There was always a first step to everything. No matter how big a goal or dream was, there was always that first little step forward. Sometimes it was on flat ground, sometimes up or even downhill. But everything started with that single step forward, and for Sonia that had been gathering up the courage to tell her father that she wanted to strike out on her own. Of course her father hadn't minded, he encouraged it in fact. Sonia had gone on family vacations throughout the various regions, even if they were for just short periods of time. But during her over twenty years of life, Sonia hadn't really left the house. Even after finally growing out of her proneness to illnesses, she hadn't left for more than day trips.
So asking her father if he was alright with her going to a totally different region, might as well have been a big leap for her. But Sonia was taking it in stride, having found a place to stay that her father was happy to pay for the rent until she was on her feet. And now, now she was handling the first step to her first Pokemon. The first step to the new life she had desired for herself.
"Professor Holly is Arciel's Professor." Sonia's lips may have moved like she was talking to herself, but her conversation was purely in her own head. "I better hurry, my appointment was at two." Her blue eyes finally left her notepad, tucking it back into the blue sash around her waist. She pulled the sleeves of her light blue jacket closer to her hands, her thin white gloves not helping much against the chill. But at least her beige Jean's had leggings underneath to keep her comfortable now.
"I wonder what Pokemon she will pick for me." Sonia thought to herself for the umpteenth time as she finally spotted the door to the lab and hurried over. She'd been out for a good half hour at this point, wanting to get familiar with her new home. But now, she just sought out warmth. So she hurried over to the door, knocking audibly.
Once she was let inside, she pulled out her notebook to show them, signing 'hello' as she did. "Hello, I'm Sonia Antoni. I had an appointment for two?" She smiled as she held her notepad out.
(( I'd like to pick the Standard selection with Psychic typing preference please :) ))
The assistant that had let Sonia in read the words on her notepad with some curiosity, but seemed to perk up in understanding well enough and bid her take a seat while she went to get the professor. When she returned she attempted some sign language that was probably a little clumsy and made no sense, but was stopped in her attempts by the professor striding up behind her carrying a small trunk under her arms.
"Sonia Antoni, I presume? You don't have to do that, she can hear us perfectly well," The blonde woman said to her assistant, who flushed and hurried to excuse herself. Once they were alone Holly turned her attention to the girl waiting and opened the case that she was carrying, revealing three pokeballs.
"I've picked out three pokemon for you," She continued, setting the trunk on the nearby table and taking each pokeball in turn to release them. "Here are your starter options."
Sonia's smile brightened just that little bit more before she was lifting the fingers of her flattened hand to just below her lips and gesturing it towards the assistant. The sign for 'thank you'. She didn't want to be rude, but she couldn't help but look around as she was lead inside. It was so different in here. Then she sat patiently, not wanting to rush anyone as she gently tugged a braid out from her hood to twirl with the tip. The blonde was still quite anxious, but also excited? The conflicting energies causing her hands to shake and her foot to bounce.
She was surprised when she didn't have to wait that long. Surely the Professor was a busy woman? So Sonia stood, bowing politely in greeting though she very quickly changed her tune when the assistant tried to sign back to her. The motions didn't follow through properly, and the hand positions weren't quite right. But it was the Professor herself who spoke up, saying that Sonia could hear just fine. Sonia gave several quick nods, bowing again in apology as the assistant was quick to leave.
Sonia looked to the Professor again, nodding her head and signing another thank you.
And then the energy really began to flutter around her stomach, nerves getting the better of her. Three pokemon were picked for her to choose from. And while she had seen pokemon before, this was so much different. One of these would be coming with her. And they were all quite cute in their own way, not that she she knew all the names of the pokemon.
The Gothita bounced with joy and energy, looking in general just happy to be out of the ball. The Mime Jr waved happily to the girl before quizzically looking at the other pokemon. Bug it was the horse, the Ponyta, the demanded attention right away. They were the largest of the trio, and they were very quick to boldly butt their head against Sonia's leg, pushing against her before trotting around the space provided.
"Wow, this is amazing." The girl thought, totally awestruck by the pokemon. At least until the Ponyta lipped at her loose braid before giving it a tug. It hurt, a shock of pain that caused her to gasp. At the sound the Ponyta let go and all three looked at her with various degrees of worry. But, as if it would take away the pain once again the pony butted his head against her, and this time knocked her over with his larger size.
Sonia was only shocked for a second before she was petting at the pony that so eagerly demanded her attention, laughing silently all the while. Looking up at the Professor Sonia gestured to the Ponyta. She would like this on please!
Holly waited as the trainer assessed the Pokemon in her own way and then made her selection known. “Very well,” she answered, returning the other two and handing over the third’s Pokeball. “You should consider giving him a name.” And perhaps a sign name in this case. Holly turned and went to a shelf where a box lay in waiting. Taking it and holding it forward, Holly explained. “I have prepared some items to help you on your journey. Use them wisely.” With that, the Pokeballs and potions were handed over. “Do you have any questions for me specifically— about your new Pokemon or otherwise?”{/b]
Sonia was actually sort of sad to not have picked one of the other two. Would they be here long while they waited for a trainer to pick them too? They didn't seem sad or unhappy being here, so maybe her worries were unfounded? It was hard to say, but she could tell that all of them would have been a good choice. She was given the ball, and she took a moment to stare in wonder. There was so much technology behind the little machine, and a lot she didn't understand behind. Didn't make it any less interesting to hold.
Oh, right! That was also a thing trainers did! But she hadn't thought of a name before her arrival here, and she didn't want to take up too much of Holly's time. What was the first word that she could come up with that would suit this little guy. Thre was so many ideas already. Cute, fluffy, cloud, mischief, but none of those were right. There was a spark, and it just felt right.
She purposefully slowed her motions as she spelled out the name. Valiant, or, the sign for V over her heart, she turned, gesturing to get the Ponyta's attention. She wanted to try something she hadn't done in awhile, so lips moving to words that weren't even very audible she spoke. "You are Valiant." She spoke telepathically to him, words accentuated by the signs even if he didn't understand them.
Either way, it brought the Pokemon joy as he began to trot around again, kicking without a care. At least until he felt the panic and worry, turning back to the source that was his trainer. Blue eyes were wide and she lifted her hands, slowly bring them down. He needed to calm down while inside! Purple and blue eyes blinked at her before he snickered softly in complaint, but did what he was asked. Though Valiant still shifted from foot to foot, he would like to go! But she was given items that were quickly stashed away in pockets with a mental reminder she really needed a bag.
The last part, did she have any questions? Sonia looked to Valiant, but shook her head.
"No thank you, I think I'd like to figure some things out for myself. Thank you very much for all your help Professor Holly." She wrote down quickly, handing the notepad to the Professor so she could read it properly.
