The day was clear. It was shortly after midnight when he had left his home outside of Pine Town. He got to Birch City right before dawn and was at the Rangers outpost hours before anyone had expected him. He was eager. This particular cog in the mechanism had been looking for his calling for a long time and now he thought he had found it to say he was eager was an understatement.
Of course he felt like a dork showing up as eager as he did but the Rangers were a kind bunch. They were happy to set him up with his future partner and the small Rookidee they had gifted to him seemed to not be so sure. She has quickly taken to plucking at his ponytail for the remainder of his time at the outpost.
Resolving to leave the little scamp in her Pokeball for now though Oliver headed north out of Birch City. Myco, however, was clasped firmly to his shoulder. The small bug Pokemon had often used him for roost in their travels. Ollie pet him softly as they made their way north. Sure home was back south but he knew if he was going to be a Ranger worth his mettle he would need to make sure he was familiar with the region. What better way to find out then one hell of a road trip.

As the path curved down over the top of a shallow hill Ollie stopped suddenly. At the bottom of the hill, standing in the middle of the path was a small gray Pokemon. Myco scittered down tje front of his trainer and headed down the path. Ollie followed suit. Becoming aware that it was an Espurr staring out towards the western horizon. From his vantage point he couldn’t see what exactly it was looking at.
Nothing stood out as they closed the distance between them though the small Pokemon didn’t seem to take notice to their presence either. The Paras stood before the Espurr waving his claws back and forth as he stood on his hind legs, still barely meeting it’s short height.
”What are you staring at bud?” Ollie lowered himself down to a knee, trying to line his sight up with the Espurr though all he could see was sky and the tall grass that grew up on either side of the path. A puzzled look formed across his face as he tried to piece it together. Moving himself into the Pokemon’s line of sight he lowered himself to eye level with the creature. It’s wide, pink eyes looked right through him. There was absolutely no recognition that they were even there. It just gazed.
Ollie sat himself down in front of the Pokemon, crossing his legs under him and lined himself to be staring directly back to the Espurr’s eyes. Myco seemed to be confused by this. Looking between his trainer and the Pokemon and back again.
”Okay fine. But at least we can get you out of the road.” Standing up to his full height Ollie reached out gingerly to lift the Pokemon by each of its sides. With tender hands he placed it on a large rock just off of the path though, just out of curiosity, turned it to face the other way.
The Espurr blinked, the first it had blinked as long as they had watched it, and looked up to the Ranger. Ollie froze a twinge apparent in his mind as the hair on the back of his neck stood up. Then it simply looked away. Relined its body with its original direction and went back to it’s gazing. The Ranger shrugged with a slight chuckle and leaned down to pick up Myco before they continued on their path.
The day was clear, you say? NOT ANYMORE. In a matter of seconds it looks like a cloud front's rolled in, dark, looming things promising either a really nasty thunderstorm, or a heavy downpour of rain. Or perhaps nothing at all, maybe they're there just to look scary. Regardless, it's enough to send the few lingering pokemon scattering for cover, so it might be best to look for some shelter soon? Or you could just ignore it out and tough it out like Rangers do since a little rain never hurt anyone, the choice is yours!

The clouds above took a turn for the worst. What had at first been ideal traveling weather seemed to have decided on a mood swing. Not such a huge surprise for being in a coastal area. Myco seemed a bit more concerned as some fat drops of rain started to cascade down from the dark clouds. Nothing too heavy at first but they were definitely looking at some heavy rain for at least the immediate future.
Ollie stopped, swinging his pack off of his back and laying it on the ground in from of him for a moment. The Paras scurried to the ground, watching the weather change as Ollie produced a wide-brimmed hat and a poncho.
”Choice is yours, little buddy. You can ride under the poncho if you want but no promises on staying dry.” He offered out Myco’s Pokeball as an alternative as well, they Pokemon considered for a moment before tapping the ball with his claw and activating it. Ollie sighed and shook his head with a grin.
”Can’t say I blame you. This one looks like it might be a doozy.” He fit the ball into it’s spot on his belt and finished reloading his backpack. First he put on the pack, then the poncho and topped it all off with the hat. Sure, the shortish Ranger probably looked a little foolish but he had plenty of time spent in the wild. He knew better than to leave home without being prepared for inclimate weather.
As he tied off the sides of the poncho the rain really began to set in. He could see a bunch of the wildlife making for a patch of trees down the path. There was no intention of stopping but no one said he couldn’t make his way through the path of least resistance right? So Ollie moved down the path heading towards the treeline.
Making for the patch of trees seemed to be a good idea! As you head down there, the pokemon that dart into the brush and up into some of the trees give you more than enough space, whether intentionally or not. As the rain begins to come down harder, the earth underfoot turns quickly to mud, and you can just pick out something small and pink quivering underneath one of the nearby trees. Closer inspection reveals it to be...

NOTES
Tag: This pokemon was found clutching the remains of a broken pokeball. Clearly it had a trainer; had being the key word here. But it looks like this is just another case of an abandoned baby pokemon left to fend for its own after being labelled too weak to be worth raising.
Ollie picked up his pace as he grew closer to the tree line. The rain was quickly making each step much more work as his boots began to stick in the mud. Still he had his arms tucked in the pocho, holding his back, as he trudged through. The wind would have took his hat had he not secured it by a string under his chin though the trees seemed to do a decent job breaking up the weather some as it was notably less blustery once he broke the treeline. But it was far from safe from the storm.
The Pokemon seemed to keep clear from him as he made his way though. It was surprising. He was sure that being the first stop for all sorts of new Trainers there was a much more aggressive rate of battles and catch attempts than anywhere else. But one very small thing caught his eye. The pink was what caught his eye. Just off the trail huddles by a something white and red that seemed to be set in the mud.
Stepping off the trail Ollie’s arms emerged to help him steady himself on the sloppy, uneven ground. He slipped a few times but the closer her got the more he swore he could hear crying. Reaching the tree he crouched over the small shape, his body blocking some of the rain as he reached down.
His hand hadn’t even touched the Cleffa when it turned to look at him with the biggest, most pitiful eyes he had ever seen. Well maybe not the biggest. As this was easily the smallest Cleffa he had seen in his entire life. He seemed to bareilly stand over 6 inches tall.
”H-hey big guy. Don’t worry it’s just a storm…” Ollie huddled around him more so to try and stop the rain. In the hands of the little Pokemon was the top half of a Pokeball. The red finished seemed caked with mud and the Cleffa kept pressing his small hand against the broken button that was still attached. It didn’t take Ollie long to put together that this little guy had been abandoned.
”Oh no…” Tears welled up in Ollie’s eyes as he scooped up the little Pokemon. Drawing him into the Poncho Oliver sat in the mud, soaking his bottom half instantly as he drew his head into the Ponch leaving the had sticking out the neck hole. He did his best to make a makeshift tent to keep the small Pokemon from the elements. Cleffa seemed shocked at the sudden action of the Ranger and it’s tears welled heavy in it’s eyes as they began to roll down it’s cheeks. Ollie hushed the small Pokemon and held it close.
”Poor guy. You’ve been through so much.” He sniffled heavily trying to speak through the mucus build up that was slowly winning.
”But I’m here. I’m with you big guy. Don’t worry. I’ll make sure you’re safe if it’s the last thing I do.” He hugged the Pokemon hard as the two wept in the makeshift, poncho-tent of the Ranger just barely keeping the rain at bay.

The two bonded over empathic tears. Ollie knew all too well what it was like to be a tiny guy in a big scary world. Maybe not to that degree but enough to empathize. The abandonment, intentional or otherwise, was more than he could ever relate to. But he could be there. That much he knew. Pulling out a Pokeball he held it up to the Cleffa, presenting the button on it’s face.
”Let’s get you dry and warm. I promise you’ll be safe.” The Pokemon looked up, deep into his eyes. Barely a moment passed and the Cleffa dropped the broken ball it had been clinging too and pressed both hands into the button instantly energizing himself. The Pokeball pinged instantly and Oliver took a moment for himself to finish the stream of tears. He was so happy to have been able to be here for this little guy. Had he never decided to become a ranger, had he stayed home in Pine town and just got a job at the mine he would have never crossed this little man’s path. He shuttered to think what he would have done on his own but he shook away the thought. It didn’t matter anymore. Atlas, he decided to name him, was his partner now and nothing was going to change that.
Wiping away the tears he popped his head out of his impromptu shell. Immediately he was met with the cold stinging rain and wind. Still. He stood, wiping what mud he could from his pants before making his way back onto the trail. Though he moved slowly the determined Ranger kept his head down and his feet moving, determined to not let the weather stop him.

It was a slow trudge through the muddy path of the forest. Though he knew the wooded parts of the Route were never to thick it still seemed to be some time til he came to a break in the treeline that opened into the wide plains once more. Ollie stood there for a moment, wind tugging on his clothes and the rain dripping from the wide brim of his hat.
He watched as the rain swept down in sheets over the open area. The tall grass moved in unison showing in real time the way the wind swept across the land. It was a terrifying and exhilarating sight, seeing nature’s capabilities. Being so close to the coast always made such inclimate weather all the more powerful. Still he saw no other travelers. Just nature left to its own devices. Ollie heaved a sigh as he took in the view, a small grin forming on his face.
Something caught his eye as he went to step away though. Something small and pink though this time not a small Pokemon in need of salvation. But rather an Apricorn, dangling as the sole survivor of a small tree that had been battered by the storm. Walking over he plucked it from its stem, rubbed the surface on his poncho and tucked it away into his pocket. He had wanted to try his hand at some of the crafts he had heard about with such items. Besides what sort of a Ranger would he be if he couldn’t make the most out of the land?
Tightening the tie beneath his stubbled chin Ollie braced himself and stepped out into the open wind of the storm, keeping his northward barring.

The wind seemed to be doing a decent job with carrying out some of the more detrimental storm clouds. Ollie watched them move further inland and get swapped out for some slightly lighter clouds that came down to a slight drizzle. The ranger scoffed and shook his head as he muttered to himself.
”If you don’t like the weather on the coast, wait five minutes.” He repeated his fathers saying that he always spouted when insisting the travel inland versus along the coast. The storm had already done quite some damage, pieces of trees and upturned plants lined the pathway heading up the root. Pulling out a Pokeball Oliver released Gwendolyn into the path before him.
”Gweny can you do me a favor and- OW!” As soon as he began to speak she flew up to around his head, picking at hair of his didn’t fit under the hat.
”Can you-! Hey-! Okay I get it you’re very funny. Serious time Gwendolyn!” The small mans face grew flustered as he held out his arm and she, with a few strains of green hair, landed on his arm.
”Can you do a loop around, PLEASE.” He emphasized to her with a solemn look in his eyes. ”It’s our job to make sure no one got caught too bad in this storm.” The two looked each other over for a moment before she took to the air. Ollie sighed as he watched her take off and began moving the brush from the road. There were a fewer larger boughs from a tree that looked to be in pretty good shape. Handiness still in mind he stripped these down of their smalled branches and got to work on fixing them to his pack he managed to slip out of his poncho.

As Ollie moved the last of the debris out of the road there was a loud caw overhead as Gwendolyn announced her return. But she was pursued however, by a large Hoothoot that seemed to be doing it’s best to keep on her tail. Behind her ran a trainer, seemed to be a bit younger than Ollie but not by much, who looked disappointed as Gwendolyn came to land on Ollie’s shoulder.
”Aw man, it already has a trainer. I wanted to catch that Rookidee too.” The Hoothoot landed beside him, bouncing back and forth as it switched feet faster than the eye could see.
”Well since you’re a trainer let’s battle! My Hoothoot against your Rookidee.” The boy seemed determined as if earning a victory would negate his not being able to capture Gwendolyn.
”Well I’m not really a trainer. I’m a ranger. Gwendolyn is my Partner Pokemon we don’t really do the-” The small Rookidee hopped from his shoulder and swooped down at the Hoothoot as if issuing a challenge of her own. Ollie sighed and rubbed his temples. The trainer seemed equally as excited at the spunk of the much smaller bird.
”Alright Gwen. Let’s do this.” The tension built in the air as the two birds took to the sky. Hoots and caws could be heard carried in the still somewhat formidable wind as the two soared overhead.
”Hoothoot tackle that pipsqueak!” ”Leer at her Gwen.”
The two trainer approached the commands very differently. The trainers voice dripped with anticipation and excitement where as Ollie’s was more of worry and distaste for a battle of sport. The Hoothoot clipped Gwen with relative ease though the Rookidees eyes glew and she scowled down her opponent making it uneasy.
”Hit her with a Peck now.” ”Hypnosis!”
As Gwendolyn flew in for a mad flurry of pecks the Hoothoot’s eyes were overtaken by a fierce pink energy as it tried to encapsulate Gwendolyn. The small bird’s lids grew heavy and started to close but she shook herself free at the last moment and dove away. The bird keeper groaned in protest.
”Fine! Then tackle that punk again!” The trainer called out and the Hoothoot followed in Gwens dive down towards the ground. The much larger bird overtook her quickly, gravity more at play than their respective speeds and tackled the small bird as she banked up forcing them both into the ground. Ollie quickly moved himself to get a better view and was relieved to see Gwen climbing up to her feet though the Hoothoot seemed unfazed by the attack.
”Power Trip!” A fierce spark overtook Gwen’s eye as she popped up into the air, her small wings beating wickedly as she tore at the Hoothoot with her claws, a dark miasma coating them as she did. The Hoothoot cried out and hopped backwards but lost her footing and rolled onto her feathered back.
”Get off the ground Hoothoot! Tackle!”
Determination popped into the bird's eyes as it flapped its wings and pulled itself off the ground. Gwen was in close pursuit trying to stay close to the Pokemon and keep it from gaining too much momentum but the Hoothoot stopped short and suddenly changed direction forcing its body to slam into Gwendolyn with gusto. Her small blue body bounced off him and she lost her bearings for a moment but was fluttering upright after a moment. Both the Pokemon were still flying though Hoothoot seemed to be lulling more towards the ground.
”Peck!” There was a gleam in Gwen’s eyes as she shot forward, a sheen of blue light overtaking her beak as she drove it into the opponent's Hoothoot and assuring it made its way back to the ground and following suit for the next round of attacks.
”Okay okay.” ”Back!” Ollie called out in a stern voice and Gwendolyn did stop though with a glare in her partners direction. She fluttered over lazily and gave Ollie’s ear a tug for good measure. The bird keeper went to his Pokemon’s side and Ollie met him there.
”Is she alright? That was a rough dog fight.” Ollie’s concern was lost on the trainer who shot him a scowl and a faint nod before returning the Hoot Hoot.

Ollie saw off the bird keeper who seemed to hold the victory against him much to the Ranger’s chagrin. He did not like the feeling of regret that he had for the victory but he hadn’t been the one to issue the challenge in the first place. Still he wasn’t one to turn down some funds and supplies that he could use to better his team.
The rain finally let way and a few streams of sunshine broke through the clouds that covered the sky. Pulling out his second Pokeball he released Atlas into his hand. The tiny Pokemon seemed shocked by the sudden change of scenery and turned in the palm of his hand to face him.
”You doing alright, big man?” Gwendolyn made a mocking series of caws that sounded like laughter but Ollie shot her a stern look and shrugged the shoulder she was standing on.
”Excuse me?” A sweet scent caught his attention as a woman in a lovely floral dress, clutching a still dripping umbrella, approached.
”Hello, I’m not a trainer if that’s what you’re thinking.”
”No actually I overheard that you’re a Ranger and well...I thought maybe you could help me?” This request caught Ollie’s attention right away and he spun to face her directly. Tucking Atlas into the fold where his collar met he clutched his fist in determination and faced he with a nod.
”At your service ma’am. How can I help?” This was what he had signed up for. The chance to make a difference. To help the people. Really get out there and partner with his Pokemon not just live for silly trainer battles but a higher cause!
”I have some Pokemon that are fairly new to me and I’m trying to get them some fighting experience but...they are quite tame and I was hoping you could help me get them some more battle experience.” She presented a pokeball in front of her and with a slight lobe a flash of light revealed an Aromatisse.
Ollie tried not to sigh but he felt as if his own personal rain cloud had come in to damper his day. But it made sense. If he was going to be working so closely with Pokemon battles were inevitable and if he could help a nice lady strengthen her Pokemon on the way then that was going to be his silver lining.
”I’d be happy to help. We could use some toughening up too so it works for both of us. Let’s agree to keep the kid gloves on though, no one will learn if everyone leaves fainted, right?.” Ollie offered warmly with a smile, the woman returned it with a nod of agreement. Lifting Atlas back into his palm he gave the pocket Pokemon a look of reassurance before looking across to the other Pokemon. It took him a moment of putting it together but with a quick hug to Ollie’s thumb Atlas jumped from his perch and floated leisurely to the ground.

Seeing the Cleffa standing opposite the Aromatisse made Ollie gulp. He knew big things came in small packages but he suddenly understood his mothers concern when he was younger. But he wouldn’t get any stronger without any faith.
”You’ve got this Atlas. Give them a Charm!” The tiny Pokemon spun on one foot chirping an adorable little song that warmed Ollie to his core.
”Sweet Scent Aromatisse, just like we practiced.” The opposing Pokemon, easily four times Atlas’s size, shook her feathers and did a dance of her own bolstering herself with an entrancing aroma. Another gulp.
”Let’s give them a Pound attack Atlas.” He stood for a moment and bolstered himself. Ollie wasn’t sure what to expect but when the little man shot forward moving quickly as he bounced between his tiny legs and jumped up to slap the Aromatisse across the face he was overcome with surprise. They all were really. There was a silent moment as they all stared in shock, the Aromatisse included. It’s eyes narrowed and like that, the battle was on.
”Fairy wind!” A glittering burst of glowing pink mist wisped out to strike Atlas as he was still floating to the ground. It pushed him back and he let out a small cry as he took the strike but when he landed on the ground he pulled himself back up.
”You’re doing great Atlas! Pound them again!” The little Pokemon floated across to deliver another disproportionate blow. Though the ways the hits were landing Ollie wouldn’t be surprised if this Pokemon were evolved the moment it hatched. She struck out with another Fairy Wind though Atlas made it to the ground this time and while still taking the full hit he was not blown away. Both of the Pokemon were in rough shape but Ollie knew if they could manage to get one more hit off it would make the difference but feeling that resolved set him beside himself for a moment and he stepped forward to pick up his Cleffa.
”That’s enough for now. Both our Pokemon got some fight time in. Lets call that one? I don’t want to knock out your Aromatisse.” The woman seemed surprised for a moment but agreed, returning her Aromatisse and sending out an Illumise. Gwen shifted on his shoulder and jumped down into battle but he quickly returned her.
”No no, Myco’s got this one.” He didn’t like the idea of his Flying type having the type advantage so he sent out his Paras, who stood significantly smaller than the opponent. A trend he wasn’t fond of.
”Tackle attack!” The larger bug jumped forward and Pressed the Paras into the ground. It chittered in protest.
”Scratch it!” The sharp claws of Myco lashed out and caught purchase against the opposing Pokemon’s carapace. The two separated again and with another call out in unison the two Pokemon clashed together once more. Again it caught Ollie off guard the effect of his smaller Pokemon’s blows. This woman wasn’t kidding that she had some need to strengthen these Pokemon up.
”You’re doing great Illumise, tackle him again!” The Pokemon slammed Paras back, his legs digging into the ground as he kept himself from being thrown to far back. Unfortunately for Ollie he hadn’t put a lot of work into Paras’s other attacks so he didn’t have a slew of options to give her a chance to get in some extra blows. But Myco didn’t seem to want to give up the fight.
Third scratch! Let’s do this.” Myco sprung forward flourishing his claw and striking the chest of the Illumise knocking it off balance and sending it to it’s back on the ground with the Paras on it’s chest.
The girl looked concerned for a moment. While Illumise was in rougher shape then Paras he could still battle but another trade of blows would be its downfall. Pulling out her Pokeball she returned it. Leaving Myco with the ground pulled out from under him to fall to the dirt in surprise. He quickly scurried back and climbed up Ollie’s back to sit on his shoulder, eyeing up a chirping Atlas.
”Okay I think that was some good practice for them. Thank you. For taking it easy.” She smiled warmly at them tucking the balls into her purse.
”Same to you. It’s not all about battling. It’s important to remember the first rule of working with Pokemon is keeping their well being in mind and if we run them into the ground fighting one another are we really caring for them?” He looked down at where he had tucked Cleffa in his shirt and scratched the top of his head.

The woman was kind and gave him some things for his effort in helping her. Ollie made sure to thank her warmly and wish her well in her training of the Pokemon. He was confident that she would take good care of them. He could tell she had a good heart and that was what was most important when it came to raising Pokemon.
Now that the rain had subsided Ollie properly packed away his poncho and his hat. Leaving his still slightly damp clothes and mud washed pants. Looking at Atlas, and Myco who was allowing the Cleffa to ride atop him, he couldn’t help but smile.
”Let’s go wash up.”
The trio started down the path once more, keeping true to their northward baring. Ollie observed the aftermath of the storm as they went. A lot of the plant life had taken quite a beating and he made sure to throw any branches out of the road as they went. There were some early signs of life starting to return as he saw some Pidgey flying high overhead and could hear some krictunes chirping off somewhere distant.
He almost stepped in the puddle as he watched the bird Pokemon flying along. It was the shrill cry of Atlas that caused him to look down and see the pouting eyes of a Wishiwashi about to be stepped on.
As best as he could Ollie threw his weight to the side causing him to carry on the momentum and fall over the puddle landing face first on the ground ahead. He scrambled quickly to his knees and turned to check that the Wishiwashi wasn’t hurt in the process. ”Are you okay!” His voice was high with concern and honestly probably startled the poor Pokemon more than anything. The shock on its face certainly communicated it as such. Thankfully though that seemed to have been most of the trauma it had taken in the exchange. But then it occurred to him, that this WIshiwashi would in no natural occurrence be in a deep puddle that seemed to have accumulated in the storm.
”Hey, this isn’t where you belong is it? That storm must have done you a doozy.” He looked up at the sky, still partially cloudy, and wondered what could have brough the Pokemon there. Maybe it slipped from the beak of a wingull or got caught up in a gust. There didn’t seem like any extensive flooding from the storm but he was sure that it was a sitting duck out here in the puddle and the more that sun shone through the clouds the more this fish was heading towards a world of hurt.
Ollie sat up and pulled off his pack, unhooking the wide mouthed bottle of water that he kept on him. Hydration is important. Thankfully he wasn’t one to prefer cold water so he held out the open mouth of the bottle to the little Pokemon.
”What do you say I give you a ride to the coast. We’ll get you back home so you can get back to life.” She looked up at him questioningly for a moment and he smiled at her warmly. Looking over at the other two Pokemon as they strode up beside him then back to the bottle she hopped up into the cup and popped her head back out the rim of the cup.
”Just hang tight we’ll have you home in a jiff.” He held the bottle, cap hanging by a string and lifted up Atlas as Myco climbed up his leg. Making sure to keep a brisk pace they moved up the path until they found a river, there were several that ran this route so it wasn’t hard to find, and walked along the banks to the estuary.
Telling Myco and Atlas to stay at the shore he waded out into the water. Ollie left cloud of dirt in the water in his wake and once they were out deep enough he submerged the bottle and let the Pokemon free. The Wishiwashi popped up once more with a look on her face Ollie was pretty sure was happiness.
”Take care little one. Maybe dive a little deeper in a storm huh?” He laughed heartily and she dove beneath the water once more and disappeared into the ocean. Ollie watched after her for a moment before wading back up into the fresh water. He took a moment to clean out his bottle and refill it before putting the cap, with a handy filter built in, back in place. He made his way back to shore and looked at the two Pokemon waiting patiently for him with a smile.
