Juni wandered around the ballroom semi-lost. There was something strange about the atmosphere here, and her head was feeling a little weird. If she didn’t know any better (and if she hadn’t tested it for herself), she would have guessed someone spiked the punch. Still, she found herself coming through a series of doors and finding herself at the start of the maze. Oh, that was where she was. Her head felt a little clearer now actually too.
Dressed in her incomplete Growlithe onsie (whose bottom had mysteriously been cut off leaving something akin to a hoodie with ears instead and a pair of jeans visible of course), Juni stared up at the entrance to the maze. The rounded tiger ears on the top of her head were folded back from the small tip of her jawline and threatened to fall off the higher up she looked. Still, it worked for her red hair that poked out from it. A sound had her jolting and turning around to see someone else there. “Oh… hello…” she adjusted her glasses out of habit. “Are you starting the maze?”
Still not sure what convinced her to come to this party, Soph was a bit... lost. Thankfully Dacus was still with her rather than running off to cause trouble. The little Bunnelby was dressed in a tiny flannel shirt and had a little tan messenger back. Meanwhile, Soph had really not wanted to dress up and had bought a set of Mightyena ears and tail. She was in all black too: black jeans, black boots, black long-sleeve shirt. She'd even gone the extra mile to get a Mightyena-themed mask. It was the flimsy plastic kind, but she didn't expect to impress anyone anyway.
Coming into this area to get away from the noise, she was startled to hear another voice. Looking up at Juni, Soph placed a hand to her chest and relaxed a little. "O-oh, I..." The maze? She looked around the room and to the hallway before taking a deep breath. "I... I guess so," she finally decided. Why not? Leaning down, she scooped up Dacus so he wouldn't get lost and then she gave an affirmative nod to Juni, ready to head in.
You enter a room more brightly lit than the others. It looks like a child's room, and a soft melody plays. There are 3 creepy dolls sitting on a shelf in the middle of the room, with a box of doll clothes beneath them. The clothing options are: Doctor, Princess, Cowgirl, Ballerina, Unicorn Onesie, Superheroine, Fairy. A sign beneath the dolls reads: "Dress me!" Each doll has a riddle attached.
Doll 1: Whimsy and wonder lie deep in her heart, and no untruths will she impart. Be careful, though, to listen well, for danger comes in an honest shell.
Doll 2: To care for all of those in need, to do what she must she has agreed. Though it may hurt, it's necessary. Trust her, her smarts are legendary.
Doll 3: Across the plains and fields of green, she surely is a tough lil bean. With PokePartners she takes the lead, whether the 'mon are worker or steed.
Special note: Staff characters must roll a special die and get 30 or higher for their character to figure out the puzzle, since they know the answer.
Juni gave a couple of small nods in response. “Ok, cool….” if she had been thinking, she might have made note of the fluffiness of the Mightyena outfit or something similar but her mind had miraculously gone blank. Instead, she turned and pushed open the first door into this maze.
As she entered, Juniper immediately tensed. The unexpected amount of light was enough to leave her standing and blinking a couple of times uneasily, and even as her eyes adjusted, it took some time to… actually process what she was looking at. A…. a doll set? Slowly walking over and reading the sign carefully, Juni looked back to the Mightyena and then forward again.
“A riddle…” Juni realized dumbly after another moment. The second one was a doctor, she’d guess. The third had to be a cowgirl. Pulling the doctor costume and setting it on the second one and then setting the cowgirl cloth on the second one, she studied the first one again. “What the heck is the first one though??” she asked rubbing her fingers through her hair before looking sideways at the Mightyena again. “Any ideas?” She felt like this was going to be very simple but her brain just… didn’t entirely want to work.
Soph followed after the red-haired woman and gave a little smile to her Pokemon companion. They made their way into a room and the blackhaired woman squinted at the brighter light in the room. A shiver ran up her spine at the music and the overall appearance of the room with the dolls off to one side and she froze just inside the doorway for a moment. The Growlith-clad individual didn't seem as concerned and soon enough, Soph was scurrying to catch up with her as she observed the riddles and went about solving two of them.
Then Soph was being questioned about whether she knew the answer and she looked like a Deerling in headlights a moment. Dacus patted her on the head with an ear which brought her to and she blinked repeatedly, shaking her head. This was no time to let fear or anxiety or... or anything make her useless. Taking a deep breath, she re-read the first one and then the other two quickly. She definitely agreed with Juni's assessment on those and then looked very thoughtful.
"Hmmm... 'No untruths,'" she repeated thoughtfully and then looked at the possible outfits. "Oh! Wait, maybe...?" She grabbed the fairy costume and copied what Juni had done: set the clothes on the doll. Glancing over at the other woman made her realize it was probably kind to explain. "Um... I... I r-read a lot. Fantasy, even. So, uh... Old school or, rather, um, original tellings of stories including fairies--or fae--explain that... they can't lie. Um... They can... bend the truth, but..." She trailed off, leaving her thoughts unspoken.
You hear a sound of slightly creepy but happy laughter before the door slides open. Congratulations! Onto the next room!
You have entered the room.
What will you do?
You enter a room which at first appears eerily empty save for an ornate coffin lying in its center. You hear a faint sound from above, and realize the ceiling is littered with sleeping, hanging Golbat. There are three small puzzles attached to the coffin. Make a Dexterity roll so see if you can successfully align all the proper pieces. You only need to solve as many puzzles as there are players.
Juni’s brain was spinning its wheels over and over again as she tried to determine what the last was. Nothing was coming to until the Mightyena spoke up. “Huh?” Juni blinked as the fairy clothing was chosen. Her brow then furrowed as she tried to piece together how that worked. “O-Oh?” Well, there was an explanation, but Juni didn’t really follow. She really didn’t know much about faeries aside from the Fairy Type and even that was limited.
She didn’t have much time to ponder that, though, as a creepy laugh had her tensing some. Her eyes pulled back, and sure enough the other door was open. “Looks like we were right,” she breathed slowly smiling after. Since when did she have any right to feel so relieved regarding this anyways? Heh. Maybe it was just a trick of the ghosts in this place. Cough, onwards.
Walking into the next room, Juni wouldn’t notice the bats immediately. She walked over to the coffin and stared down at the next puzzle…. At least until a sound had her looking up and— Juni slapped a hand over her mouth. Don’t scream don’t scream don’t scream… Her eyes flashed down to the Mightyena again practically begging for assistance somehow.
Soph felt a little bit of pride as it turned out they were right, but the laugh caused her to flinch a little and the good feeling was gone. She scurried out of the room and into the next and regretted it immediately. A coffin? Oh, Arceus, this was a mess. Why was she here? She looked away from the creepy container and noticed the bats overhead long before Juni did. Pokemon, she could deal with...
As they stepped forward--Soph more reluctantly than her companion--she took a deep breath. When one of the bats shifted and drew Juni's attention, the black-haired woman was actually surprised to find that the other person was afraid of the bats. Lifting a hand, she gently set her finger over her lips, indicating that Juni should just remain quiet. Then she calmly pointed back to the puzzle, hoping it would distract her and they could get out of there sooner and not have to worry about the creatures overhead much longer.
Unfortunately for her, Juni was not really able to help much and that left Soph kind of mentally tripping over herself as she felt she should be helping more to help the other woman, but she was trying to get them out of the room quicker. As a result, she wasn't very good with the puzzles...
The puzzle clicks into a decent-looking place and opens up, revealing a Rawst Berry and an Aspear Berry inside. Onto the next room!
Congratulations! You both make it to the next room!
You have entered the room.
What will you do?
You enter a room littered with pumpkins! Small, medium, and large pumpkins cover the floor, without leaving a clear walkway. Several Pumpkaboo watch from the sidelines. Make 3 Dexterity rolls to see if you can navigate through the pumpkins without tripping on the vines and squishing any. The Pumpkaboo will probably forgive you if you can't make it completely, but still be careful.
Juniper was… much much much more afraid of the human-sized bats whose fangs were probably half her arm if bothered to measure next to than the coffin itself. Her heart thudded in her ears as she did her best to both be calm and be quiet. She nodded once at the Mightyena, and her lips sealed a little harder than before. Her eyes dropped down again to the puzzle and…. ok. Ok, she could do this. She could… quite possibly do this. Surprisingly, she actually could? As the berries were revealed, she looked up to the Mightyena and managed the most awkward smile she’d had in a while. Ok, ok, they just had to get to the next room.
As the next door clicked open, Juni made a hand gesture before rather quickly standing up, eyeing the bats one more time, and walking a little quieter towards the next door. Ok, ok, just don’t anger the bats. Ok.
Stepping through into the next room, Juni sighed deeply clutching her still pounding chest. “Arceus….” she breathed before slowly straightening again. “O-oh….” Her eyes flicked from one pumpkin to the next before looking back at the Mightyena again. “They’re…. so cute….” she almost didn’t even want to walk through them at all but… they kind of had to, yeah? Slowly stepping forward, she started to move forward.
With a sigh of relief, Soph headed after her maze partner and into the next room. Taking a deep breath, she looked around the new room and then looked over to Juni when she spoke. With a smile, Soph nodded. "They... they are, very cute. As she watched the Growlithe-clad move through the pumpkins, she'd try to follow the same path so she would hopefully not squish any of the pumpkins. At least this one didn't require as much thinking. The last two puzzles were still buzzing around in her head, especially with the stress of the last room. Berries were good, though! She was glad to have gotten those.
The Pumpkaboo are thrilled you didn't squish any of their friends! They're so happy they give you 5 Rare Candies! Your bag has been updated. Onto the next room!
You carefully step around the small pumpkins, then... whoops! Trip on a vine, slip on a medium one, go flying, and splat right on top of a big one! As you pick yourself off the ground, you see the Pumpkaboo glaring at you. They are pretty annoyed, but they forgive you... barely. You're not getting any reward though. Oh well! Onto the next room!
Congratulations! You both make it to the next room!
You have entered the room.
What will you do?
You enter a room with walls lined with shelves containing all sorts of spooky oddities. To one side is a bubbling cauldron watched over by a Mismagius, and next to it a wrack of ingredients with a sign: "Complete the brew." Use the big wooden spoon to stir in ingredients, making a Cooking roll! All players work on it together.
Oh, this wasn’t too bad actually? Juni found herself moving readily through the room. The sound of something behind her, though, had her straightening and turning back. “Are you ok??” she asked the Mighteyna only to wince on seeing what actually happened. Yikes. Her gaze flashed to the Pumkaboo, but thankfully they didn’t seem…. as upset as they could be. Juni shifted around the pumpkins and tried to help the Mightyena up again before moving on again. Getting to the Pumpkaboo themselves, she was surprised to receive so much candy but thanked them all briefly before heading to the next room.
The next was…. a room that had a strange smell to it. Juni wasn’t sure what it was, only that it was most definitely coming from the brew before them. Looking up at the rack, she hesitated before looking back at the Mightyena. “Full disclosure? I’ve never cooked a day in my life,” she stated hesitantly hoping that was not the case for her partner here. She’d try and help out but… you know.
She'd been doing so well and then... she was covered in pumpkin guts. Red-faced, Soph righted herself and glanced at the Pumpkaboo. They weren't happy and she hung her head, scurrying out of the room since they seemed to be letting her pass. "Y-yeah, I'm... I'm all--okay. I'm good," she answered as she wiped away some of the seeds and pumpkin strings. Oh, man...
Upon entering the new room, she glanced around and took a deep breath. As the Growlithe mentioned that she wasn't a cook, Soph gave a sheepish smile. "That's... okay. I'm... well, at least I think I'm... okay at cooking." She gave a small nod and went about trying to determine the best ingredients to add to the cauldron.
The Mismagius seems pleased with the brew! She takes a taste, then gathers 4 Rare Candies each from one of her shelves to give you. Your bags have been updated! Onto the next room!
Congratulations! You both make it to the next room!
You have entered the room.
What will you do?
You enter a room that seems to have only a pit between you and the door on the other side. The backlit plaque at the front reads: "Have faith… and careful footing."
If you step out or carefully test it, you will find the entire thing solid, just invisible, against the door side of the pit, but only for a few feet. After that, it changes into a more narrow winding path. Make 3 Dexterity rolls.
Oh, that wasn’t… that wasn’t too bad actually. Thank goodness. Juni smiled a little sideways at the Mightyena before nodding once to the Mismagius. “On to the next room…” Whatever was there.
And what was there was a pit. “Are you kidding me?” Juni breathed just barely audible right then. Color had come to her features as looked from where they were standing out to the other side and then back again. Faith and careful footing. Faith and careful footing her ass. No wait that actually didn’t sound right. Shut up. Juniper gulped as she slowly bent down to the ledge and then carefully reached out.
“Oh… wait….it’s… it’s solid,” she commented looking back. “Maybe we can actually like… crawl across….” That way if there was any missing space, they would surely find it, right? Better to be on hands and knees in this case, right? Right?
That was great! Soph was happy to have helped the Mismagius and grateful for the reward. As they headed out of that room, she was feeling pretty good about herself. And then it was gone. She couldn't even manage not to trip over pumpkins and they were supposed to somehow make it across some... cavern?!
As Juni discovered that it was actually solid, just invisible, that just made it worse. Feeling a little panicked, Soph began to breath a little heavier and quicker, just short of hyperventilating. "C-crawl? I... I d-don't know if... C-can we r-r-really?" Still nervous, but not wanting to hold Juni back, she'd move forward and try to get on her hands and knees with her Bunnebly on her back. Surely they could manage this... right?
You manage to make it across the path to the other side of the room, and the door opens! Onto the next room!
Congratulations! You both make it to the sixth room!
You have entered the room.
What will you do?
You enter a room that looks bigger than it should. In front of you is a pit you cannot see the bottom of. Jutting up from the pit are stone pillars arranged in a 4x4 grid, with just enough space between them that it's possible to fall, but even a clumsy person should be able to jump between them with enough ease.
The tops of the pillars seem to have one glowing button each, and are engraved with images. The row of 4 on the far left side of the room depicts witch hats. The mid-left 4 depict moons. The mid-right 4 depict bats. The far right 4 depict pumpkins. At the front of the room is a backlit plaque with four pictures: A leaf, a wolf, an open set of fangs, and a broom, in that order.
Special note: Staff characters must roll a special die and get 30 or higher for their character to figure out the puzzle, since they know the answer.
Juni glanced to the Mightyena and then back at the… well this was probably glass of some sort but yeah... glass. Could they really? “Unless you want to jump…” Juni tried and failed to force a weak laugh from herself. Slowly sinking to her hands and knees, she started across feeling over each area slowly shakily, uncertainly. There were a few spots she found that were absolutely missing, and she was quick to alert the Mightyena to them before moving onwards again.
At one point, her hand slipped, and she squeaked nearly falling off into the abyss had it not been for a well-timed grab from behind. A shriek left her lips, anyways, and it was only after she was surely back on solid glass again that she did speak. “Oh thank Groudon…” she looked back again and smiled weakly— considerably paler than she had been. “Thanks…” Now if her heart could chill out that’d be great.
As they finally came to the end and through the door, Juni slowly forced herself to standing again. Dusting herself off, she looked back for a moment before grabbing hold of the door. “Yikes.” Was all she had to say back at the room before disappearing into the next one.
…And more pits. “Are you kidding me? Do I look like Indiana Jones???” she asked no one in particular. At least these had stone pillars that looked kind of jumpable?? But still??? “There better not be snakes.” Her eyes flicked from one pillar to the next before finally catching sight of the engraving. Hats… moons…. Bats and pumpkins. Juni squinted before looking to the blacklit picture further off. A leaf, a wolf, fangs, and a broom. “Uh….leaf would be pumpkins or fall…. A wolf has to be moons because werewolves… fangs are bats—“ She paused and shivered on remembering the Golbats from the previous room. “That leaves the broom with the witch’s hat, yeah?” Now how to actually… get over there… or uh…. uhmph.
It was pure instinct that had Soph reach out to grab the falling woman and another instinct to immediately apologize. How could she have touched this person without consent? Oh, no, she was going to be mad! Oh... well... right, not so much since... falling would have been far worse, right? She nodded her head and smiled at the thanks for the help and followed after. Once they'd made it through the door, Soph used the wall to stand up, a little shaky still. "That was... oh my Uxie," she breathed. Scary, crazy, unnerving, plus so many other words that escaped her at the moment.
Upon entering the next room, she looked over everything, but at the mention of snakes, she tried to peer between the posts to see if there was, indeed, any serpentine or possibly insectile Pokemon. She didn't... see any. Looking up as Juni spoke of what her thoughts on the answer to this puzzle was, Soph took a deep breath and nodded. "I... agree. Pumpkin, leaf. Moon, wolf. Bat, fangs. Witch hat, broom." Once she'd said it and her maze partner was a little hesitant, she decided that she'd make herself useful and head out onto the pillars to press the buttons in the appropriate order.
Fourth (bottom) column of the witch's hats. The second from the top in the moon's row. Third from the top in the bat row. And finally the top or first light for the pumpkins.
