Standing just outside the lab, Erin stares up at the door almost anxiously. Never having owned a Pokemon before, he's understandably uncertain about the impending next few minutes. Moving back and forth, shifting his weight from one foot to the other, it takes him a while before he manages to actually move inside, putting his most relaxed expression on in place of showing his nervousness - what if it caused a problem? What if it made him look bad, and they changed their mind? Breathing slowly, Erin schools himself to something resembling calm and makes his way through the room to look for the Professor.
Upon finding a woman, who he can only presume is her, he questions, "Hey, ma'am - are you, uh, Professor Holly? I'm Erin Valentine? I'm here for my Pokemon."
Professor Holly had been going over the notes for her next appointment when the door opens and Erin walks in. After checking over the application and the paper-clipped picture at the top, she gives a curt nod first in greeting, and then again to his question.
"Erin Valentine, I take it? Welcome."
The file she'd been perusing is tucked away into a holder up against the wall, and she moves to a nearby desk holding a brown trunk and props it open to reveal three pokeballs. She takes and releases each one in turn, revealing the pokemon within.

When Professor Holly (he's right, as it turns out!) lifts her head to greet him, Erin exhales long and deep - like he'd been holding a huge breath for the last several minutes, only now giving himself permission to unleash it. His face breaks into a smile, and he notes. "Yeah, yes ma'am, that's-- that's me, yes." Wow, he sounded kind of stupid, repeating himself like that.
Shaking his head, he closes the distance between them curiously, his eyes falling upon the three balls as they're revealed to him. There's very little time to wonder what's in them, as the Professor makes quick work of showing them off, and he takes some time to consider his options; all three of them were cute, but who would... be best?
Kneeling down in front of Marill, he holds his hands out towards it, palms up -- to which the Marill responds by staring, and then, slowly, placing its little paws onto them. Or, as best as it can, considering how fat and round the thing is. This is enough for Erin, who promptly says, "I want this one."
She doesn't mind the repetitiveness; Arceus knows she seen plenty trainers before, each one about as colorful as the last. It was sort of par for the course when it came to new trainers selecting their first pokemon. Just another case of the nerves.
She stands watching him as he made his selection. The Marill got a bit of a brow raise since up until recently it hadn't been classified as a fairy type, so it was a little... nontraditional, but it was still a valid choice. With a nod she returns the other two to their pokeballs to await their future trainers and close the trunk on the desk.
"Excellent choice," She says, moving around behind the desk the trunk's on to get to the supplies she had stored for every potential trainer that walked through the lab's doors. "You should consider giving it a name.
"I have prepared some items for you to help you on your journey. Use them wisely." Some pokeballs and potions were passed over the trunk in offering to Erin, and she looked up at him critically.
"Do you have any further questions for me, or would you like to start your journey?"

When the little hand slappies are finished, like an impromptu, but still very secret and well practiced, handshake, Erin offers the Pokemon a faint rub atop his head and rises to his full height, briefly rubbing at his neck as he follows along behind the Professor to the desk, though he doesn't move past it. That'd be pretty rude. Behind him is the rhythmic plap of slightly-rubbery feet as the Marill follows after him like some kind of parade line, and he considers a name for it.
He'd never named anything before - didn't it have to be important? Special? Worth-while? As he watches Holly unpack the supplies, his brow is knit beneath his mop of hair and he seems to be struggling as he turns to look towards the Pokemon, who just looks back with a small, very cute smile, and a twitch of his bubbly tail.
"Buoy," he nods, amused, "Y'know, because he's a boy? And buoy-- like, it's funny, and kinda cute, right? And--" He shuts up as she asks him another question, and he seems to shy away slightly as he takes the supplies held out to him, putting them away then. "Uh, no, I think I'm okay. Thanks, though..."
