Indeed, Lynn was the battler here, whether through words or Pokemon. She was also inwardly delighted that Elliot was capable of handling her humorous yet abrasive remarks, but outwardly? She simply nodded confidently and replied "of course I am!"
Afterwards, it was a good thing that she earned such a reaction from her 'trick of the light' tease, because it was totally worth it. Leaving boys blushing - it stroked her ego to see that she still had the charm, no matter where she went. Judging by Elliot's character, it'd go nowhere unless she straight up decided to ask him out, but that didn't matter to Lynn because now she had something to hold over the poor kid.
So, after Elliot's terrible joke, which earned a derisive snort from her, she checked her own phone and added the texted number to her contacts. Her first friend in Arciel, she realised. And rival too, and hell, she was going to catch up to him if it meant going to the end of the world and fighting Arceus itself.
Which meant when she saw the two new trainers mysteriously emerge from the waters, the glint in her eyes was almost evil. Though coming from a young girl such as Lynn, probably came off as more cute than threatening.
"Yesss," she hissed to herself as if a delivery man had just dropped off a pizza. And here Elliot was, getting them all softened up with his friendly demeanour and conversational-ness.
Less talking, more fighting, she chastised Elliot inwardly. We found other trainers! It's a chance to train!
Then Elliot said something and she raised her eyebrows curiously 'Y'know, my friend here just made her first catch too,' he'd said.
But she didn't take the opportunity to brag, and neither did she sputter or blush in embarrassment. She was not as innocent as that. Instead, she shot Elliot an appraising glance, one that was obviously meant for the two brothers to see. "I sure did," she said afterwards and winked at the two bros. "And it wasn't bad at all."
Yet she didn't even glance at Marill, who was now happily puffing out his chest in a 'who can look bigger' contest with Wolfram. Lynn then shared a cheeky grin with Ron, who appeared to have understood the joke, whereas it'd flown right over his brother's head.
"Ooh, team headache?" Lynn said, nudging Elliot in the shoulder with her own once she saw the two new Pokemon. "Hope they don't become that for you. But I'm sure they won't. You're probably all brushed up on the fundamentals, after all," she added with a smile.
Anton then unleashed his very angry Binacle and Lynn shuddered. There was something cursed about it.
Whether or not it was due to how angrily it looked at Elliot, she wasn't sure. "I think that Pokemon doesn't like you," she whispered to him matter-of-factly. Of friggin' course it didn't like him, it was trying to kill him with a death stare! It was then fitting that HYAH came to the rescue (or entered the nightmare, as Lynn would've thought), as it too was a Cursed Being in Lynn's eyes.
She then put her own game face on and looked to Ron, motioning at him to take his own goggles off. He did so, revealing similar aqua-coloured irises. "You versus me, then?" He asked, making sure that Lynn definitely did want a battle.
"Nice to see some guys are gentlemen," Lynn said with a smile. "You've already seen mine," she nodded to Marill and Wolfram, "so let me see yours?" She asked Ron in an ever so slightly teasing tone.
Ron, blushing a little, looked to his older brother for help with this obvious girl-related harassment. But alas, Anton seemed to wrapped up with the upcoming battle against Elliot. "Alright, alright, give me a chance. Go easy on her though, I just caught this one," he said, then released the newly caught Pokemon.
"An Azurill? Aww, it's so cute!" Lynn said in a predictably girly fashion. "Okay, I'll be fair and use my own just-caught Pokemon. Else it'd be too easy just to sweep you with my Rookidee," she said with a cocky smile, though she was really just trying to get under Ron's skin. Which worked, as he immediately seemed quite taken-aback by the girl's boldness.
Marill, immediately upon hearing that he'd get to fight, abandoned poor Wolfram right in the middle of the contest. He raced to the shore to see an Azurill floating on top of the water confidently, using her own tail like a little boat. However, she then did something rather un-Azurill-like, and somehow, without using arms, flexed at Marill.
"RILLLLLLLL!!!" Marill cried out angrily at the challenge, and Lynn balked.
"Oh sweet Arceus, I think I caught a Wolfie 2," she said and face-palmed. Wolfram however, just puffed out his chest proudly.
Marill, still stood on the shore, took a deep breath and blew himself up into a ball like Wolfram, then flexed his stubby arms so hard that his muscle was visible through the short blue fur.
"Umm," Ron said. "Any idea what they're doing?" He asked.
Lynn shrugged. "Some kind of mating ritual?"
"But Azurill is a baby Pokemon?"
"Then I have no clue. Let's fight!"

Wait, what?
Elliot blushed as Lynn took his comment in a third, completely unexpected direction. "Huh? I-" he said, before being cut off by nothing at all. He shot Lynn a look in return, but by this time she was already easing herself into a battle with the younger of the two brothers. Her tone had that teasing quality to it again, and at that moment Elliot realized that he may have gotten himself caught up in a web.
"Hey, no worries, man," Anson said, his tone still so even and relaxed that Elliot was starting to wonder if he had even heard Lynn. "I'll try not to beat you too badly in front of your girl." Nope! No, he definitely did! What he lacked in obvious teasing, he made up for with a matter-of-fact tone that just made Elliot's blush worse. Before he could even stammer out a rebuttal, Anson had taken the initiative. "Polish up, Goose!" he called, the Binacle furiously rubbing its heads along its own shell. The sheer intensity of the polishing left smoke rising from the Binacle, yet by the time it was finished its entire body was practically glowing.
Yet Elliot wasn't about to just let the Binacle power up uncontested. He already saw the speed and power that a Shell Smash could afford, and that was at the cost of any and all defense. What could he do if this Binacle was just as fast, but without any of the defense loss? "Hurry, Hydro Pump before it can finish!" Elliot called, HYAH!'s gem glowing a bright blue as she overwhelmed the Binacle's current location in a torrent of water.
It was barely too late. The Binacle sprang up into the air, a brassy glow surrounding its body as it cleared the Hydro Pump in a single bound. "Ancient Power, while he's still firing!" Anson called, the brassy glow launching from the Binacle and pulsing towards HYAH! This one was a direct hit, albeit not a very effective one. Digging a few points in the ground, HYAH! managed to hold their ground. However, when the Binacle landed, they seemed different. The stone around its body looked firmer and greyer, its spikes had elongated, and a new wisdom shone through its beady eyes. "Paleolithic! Seems Goose here's tapping back to the strength of an older time," Anson said, putting his hands behind his head and stretching back. "This is gonna be an easy one."
With Anson's Binacle now powered up two times over, Elliot knew this wasn't going to be an easy fight. Especially not when HYAH!'s strongest offense option was so much less accurate. His hand clenched around his walking stick. "Steady as it goes. Watch for where the Binacle's going, not where it is," he advised, HYAH! nodding. This was a lot easier said than done when the Binacle was already moving again, running on its heads at speeds that looked headache-inducing. By the time HYAH! could even prepare another Hydro Pump, the Binacle slid past, slicing HYAH! across the gem. The attack sent HYAH! sliding back in pain, its gem flickering slightly, and by the time they turned around the Binacle was already approaching for another pass.
"Wait for it."
Both Anson and HYAH! shot Elliot surprised glances, but the boy remained steady. Not even the sound of the Binacle's furious footsteps would break his calm. "Wait for it . . . wait for it . . ." he repeated, even as the Binacle continued to bear down on HYAH! It was when the Binacle was right by HYAH! that Elliot finally let himself react. "Now!" he called, eyes flashing energetically.
Anson grinned. "Point blank Hydro Pump! That's some moxie, but you're not getting away with it that easy," Anson said. "Jump it, and hit it from behind!" The Binacle obliged, leaping gracefully over HYAH! before reaching to rake them from behind.
"Never said Hydro Pump! HYAH!, hit it with a Rapid Spin!" Elliot clarified. Anson's eyes widened with surprise as HYAH! leaped backwards, rotating their prongs like a buzzsaw. The Binacle was battered back-and-forth by the attack, sending it flying back. "You can dodge in the air, but it can't. Follow up with another one!" Elliot cheered, HYAH! zooming through the sky to slice past it for another Rapid Spin. "Keep it up, back and forth! Don't give it a chance to land!" It seemed Elliot's peacefulness wasn't to be mistaken for mercy! HYAH! kept zooming back and forth from all directions, hitting the Binacle with spinning tackle after spinning tackle. The rotational force of each tackle had two effects; speeding HYAH! up to keep the onslaught going longer, while also knocking the Binacle through the air so it couldn't regain its bearings and dodge. Yet Elliot couldn't help but notice that none of these hits were doing much damage.
He wasn't the only one who noticed. "Alright, think we've got this guy figured out," Anson said. "To your right, now!" While HYAH's multidirectional onslaught may have seemed unpredictable at first, the downside of Rapid Spin was that they were making rather consistent loops through the air. Anson and his Binacle had figured out the pattern, and another powerful slash sent HYAH! crashing down into the water. The Binacle nodded, dusting itself off and looking to Elliot in order to see who was next.
Yet Elliot didn't respond. Instead he ran to the side of the water, leaning as close to its surface as possible. "I think it's time to win the race," he said, voice raised so the Starmie could hear him. Anson and his Binacle exchanged confused looks, only for a star to come shooting out of the water. The Binacle leaped towards it, head thrust back for another slash, but Anson quickly thrust a hand out. "Wait! It's a trap, don't do it!" he called. The Binacle pulled its strike, Anson sighing in relief, but the Swift promptly popped and knocked it back on its rear. Nevertheless, it seemed Anson was more concerned about a whiffed strike than he was about the damage.
Fury Cutter, of course! That's why it was hurting HYAH! so much!
Nevertheless, a few more stars launched from the water, the Binacle running, hopping, and rolling as it tried to avoid each one. Yet Swift never missed, the stars twisting in all directions to try and corner the Binacle. They surrounded it from all sides, converging inwards to seal the seal, yet Binacle leaped over them in one last-ditch attempt to dodge. That was HYAH!'s cue. "Hydro Pump, while it can't dodge!" Elliot said, the Starmie bursting from the water to snipe it out of the skies. This one was a direct hit, and no amount of defensive padding could strop the Binacle's from taking a nasty hit. It rocketed into the sky, then pulled its heads into its body to cushion the impact from landing. The heads didn't pop back out afterwards. Was it over?
Not quite. Anson still looked quite confident, and HYAH! didn't look finished either. The Starmie circled toward the Binacle, gem glowing blue and drops of water sputtering from its facets, but Elliot held a hand up to stop the Starmie's attack. "As soon as you fire, it's going to move. And it wants to land those Fury Cutters. Get too high for it to reach and start Recovering," Elliot suggested. The Starmie's gem glowed green as it sailed into the air, the dents in its purple surface starting to buffer out with each passing second. The two had called Anson's bluff, and now they could recharge for the second leg of the fight!
Or could they? As soon as HYAH! stopped to heal, the Binacle snapped into action. Using its sticky bottom foot and powerful head claws it began scaling a nearby tree with surprising agility, shimmying its way up the trunk before making its way over to the branches. Its head-claws balanced precariously on an overhanging branch, yet it didn't need to hang on for long. It just needed a vantage point to dive at HYAH! from. "HYAH!, hurry, away from the branch!" Elliot warned, but the Starmie was pretty much immobile during its regeneration. That gave the Binacle the opening it needed to springboard off of the branch, spiking HYAH! into the ground like a big, purple volleyball.
The Starmie's gem fainted a few times, and then it went dark. Elliot recalled it, giving the ball a gentle pat. "You nearly stole a victory twice in one day, even with how tired you are," he said, voice reverent with newfound respect for the Starmie. "You rest this one off. We'll win it for you."

Lynn couldn't help but grin as Anton rolled with her teasing. She'd started this and she was loving it, and oh was Elliot so flustered ~
Mission accomplished, she thought as she turned herself back to the fight and analysed the Azurill and Marill face-off. To her despair, she couldn't watch Elliot's battle and pick apart his strategy, yet from what she could tell on the sidelines was that he was no push-over nor no blithering rookie. Don't underestimate him in future, she noted to herself.
Despite the fact that she'd given the go ahead to Ron, the battle didn't begin.
"Well!?" Lynn accused him.
"Well I th-thought ladies first?" Ron replied awkwardly. He hadn't really been in as many Pokemon battles as his big bro, so he'd figured it'd be best to let the opposing trainer move first so he could counter her strategy and -
"Tackle!"
"MARRRRRR!!!" Marill was all too happy to obey such a basic command and unleashed himself upon the poor Azurill. Said Azurillyelped in surprise as her larger relative barrelled towards her. Without any prompting from Ron, however, she smashed her buoyant tail into the water and launched herself into the air and out of the way.
She'd put a lot of strength into the action, so much so that she flew about ten feet into the air and stayed there long enough for Lynn to think of a plan. "Get underneath her!" She told the Marill, who skidded onto the water and then turned around to do as he'd told. It was with a few seconds of hesitation, however, as he didn't really understand how this'd let him beat the Azurill.
The thing is, Lynn wasn't a totally green trainer, either. She'd had enough sneaky practice sessions with her parents' Pokemon to understand that what goes up, must come down.
"Tackle her!"
Marill thwacked his tail against the water and launched himself into the air too. This time, however, there was a target. Azurill cried out at the incoming Pokemon.
"Azu, Water Spot!" Ron tried countering the Marill's attack, but she faltered as she couldn't figure out what he wanted her to do. Water Sport at the water? At Marill? Into the air?
Marill then collided into the Azurill, sending her skidding along the water. She didn't seem too panicked however, as she stretched out her tail and pressed it into the water, slowing herself against it.
Lynn raised an eyebrow. That was a pretty good move, she thought, not being familiar with how water type Pokemon fought. To be honest, she was kind of winging it here with Marill. From now on, the Azurill was probably going to be a lot more cautious in how she opened up her defences.
"Water Sport!?" Lynn chastised Ron. "What the hell was that supposed to do? Make them wet? They're already in water, if you haven't noticed!"
Ron tried to ignore Lynn's heckling. "Azurill, use Sing!" He said and Azurill went to open her mouth.
Lynn then smiled. Oh, she loved this trick. "Shut her up with Water Gun!"
A blast of water later, and Azurill was sputtering. She then appeared to get extremely furious at her trainer and tackled Marill out of nowhere. Of course, when a Pokemon stops listening to its trainer and does its own thing, it starts to get a lot harder to counter an attack.
So indeed, Marill was sent careening backwards by the smaller water-type. Boy, could such a small Pokemon pack a punch, because Marill barely managed to use his own tail to brake against the water. It was good news to Lynn, however, to see that he didn't need to be told. It seemed to be a reaction intrinsic to the evolutionary line.
"Azurill!" Ron chided the Pokemon, but she appeared to pay his words no heed. Thus was the problem with newly caught Pokemon. If Lynn had been losing at this point, Marill would've likely done the same, but she wasn't and she didn't care.
"Now this is more like it~!" She said as Azurill went to tackle Marill again. "Evade her tackles! Get some distance from her!"
"Mar?" The Marill questioned.
Lynn nodded. Marill would just have to trust her. She'd prove to him that she was a competent trainer - and part of that also meant not telling your enemies what you're planning to do. When Marill finally managed to escape the raging blue ball of fury, he shot a curious glance at Lynn.
"Now do what you did to me and Wolfie earlier!"
Marill nodded and became encompassed in that familiar bright light. Then it disappeared.
While all this was happening, Ron was panicking at the Pokemon that refused to listen to him. "Water Gun! Water Gun!" He told her over and over again in hopes that she'd take his suggestion.
Azurill then used Water Gun, though whether it was because she'd listened was debatable. It blasted Marill point blank in the stomach and he was sent careening across the water again. "Close the distance! Keep her on her toes!" Marill braked against the water once again and then thwacked his tail down, sending him flying towards the Azurill.
It took him a couple of goes until he eventually managed to get close to the Azurill, and when he did, he was immediately beset by the little Pokemon trying to bitch-slap him with her tail. "Dodge the attacks! Stay on her!"
Azurill couldn't really let up her onslaught without giving Marill a chance to counter-attack, so she didn't.
Then it happened. Psychic energy washed into her mind and she instantly stopped. Marill wasn't a psychic type and Marill wasn't particularly brainy, but it hurt and shocked her. Where did this attack come from!? Who was interrupting the match!?
Marill took the opening to Tackle his head against her stomach and she flew onto dry land and skidded wetly against the grass.
"Follow her!"
Marill launched himself onto land after her and tried to close the distance. Would he be able to finish her off?
_yhqSBkSp_
No! Azurill simply had too much anger to unleash, and she righted herself and slammed herself into Marill. He cried out and flopped backwards. After both Wolfie's particular brand of punishment and now this Azurill's? It was too much, and the exhausted Pokemon conked out.
When he did, it appeared the Azurill calmed right back down. She waddled back to the water, kicked some dust into Marill's face, and floated peacefully on the water's surface.
"I... I won?" Ron said after a few moment's pause.
Lynn rolled her eyes. "Whether or not you won is debatable. Azurill, however," she pointed to the peaceful Pokemon. "Did win."
Ron shrunk back into the water shamefully. A sharp trainer like Lynn, despite matching his own Pokemon's strength, might've been a bit too much for him.
Recalling Marill, Lynn patted the PokeBall's surface. "You did damn well for a first time, Marill," she whispered and placed his PokeBall back into her bag. She then looked back to both her opponents.
"Azurill won't win against the next contender, though. WOLFIE!"
Upon hearing his name, Wolfram perked up from his spot on top of Lynn's bag. He then looked to the Azurill and somehow smiled darkly at her. Oh dear.
Like his namesake, he was staring at her like a wolf to a lamb.

The brothers had taken the lead against their opposite numbers, exchanging a quick high five. Yet when Elliot saw Lynn let Wolfie out to play, he couldn't help but flash a grin her way. "Good idea. Mind if I borrow it?" he asked, stooping down towards the battlefield. He and Echo looked towards each other, exchanging a meaningful nod as she hopped off of his shoulders and toddled forward.
Anson seemed quite puzzled by the swap. "Uh, you do remember she's a psychic type too, right?" he said. "Not to hash your buzz or anything like that. But, like. You sure you don't want to go with the Dugtrio over there or anything?"
"Nah. I trust Echo. She's got this under control," Elliot said. Echo simply tilted her head curiously towards the Binacle, only to shrink back as it scowled at her.
Anson simply shrugged. "Well, you do you, bud," he said. "Same deal as last time, Goose! End this one in a single hit!" Once more, the Binacle came charging towards Echo, who took a few steps backward in clear intimidation. It was the same plan that the Binacle had used to land its first hit on HYAH!; jumping over its foe's head, then cutting them down where they stood. Yet as the Binacle hopped in midair, it was surprised to find itself bringing its claws down on thin air.
Just before the Binacle struck, Elliot called "Go for a one-two punch, Echo!" The one, in this case, was a teleport. Echo had managed to wrap away from Goose's strike, appearing before the Binacle as its claws stuck into the ground. As for the two? "Perfect. Magical Leaf!" Elliot added, Echo swishing her dress as a flurry of glowing leaves kicked up behind her. Even if the Binacle could move, it had pretty much run out of steam. The miss took the "fury" out of its Fury Cutter, and if it started running again the Magical Leaves would track it until they landed. With the Binacle already having taken some solid hits, and Echo at full strength, Elliot's assessment was correct. This battle was already over.
Nevertheless, the Binacle popped out of the ground, shooting Elliot a defiant glare as the leaves barraged it from all sides. Anton returned the Pokemon, whistling a little at the display. "Little Miss there's packing some serious power," he said, grinning. "Makes me wonder who I should bring out to fight it next. These two hate being separated for too long."
Reverb, listening to this, began pawing at Elliot's shoulder and squeaking. He pointed at the two Kantonian water types, the one Echo, and then grandiosely gestured at himself. Seeing this, Elliot looked back at Anton with a mischievous twinkle in his eye. "Why not a double battle, then?" Elliot asked. "Echo and Reverb make a pretty mean team too. And that way, neither of your Pokemon need to be separated!"
Anton broke out into an equally wide grin. "I like the way you think, little dude!" he said. He pointed forward, the Slowpoke and Psyduck waddling out from the ocean at his command. "Duck, Duck, come on out there! Show this guy what you can do, eh?" As they headed out onto the battlefield, Reverb made a dramatic show of hopping off of Elliot's shoulder and arriving on the battlefield. He even used a small, subtle Psyshock from his hand to send dust scattering as he landed. Despite this, Echo protectively stood in front of him, holding out an arm to keep him back in case the enemy Pokemon proved dangerous.
With the sides set, Elliot knew exactly how he'd start things off. "Magical Leaf again, E-"
"Nah." Elliot stopped. What was "nah?" even supposed to mean. Yet before he could ask Anson what he had in mind, Psyduck clutched his head tightly. The duck's entire body flashed, then Echo's flashed. As she went to kick up another whirlwind of leaves, all she could accomplish was swirling her dress in an adorable fashion. "Didn't think I'd let you get away with that one twice, yeah? You don't get to be a type specialist like me without having a few ways of tipping the scales."
As Echo struggled with one Duck, Reverb ran up to challenge the other. "Don't let them double team echo while we whip up a battle plan," Elliot said. "Keep Slowpoke busy, however you can!" The Gothita nodded, lunging towards the Slowpoke with a comically over the top punch. Not even a Slowpoke would fall for an attack that telegraphed! He started to slowly lean out of the way, only for Reverb to grin mischievously. He dropped the feint of his obvious punch, then spun around to kick the Slowpoke in the exposed flank. The dirty trick hit the psychic type hard; maybe a little too hard, because the Slowpoke's body began glowing just like the Psyduck's hand. Feint Attack was about to join Magical Leaf on the banned list, and with that Elliot was out of any super effective moves.
Worse still, even a Super Effective hit wasn't much of a mess for a Slowpoke's pain tolerance. "You've got him right where you want him, Duck," Anson said. "Now grab him and headbutt him away!" The Slowpoke nodded, hooking a tail around Reverb before he could regain his bearings. The psychic type struggled in his grip, but before he could escape ended up taking a hard headbutt into the ground. "Goose may've been a speedster, but Duck and Duck can take a licking and keep on kicking! And, well, we did just kinda take away all your lickings."
"That's fine by me," Elliot said, grinning. "A hard hit's nothing compared to a well-place trick. Just like the one Reverb's about to pull on your Slowpoke. Look her right in the eyes and don't let up!" Echo called. Reverb stared the Slowpoke dead in the eyes as she reared back for another headbutt. His pupils swayed back and forth, like the end of a pendulum, and what was once a grab and a headbutt turned into an impromptu bout of sleepy cuddling. This was a lot easier for Reverb to struggle out of, and he quickly started making his way over to Echo.
Anson, undaunted, pulled out a conch shell from his belt. "Don't think that'll work for long! I've got my homemade Pokeflute right here," he explained. "One blow, and-"
"Guess it's my turn to say; nah," Elliot said, a teasing grin on his face. "Shut that down with an Embargo!" Anson quickly tried to fumble the shell in his mouth, but Reverb turned right towards Anson with a wide-eyed, ominous stare. A chill shot down Anson's spine as he tried to blow on the conch, and he sheepishly let his hand drop to his side.
As Elliot and Anson focused their attention on Reverb and the Slowpoke's struggle, Echo and her Psyduck opponent were engaging in a bit of a sniper battle. The Psyduck fired Water Pulses at Echo, and Echo returned fire with Psybeams. Without the guidance of their trainers, neither seemed very willing to engage with the other up close. Reverb took advantage of the stand-off to approach slowly and stealthily, looking towards Elliot and raising a finger. Psychic sparks glimmered at the end of it, a plan that got Elliot nodding with approval. Anson barely noticed in time, warning his Psyduck of the incoming attack with a "think fast!"
The good news was that the Psyduck thought fast, hitting the deck just in time for Reverb's Psyshock to go rolling off of her back. Yet as he hit the deck, Elliot saw his chance. "Warp on up there before he can regroup!" Elliot called, Echo nodding and teleporting right behind the Psyduck. He rose to his feet, looking around, only to be blasted towards Reverb by a flaming punch to the back. It wasn't a big hit, but it was enough to send him stumbling, his attention split between the two Pokemon. Who was going to fire first? The Ralts? The Gothita? Anson, too, found his gaze wandering between the two of them.
Elliot simply grinned. "Now attack from both sides!" he called, Echo and Reverb holding their fingers high into the air. Rainbow energy swirled around Echo's. Purple sparks flashed around Reverb's. In perfect sync they fired at the Psyduck, their psychic attacks colliding right in the middle. The sheer amount of telekinetic force in one place left sand from the edge of the lake exploding in every direction, obscuring the Psyduck's current location as well. Both Elliot and Anson squinted, leaning forward to try and see if Psyduck was still standing in the smoke.

Lynn shared an impassioned glance with Elliot as he too was one Pokemon down. As great as it would be for him to lose so she could tease him on it, she also didn't want either of these trainers to have any dirt on 'their' team.
"A double battle?" Lynn said, raising an eyebrow. "Alright then, let's do it!"
Ron gave her a sceptical appraisal. "But you only have one Pokemon left, right?"
"So?"
"But that's kinda... illegal? I think."
"You accusing me of being naughty?" Lynn raised a haughty eyebrow but creased a smile anyway. She should probably be saving this kind of treatment for Elliot, but to her this was only a warm-up session.
"N-no!" Ron stuttered. "Azurill!" He commanded his Pokemon to get ready as Wolfram flew onto the scene. "Sing!"
Once again, the little Azurill opened her mouth widely. It seemed that now she'd calm down, she was considering Ron's orders again.
"Leer!"
Wolfram barely had to be told. He hated moves like this. Putting an enemy to sleep? How was that meant to result in an awesome and noble fight to the end? How was he supposed to enjoy every wound inflicted on his foes if he was snoozing? So he swung around from overhead and let the Azurill get a taste of Wolfie Death Stare 6.2.
Yes, he'd been working on multiple versions of it. This was his best so far.
If it hadn't been for Lynn's command, Azurill would've thought that Wolfram had figured out how to turn Perish Song into a silent stare. But no, it was really just that dirty. In her surprise, she'd faltered and failed to start the move.
And Wolfram knew exactly what he wanted to do next. He tucked his wings and his beak glowed with energy, and he dived at the Azurill. She'd barely recovered from Marill's own thrashing, and when Wolfie pulled up again into the air, she was dead on the water. Not literally, of course.
Wolfram landed back onto dry land smugly and stared at Ron, as if he were saying 'who's next?'
Ron shrugged. "Well, Azurill was tired after the other battle. You haven't seen Metro yet!" He spoke confidently and recalled Azurill, then swam up closer to the shore. He didn't leave it though, as it would've been cold to stand around on land, and clearly 'Metro' wasn't a water Pokemon.
Because Metro was a Blissey.
Metro must have also thought that Wolfram was round enough to be an egg, as she instantly began racing towards him to presumably put him in her pouch. As expected, Wolfram didn't like this one bit, so he screeched at the motherly Pokemon and took to the skies again.
This 'battle-cry' appeared to be the fight's starting sound, because Ron then said -
"Metronome!"
Oh no. It looked like Ron was a dreaded Metronome user. Lynn hated these types of trainers. They won or lost based on complete, unpredictable randomness. Metro's arm then glowed, reshaped itself into a giant crab-claw, and to Lynn's surprise, the giant top-heavy Pokemon leapt up into the air to strike Wolfram down.
"Dodge it!"
Wolfram did, indeed, dodge it. Though it was incredible, it wasn't as fast as a tiny bird Pokemon that had years of flying experience under his belt. "Power Trip!" Wolfram then flitted back around and instead of allowing the Blissey to land gracefully onto the ground, flipped her over so that she was falling head first.
"No! Metro!"
"Peck while she's down!" Lynn commanded and Wolfram obeyed. As if he wouldn't.
And so, poor Metro was now being pecked by an angery birb. Without even being prompted by her trainer, she curled up into a Defence Curl. So, at Lynn's suggestion, Wolfram gave her a Death Stare 6.6. Yes, he'd just improved it.
Metro saw Wolfram's evil stare out of the corner of her vision, and her defence faltered just enough for Wolfram to deliver another nasty Peck.
"Just use Metronome again!"
Metro then used Swagger. Wolfram had just relented in his attack when the Blissey put her hands to her hips and sashayed in front of him. Wolfram was enraged. And also confused. Which would've been helpful for Metro if they were in a forest where a poor confused flying-type had to contend with obstacles such as trees and rocks.
But Wolfram was out in the open, so instead he went straight for Metro and delivered a very aggressive Peck.
Then another. And another. It was relentless. Despite Ron's desperate cries, there really wasn't much that Metro could do at this point. No one truly knows how scary it really is to be relentlessly attacked by a bird until it actually happens to them.
And this was one of those times. Metro had simply given up trying to go on the offensive and just curled up, because whenever she did leave an opening, it was immediately taken advantage of.
Soon enough, she fainted and Ron instantly recalled her. He hung his head sadly. The fight had started off so well. Sort of.
"Oh, look at that~" Lynn said, trying to act as if she knew all along that Wolfram would win both battles. "My amazing Pokemon won against two of yours. Good battle. Though maybe try not to rely on pure spontaneous chance next time and actually have some confidence in a strategy? You would've won if Blissey pulled out some good moves, but Metronome is literally unpredictable, so she ended up benefiting Wolfie instead." She said, offering her 'sagely' advice. It was only polite, after all.
Trainers fought to improve their Pokemon and themselves, and Ron had been kinda... green, to say the least.
Lynn, on the other hand, realised that she'd have to get to know Marill better after this fight. She had no idea that he'd been on his last legs when she sent him after Azurill. That was her bad. She also really hoped that her first caught Pokemon in Arciel wouldn't hold it against her.
Still, there were other things still happening. Mainly, Elliot's battle. And then she realised in surprise that she'd wrapped up her own fight far quicker than Elliot had. Nevermind that he had more opponents to face against, because Lynn felt smug about it anyway. Ha, she thought. At least I got to beat him at something today.
The start of a beautiful rivalry, this was. And after a short exchange with Ron that included a 'thanks for the battle', Lynn seated herself back down onto the grass with Wolfram in her lap to study Elliot's fighting technique down to the individual atom. It paid to know future opponents, after all.
"Boy, do things not look too great for him right now," she muttered under her breath. His best attacks had been disabled. Still, she didn't think this meant the end. Elliot had HYAH pull a trick at the last moment and won the race, and she was sure that something similar could easily happen here.
Not to mention Echo and Reverb were making an excellent team together.
And that's the important thing.

Whereas Lynn was a rather savage battler, Anson and Elliot were a lot more mutually supportive of one another. "Those were some crazy fireworks, man!" Anson cheered. "Course, I don't know if they'll be enough to take my Duck out."
"I hope you're right!" Elliot said. "This match has been intense so far! I'd hate to make it a 2 on 1 so early. Besides, I haven't even seen what your Psyduck can do yet."
"With that divide and conquer strategy, sure doesn't seem like you'd hate that," Anson pointed out, Elliot smiling guiltily. "Didn't think someone with such a sweet face could fight so mean, yeah?" That got Elliot blushing, Anson laughing uproariously. "Hey, hey, don't let me get you distracted now! From your girl, or from the battle!"
Thankfully, what happened next sure as heck made sure everyone was focusing! An earsplitting screech shot out from the sands, revealing that the Psyduck was indeed still standing! He clutched his head in pain from the onslaught, his feathers had been ruffled into a fluffy mess, and he was fighting to keep his eyes open, but he wasn't out of the picture just yet. The loud sound got Echo and Reverb flinching back, their guards dropped, and even forced Elliot to cover up his ears. By the time they all recovered, the Psyduck had already turned back towards Echo and blasted a ripple of water at her. It slammed her right in the head, sending her stumbling back and further disrupting her focus. How was she supposed to get a psychic attack ready at this rate? "Shake it off and regroup, Echo! Head back to Reverb!" Elliot warned, trying to get Echo's attention, but she was too dazed to muster up the energy for a Teleport in time. The Psyduck charged at her with surprising speed, knocking her to the side with a powerful psychic headbutt. Purple waves exploded from the site of impact as she tumbled away like a rag doll.
Reverb immediately ran to his partner's attention, but the more he ran, the further he found himself going. This confused the Gothita until he looked down and saw a pink tail wrapped around his body. Had the Slowpoke regrouped itself? When? Anson was all too happy to explain the answer. "You try sleeping through something as loud as Duck's screech," he said, shrugging. "I'm lucky he stayed on his feet. I'd be toast, otherwise!"
"C'mon, Echo, get up," Elliot pleaded. The Ralts pushed herself back up to her feet, preparing to block against another one of the Psyduck's attacks, but much to her surprise that wasn't the case. Instead, the Psyduck had retreated, running back over towards where the Slowbro had Reverb grappled. As he approached the Slowpoke pushed Reverb forward, Psyduck running forward with his head lowered. Purple sparks began popping off of the Psyduck's head, surely the sign of another Zen Headbutt incoming. It'd be seconds before they made impact; Elliot did not have much time to make an order. "Feint Duck! Attack Duck!" Elliot called, Anson raising an eyebrow. Yet Elliot's order may have been too slow. The Psyduck rushed right at Reverb, the Zen Headbutt making direct contact.
That wasn't all Anson's team was doing, though. Psyduck kept running, barely hustling out of the way as a Psybeam from Echo crashed behind her, and now Slowpoke began lumbering towards her in turn. The same psychic sparks began cracking off of Slowpoke's head; was he also using a Zen Headbutt? "You're not the only one with team techniques! Time for a cross combo!" Anson called, and only now did Elliot realize the plan that the two of them were concocting. One Zen Headbutt was bad enough. Being sandwiched between two would take Reverb right out of the fight for sure. All he could do was watch, clutching his walking stick with a white-knuckled grip, as Reverb tried to punch the incoming Slowpoke away from her.
A psychic pulse exploded across the battlefield as the two made contact, sliding past one another and leaving Reverb crumpled on the floor. The Slowpoke flexed her tail, and the Psyduck tried to reach a finger to the sky. However, as she did so, her eyes rolled back and she fell to the floor. "What happened?" Anson asked, pulling out a Pokeball to recall his fallen duck. "Psychic? Future Sight? Stomachache"
"Nope! Exactly what I said," Elliot said, grinning. "A lot of time's passed since you used Disable, so I figured I'd give Feint Attack another shot. And Reverb feinted one Duck, then attacked another. He must've hit your Psyduck with an elbow or headbutt before going down." Echo teleported over to Reverb's side as Elliot explained, shaking him to try and wake him up. She even held her hands above her head, summon some shimmering Life Dew to rejuvenate her and Reverb with. However, while the water managed to patch up her injuries from the Zen Headbutt, they did nothing for Reverb; he must've been out cold.
Elliot couldn't help but let his grin widen a hair. "And, of course, if Feint Attack was back," he mused, voice sing-song. Echo started to swish her dress around, brightly-glowing leaves rising up around her. Anson was quick to point this out, his Slowpoke glowing to prepare another disable. However, before she could fire her technique off, Echo split into three copies. Then into five copies. Then nine copies. Completely surrounded by Echoes, and having no idea which was the real one, the Slowpoke had no choice but to fire his Disable off at one of them. The Ralts flickered, then disappeared into thin air. Wrong one. She tried using it again, but succeeded only at making another illusion disappear. Finally, she focused on a third Ralts, sure that this had to be the real Echo.
This notion was promptly dispelled as the real Echo tapped her on the back. The Slowpoke wheeled around, curiously, only for her jaw to drop; the real Echo had teleported into a space she'd already checked! That had to be cheating! Yet Echo was fine with the misdirection, as was her trainer, who cheered a happy "Fire away!" Echo pointed her hand into the air, obliging, as the Slowpoke curled up to defend himself. Any second now, the leaves would come rushing past!
Or, rather, instead they'd be flying straight up into the air. The Slowpoke peeked out from behind her tail, only to find Echo pointing a hand directly at her. "Never said what to fire. Psybeam, Echo!" Elliot said, the Ralts firing a point-blank beam of psychic energy right in the Slowpoke's face. It slid back, fighting to stay on its feet, only Echo's leaf barrage to rain from the sky and batter it down. By the time the energy surrounding the leaves dispersed, the Slowpoke was down for the count.
Anson recalled the fallen water type, then walked forward to give Elliot's hand a vigorous shake. "You've got a lot of tricks up your sleeves, don't ya?" he asked, amusement clearly shining in his eyes. "It's curtains for most once that cross combo hits."
"Oh, trust me. If Echo got disabled again, I'm pretty sure Duck would've outlasted her," Elliot said, laughing warmly. "It took everything I could think of to keep my head above the water this fight!"
"That a pun?" Anson asked, cocking an eyebrow before bursting into laughter. "Well, you keep that head of yours sharp, y'hear? Back in my home of Kanto, Psychic types had a hell of a reputation. Not just for how strong they are, but for all the tricks they could pull. If you're gonna fill your team with so many of them, you gotta stay thinking on the same wavelength with them, yeah?"
"I'll be sure to keep that in mind," Elliot said. Honestly, this gave him a lot to think about. Was he shaping up to be a psychic type trainer? Echo, Lord Beerus, Reverb, even HYAH! Though with Murex and Curly considered as well, he was also in the running to specialize in water types. Were these the two paths fate was setting before him?
Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe the only fates setting before Elliot were the fates he made for himself.

Lynn couldn't help but gradually lean forwards as the fight drove up in intensity. It was like Battle of the Psychics! Despite how things were going, it seemed that Elliot had at least one trick up his sleeves. While Anton liked to tag-team Elliot's own, Elliot kept up his evasion and defence until he could come up with a counter-attack.
And counter-attack Echo did. The Slowpoke had seemed completely overwhelmed by the young Pokemon's copying strategy and had no counter for the rain of Magical Leaves and Psybeam that followed. It was over.
That battle could have been Wolfie, Lynn realised. She cringed at the mistake she'd almost made. Wolfram didn't have the moves nor the pure power to overwhelm Ralts. She needed to get stronger... and maybe not go traipsing up to complete strangers going 'Battle me! Even if I have no idea how many Pokemon you have or how strong they are!'
Yes - just because a trainer was on a beginner's route didn't mean they were weak. An important lesson had been learned today.
Once Elliot and Anton had exchanged words (and Lynn had tried to commit as much information about Elliot's strategy and Pokemon to memory as possible), she leapt to her feet and approached the two. "That was like a super psychic smack-down! After seeing that, I've got to admit psychic types are damn cool." Lynn shot an approving glance towards Echo. Only a baby and she still wiped the floor with Slowpoke towards the end. "Strong and tricky with a well deserved reputation? They'd fit right in with my team," Lynn said with a grin.
"And from I've researched about Arciel, I think I know what type of Pokemon I'd like, if I can find it," she finished mysteriously. "It'd be blazing, trust me."
She then turned to Elliot. "Honestly, Echo was amazing," she said and pointed a finger towards him. "You wouldn't do bad as a psychic-type trainer if you wanted to. Then again, having a varied team can also make you a lot more dangerous." Lynn shrugged. She knew that she'd probably go for a varied team. It would make her more strategy more unpredictable, and why go for one ice-cream flavour when you can try them all?
By this time, Ron had caught back up with his brother. They exchanged a knowing look, and Anton looked towards Elliot."Hey, how about you hang on here for a second while I go and fetch a victory prize for ya? I'm sure you'll love it." Anton then took off, swimming across the water and to the other side to get to his bag.
He fumbled with the contents for a bit, until he took out what appeared to be a brown sphere. No, not a sphere - an egg. Lynn's brow raised. An egg as a victory prize? Anton then swam back towards the group with it under his arms. Ron was smiling and Lynn wondered if perhaps she shouldn't have been so mean to him earlier.
"Here you go," he said as he waded onto the shore and passed the egg to Elliot (and by extension, Lynn. Unfortunately, they were now both responsible for it). "Take care of it!"
A few goodbyes were said afterwards, and once again the two trainers were left standing alone with only their Pokemon for company. Plus an egg.
Lynn then turned to Elliot. Now that they were alone...
"So..." She started, looking him up and down as she scrutinised every inch of him. "'Your girl', am I?" She took a step towards the boy, ever so slightly invading his personal space again and tilted her head slightly to one side. "I hope you're ready to save me from all the dangerous Pokemon and strong trainers out there, Elliot, because..."
Oh boy, was Elliot in for it...
She then held the palms of her hands up to her face and sniffed. She looked like she was about to cry. "I-I don't know what I would've done if you hadn't been there for me when that savage Marill and those two trainers appeared! Th-they could've done anything to me!" Her tone sounded teasing, but Lynn was such a good actor that it was difficult to tell if she really was serious or not.
A sweet smile then crested her lips and she looked towards Elliot, no sign of tears on her face at all. "And I'm so glad that you're better than that," she said and pulled him into a quick hug, before letting go again. "Aren't you? You would never use such a powerful team of psychic type Pokemon to take advantage of a girl all alone in the wilderness, would you? I mean - they could do anything, they could hold me down or mess with my mind and make me believe anything! Couldn't they?"
All while Lynn spoke, she stood close to Elliot, playing the role of sweet innocent girl with a timid imagination. Then after that bout of teasing was through, she took a step back and finally gave Elliot some breathing room.
Eventually, Lynn looked at the egg Elliot and her had been given and shuddered.
"...why do I get a terrible sensation whenever I look at it?" Lynn asked eventually as she shivered. It was just getting colder since it was evening, wasn't it?
Likewise, Wolfram was perched on Lynn's head again, glaring at the egg with a mixture of fear and apprehension.

So Lynn already had a Pokemon of choice picked out for her team, huh? Now that was interesting. Between that and her turnabout victory from behind on the battlefield, Elliot was realizing that Lynn was no ordinary rookie. She had seriously done her homework before making her way on her journey, and that kind of spirit was going to take her a long way. "Somehow, I get the feeling you're not gonna tell me unless it pops up and you start going 'It's here! It's here!' " Elliot pointed out. It was hard not to notice her eyes burning a hole in the back of his skull while he battled, almost as if she was studying him the whole time. "But, hey, that's okay. I like surprises."
Most of the time, that was true. Yet the surprise that Lynn was about to drop on him was one he was not ready for.
First, a calm before the storm. Lynn turned to gush over Echo, the Ralts throwing up her hands to her face in surprise. She blushed brightly, wiggling back and forth while cooing from a mix of embarrassment and warm, fuzzy feelings inside. Elliot reached down to gently pet her, the Ralts happily snuggling into his hand all the while. "She really is, isn't she?" Elliot asked. "Hard to believe she hatched so recently for already being such a powerful Pokemon. And she's still such a total sweetheart, too! But I guess that just goes to show that all the practice we're putting in is really paying off.
As for specializing? I don't really know if I'm setting out to do anything like that myself. I mean, by happy accident I've got pretty much a whole team's worth of psychic types already, but its not like that was really my goal. Then again, at this point I think I've got too many Pokemon to even use just a core team of six. It's probably a lot healthier for them all to let them keep subbing out with one another, right? That way they can all get a chance to battle, all get a chance to rest, and it never feels like we're all going through the same motions over and over again.
'Sides, it means if anyone's looking to challenge me, they'll have to keep on their toes and prepare for anything."
Perhaps that was meant as a light tease in Lynn's direction. Yet Elliot learned the hard way not to use a slingshot on someone armed with a nuke. The girl looked Elliot up and down with an intensity that got him blushing, then stepped right into his personal space again. This time, it was surely no trick of the light, and the words Lynn chose to repeat made it all too clear what she was teasing him about. "I-I mean, he just thought th-"
Oh, no. Now she was sniffling. If there was any refusal in Elliot's words, he suddenly bit down on his tongue. Her tone still had that sultriness to it, but she kinda always had a sultriness to her voice. It didn't change the fact that seeing her burying her face in her hands and sniffling about how scared she was hit Elliot on a primal level. He hesitantly reached towards her, as if hoping to comfort her. "H-hey. I-it's okay, you're s-" he started, only for Lynn to pop back up with a big, sweet grin on her face.
There wasn't a tear in her eye. She had played Elliot like a damn fiddle. And yet before he could call her out on it Lynn pulled him in for a hug, a little too quick and a hair too tight. As she released him, she remained all too close to him, sweetly talking about how she was sweet, alone, and easily manipulated. Frankly, Elliot's mind was a little too innocent to consider the implications of what she was rattling off. Was she afraid of getting hurt? Afraid of psychic types? Just nervous in general? Yet her tone of voice, which was ever so slightly too sweet, and her proximity to him, which was ever so slightly definitely too close, still got him blushing.
Only when Lynn stepped away from him did Elliot realize she had been playing some sort of strange game with him. Her tone of voice went from put-up innocence to her usual sarcastic, fiery tone as she looked at a strangely eerie Binacle egg. And come to think of it, why would a psychic-type team even worry her? She was just excitedly planning the next psychic type she'd try to catch! "C-come on, that kinda stuff's not cool to joke about," Elliot said as she drifted away. "I mean, I wasn't sure if-" Wasn't sure if what? Frankly, a combo of being a little flustered and not in the loop had Elliot not even sure what that answer was. "I thought you were-" Were what? Scared? Strange? A little too invested. "I . . . I was worried."
Oh, Elliot. A big heart just gives so many more places to tease.
Lynn shot Elliot an amused glance as he stuttered. For a guy that'd seemed so confident and sure of himself at first, he was now practically tripping over himself. Was this all it took? A few sweet words from a sweet girl? Lynn took the urge to grin and smothered it. She wasn't quite done yet. Instead, her hand went to cover her lips in a girlish gesture and she giggled. "I knew you'd care about me," she replied in a tone that one would imagine a girl would have for her boyfriend after getting an unexpected Valentine's gift.
Of course, to Lynn, this was actually immensely hilarious. She was struggling not to break into a laughing fit. Poor Elliot had thought she was being serious!? "And you should! A girl on her own out here? Someone could easily - "
Just as Lynn was about to go for round two, she saw in the corner of her eye something odd.
A small, blue otter-like Pokemon had appeared right next to her and was imitating her every gesture. The sweet mannerisms, the bashful, searching looks sent towards Elliot. Though unlike Lynn, its eyes shone innocently as it did. It was absolutely adorable.
Unbeknownst to Lynn, Oshawott had actually been swimming along when she saw the two teenagers on the shore. Lynn had been facing away from her, and she'd then snuck up right next to Lynn and, fascinated by this strange exchange, started mimicking her mannerisms.
"Oh-Arceus-it's-an-Oshawott!" Lynn said suddenly, completely forgetting about teasing Elliot.
This time, both of her hands were brought up to her face in a genuine expression of surprise. This had been completely unexpected.
The Oshawott then likewise copied her gesture, doing an adorable otter-double of Lynn.
Wolfram, meanwhile, was giving a pained expression. As much as he loved a fight, he was still resting from the last three. He knew what would come next...
"Let's battle!" She exclaimed and moved into a likewise fitting pose, one that involved stretching her right arm straight out towards the Oshawott. To the Oshawott, this was so cool that she had to copy the dramatic gesture. Battle? Why not!
"Dee..." Wolfram squeaked tiredly as he flew in front of the Oshawott and landed so that the match could begin. He then shook himself ready, acted as if he weren't tired at all (bless him) and screeched a battle-cry. This little bird could still fight!
To both Lynn and Wolfram's surprise, the Oshawott moved first. She looked up to the sky, as if she were gazing at the clouds, and opened her mouth. Water poured out of it like a sprinkler, leaving the ground sodden with moisture. At the same time, Wolfram cried out in despair as his own feathers were drenched.
"Oh crap," said Lynn as she realised what the Oshawott was doing. Wolfram pumped his wings but the water weighed him down. He could still fly but...
"Wolfie, don't bother," Lynn told him then glanced at the Oshawott with a spark of approval. "Let's do this on the ground then!"
Wolfram nodded. Then another surprise hit Lynn, though this one was somewhat more pleasant. Wolfram's talons glowed in a sparkling light and Lynn noticed that they seemed sharper, sturdier and... shinier? Curious, she whipped out her Galar Pokedex. "Hone Claws! So that's what it is," she remarked with a grin and glanced towards Elliot. "Looks like the few battles we've had so far have been enough for him to learn it!"
With this move, his attacks would be stronger. So Wolfram turned to the Oshawott, who was wagging her tail in the most adorable manner...
And she tackled him square in the face! Wolfram barrelled backwards and skidded along the earth, and to his horror, tracked mud into his feathers. He was now looking less like a Rookidee and more like a spherical mud monster.
"Ree!" He screeched at the Oshawott, who glanced at Lynn, shrugged and then winked at him.
Lynn had to suppress a laugh. "I like this Oshawott," she commented as if that weren't already obvious. "I'm just hoping that Wolfie can forgive me after this, pffft. Wolfie! Roost!"
Wolfram, who was already on the ground anyway, stretched his wings and glowed slightly, despite the mud clinging to him. His feathers did, however, start to straighten out as the battle fatigue started to reverse itself. He was regaining health. The Oshawott watched curiously, then once Wolfram was finished, she blasted a stream of water at him. It washed away the mud and left him clean again, as if she were finishing off the new look, and Oshawott smiled at her handiwork.
He cried out again, despairing at being drenched twice.
"She's coming at you again! Evade!"
But that didn't stop him from hopping nimbly to one side as the Oshawott went to tackle him again. It wasn't a well-known fact, but Rookidees were just as nimble on the ground as they were on the air, and Wolfram hopped side-to-side, evading the Oshawott's strikes as she swung her scal-chop at him.
Lynn leaned forward and focused as hard as she could on the battle. She just needed to tell him when there was an opening...
"Now!" She shouted, and instead of hopping, Wolfram rolled onto the ground and stretched out his talon, tripping over the Oshawott again. She cried and fell backwards, and Wolfram's beak glowed. He looked almost menacing as he proceeded to cheerfully enact his revenge on the cheeky otter with a few well-placed Pecks.
Oshawott then slapped Wolfram in the face with her tail and sent him falling to one side, but he rolled and landed on his feet.
"Good work! Hone Claws and Peck!"
Wolfram leapt out of the way of another strike, but as he dodged the relentless flurry of attacks from the clearly experienced Oshawott, his talons glowed again. He didn't carry out the last part of the order yet, though. Wolfram was quite old, really, and he knew that Lynn didn't mean for him to use the move right away.
So he waited until he thought the Oshawott had stretched her arm out too far, giving him just the extra second needed to thrust his head forward and bonk her in the stomach with another Peck.
Oshawott yelped and fell backwards, clutching her stomach with her arms.
"Alright, now or never! Let's try and catch that cutie!"
She'd been fumbling with the PokeBall the entire time, hoping that she'd be able to catch this adorable otter Pokemon, having utterly forgotten about the mystery egg that'd been set aside for the time being onto the ground.
The netted blue ball was in her hand, and she reeled back, made note not to hit poor Wolfram with it, and threw it at the Oshawott. A familiar red light encompassed it and she waited, crossing her fingers as she did so.
Wolfram glared at the PokeBall, as if by some magic that'd be enough to ensure a catch.

Elliot rolled his eyes some as Lynn prepared to launch right into Round Two, yet her tendency to be easily distracted kicked in right in time. This time, rather than a vaguely disconcerting Binacle egg, it was a lot more exciting of a sight; an Oshawott, Unova's most underrated starter! And this one, much to Elliot's chagrin, was hell-bent on mimicking every move Lynn made. Echo giggled at the sight, while Elliot turned to The Dudes and smiled semi-awkwardly. "Oh, great, now there's two of them," he teased, before turning to watch the battle that was about to begin.
The first thing that Elliot learned about Lynn, now that he had a chance to properly study her battle strategy, was that she was surprisingly adaptable! When her flying type was left grounded, she transferred over to a more ground-based strategy that still played towards Wolfie's strengths. Rather than get into a protracted chase with a Pokemon more suited for the job, she focused on making quick, precise movements, striking at close-range weak spots rather than getting caught up in running. All it took was a little bit of overextension on Oshawott's part to mark the difference between a solid hit a counter, giving Lynn all the opening she needed to toss a Net Ball.
One, two, and three! Lynn had just secured herself quite the rare catch.
Even with how vexing the girl had been, Elliot had to hand it to her. She was kind of a natural at this. If they had started their journey at the same time, Elliot was fairly certain she could've wiped the floor with him. "You two really pushed each other to your limits, huh?" Elliot asked. "Though poor Wolfie's gotta been worn out by now. I'd say you should get him a glass of water, but I figure by now he's kinda sick of it. A potion could do him a world of good, though-"
Or, if not a potion, perhaps a berry? While Elliot had been busy watching the fight, Echo crept away towards the treeline to do some exploring. Now she returned in a flash of psychic energy, precariously balancing a pile of oran beries in her arms. She toddled towards Wolfie, both the Ralts and the pile unstably swaying as she tried to bring it over to the Rookidee. Unfortunately, with her vision being blocked by the pile, the poor thing didn't even see the rock in front of her feet. She tripped over it, letting out a high-pitched cry of surprise as the oran berries flew out of her grip. By the time she finished tumbling head over heels she had rolled up to Wolfie's feet, squeaking a cheerful hello to her feathered friend.
Speaking of feathers, his were so ruffled! She shook her head, popped up to her feet, then started orbiting the poor, hapless bird to begin grooming him. Maybe having his feathers smoothed out, cleaned, and fawned over would cheer his mood up after all of the drenchings that he had endured. Elliot couldn't help but smile warmly at the sight. "So. Rookidee, Marill, Oshawott. Your dream psychic type happen to be blue too, or is the streak going to get broken?" he asked, an easy-going smile on his face. His teasing may not have gone for the jugular as hard as Lynn's did, but that didn't mean he wouldn't try bantering with the best of them.
"Yes!" Lynn exclaimed. "My 2nd catch, and it's an Oshawott! This has to be the best first day of any journey, ever," she said smugly and went to retrieve the newly caught Oshawott. This one was definitely a keeper.
Wolfram, who was both glad for his trainer and exhausted, gave her a congratulatory squeak. Lynn seated herself next to him for the time being, still clutching Oshawott's PokeBall as she did and lightly petted her cherished Pokemon.
"Yep," she said, replying to Elliot. "Maybe sometime I should push you to your limit?" she said, shooting him a cheeky grin. Of course she meant battling, right? "But yeah, we used to train back home in the garden together. Sometimes the park too. We used to come up with all sorts of fun strategies together." Lynn smiled as the memories came flooding back. "But there's nothing like a real Pokemon battle. And now I have Oshawott and Marill we can train with!"
Lynn watched as Echo suddenly appeared from the bushes, carrying a bunch of Oran berries. How sweet!
"Um, Echo, you might want to watch out for that -"
But then the young Ralts went toppling forwards with the Oran berries following suit. Wolfram tensed up and looked like he was about to try and save Echo from the fall somehow, but it was too late. When Echo, who'd arrived precisely at his feet, looked up to and greeted him, all he could do was manage a confused chirp back. Was she OK?
It seemed that all was fine however, as she promptly leapt to her feet and began fawning over Wolfram and straightening out his poor, ruffled feathers. If Wolfram were a Purrloin, he would've been purring. Instead, he closed his eyes and adopted a blissful expression, infinitely happy at the unexpected attention.
"Aww, he loves that," Lynn commented at the heart-warming sight. "Looks like Echo's discovered the way to Wolfie's heart is through a good fuss," she laughed. "I'll have to give him a few extra treats tonight for all the good work, too," she said and Wolfram ever-so-slightly perked up at the comment.
Lynn's expression then became thoughtful at Elliot's banter. "Making my team blue? Now that's a thought. I think the Pokemon I want can be blue sometimes too," she said. "You'll have to wait and see, though. Besides, I think you'd be better off pulling the blue theme with your team," she finished and nodded towards Echo. "Wolfie won't be blue once he's fully evolved, anyway."
Once everyone had taken the appropriate breather and Echo had finished grooming Wolfram, Lynn got up and approached Elliot. Wolfram remained where he was, though, and instead took an Oran berry that'd been lying around into his beak and offered it Echo, before then taking one for himself to nibble on.
Lynn shot a smile towards Elliot. "You know... with me being 'Your Girl' and all, do you think you could walk to the next town with me? It is getting late, after all," she added, though her tone turned just slightly more sultry than usual towards the end. An amusing thought then came to her and her smile widened. "And hey... maybe we could finish today with dinner and a movie?" She said with a mischievous glint in her eyes.
Then she shook her head before Elliot could refute her suggestion. "Nah, I'll be way too busy introducing my new team to each other. I guess that'll have to be some other time," she teased with a slight grin.
While Lynn and Elliot chattered, a pair of beady, dark eyes watched from the trees. As the duo would start their walk to Cedar Town, it would follow them, hopping from branch to branch, observing this odd couple and their strange mating ritual.
Of course, that had to be what they were doing, hadn't it? Why else would a male and a female be out all alone like this?
This was all getting rather tedious though. Shouldn't there be something that the Pichu could do to speed things up? He looked between the flowers in the tree he was in. That'd work, wouldn't it? He was sure that he saw humans giving flowers to each other once. So he collected the flowers in paw, one by one, until he had a bouquet of pink petals.
Now, all he had to do was wait until the boy wasn't being watched by the girl, then he could give him the bouquet, and they could FINALLY DECLARE THEIR LOVE!
Pichu smiled smugly at his plan. He was a genius.
It didn't matter that this hadn't worked with the Oshawott he'd seen earlier, because it'd definitely work this time.
Wolfram: Rookidee, Lv8, Energy 2/5 Marill: Marill, Lv3, KO Oshawott: Oshawott, Lv11, Energy 2/5 Binacle Egg: 3/3

If there was a small mercy about Lynn's teases, its that sometimes they were too rapid fire for Elliot to even react to. Instead he simply returned her cheeky grin, listening to the girl talk about her training routines. "I had a feeling. You don't battle like that if you're completely green, and I had a feeling you weren't spending those years before your journey sitting down and twiddling your thumbs," Elliot pointed out. " 'Course, now that you have more than one Pokemon to train with, you'll find you and Wolfie getting better more quickly than you could have imagined. Lord Beerus taught me and my team that the hard way; theory's one thing, and practice is another.
Heck, I gotta admit. If it wasn't for his guidance, and the routines he's worked out for us, Wolfie and Echo could've had a lot more even of a fight."
Lord Beerus' training didn't quite cover everything, though! Elliot couldn't help but giggle as Elliot slipped and tumbled away. Echo, too, giggled, especially once Wolfie started chirping away. She hummed and babbled happily, fussing and smoothing his feathers over with surprising diligence for such a young Pokemon. "She may be a bit shy around newcomers, but once she warms up to someone she's really caring," Elliot explained. "Seems Wolfie's already made that list for her!" He couldn't help but smile a bit at Lynn's mention of spoiling the little Rookidee after this, too. As harsh as she could be, there really was a sweet side to Lynn, too. Their differences aside, she was a friend he was happy to have made!
. . . Though just that. Even if her teasing insistence otherwise got him blushing. Elliot was lucky that Lynn refuted the point before he could, because he would've fallen into the oldest trick in the book otherwise. "Well, I'd be happy to walk you to the next city, at least," Elliot said, keeping noticeably mum about how disappointed or relieved he was by the delay on a potential date. He may have worn his emotions on his sleeve, but an embarrassed blush could cover both possibilities. For once, he was in the clear!
Or was he? A few excited barks came from further down the route, Elliot turning to try and see what the source was. The answer was a rather large Seel, leaping and bounding down the path with surprising agility for an aquatic Pokemon. Being dragged behind him was a hapless looking child, no older than 6 or 7. He clutched an inner tube in one hand and the Seel's leash in the other, although it looked more like the Seel was walking the kid than vice versa! Elliot couldn't help but laugh warmly at the sight, calling out towards the poor kid. "Hey, are you okay over there?" he asked.
Luckily enough, the Seel stopped in its track, the kid skidding to a halt behind him. He looked up at Elliot, waving cheerfully. "Hi, mister!" he said. "Me and Bingo are great!" He looked at Elliot, then looked at the Ralts at his side and the Espeon laying down at his feet. As soon as he did, his eyes lit up with excitement. "Oh! Oh! Are you a Poke-guy too? I knew we'd find one! Isn't that great, Bingo?" If the kid was a 'Poke-guy', he must have been a pretty new one. Bingo didn't even really acknowledge his question, instead stopping to start scratching behind his ears.
"Yeah, I'm a trainer too!" Elliot said, making sure to stress the word so the kid could have a shot practicing it. Sure enough, Elliot could see him mouthing each syllable a few times. 'Trai-ner.' 'Trai-ner.' "My name's Elliot! What's yours?"
"I'm Qiu! Nice to meetcha!" the kid chirped. He promptly turned and pointed a finger at Elliot. "If you're a . . . a . . . a trainer! too, then we gotta battle!"
This time it was Elliot's turn to be a little taken aback. This kid didn't even know how to pronounce the word trainer! He probably still had trouble tying his shoes! And Bingo didn't exactly seem to be listening him very much. Elliot turned to Lord Beerus, looking at him haplessly, as the kid whined "You gottaaaaaa!" He even did an adorable half-flail from how insistent he was! With the weight off two gazes on his shoulders, Lord Beerus rolled his eyes and started to appraise the two. Sure enough, Qiu was exactly what Elliot had expected. The kid didn't have a bone of experience in his body, and didn't even seem to actually own a Poke Ball. Yet the Seel got Lord Beerus' eyes widening in surprise. It had some serious potential! If an actual serious trainer was using it, Lord Beerus could've actually had an interesting challenge on his hands. Instead? It wasn't worth waking up for.
Nevertheless, he shot ELliot a nod before returning to his slumber. Elliot had a feeling he got what it meant. "Alright, Qiu! You're on!" Elliot said, the kid clapping excitedly. "But Bingo there's a pretty tough guy! I'm really gonna need my best and brightest to take you on. Let's see, who'd be up for the task . . . " Elliot made a big show of rummaging through his Poke Balls, even though at least two of them held fainted Pokemon and his remaining teammates were already out in the open. There was really only one choice; Elliot's hand tightened around the ball containing his brand new catch, which he promptly held close to his chest. "Go easy on him, okay, Curly? We're not in it to win it, we're here to teach the guy a few things," he whispered, before turning to Qiu and grinning. "Now that we've talked our Super Secret Strategy, it's time to battle! Get ready to meet Curly!" he called, tossing the ball into the lake where this had all begun.
Lynn smiled. Looked like she'd be in Cedar Town in no time, and she had company to boot.
"Thanks," she said, for a rare moment sounding sincere. That moment was soon lost, however, as a little kid came bounding up to the pair.
Apparently his name was Qiu, and he wanted to battle Elliot too today. "Huh, for not being much of a battler, you sure are getting a lot of battles in today," said Lynn. "Guess I'm sitting this one out." She shrugged and went to lean against a tree. If Elliot was going to battle again, even if it was against a six-year-old (and she had a feeling this wouldn't be a serious battle), it was still another chance to see more of his Pokemon and how he used them.
She shot another glance at the disconcerting egg on the ground and shuddered. She wasn't sure why, but she hoped it wouldn't hatch too soon.
"Curly?" Lynn muttered. Was that because the Huntail had a curly tail or something? And best and brightest? Elliot had just caught the Pokemon today. Showing off for the kid, Lynn realised suddenly. Yep, this wouldn't be a serious battle.
A sound of flapping wings distracted her from the start of the battle, and Lynn turned her head curiously towards the sound. A flock of Pidove had taken off in the distance and were flying circles in the sky. Way too far away to be worth catching, but it was a pretty cool sight.
Pichu was frustrated. Who was this new tiny human? And why were they interrupting his plans this date? He growled, pacing the tree branch, flowery bouquet still in hand. Then he noticed that the girl wasn't looking at the boy anymore, and he decided to take his chances. He couldn't waste too much time here, after all: he had other couples to engage!
So Pichu dropped from the tree and landed a few paces before Elliot, before presenting the bouquet to him and chattering excitedly in the direction of a distracted Lynn. He gestured vividly, trying to make it clear that the bouquet was meant to go to Lynn.
With an uncharacteristic yawn, Lynn turned her head back to the fight.
"Holy crap! It's a Pichu!"
She swept forward into a jog and the Pichu yelped, dropping the flowers all over the ground. Thankfully for Elliot, Lynn was too excited to understand quite what the Pichu was doing.
"Don't worry, I'll stop it from interrupting you battle, Elliot! You can thank me later!" In Lynn speak, this basically translated to: Dibs on Pichu, sucks to be you.
In Lynn's eyes, catching a Pichu would be way more fun than battling some unexperienced kid. She then disappeared into the grass after Pichu, Wolfram winging wildly after her.
"Pichu! Don't run! I just want to battle you! Let me test you," she said, running out of breath and placing her hands on her knees. She might've been a decent strategist, but she was really out of shape. The Pichu stopped, turning around curiously at the funny sight. Then he appeared to get extremely exasperated, going into what sounded like a tirade while pointing back to the scene where he'd come from.
Lynn had no idea what Pichu was saying, but Wolfram started chirping wildly. He was... laughing?
"What's so funny?"
Whatever it was, Lynn didn't find out, because a bolt of lightning zapped where she'd been just a moment earlier. "Bloody hell!" She yelped and danced out of the way. Then something else unexpected happened, and Oshawott suddenly released herself from her new PokeBall, scowling madly at the Pichu.
Lynn hadn't even given her a command when she blasted a stream of water at the Pichu and sent him to crash into a tree. Pichu then leapt up and fired another Thunder Shock, which Oshawott managed to somehow predict and hopped out of the way.
"I guess this is happening now," Lynn facepalmed. "Oshawott, whatever you do, avoid that lightning!" Pichu seemed weak, but Lynn only had water types and flying types on her team for now. She couldn't risk KO-ing them against this electric type before she'd even gotten to Cedar Town.
And so Pichu continued firing blast after blast of electricity as Oshawott danced precariously around the spontaneous bolts all while attempting to hit Pichu with her own brand of elemental attacks. Then Oshawott was engulfed in light, sending her toppling to the ground.
Pichu then tried to fire another Thunder Shock, only to find his cheeks buzzing with electricity but no juice left in the tank.
Oshawott pulled herself up from the ground and fired her Water Gun at Pichu, which was enough to send him slamming into another tree. The otter Pokemon grinned smugly.
Had Pichu done something to anger this Oshawott before Lynn had caught it, she wondered? Either way, she pulled out a third PokeBall. She didn't want to get her hopes up, but oh boy, if she managed to catch three Pokemon since meeting Elliot, she might just have to make him tag along on her entire journey for all the good luck!

Like any good right hand man, Echo was fully prepared to take Elliot's messages for him while he was busy. She hopped down from Elliot's shoulder, prepared to chat the Pichu up and see what he was after, only for the mouse to be startled by Lynn's sudden excitement. He yelped and ran away, leaving a very confused Echo surrounded by flowers. She stooped down to look at them, shrugged, then tucked one into her hair. Perfect. The rest she wadded into a bouquet, holding close for later use.
Yet Elliot didn't have time to notice Echo's usual adorable antics. Right now, he needed to focus on this incredibly difficult battle with an expert trainer. "Bingo, use . . . use, uh . . . use . . . " Qiu started, tapping his foot as he tried to think of a move to use. "Hyper Beam!" Oh, no, this was going to be one of those battles, huh? Elliot grimaced a little, watching as a very confused Bingo turned to his "trainer."
"Hyper Beam? Oh, no, that's way too strong!" Elliot said. "The battle would be over in seconds if you used that! You don't want it to be over that quickly, do you?"
The kid thought for a second, then shook his head. "Yeah. That'd be sad," he said. "What about that beam you used last night? Rora beam? Bingo, use Rora Beam!" This one the Seel did understand, firing an Aurora Beam right into the water where Curly sat. He bobbed up and down, patiently watching the multicolored beam as it approached.
"Oh no! Curly, you gotta get out of there!" Elliot said. The Huntail went from patient to panicked, his eyes bulging as he swiveled his massive head around and around. His tail thrashed from side to side, and his great coils knotted in despair. Oh, where could he go to avoid such a powerful attack? Yet the Aruroa Beam hit true, sending Curly flopping into the water like a dead fish.
"That was great!" Elliot cheered. "But I bet you'll never see this one coming. Curly, Dive down so they can't find you!" Curly nodded, taking an exaggerated gulp of air before disappearing beneath the waves. Qiu ran to the edge of the water, looking around to try and find the Huntail, while his Seel bobbed in the water. "You two are going to have to use more than your eyes for this one. By the time you can see Curly coming up, it'll already be too late! Make sure to keep your ears open." He stressed the last words as hard as he could, Qiu nodding in response.
Soon, the water started to bubble over. Qiu perked up at the sound, pointing towards the water. "That's where the bad guy is! Look out, Bingo! Look out!" he shouted, a brilliant smile at his face. Bingo turned towards the sound, waiting patiently for new orders.
As he did, Curly burst from the waters looming over Bingo. "He's right where we want him, Curly! Use your signature Scary Face!" Elliot said. Compared to the nightmarish face Curly had given HYAH!, this was a lot more child friendly. His big mouth curved into his silly smile, his tongue lolled out of his mouth, and his eyes bugled in different directions. Worse still, he let out a serious of strained 'ooga booga!' noises, followed by a high pitched, scratchy laugh.
Qiu shot back in surprise, screaming before laughing. "Push him over!" he said between giggles, water splashing behind Bingo as he launched forward for an Aqua Jet. The snake went rigid and tipped over, falling back to the water.
However, before he could fall, a smile turned up at the corner of Elliot's mouth. " 'Bite,' " he mouthed, the two exchanging a quick wink. Before he could finish falling the Huntail rallied, coiling around in a beautiful circle as he slowly lunged towards Bingo. Qiu flinched away, and without anyone to give him instruction Bingo started nervously looking around. "Good thinking, Curly! We've got 'em surrounded on all sides! Forward, back, left, right, they can't dodge in any direction!" Elliot cheered, making sure to stress the four cardinal direction. Qiu didn't seem to get the memo. "I sure hope they can't think up a solution," he continued, stressing the word up as unsubtly as he could.
Immediately, Qiu perked up. "Bingo, that's it! Go up, then land on his big, dumb head!" he cheered. Bingo ducked down, then breached out of the water. Once he cleared Curly's head he used another Aqua Jet, pushing down to hit Curly right in the forehead! Unlike Bingo's previous, more unfocused moves, this one actually hurt some. Curly was pushed down into the waters, Bingo clapping a few times in amusement.
"Good job! If you hit an opponent when they're attacking, there's no way they can dodge," Elliot observed. "Curly, one more try! Swim away and use a Water Pulse!" The sea serpent swam away, firing a wide, weak pulse of water in Bingo's direction. Bingo flung his flippers up to block, the attack washing over him. "Good shot! Another one, Curly!" Elliot said, Curly charging up another Water Pulse. He was taking his damn time with it, too, making a shot of how he sucked in the surrounding water. "You'll never reach Curly in time!"
Qiu whined in despair. Elliot was right, he'd never reach Curly in time! Yet he didn't need to reach, did he? These cleverly-worded hints were really doing work for Qiu! "Rora Beam! Hurry!" he called, Bingo firing another Aurora Beam right at Curly. An icy chill hit the roof of his mouth, leaving his eyes rolling to the back of his head. He sunk beneath the waves, then bobbed back to the water's surface. With his tongue lolled out of his mouth, his eyes wide open, and his tail being pushed around by the waves, it was clear that he had been KO'd.
Sure, he was blatantly faking. But Qiu didn't know that.
"We did it!" Qiu cheered, running over to Bingo and hugging the Seel. He reattached its leash to its collar, all the while jumping up and down in excitement. "We did it, we did it, we did it! I can't wait to tell big sis I won my first battle! Thanks for the fight, mister!" He excitedly ran away from the group, waving and giggling. Soon Bingo went bouncing behind him, quickly overtaking his trainer and dragging him back down the shore.
Once they were out of eyesight, Curly shook the "unconsciousness" and swam over to Elliot. He grinned at him, lifting his head for some chin scratches. "Now that was a heck of a show you put on! Couldn't have picked a better Pokemon for it," he said. "I think the kid came away from this with some good lessons, too. Once he gets a Pokemon of his own, I bet he'll be kicking some serious butt on the schoolyard."
"Or maybe he'll come back and kick your behind for real," a new, but familiar voice rang out. Lynn, smug-faced, had just emerged from her capture of Pichu when she saw the end of the fight. "Good thing I've got four Pokemon now - wouldn't want to get beaten to it by a six-year old," she said. Was there a double meaning there?
"That was pretty cool of you though. Teach 'em while they're young and all that," she added, tone awkwardly sincere. "You could be a battle tutor," she mused. "Unless you want to be something else? I never did ask you if you had any ambitions, did I?"
Lynn noticed Echo's new accessory. "Woah, you look adorable, Echo," she commented. "I guess you and Pichu both like flowers, huh? Speaking of..."
Lynn thumbed the capsule of Pichu's Nest Ball and the bright yellow rodent materialised next to Lynn. Oshawott, who'd since been picked up and carried back by Lynn, snorted at the sight. Wolfie, likewise, was back to perching on Lynn's shoulder.
The Pichu sniffed curiously and looked between Lynn and Elliot. He then saw Echo, ran up to her and started gushing at how adorable she looked with the flower in her hair, chattering excitedly.
Lynn shot a proud grin towards Elliot as she happily showed off her latest catch. "You know, since meeting you, I've caught at least two quote-on-quote rare Pokemon today. You don't happen to be a good luck charm, do you? Or is it your boyish looks attracting all the cute Pokemon?" she teased.
"Anyhow, it's a gorgeous day still, so let's get walking. Maybe we'll find some more cool Pokemon?"
