After his failure to qualify for the season opener, Josh made sure to spend plenty of time practicing on Cedar's Slim Line track for the weekend race. He ran the course once with each of his Pokémon: Saber, Nitro, and Twilight all got to try a run at it. Blitz even ran alongside Saber for fun. The track itself felt tame both in practice and in qualifying - there was just one point of interest where a Pokémon could potentially catch air if running too fast. Highly aggressive racers could potentially use it to cut a corner, but no one was doing that in Silver League - not when the penalty for failure was disqualification.
Yesterday, Josh and Saber had finished qualifying, posting the 20th fastest overall time and the sixth-fastest individual lap, giving him a position on the starting grid. Granted, it was 14th place out of the 18 permitted on the track by Federation guidelines, but he was on a Sunday stage to a crowd that was already filling the bleachers surrounding the line. Unlike Bass' track from the opener, this one was contained completely within city limits, built into the largest public park the municipality had to offer.
The scale was much smaller than Bass' Intersection track, but that didn't make the lap times any shorter - that long, uphill left turn on the backstretch was as brutal as it looked. The smaller scale did come with one advantage - most of the track was visible from any of the three sets of stands. though there would be coverage on the vidscreens surrounding the control tower.
While the race would not be broadcast on national television, the Federation was able to secure a block of local TV time. The race would be broadcast on a local Arcielian channel, and the coverage would make its way to the internet eventually. It was still nearly an hour and a half before the green flag was to drop, some of the more famous local racers already talking with fans and interviewers.
Josh was on the track's green, adjusting Saber's riding gear alongside the seventeen other racers. He had no sponsors as of yet, so his racing suit and helmet bore a simple yellow-on-purple lightning motif with the number 243. He flipped his visor up when he was done and looked around to scout the competition. Most of the Pokémon in the race were pretty standard fare, but there was a Glaceon that caught his interest, the misting ice shard in its tail glinting in the bright sunlight. Ice Pokémon were known for their superior handling, which would be valuable on such a narrow course. All set to go, he wandered the green, keeping an eye on the time as event staff started one last sweep of the track to make sure it was clear of debris.

When Elliot heard that Josh would be having a race, he knew he needed to get right back down to Cedar Town and check it out. He hadn't set foot in the town since he had first embarked on this journey. It was amazing how much had changed in a little over a month! In that time he had gotten so much stronger, so much more confident, and still had absolutely no idea what he wanted to do with his life. Had Josh gotten further in his ambitions in this time, too? This would be Elliot's chance to find out. And frankly, he was excited.
He had picked a spot near the top of the bleachers. With there only being three rows, he'd still be quite close to the action, but he'd also have the best shot of seeing as many angles of the track as possible. With how all over the place these races could be, Elliot knew he'd have to keep an eye out to see Josh from all of the angles he could be coming around on. As always, Echo sat by the boy's side, this time hoisting up a big sign that said "GO JOSH!" She wiggled and waved it around for emphasis, but with how big of a sign it was and how tiny her arms were she couldn't really do it for more than a few seconds. Nevertheless, every time she stopped, it'd only be seconds before she started giving it another try.
After scanning the horizon and seeing where the racers assembled, Elliot finally noticed where Josh had joined the line-up. "Way to go, Josh! You can do it!" he called, surprisingly loud and energetic for someone usually so demure. He must have really wanted to make sure that Josh could hear him! Nevertheless, he kept his little cheer brief. The race was starting soon! It'd be better not to distract him.
The pair of interviewers made a few loops around the eighteen racers and their Pokémon, stopping to ask several of the competitors some questions. Josh overheard the names of a few sponsoring breeders, and even one who was being sponsored by a small sporting goods retailer that he had never heard of. Perhaps it was an Arcielian chain? None of them wanted to interview him, it seemed. Perhaps he needed to make a name for himself first? After all, he only had one fan he knew of for now.
That fan was in the audience, all the way in the top row just past the checkered line marking the starting position. When the field was called to assemble, Josh climbed back onto his electric-type Pokémon, guiding him as close to the foam wall as possible before turning to Elliot and Echo. Saber barked toward the two, Josh waving. His yellow and purple suit was distinct among the field, making him easy to spot.
Fifteen minutes remained until the dropping of the green flag, and the competitors started to line up in qualifying order. The race's MC, in a skybox above Elliot's seat, started calling out the names of racers and Pokémon, in reverse qualifying order. After each person's name was called, the respective jockey and Pokémon took their position behind the line, forming rows of four, with the fifth row only consisting of two.
"Qualifying 14th position in the time trials, from Goldenrod, Johto, Josh Devlin and Saber, his Manectric!" the male announcer's voice echoed from above. Mild applause followed. His skin tingled more than normal - while his suit helped repel some of the static, it didn't seem to help enough. Nerves, perhaps? After all, it was his first race in Arciel's leagues - he had little clue how competitive it would be. He took his position next to a Stantler and Sawsbuck, the grass-type's antler-flowers just starting to bloom.
The competitors assembled one by one, the Glaceon last to advance. "Qualifying pole position in the time trials, from Ash, Arciel, Raye Higgins and Crystal, her Glaceon!" Wait, the Glaceon was on the pole? Sure, ice-types could turn on a dime, but they didn't have the greatest endurance, and on such a narrow track, there would be a lot of unavoidable contact. Then again, neither did Saber, but he could go from a standstill to a full gallop in a split second, it seemed like.
Standing above the starting archway was the race's marshal, a green flag in her hand. A yellow light on the far left of the archway illuminated, signaling the competitors to get ready. Josh waved at Elliot one last time before flipping his helmet's visor down and burying his hands in his mount's yellow fur. Knowing how quick Saber was as an Electrike, he would need to hold on tight to withstand the acceleration. A red light came on next to that one, giving racers the three-second warning. A second, then a third came on, followed by a green on the far right and the waving of the green flag. Josh slammed his heels into Saber's flanks, sparks flying from the electric canine's paws during the ensuing dash forward. With blistering acceleration, he found himself in the top half of the field as the track started to narrow already...

Elliot and Echo cheered uproariously as Josh took off like a lightning bolt. He had already cut to the front half of the pack, Saber's pure acceleration giving him the boost he needed to take such a commanding early position. Not knowing the subtleties and quirks of Pokemon races just yet, as far as Elliot knew this was a perfect sign. If Josh could go from 14th to contesting for the lead in such a short period of time, then there was no way he'd be kept out of the lead for long. Echo flailed her sign from side to side, jumping up and down a little for emphasis, while Elliot traced Josh's path across the field.
The pack was still very tightly-arranged, and the path was narrowing more and more with each second. Elliot had no idea what to expect from this, but he knew that Josh's path forward wouldn't be as easy as he originally thought. Nevertheless, he wasn't going to give up on Josh just yet, even if he was getting a little bit nervous! Surely, the experienced Pokemon rider would have a trick or three up his sleeves.
He leaned forward a little in his seat, excited to see how Josh would get himself out of this one.
Between Saber's whiplash-inducing acceleration and contact with other competitors as the two rapidly advanced in position, it would be a lie if Josh said he wasn't feeling a bit dazed. Anyone would. He managed to make it to the third row, Pokémon running two-wide into a straight-but-narrow tunnel on the course's east side. While it was possible to go three-wide in an effort to pass, it would be very risky, and probably something he would only attempt toward the end of the race.
Josh's goal was to get in the lead before the end of the first lap and hold it with finesse. Saber was capable of Quick Attack chains much like Twilight, his were far slower; they wersn't too much faster than simply running. The electric canine powered through the uphill tunnel, passing not one, but two Thievul to get to the second row. The two remained content to run alongside a Stantler, keeping a Sawsbuck and the Glaceon leader in sight as the tunnel ended.
The course was now particularly narrow, continuing to gain altitude until it reached its peak after two quick left turns. A Meganium toward the middle of the pack misjudged the first turn, its rider's momentum flinging her over the foam walls and into an off-course safety net. The grass Pokémon was quick to leap after the trainer to make sure she was okay. Not even fifteen seconds into the first lap and there was already a retired runner. Brutal, but that was the nature of the beast.
Josh pulled back on Saber as the two were cresting the big hill, one of the Thievul taking the Manectric's hesitation as an attempt to pass him. He was very quick to cut the wily fox off not once, but twice. Next was the reason why he eased up - there was a big drop-off that was very easy to trip or even catch air on if a Pokémon came into it with too much speed.
EdHxziidp_ {97} + 15 = 112
When Saber took his first steps down the steep slope, he didn't even as much as slide. He again cut off the Thievul before coasting down the slope, the yellow Pokémon using his momentum to run faster than his legs could normally carry him. His added speed let him pass the Stantler as well as giving him a great view of Sawsbuck and Glaceon fighting for the lead. He just had to take the lead soon and use Saber's maneuverability to cut other Pokémon off while in the lead - once boost laps started, if a Pokémon got in front of him, there was no catching up.

It was literally blink and you miss it. One moment there was a Meganium on the track, the next minute it and its trainer were in the safety net at the sidelines. Echo didn't even see what happened, rubbing her eyes as she tried to figure it out, but by the time she could even process what was going on the racers had already moved on. This was way too intense for to understand! Even Elliot was finding it tricky to keep up what's been going on, though he made sure to block out as much visual noise as he could by focusing on Josh. Maybe it was better this way. Now Echo could let him know if anything interesting happened while he made sure that Josh was still in it to win it.
And in it to win it he was! He took a killer curve like a champ, getting around a less fortunate Thievul that had previously been cutting him off. With so many other Pokemon stumbling through the curve instead of taking it so gracefully, that left Josh going from the top half to the top three. The other Pokemon seemed more interested in preventing each other from taking the lead than they were at looking behind them, but their back-and-forth was also taking up a lot of the path. Would Josh be able to get around them before the path narrowed again, or would he end up missing his chance at the lead?
After a long, uphill right turn, the field reached a short, straight stretch where Josh could somewhat relax. It gave Elliot a good look at him, too - all the racers would look like they were running directly at him for a few seconds. The Meganium in front of Josh made some daring moves to try to pass the Glaceon, using every bit of track width available to her. The ice-type and rider were proving to be a very skilled duo, indeed - able to keep one step ahead every time. Contact ensued, the female atop the green Pokémon letting out a cry as her right leg briefly brushed against the foam on the inside of the track, but the two competitors battling for the lead nonetheless maintained their balance.
The foam walls on the next section of the track were painted green with yellow caution arrows pointing left, giving racers a visual cue to prepare for a brutal, uphill left curve that lasted three-quarters of a full circle. Josh and Saber stayed centered on the track, the rider ready to shift his weight hard left with the proper timing.

Saber's form entering the turn was excellent, passing the Meganium at the beginning of the lengthy curve. The young racer had his sights set on the lead, closing the gap between himself the blue ice-type. The boy let out a loud cry while Saber climbed the inside of the tight turn, the speed at which Saber ran up the hill put a great deal of pressure on his left leg. The worst part of it all was by the very nature of an uphill turn, the end of it was blind. Josh misjudged the end of the curve, his left leg dragging against the safety foam on the inside and slowing Saber quite a bit, the Meganium passing him again. The female riding the ice-type relaxed a bit as the two started to pull away from the pack and build a lead of over a half-second.

While most of the pack was still far behind Josh, the Meganium and Glaceon in front of him were still posing quite the problem. Frankly, Elliot was surprised, especially by the Meganium. They didn't seem much like runners in the slightest, and yet this one was able to keep pace with two far faster-looking Pokemon. If Elliot wasn't already here to cheer somebody on, this new challenger would have been on his radar. However, he was ultimately loyal, so instead he kept his eyes focused on Josh. Come on, he had to pull ahead!
And yet unfortunately he didn't. He took a turn so fast that he had grinded himself against the wall. That couldn't have felt good at all! Was it even safe to take the turn that fast? Elliot and Echo cringed at the sight, before peeking back to see how Josh was doing. He had fallen back into third, the Meganium dashing past him yet again, and had lost a lot of the momentum that had gotten him into the lead in the first place. Would the rest of the pack come charging up? Or would Josh be able to push forward again? His Pokemon was quick to accelerate, but from the curved angle he was at such a feat seemed easier said than done.
Nevertheless, Elliot and Echo cheered up a storm. He'd pull through! They know he could!
After the long, uphill turn was a straight stretch where Saber sound just run for a few seconds, the track widening to normal size and letting the back half of the field shift a bit more. It gave Josh a chance to catch his breath, his knee still throbbing a bit after that run-in with the wall. Much of the rest of the field seemed to have trouble as well, one of the Thievul that was making a run at the early lead sliding almost all the way to the back.
Back in the rear half of the field young racer on a Sawsbuck misjudged the long curve in the opposite direction, causing a wild chain of collisions midway through. While half a dozen racers' Pokémon had to slow down to avoid a hard bump with an opponent, none of them could avoid a collision altogether. Many of their Pokémon tripped and struggled to keep their balance, but ultimately recovered. The grass-type, though, had sprained one of its legs, and badly. Disappointed, the racer recalled her Pokémon, walked back to where there were no tall walls, and slid off the short railing into the safety net below. That was two racers out already, and this was before boost laps even!
Back near the front of the field, Saber was running out of track - by design, he needed to make a jump to another segment of the course below. It wasn't a long jump, but he had to be ready for it. Josh sent a strong pulse down the electric-type's reins. When it reached his head, Saber leaped skyward - high enough to see that Raye and her Glaceon had built quite the lead.
OsGj72jPp_ {55 + 15 = 70}
Saber touched down in the middle of the track, nailing the landing! He even used his momentum to coast a bit faster than his legs normally could carry him. All that remained of the course were some gentle turns, though they came at the narrowest part of the entire course - there was not even enough room to go three wide. The Meganium he was chasing down had made a bit of a rough landing, struggling to get back up to speed. Josh showed the grass-type no quarter, Saber's swift gallop carrying him to the runner-up position. He had a lot of work to do to catch that Glaceon, who made it to the starting grid and crossed the line well over a second before Josh did. The moment he crossed the line, his name on the scoreboard turned from orange to green, an indicator that boosting attacks were okay to use now. "Saber, use your Quick Attack to catch that Glaceon!" Josh shouted, though he probably couldn't be heard over the apparent gale-like winds.

As much as Elliot tried to focus on Josh, the big Pokemon pile-up got him and Echo cringing quite a bit. Were the Pokemon on the other end of it okay? The Sawsbuck who caused the whole pile-up sure wasn't. While most of the Pokemon had just bumped into each other, the poor thing through its leg out of whack! "I hope she's going to be okay," Elliot whispered. The racer seemed more disappointed than worried, so it maybe it wouldn't be anything too severe. Yet at the same time, Elliot couldn't help but worry as he watched her hop off of the track. One wrong turn could really spell disaster in a race like this.
Yet Josh had gotten out of the whole mess in a pretty alright fashion. He had passed the Meganium at least, changing his shaky #3 to a solid #2. Unfortunately, the Glaceon was doing just as consistently good as he was, and it had built up a fairly commanding lead heading across the starting line. It was going to take every trick in Josh's arsenal to end up pulling this one off.
Good thing the tricks were allowed to come out of the box now. Josh's name turned green, and from what Elliot remembered of the opening brief this meant attacks were now on the table. They were only allowed for speed purposes (which, with what happened to the Sawsbuck, was fine by Elliot!), but they'd still change this race up by quite a bit.
He could only hope it'd mean good things for Josh.
The second lap, and the unlocking of speed attacks, made the race suddenly a lot more intense. Pokémon were racing around the track faster than legal driving speeds on the freeway. A cacophonous mix of Pokémon cries filled the area around the checkered line, their trainers pushing for Quick Attacks and the like as soon as possible. "Come on, Saber! I know you can catch them!" Josh shouted, squeezing Saber's flanks more tightly than normal.
Farther back in the pack, trails of motion blur formed behind a Houndoom and racer as the two entered a blindingly fast Double Team. Unlike the typical use of Double Team in combat, where the Pokémon's trailing images are used to hide its true position, the trailing images on a race course formed right behind the Pokémon. It looked like there were four Houndoom superimposed atop one another. Though the added speed took a big toll on the Pokémon's ability to turn as well as its stamina, the trainer felt the exertion was justified, bringing the two rapidly up the ranks. By the time the course narrowed to the drop-off point, the dark-type was closing in on Josh fast.
6TGhWpbJp_ {7 + 15 = 22}
Taking a quick glance back as he entered the rising tunnel leading to the track's dangerous downward-sloping, narrow curves, Josh saw a Houndoom, Gogoat, Thievul, and Zebstrika coming behind him, all moving well beyond the speed of Saber's Quick Attack. Though the track was narrow, it was not so narrow that he could cut both of them off simply by riding up the middle of the track. One of the fire-type's horns grazed Saber, upsetting his balance enough that he started slipping down the outside of the downhill curve, all four Pokémon passing him. While this was a setback, it was not the end of the world - the Manectric had some of the tightest turning in the field, and was probably the only Pokémon there that could hold the brutal, uphill curve on the backstretch the entire way.
Meanwhile, up front, Raye and her Glaceon continued to extend their lead, her icy paws seemingly gliding on the track's surface and letting her build a lot of momentum going down the hill. She was well over a second and a half ahead of the big battle for second place. All the rider had to do was pace her Glaceon properly, and it would be a hard ask for anyone to catch her. It may not have seemed like much, but on a course like this, a second and a half was a huge lead. Any more would be borderline insurmountable.
Post by Elliot Sunderland on May 27, 2020 23:24:51 GMT
Was that kind of contact legal? The Houndoom totally poked Josh and Saber to throw them off balance! That had to be a foul or something! Seeing Josh go from a clean second place to a distant fifth stung, but at least he had recovered without too much incident. Heck, despite the setback, he still managed to hold onto the massive curve that so many other Pokemon had struggled with. So long as there wasn't any more interference, it was likely that he could've recovered from this.
Yet at the same time, the racer in first was going pretty much flawlessly, and the speed difference between Josh and the four Pokemon that blitzed past him meant that this was going to be an upward hill for sure. Superior handling meant that, when racing perfectly, one could make up for a lack of direct speed. But how was perfect supposed to compete with an even better perfect? Elliot gripped the arms of his seat tightly, watching to see how Josh would be able to snatch victory form the jaws of defeat.
No penalty was called - the contact was deemed incidental by officials. Josh wanted to see a yellow flag, but didn't get one. Whatever - Saber was one of the easiest Pokémon to recover from mishaps like this, and it was inevitably going to happen on such a narrow course. The electric canine's superior mobility let Josh catch up to the Pokémon that passed him, a big battle for position underway as the course widened into the long, uphill turn.
Behind him, Josh heard the cry of a Pyroar that had been going far too fast out of the tunnel. Its trainer panicking as the two sailed through the air, miraculously landing back on the track and catching an incredible amount of speed on the way down, whizzing by most of the Pokémon in the back and threatening to take 6th place away from Josh. One of the commentators on the broadcast likewise remarked it was a miracle the fire-type landed back on the track, banged up as the team was from smacking a couple of walls. Though it was clearly an accident, it worked out for them.
NVyTdgp8p_
Right as the track widened, Josh dug both his heels into Saber and leaned forward, the swift electric Pokémon blasting into the long curve full speed ahead. The sharp turn was decidedly uncomfortable the first time around. With how much more he needed to shift his weight for the agile Pokémon to maintain the inside of the curve with his added speed, it was downright painful the second time, and it showed on Josh's face as he rushed by. By the time he and Saber were out of the turn, though, they were back in second place, Raye and her Glaceon in sight. The difference appeared to be about a second. Josh didn't dare continue pushing Saber even on the long straight stretch - with his left leg throbbing from the immense pressure put on it, and having to do that again, he wasn't sure how much more he could physically take. And he went into this race worrying about how much Saber could take. Josh had a lot to learn about what Pokémon races were truly about...
Post by Elliot Sunderland on Jun 7, 2020 4:09:16 GMT
The contact was deemed accidental? Oh come on! That was totally unfair! Echo huffed at the call, Elliot giving her some reassuring pats in response. At least their attention was very quickly diverted by the appearance of a Pyroar from out of nowhere, recovering from a botched jump and somehow turning it into an accidental shortcut. How'd they even pull it off? Elliot had no idea, but the fact of the matter was that it left Josh in a pretty dangerous place. He could only hope that he'd recover.
And recover he did! But . . . at what cost? The look on Josh's face was downright pained, and Elliot found himself shivering at thought of how much that turn must've put on him. Heck, how much did it end up putting on Saber? It might've brought Josh four places in the matter of seconds, but there had to be a reason why the rest of the crowd didn't pull such a dangerous stunt. He could only hope that the duo would be okay after this.
The Glaceon was still in front of him, too. It was as if the Eeveelution and its rider were basically ahead of Josh no matter how hard he tried. Would Josh need to pull another dangerous maneuver like that to get past? Or would he be able to tackle this one a little bit more sensibly?
The rest of the field hadn't pulled such a trick because their Pokémon simply weren't capable of it - the electric wolf simply had the best grip out of all the Pokémon on the track. That curve was one of the primary reasons Josh had picked the Electric-type for this course to begin with. Right before a small jump there was enough room for Saber to execute a single Quick Attack, though with Josh's leg the way it was, he declined, costing him a position to the Pyroar that had surged ahead of him. The racer was able to relax as the track narrowed up again, breathing a sigh of relief.
L21QtK4qp_
The rest of the field didn't let Josh breath easy, though - all of the Pokémon that he had passed up during the long, uphill turn passed him right back as the two drifted toward the outside. He wound up back in 6th place as the track widened once more. If he wanted a place on that podium, he was going to need to rely more on technique than raw speed, especially with the condition his leg was in. Saber had even slowed down just slightly, trusting the inability of Josh to maintain full leg pressure as a command to ease up. With a quick bark of "What are you doing?!" from the trainer, the Electric-type picked right back up, using the straight, wide stretch to build speed again.
A confident Raye and Crystal crossed the line well ahead of Saber, the white flag dropping for them. If he wanted a chance at the gold trophy, or even a podium spot at all, he would need to make a reckless move at the big curve again on the last lap, possibly risking his Manectric from finishing at all due to being pushed over the brink. There was also his own condition to consider - if he misjudged the curve again and scraped his left leg a second time, the consequences could easily reach beyond a single race. He would have a little time to dwell on that, as the curve wasn't coming up for another forty seconds. If he were to scrape his left leg again,
Post by Elliot Sunderland on Jun 17, 2020 22:09:56 GMT
Speaking of bad contact, the fact that Saber slowed down almost immediately got Elliot quirking an eyebrow in confusion. The fact that Josh snapped at the Manectric in response got him and Echo exchanging concerned looks. Sure, Josh had just fallen back a bunch of places, but . . . could the poor Manectric even keep up right now? That turn had taken a toll on both Pokemon and rider alike, and if the Manectric needed a chance to slow down a push like that could get it re-aggravating an injury.
He held his walking stick with white-knuckled concern as he watched the rest of the race play out. Josh was dangerously close to the bottom half of the pack, and fatigue and possible energy risked taking their toll. Would he be able to finish this? And if he was, would it be worth it in the end?
As much as he wanted to check out the impressive feats being done on the field, right now his focus was entirely on Josh and Saber. He could only hope they'd be okay . . .
...Scraping his left leg wasn't going to happen. It just couldn't happen. He did need to be conscious of Saber - with the Manectric's breathing getting heavier, he couldn't afford to spend the rest of his stamina all in one burst...unless it was right at the finish line. Instead of a Quick Attack chain all the way up the slope, he just had Saber use a single one, maintaining an unboosted, but still swift, run uphill. The short speed burst did let him pick up another place, jumping to 5th before the course narrowed to three-wide again. With Saber's tremendous agility and grip, he could easily fend off the Pyroar behind him. The two were in a battle for 5th place the whole way up the gentle but narrow slope.
Sjy7NcoTp_
As the Pyroar behind him surged forward with a Flame Charge, Josh instinctively ordered another Quick Attack to keep pace, Saber's profile picture on the scoreboard starting to blink red. The Manectric's breathing became audibly heavier, though he seemed able to maintain his fast clip for the time being. While he kept an eye behind him to keep fending off the Pyroar, he had let big drop sneak up on him. Blasting forward at nearly 80 miles an hour thanks to his Quick Attack, Saber was going way too fast to keep his grip down the hill! Josh panicked for a split second before yanking hard on his Pokémon's right side, the swift electric-type turning right instead of following the track. Even a small miscalculation and he would be out of the race!
