Nyeh. Why did it have to rain today? Fortunately it wasn't coming down very hard. More of a sprinkle for now, but just enough to be mildly annoying and make his hair a little frizzy. Blugh. Ah well.
Liam wasn't here to sit and contemplate the weather. He was actually here for a few different reasons. First of all, he had to take a few reports from some ferry workers who had had their engine damaged, allegedly by a passenger. Then, he needed to figure out how to get to Plum with this ferry down, or wait... what was it now? Two, three hours? for the next one to arrive. That didn't sound fun.
Most of the witness reports, if they could even be called witnesses at this point, turned out to be pretty useless for his investigation, but he kept a faint smile on and politely thanked them for their time regardless. One lady, though, one of the cleaning ladies on the ferry, did have an account of seeing someone enter the engine room not long before the engine was damaged. She didn't get a very good look, so it wasn't much to go on. But "a dark-skinned young man, or maybe a thin woman, with long violet hair" was a heck of a lot more interesting to him than descriptions of the engine damage with no real context. He assured her and later the captain that he'd pass this along to the Ranger Union before leaving, but...
As luck would have it, he did happen to notice someone matching the woman's description down at the end of a dock as he was walking away. Liam squinted, debating if that was more violet or indigo, but then shrugged. It had to be worth a quick peek at least, though he wasn't really sure what they expected him to do, actually. Being able to confirm "yeah this looks like sabotage and you don't sound like you did it yourselves" was all they really needed to get the insurance claims. But without catching the guy in the act, it wasn't like he could just walk up and be like, "hey, confess to this crime or else", or worse, politely ask, "excuse me, but have you bashed in a ferry engine recently?" Because that'd go well. So maybe this was a waste of time after all, actually...
But just as he was thinking of saying "nevermind", the suspect released a Pokemon into the water. This might not have been noticeable from this distance in most cases, but this particular Pokemon was a ginormous ass blue whale, and Liam's eyes widened a bit. ... Huh! Well that was one way to cross the channel, huh?
Approaching further, Liam called out, "Hey there, excuse me!" Once he had the person's attention and had gotten a little closer, he asked, "I don't suppose you and your large friend are headed to Plum, by any chance? And if you are... got room for one more?" He flashed a small but wry smile. The guy probably had room for 50 more on that thing, hehe.

Gabe didn’t need a reason for destroying a ferry’s engine, but if made to give a reason, he would say it suited him. In reality it went something more along the lines of: he’d caught sight of a few PNG members getting onboard and felt the need to take it out on something other then them physically…. So instead, he’d decided to set it back a bit and let Liz wreck something that wouldn’t bleed out if poked and prodded too much. Now, though, they actually… needed to get to Plum, and he only had one Pokemon with him that would make the journey so… eheh. Ah well.
In a flash, a Wailord took form in the water, and just like in the training ground’s kiddie pool, Waillis took up most of the water space around him. It would make for a smooth ride, though, and that was all that mattered— Hey there, excuse me! “Hm?” Gabe’s eyes flashed sideways and met those of… Hm. Why was he getting “ranger” vibes just now. He hadn’t heard it in any thoughts, but…. Gabe forced a smile and dragged a few fingers through his hair. “Oh hello there~ Yes we were just headed to Plum, actually,” he answered. The request eased a bit of his nerves, though, as he was quicker to assume Liam was just someone from the ferry trying to get a ride now. “It’ll cost you ten pen though…” he laughed a little at that.

As the stranger looked his way and pushed the hair out of his face, Liam took in his features and... oh. He was very very pretty wasn't he? Not that he was going to get all flustered or anything, but wow he did appreciate the view. He smiled brightly when the guy said he was in fact going to Plum, only to be caught off-guard by his condition. "Hm?"
After a moment, though, he chuckled softly. "That seems fair." Ten pen wasn't much, after all. If the guy had been charging and arm and a leg, that would've been annoying if not suspicious. But such a small fee seemed reasonable. Liam dug out his wallet and handed over a 10 Pen bill before tucking it away again. "My name's Liam, by the way. How about you?" As he followed the stranger to the edge of the dock to get on the Wailord's back, he added, "Guess we might as well get to know each other on the trip, huh?"

Gabe felt his lips quirk a little more as he caught those stray thoughts on how pretty he was. That was always nice, whether said out loud or not. He grinned a bit as ten pen was agreed upon and took the money happily. “Ah, call me Gabe,” he answered. “Nice to meet you.”
Hopping onto the Wailord’s back, he turned and extended a hand out to Liam to help him on if he wanted. “Sounds nice,” he mused at the suggestion. “What are you headed to Plum for?” He supposed he should answer his question anyways. Gabe waited for Liam to answer before actually responding, though. “I have a house in Cherry Town, so I’m just headed home. Plum just happens to be on the way.” That was at least partially truthful. He did have a house and some land out there now... and he did... start to see it as more of 'home' than Bass, oddly enough, heh.

Gabe, right. Liam would do his best to remember it. "Nice to meet you, too, Gabe." He took the guy's offered hand to help balance as he stepped off the dock and onto the whale. And wow, what a strange feeling. Liam didn't have the best sea legs even on a boat. Now instead of a solid floor beneath his feet, it was a slightly uneven slick wet skin of a giant mammal, subtly rising and falling with its breath in addition to rocking slightly in the waves. Liam wobbled a little before finding his footing and moving a bit inward to the middle of the Wailord for maximum stability.
"I'm just gonna... sit down," he said, excusing himself to do just that with a slightly nervous laugh. Traveling on the back of a whale in the rain was not ideal, but it was cheaper than a lot of alternatives and faster than waiting for the next ferry, so he wouldn't complain.
"Hm? So Gabe lived out in Cherry, huh? "Ah. As for me..." Well, he actually had two reasons, but, "I'm making the rounds for work. I'm a Ranger, so I have to travel a lot." The other reason was that he needed to contact his Chimera superiors discreetly to see if they had any work for him to do. But of course, if he said that out loud, people tended to think Chimera supporters were either crazy or criminals or both, and he certainly wouldn't want anyone to get that idea about him.
"You know I mostly travel between Bass, Birch, and Plum since they're the three biggest cities in Arciel. I've lived here for nearly a year and haven't even bothered finding a proper apartment or house yet since it's more convenient to just stay at Pokemon Centers or a Ranger Base wherever I happen to be." He frowned slightly. "Though it does mean I can't have too much stuff. I keep a small storage locker in Bass since it's in the middle of the three, but yeah." He smiled sheepishly and rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm rambling, sorry! But the point was it might be nice to think about settling down eventually. Having a home base to go back to even if I'm not there every night, and somewhere nicer to keep my stuff. How IS Cherry Town? I've only been there a few times."

A small laugh escaped from Gabe as he followed after Liam. He wouldn’t sit down, having become sort of accustomed to riding on Waillis among other Pokemon. Instead, he remained standing but reached in the back of his mind for that power. ‘Let’s get moving, Waillis.’ And with that, the Wailord started moving rocking a bit more than usual just to actually get going. Gabe felt his legs tense, but in no way did he fall.
Yellow eyes flicked back to Liam as he spoke. I was right?? Was this… just sort of psychic intuition or was he developing some sort of hyper sense or maybe even…. Please not future sight. Not after that woman had… had… Gabe pushed the matter from his mind right then. Luckily, Liam was rambling a little— as were his thoughts. Had Gabe just heard Chimera just now? Heh, my what a contradiction hm? Well, maybe not.
So he traveled in between the three big cities. That made sense enough. The lack of a house wasn’t too surprising considering how many (including Gabe himself) sort of just traveled and crashed but…. Ah, he’d stopped ‘rambling’. Gabe chuckled.
“Cherry Town is comfortable,” Gabe answered the question with a softer smile. “I bought some land on a whim and then realized it was a nice place to come home to. That’s sort of how it started. Now I’ve got land and Pokemon that take care of it and animals…” And for all they were and all they weren’t, they were his. “The property is almost on the water as well…”
A pause before he got too invested in his own words. Gabe smiled sideways at Liam again. “I appreciate rangers. You do quite a lot of good work,” A lie but a rather innocuous one. “Feel free to come by any time, and I’ll treat you.” He had nothing to hide there at least.

Liam was a little amazed at how easily Gabe stayed standing even when the Wailord began swimming. He must have a lot of practice.
He listened as Gabe described the sleepy little town. It fit the image Liam had gotten the few times he was there, but helped him paint a little better picture in his mind. Oh wow, and animals even? A proper farm then! And on the water, ooh. "It sounds so nice."
When Gabe offered to treat him, Liam smiled sweetly. "That would be so lovely. It's always nice to feel appreciated." Surely this couldn't be the guy who bashed in the boat. A real criminal wouldn't be so friendly toward a Ranger, right?
"So hey," he started, "tell me about your animals! I've only really seen them in zoos and stuff before. Other than like songbirds and bugs of course, but those don't count. I know they're not as smart as Pokemon and people, but I hear they can still have pretty interesting quirks and stuff? I dunno, the idea kind of fascinates me."

For a moment, the smile on Gabe’s face heightened to a bright but genuine expression. For all he was and all he wasn’t, he was proud of that farm. It was bought and paid for with his own money and run by his own Pokemon. It sustained him and his Pokemon entirely by what it produced, and and and—
Yes, yes he would tell Liam about the animals. “I have hens, a rooster, a goat, a sheep, and a few heads of cattle,” he answered with that continued genuine excitement on the matter. “I actually also have a Chansey that looks after the chickens and sometimes produces as egg as well; she likes them quite a lot and they seem to treat her well….” Gabe paused and snickered. “They actually don’t like me too much, but I think they’re one of those creatures that picks one other non-chicken creature to like, and Bliss got to them before me…” Or at least that was how Gabe chose to interpret that. “My favorite one’s name is Eggcelent.”
“I have a Gogoat and a regular goat; the regular goat will eat just about anything, so it’s nice to have a Gogoat around to direct her.” A Gogoat with any sense of taste at all. “I used to ride the Gogoat around, but she seems to prefer being on the farm so…” He shrugged his shoulders a bit and then glanced down at the Wailord. “I have other means of travel.” Ah but he had one more set to talk about, yeah? “The cows are…” Gabe paused unsure of how to even begin to describe them. They were…. weird creatures with weird habits, and he wasn’t entirely sure about them but… “My favorite is Cowabunga the head of the Steering Committee…” he decided to say instead.

Liam listened intently as Gabe talked about his different creatures he had roaming the farm. Honestly, he was utterly enthralled. How fascinating that such creatures could exist and be such an important part of livelihood for people and Pokemon alike and yet still be such a rare sight to the average citizen. Liam almost wanted to take Gabe up on that hospitality offer just to see them.
He snorted lightly at the name Eggcellent, and later laughed a bit more openly at Cowabunga and her lengthy title. "That's amazing," he said back. "It's a shame the chickens don't like you, but I hear birds can just be Like That. I think some bird Pokemon are the same way, though not all of course, heh." Pokemon had personalities as varied as people, but there were still trends. Stereotypes came from somewhere after all.
"It sounds like you really have your hands full. Do you have any help around the farm, or is it just you and your Pokemon caring for everything?"
[attr="class","fadednjadedtag"] Gabe Alim 170 Words
Gabe couldn’t help shooting Liam a toothy grin back. Yes, he was proud of those names, very proud indeed. “I’m just glad they like someone,” he admitted a bit weakly after the fact. “It would be hard to deal with them otherwise.” Come to think of it, he didn’t really have many classic bird Pokemon now did he? Huh.
The question earned a small laugh. “Mostly the Pokemon take care of things,” he admitted. “There are a few neighbors in the area that will lend a hand and had lent a hand in getting me started.” …And maybe he was vaguely surprised and intrigued that he hadn’t had to use his psychic influence to get help but rather just had to ask for it. What do you know? Some people were just nice like that. “I have four Sceptile that take care of the land and trees too…. They keep trying to kidnap my friend’s Grovyle to add to their cohort, but I don't think she likes the work as much as they do,” Gabe laughed warmly at that, and a certain tenderness came and went from his features. “If I didn’t have them around, it would be a lot harder to orchestrate.”
Meanwhile, Waillis continued swimming on and shifted in a bit to avoid a sandbar that he was far too wide and deep to avoid getting beached on otherwise. Gabe swayed, nearly falling one way but managing to catch himself before actually falling. “Oi! Careful!” he called to the whale who just let out this deep rumbling apology back.

Liam chuckled softly. "Awww, yeah." If the chickens didn't even like the Pokemon it would probably be really hard to care for them or harvest their eggs.
Friendly neighbors sounded so nice! "That must be just lovely. I'm sure it adds to Cherry's charm." He'd never really had 'neighbors' that he'd count, living on an estate with so much ground around it and then not really solidly living anywhere the past year. Though he supposed having other Rangers around to help with little things in the bases wasn't too far off huh? If a little different because it was their shared job, not just shared location, that made them helpful. Still.
Liam's eyes went wide. "FOUR SCE- WOW." He gawked a moment at the thought, but before he could say much more, Gabe nearly fell. Liam was only halfway to his feet when Gabe steadied himself, and he breathed out a sigh of relief as he sat back down. "Ah... Are you sure you don't want to sit?"
Anyway... "Ah, how many Pokemon do you have anyway? It sounds like an awful lot. How long have you been training?"

A shaky half-breath came and went from Gabe. “I… yeah probably,” he agreed and slowly got down and then sat on the Wailord legs stretched out in front of him. Setting both hands behind himself, he leaned ever so slightly back. That was… a lot more stability, heh….
But the extra contact did send the reverberations of a certain Wailord’s thoughts riding up right into Gabe’s brain. <SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY> Gabe winced. Why was that so damn loud. Why did the volume increase when Pokemon were bigger. Whatever….
Shifting one hand up, he ran a few fingers through his hair trying to muster enough brain power to answer the simple question. “I have around a hundred Pokemon last I counted,” he started with glancing sideways at Liam. “Tecccchnically I’ve been training ten years, but I’ve only starting keeping so many after I had the farm.” He smirked a bit. It was hard to justify keeping so many when you were concerned about your own necessities at times, heh. After that, though…. "I caught the four Sceptile together on Route 4, actually, so they're really not that far away from 'home' either..."
Realizing he had somehow gotten into a loop of talking about himself, Gabe paused. "What about you? What kinds of Pokemon do you keep?"

Ahhh, Liam felt much better with Gabe sitting down, even if he'd gotten just a touch farther away in making room to stretch out now. It was probably about the same distance to talk though, just horizontal now instead of vertical when he was standing. Plus the rain remained a light sprinkle-- not heavy enough to make any real noise to talk over, just enough to be kind of cool as the day started warming up a bit. It would probably feel kind of muggy and miserable if it got too much hotter, but hopefully they'd be to Plum by then, heh.
Liam's jaw practically hit the Wailord's back and his eyes went wide. "A HUN- Holy crap." He couldn't even imagine, and let out an awkward laugh. "I have FIVE," he answered. Not even a full party just yet. "I've finally gotten pretty used to these and have been thinking about trying to expand more lately, but. Yeah, ha." He shook his head. "I got my Sandslash-- Alolan, not Kantonian, and back when he was a Sandshrew of course-- from Professor Holly just a few days after my now-Kadabra hatched. And I caught my now-Lurantis about two weeks into training. But for months those three were all I had, and then I kind of picked up my Servine and Musharna a bit later." Liam shook his head. Incredible. He could actually name all his Pokemon without even taking up too much time, and Gabe here had over a hundred.
"With summer coming up I've been thinking I need a good Water-type, just in case of wildfires. But I hear there are some Lotad and Lombre swarming on Route 2 lately, so I was going to head out there after I'm done with my business in Plum. See if I can find a unique-looking one, and maybe scour the route for any other interesting Water-types the beach might wash up, ya know?"
He thought a moment, then added, "I suppose a Fire-type would be really nice too, actually. See, I'm kind of into coordinating as a hobby and there's this Showcase coming up, and I have this song in mind I think would be really interesting for the theme, but it's got several lines about fire and I'm not really equipped to portray that right now, heh." Hopefully he could figure something out, though. It'd be really fun to compete.

A small laugh escaped from Gabe as Liam gawked at the sheer number of Pokemon he had. It was a lot. There was no denying that. As Liam described how many he had, though, Gabe blinked. “Five?” Not even a full party? Ah, he was relatively new to training then. Heh. Good to know I suppose…
At the mention of Water types, Gabe chuckled. “You could always get a Fire type to consume the flames rather than a Water type getting water everywhere,” he commented looking back with a grin. A pause, and Gabe figured he might as well. “My specialty are Fire Types actually,” he spoke a bit softer looking forward again. “Lizbeth, my Charmeleon was my starter, and I just sort of fell in love with the Typing after.” It wasn't technically a lie, but it wasn't entirely the truth either. Gabe smiled a little softer.
“Of course I do raise other Pokemon like my Sceptile and…” He slowly leaned forward and pat the Wailord. ‘Calm down already, I forgive you’ “This guy…” A low rumbling sound reverberated from the Wailord. “What kind of Fire type are you looking for?”

Oh, he was a specialist? How interesting! Liam smiled and pet the Wailord gently when Gabe called attention to him. He wasn't sure it would even register with the massive creature versus just feeling more or less like a gust of wind across his skin, but oh well.
"I've never really seen the draw in specializing unless you're a gym leader, but I suppose having a favorite type and still keeping a few others for diversity makes sense enough." Which sounded like what Gabe was doing, having a LOT of Fire-types but not exclusively those or anything. "I'm fairly fond of Grass and Psychic so far, but that's eighty percent of what I've ever had so I'm probably biased." He chuckled softly.
When Gabe asked what he was looking for, Liam put a finger to the side of his face in thought. "Hm..." What would his most ideal Fire-type be? "Something flashy, I suppose. And medium-sized. Not so big it draws attention away from the rest of my Pokemon, but not so small it's hard for the audience to see. Hrmmm..." What fit those descriptions? "Ninetales is a classic in the contest scene, of course, but maybe that's a bad thing? Like the judges will probably have seen so many before, it might be harder to stand out. Mm... Monferno or Infernape seem like they have a lot of energy, and their open flames would be nice and flashy. Or... Braixen has always had a special place in my heart. An acquaintance of mine had one back in Kalos, and she was always really neat." What else, what else... "Oh, Alolan Marowak with its green flames and penchant for dancing would be fun, too, or Chandelure with its indigo and hypnotic gestures."
Liam grinned. "Really, though, so long as it could learn a few good moves, I'm not too picky~"

A light, a fire, flashed into Gabe’s eyes as he listened to Liam describe the various Fire type Pokemon he might be interested in. He had a Ninetales (and a Vulpix), and he had an Infernape (whom he needed to get back on good terms with whoops hahaha), and he had two Delphox and….
Oh, heh. Hehehehehe. Gabe chuckled a bit more, his shoulders shaking some. “Would you believe I have all of the Pokemon you just listed? Or some of their evolutions, anyways….” Gabe flashed a warm, wild grin again. “Technically two Delphox rather than a Braixen but… My Alolan Marowak is even shiny, and my Chandelure is Arcelian colored.” There was a sort of cheesiness that came to his features and voice as he spoke. This fell away to something a little more relaxed again. “If you’d like I could probably breed you one~” he winked at that.

Liam blinked a few times in disbelief. "Wow, really?" He wasn't kidding about being a Fire specialist, apparently! Though, ah... he did like Braixen much more than Delphox, but he felt it would be rude to say as much aloud in this context. So he just nodded as Gabe described some of his Pokemon. "Oh, uniquely colored Pokemon are so much fun! I hope I'll be able to get some someday," he mused.
At the offer of breeding, his brows rose, and he thought it over. "Oh? Ah... I guess out of all of them... I'd probably most like a Chimchar or a Fennekin~" he chimed. Then a realization darkened his expression. "Ah, but the showcase is pretty soon. If I was lucky I might be able to train a wild-caught Pokemon with a good disposition in time, especially since the routine I have in mind isn't too complicated really. But the time it'd take to hatch an egg and train a baby might be a bit much..." He scratched the side of his face a bit.
As another thought occurred to him, he laughed lightly. "I don't suppose I could just borrow one of yours to compete with, huh?" It was a joke, but like, on the off chance Gabe said yes... he would not complain hahaha.

“Ahhh, hmmm,” Gabe hummed a little thoughtfully at the realization. He supposed that was a time crunch wasn’t it? Especially when baby Pokemon could be so finnicky and strained in those first few weeks of life. As the thought arose thereafter, Gabe paused. There was a gut reaction of no, but hmmmm. Well, heh, maybe having a ranger indebted to him could be a perk later, actually.
A small laugh escaped from Gabe right after. “I wouldn’t mind,” he answered. “So long as my Pokemon are up for it, anyways.” He could already imagine Daphne and Merli wouldn’t want to go without one another, and some of his others were far more finniky than not but. “Come to think of it, Spirit, the Alolan Marowak, might be the best fit. He’s rather agile for being smaller than average. Too bad I don't have him with me right now, or I'd introduce you.” Then again with this soft soaking rain in the middle of the channel, Gabe wasn't sure he'd want to dump any of his Fire cohort into it, exactly.

H-huh!? Liam blinked. Was Gabe just fucking with him or...? No? He went on to name a specific Pokemon he thought would work, and?? Liam's face slowly lit up. "That would be absolutely amazing!!! Hmm... "Ah, maybe when I'm done with my business in Plum I could take you up on your offer to see your farm? Meet him there and stuff?" He gave a somewhat sheepish smile. "I mean all your Pokemon sound so incredible, I'd love to see all of them, but... yeah~" He chuckled softly.
This was the part of he conversation where someone else might have asked if there was anything they could do to repay Gabe for his kindness, but Liam was kind of a little prick about these things so there was that.

Oh, oh no that was kind of cute. The look on Liam’s face had Gabe finding an equally bright smile on his features, and a small laugh escaped from him right after. “I mean, I’m not really a performer”— In that sense, and because he knew a certain someone would probably be there— “But I wouldn’t deny my Pokemon the opportunity to be there.” And maybe if Liam won, he’d split some prize money with him, heh. Granted, that depended on how well it turned out.
“Ah… that’s a good idea,” Gabe reasoned back right after. It would piss off a couple Pidgey with one stone. See the animals, see the Pokemon, meet Spirit. Yeah. “Sure, how long do you think business’ll last? Actually, you wanna swap numbers and just let me know when you’re free?” he asked.
