the Cramorant was beginning to eye Marigold again. Whipping it right in the back of the head, maybe that would be enough to knock it off-balance. Maybe enough to... "Okay, I got this... Aim, and..." Taking a Pokéball, Liv was hellbent on teaching this Cramorant how to behave. And what better way than to catch it? So, she threw the ball right at it, though she wasn't sure if it was weakened enough. She hoped so.
As the Pokémon burst forth of the ball, it immediately took to the air to escape being surrounded by the group. Liv grit her teeth, opening her mouth to call out after it, a bunch of names flooding her mind to yell out as sort-of-expletives—it was her first real failure at catching a Pokémon after all, and it was one that she tried battling too. "Hey, get back—!!" But the moment she began to stomp along the ground after it, to not avail of course, something in her satchel began to stir and rumble. In the heat of the moment, she forgot what things she'd put in there, only to feel something banging against her hip.
Instinct took over.
She reeled, throwing the strap off her shoulder and carefully tossing it into a bush nearby as she let out a loud yelp. Loud enough to startle even Freesia, who normally didn't show much outward emotion except for the occasional confusion or curiosity. "Something got in my bag! Wait, the egg!" Except she hadn't put two and two together quiiiiite yet. She was more concerned for the egg, instead of thinking about it. "Freesia, do you wanna go... check it out, maybe?"
The Zangoose nodded, shaking off the startling cry that came from her trainer, and meandered over to the satchel, still quivering and shaking as some small scraps erupted from the opening. Lifting the latch to it carefully, Freesia revealed its contents upon the ground. Another pair of sunglasses, some notebooks, and an Oshawott. A rather small one too, that came tumbling out and simply smiled up at Freesia.
Before the Pokémon could even react, Liv dashed over faster than she'd ever dashed before, scooping up the newly hatched Pokémon like a baby. "Oh Arceus, you're just precious! Why didn't you make it more obvious that you were coming out?" Yeah, because that was on the Oshawott. "C'mon, let's introduce you to everything great about the world, okay? Alder? How's that for a name?"
Seemed like she got over being startled pretty quick, beginning her way back down the Route. And in a panic, Aster would grab the satchel and drag it along behind him, Liv far too distracted to remember for the time-being.
It wasn't until Liv drew closer to the one of the rivers flowing through Route 1 that she noticed that she didn't have her satchel, a moment of panic shooting up her spine as she cradled the newly hatched Alder. Carefully setting him down—and he feeling more than ready to walk alongside the group instead of being carried the entire way, joyfully hopping alongside Marigold—Liv finally turned to see Aster dragging it along. "Oh... it's a little dirty, but... thank you so much, Aster," she sighed in relief, reaching out to take the Chespin's mighty burden. And picking out some egg fragments from it too.
The water behind the distracted Liv began to shift as the top of a Qwilfish popped out, scanning the group with a stern, almost threatening look. Marigold began to pat Liv's leg, almost annoying her when she nearly pricked her finger on one of Alder's egg fragments. "What's wrong?" She looked down, following the Pikachu's gaze over to the water and realized that, once again, they were not alone. At least this one wasn't trying to eat one of her Pokémon?
"Hey, there..." She shifted the bag onto her shoulder and began to walk toward the wild Pokémon, hands up defensively to try and show no harm. "We're just trying to get past here, is that okay with you?" Despite her attempts to sound harmless, she was approaching the water at a faster pace than the Qwilfish liked, a bit of her earlier frustration with her bag showing through. Without much warning, it fired water from its mouth at Liv, causing her to scramble backward and fall down. "Okay! Okay, have it your way! Marigold, use Thundershock!"
Only with a single moment of hesitation, Marigold ran forward and did as her trainer asked, the electricity erupting forth and hitting the Qwilfish, and very quickly spreading out along the water. The wild Pokémon didn't cope very well with it, submerging under the water—and despite the bubbles coming to the surface—soon disappeared entirely. "Oh, right. That was really effective, wasn't it?" Liv mused to herself, picking herself up and affectionately petting Marigold's head. "Come on, let's go before it comes back."
The group picked up the pace and headed further, Alder happily trailing a bit behind.
full steam ahead just a normal capture attempt in here
Now a bit further along the trail, Liv decided that keeping up the quick pace to get away from any Qwilfish retribution was probably a mood long since passed, so she started to slow her pace to let her partners catch their breath. She could take longer strides than them after all. Not because she was getting tired. Nope. Not a factor.
Crossing her arms and turning back to her Pokémon, she noticed something peculiar. Alder had fallen behind quite a bit, which in hindsight probably made a lot of sense since he seemed like a soft boy who wouldn't ruffle any feathers if he fell back, and he had hatched only so long ago. But that wasn't what really got her attention. Alder was straight up distracted, poking his precious little head to the side and... making noises at something?
It had to be another wild Pokémon. Wait, was Alder even strong enough to defend himself?
By the time Marigold, Aster, and Freesia caught up to Liv and stopped to see what she was staring at, Liv was already speeding back to Alder's side to try and stop him from doing anything stupid. But what she found was a Chewtle just... laying there and letting Alder run his mouth, like he was telling some kind of long winded, excited story about something only an Oshawott would know. This Chewtle was just letting it happen, laying on the ground and occasionally looking to Liv as if she had some control over the situation. He seemed totally harmless.
And well, the last Pokémon that she ran into that seemed harmless was happy enough to join the party, so... while Alder was still going on about something with his little noises, Liv took out an empty Pokéball and just tossed it onto the Chewtle's head. Might as well try.
full steam ahead chewtle is the greatest turtle of all time
As the Pokéball finished its job, Liv was nothing short of visibly surprised. Alder, on the other hand, was surprised in a different way. The Chewtle that he was talking to not only suddenly disappeared, but was now trapped in a ball and definitely not receptive to whatever conversation they were having any more. He looked up to Liv, a visible disappointment etched onto his face that nearly broke her heart. Reaching down to grab the Pokéball, she let the Chewtle out and about, which just about immediately cheered Alder up enough to hug the poor thing.
"I guess we have a new partner, so... new name... Lily? As in Water Lily, because you're a water-type. That okay with you?" She spoke aloud, looking down at the Chewtle who made no real visible confirmation either way. Liv took that as a yes.
Looking back to her other partners, Liv gave a wave for Alder and Lily to follow before reuniting with the rest of the party. Now surrounded by five Pokémon after leaving Birch City with only two, Liv felt like she had a real family gathering around her on her adventure, and it brought the widest smile to her face. It almost looked like a shit-eating grin at times, but that didn't stop her.
"Let's go, everyone!" And off she began to march, all five Pokémon following her closely, though Alder continued 'speaking' Lily's ear off the entire time.
Walking alongside five Pokémon, one being newly hatched and very friendly, was beginning to become something of a chore. Opting not to back down on letting them roam free of their Pokéballs despite how hard it was to keep track of them all at once—she did lose Alder for a few minutes before catching Lily, after all—she chose to instead walk around on high alert and let her partners entertain themselves on the walk. That was the only way to really entertain the idea of freedom and being able to explore to their hearts content, but it also meant that Liv was paranoid of wild Pokémon attacking when she least expected it.
Despite her best efforts, she didn't notice the Mantine poking its head above water, carefully watching the group from one of the rivers running through Route 1. Instead, Liv was entirely focused on making sure Lily kept up with the group. As they began to cross over the water, the wild Pokémon began to call out, submerging when Liv looked up from Lily's slow meandering. Frowning, she went back to making sure all of her partners stuck together, only to be distracted again by the call of what sounded like a Pokémon, but finding nothing but water.
Beginning to become agitated, Liv walked over to the edge of the water. "Either I'm going crazy, or someone's messing with me," she murmured to herself, squinting her eyes as she saw a strange shape under the water begin to move around. As if it were going to charge out of the water. "Oh! Oh no! Not right now!" Liv almost leapt backward, jogging in reverse as she gestured for her Pokémon to follow.
"You're not getting me this time, you... you!" Considering the last Pokémon that popped out of the water attacked right away, Liv was in no mood for that. She was out of there, her partners following, albeit confused. Except for Alder, who decided to hop along backwards like his trainer, and managed to catch sight of the Mantine surfacing one more time, seemingly happy about this outcome.
But Liv was having none of it, she just had to keep going.
