Riding a Steelix was not as easy as some made it look.
And Senara was learning this the hard way.
Shortly after leaving Birch to head towards Ivy Town and beyond, she had decided to try and ride her recently caught Steelix, Chanceux. He was a friendly beast so far; a little bit on the lazier side than she'd been expecting, but still quite good-natured compared to some other Pokemon she' caught recently--Reine was still so mad at her that she'd had to swap the two around just to get that glaring guinea pig off the squad. Dumb Nidoran. Anyway. She'd let him loose from his Pokeball and climbed onto his back using the outcroppings of steel on his body as steps and handles, positioning herself carefully so her bag as between them both to not go flying off and to act as something of a cushion. It hadn't been too bad for a while when Chanceux was going slowly for her sake...
...but she'd made the mistake of telling him to dive into the ground to go faster. Because hey, that one guy she'd met that one time seemed to handle it just fine. She could, too.
Nope.
Even with a mining helmet and even with goggles, the ride underground had not been a fun one. Because Chanceux had been digging the tunnels himself she'd been tucked so tight to his back just to avoid getting knocked about by any debris that went flying her way. It still happened though, and if she hadn't had her helmet she was sure she'd have some manner of bruises forming on her scalp. At least she wasn't the type to worry about her clothes getting dirty--in caves and caverns that happened a lot! It was just a lot less hectic and terrifying when you were watching the Steelix and Onix digging out the tunnels from a distance and walking them afterwards, rather than being on their damn back during the digging process. Uuugh, she thought she was going to be sick.
When she finally couldn't take it any more she shouted through the rubble for Chanceux to resurface, pushing out from the ground and cresting through the earth besides route one like some weird land-whale. Senara practically dropped off of his back in a heap, bits of dirt in her brightly colored hair and smudges and scrapes on her knuckles where she'd been holding onto Chanceux's "spikes" for dear life. Alright. So. First time riding.
Not as easy as it had looked. Damn that man Marley, making it out to be a piece of cake! Well! I'm sorry that some of us have smaller Steelix than yours that don't quite have the right bumps in the right places for riding easily! Go stick your face in a tunnel! FWEH!
...but it was still sooooo much faster than walking. She was practically half-way there already! But she would NOT be going underground again. Nope. He could slither on the land for a little while instead...after she caught her breath. Arceus ci-dessus.
@anyone Interested! WC: 515 I can help cut your travel time in half, too! Just don't get motion sickness on him. :3
Okay, so it was finally time for Greer to get off his butt and out into the wilds. He had, of course, gone out on a route to get his Litwick but that was it and it was a rather quick trip. Kenrick was actually pretty easy to get along with and didn't mind joining up with the fluid one. In fact, the orange-flamed Litwick was traveling with him. That is, until they came across someone else.
Greer had noticed the stature of the Steelix from a ways off and would probably have thought it was a random building if he hadn't seen it moving. So they approached and he squinted up at the steel snake before finally convincing himself he had, indeed, seen someone on its back. "Uh, hello? This is... a really big Pokemon you've got here." Maybe he was... a little biased, though, since his tallest Pokemon was three feet tall. They still hadn't really caught up, per se, but he was loud enough that Senara might be able to hear, but at least the Steelix himself would probably be able to hear him.
Senara heard somebody from a little ways off, calling out to comment on the size of her Steelix. Hah, the last person who had commented on her Pokemon's size had been focused on how small they were. So that's what that feels like. She turned toward the direction of the voice to find a person with the brightest head of hair (after her own bright pink one, naturally) she'd seen approaching, lead by a ball of floating red light. Genuine confusion clouded her features for a moment. What kind of Pokemon was that? It was too tiny to be a Volbeat or Illumise but it was glowing in a similar manner to them, with a slightly similar color...unless it was a shiny Pokemon? She took a step closer to the path to intercept them to get a better look, putting her most polite smile on her face.
Chaceux stayed closer to the side, looming over the two of them while trying not to look too ominous. It was kind of tricky when one, you know, loomed.
"Why thank you! He's actually on the smaller size for a Steelix, believe it or not," she giggled behind her scraped knuckles, "Not that that matters much relatively, now does it?" Chanceux seemed entirely unbothered by this statement of fact. He didn't mind his size. It made it all the easier to curl up inside and sleep. Now that they were closer she could get a better look at the little bulb of light, only to find a small candle-esque shape.
She gasped softly and leaned inward towards the Litwick, addressing it more directly than its trainer for a moment. "That...what a fascinating color you have! I've never seen a Litwick with this coloration before!" Senara turned her attention back to the person the Litwick presumably belonged to. "Did you catch it locally? I wasn't aware that Litwick had a regional variation in Arciel! I've seen Pidgey with unique coloration, too, but those were darker, almost black, like Murkrow...your colors are even brighter than a shiny...!"
The tip of Chanceux's tail gently touched the middle of her back, snapping her out of her rambling for long enough to realize she had, indeed, been rattling in the first place.
Oops.
Senara stepped back and her mouth snapped shut for a second, turning into a more sheepish smile. "Ah...je suis désolé. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to get in his face like that."
"Oh really?" Greer gave another look up to the iron snake and looked impressed, nodding his head and shrugging. "Much bigger than any Pokemon I have," he laughed. He actually made a note to himself that smaller Pokemon were probably better for him. Of course, the larger size meant an easier and quicker travel, but then he actually would feel a little bad for not being able to have them out when he went back to towns. Not that he always had every Pokemon out, obviously, but it was just an impossibility. Especially if he didn't want to attract attention which there were times he didn't.
As the girl found a huge interest in Kenrick, the Litwick just blinked at her in surprise at the closeness but didn't really budge. Greer just chuckled. "I'd never seen one like him before, either. Well, to be honest, I hadn't really seen one in person at all... I don't think?" He looked thoughtful and then shook his head, deciding that he couldn't remember a time he'd met one before. "Either way, I still haven't seen any others like him. This region is something else." The talk of a black Pidgey was pretty interesting... almost made him want to go looking for one.
A grin lit up his face as she apologized and he shook his head. "He's really laid back. I can understand the reaction as I think he can too." Kenrick made a noise akin to warbling or quiet ghostly wailing and hovered a little closer to her again to show that it was fine! He wasn't insulted or anything. "I call him Kenrick. He calls me 'Ooowowwwo' or... something like that, anyway, but you can call me Greer!"
"It really is, that's for sure. Still takes me by surprise..." Senara placed her hand over her lips and chuckled behind it, putting more polite distance between the two of them. It didn't last as the little ghost came right up to her again and she smiled stronger, extending a single finger for the Litwick to shake. Greer and Kenrick. "Pleasure to meet you both. My name is Senara," she tilted her head at the Litwick, "Though I suppose I will be called something else by you, now won't I? And this is Chanceux." The Steelix towering over them gave a soft growl in greeting. For his size, he was so soft-spoken.
An odd trait for a great, powerful being such as himself.
She raised up an arm for him to "rest" his chin again, though he put none of his actual weight onto her. She "pulled" him in and scratched gently as his metallic flesh. "It's a little late for a stroll--are you on your way to Cedar Town? Do you want a ride there? I'm admittedly a bit new to using a riding Pokemon but he can keep to a steady pace for our sake...and to above-ground, d'accord, chérie?" He rumbled again. "Bon garçon."
Greer's face scrunched up in amusement as he grinned at the almost snuggly interaction between the relatively small woman and the Steelix. Too cute, honestly. "Do either of you mind if I give Chanceux a scritch too?" He wondered how close Steelix skin felt to Aron skin. They were both metal, but there were plenty of different textures of fur, right? Had to be true for steel types' flesh. If he got the go-ahead, he'd rub the snout of the Pokemon and then give tiny scratching motions to the same spot. (In his opinion, Aron skin seemed somewhat... smoother, maybe? Or just softer, he couldn't really tell.)
"Hmm," he considered her initial question and then laughed a little. "I didn't really have a plan, if I'm being honest. I'm just weird and sometimes like to be out at odd hours." Looking up at Chanceux, he looked intrigued and a little surprised. "As long as you're sure, that would be great! Sounds like a lot of fun, actually." Riding a Pokemon? Wow, just wow! He couldn't even imagine it accurately. Although he did notice, kind of in passing, that she seemed a little banged up but you had to get used to these things somehow, right? Also, he didn't understand a lick of Kalosian, but he didn't figure it mattered much at the moment.
To Greer's question she shook her head, indicating that she didn't mind. Chanceux was pleased to be pet either way and did the same fake-leaning into the person's hand that he did with his trainer, a growl--too deep to be a purr, but still quite happy--rumbling from deep in his throat. Senara giggled again. They were so gentle, which was a little strange; from what she saw a lot of people believed Steel types to be, well, steel, and not soft at all. While they weren't quite soft Chanceux still felt alive rather than a giant piece of metal. "I think he likes you. Do you have a Steel type of your own, Greer? You seem to know your way around petting one." This topic was pleasant enough to get an actual smile from her. Hah, between the beautifully unique Litwick and their treatment of her darling Steelix she was starting to enjoy this little meeting. That was new.
The peace wouldn't last too long, though. Not too far from them near the sand and sea, there was a faint bubbling beneath the water's surface that caught her attention. Not a moment later there was a hiss that cut through the bubbling, and a quite large, quite sharp Cloyster floated up from the nearly black water. It grinned down at the quartet on the path and shook its shell at them menacingly. Senara quirked a brow upwards.
Cloyster, huh...I'm not in any need of more Water types, or Ice types, not with that egg I have in my PC. They have incredibly high defense though. Not bad, not too bad at all.
Senara grinned. "Hope you don't mind a small delay on that ride, but I think we're being challenged. Chanceux, Thunder Fang. Try to paralyze it for capture."
Chanceux's rumbling turned into a roar, the edges of his teeth starting to glow and spark with electricity. The Cloyster was just slightly faster than its opponent though; from the horn on its head shot a trio of spears of solid ice. Two of them struck Chanceux dead-on in the "torso" but shattered on impact, leaving hints of harm in their wake, but the third went too wide as Chanceux took the chance to dive in close, mouth opening to bring its teeth down over the shell of the Cloyster. It shut its shell tight, deflecting most of the physical harm, but little bursts of lightning went over its skin. The paralyze had worked.
"It's a shame I didn't find you as a Shellder; I have a water stone in need of use," Senara taunted lightly, producing a normal pokeball from her purse and bouncing it in her hand, "Alas, you'll just have to come as you are. Gyro Ball, Chanceux! Then stand back!"
The Cloyster was stalled by its paralysis just long enough for the Steelix to begin to spin--round and round like a drill rather than in a ball like, well, the name of the move would suggest--and charge forward. The strength of the hit and how large he was was enough to knock the Cloyster into the sand from the air, its smug grin replaced with a grimace.
Senara then tossed out the pokeball in its direction in an attempt to catch it.
"Yeah! I have an Aron. She's fun," he expressed with a grin. He really did love the less-conventional types. The ones that weren't all fluffy and cute. The ones that made people wonder how to properly take care of them. Those were the most fun to raise, in Greer's opinion. That certainly wasn't to say he didn't like cute or fluffy or "easy", of course. Still, as the Cloyster made itself known, Greer gave a nod and stepped off to the side. He watched a little bit of the fight before he glanced off to the side and noticed something in the sand.
The Pyukumuku shuffled, trying to bury himself a bit in the sand to avoid detection, but he'd already been seen. Greer glanced at Kenrick and gave a shrug before pulling out a different Pokeball and releasing Rabbie, his Cherubi. "Go ahead and Tackle," he instructed him. The grass-type followed instructions, hurrying forward to smash into the Pyukumuku. His reaction was to hunker down and use Bide. Greer watched, a little concerned, and instructed Rab to use Sweet Scent. At least this way there wasn't be as much damage coming back at them.
It was a bit of a difficult fight, mostly because there was remarkably little happening. Greer allowed two Tackles on the Biding Pokemon, followed by a Morning Sun so Rabbie was safe. But then the Pyukumuku used Taunt so he couldn't avoid having his Cherubi attack for a few turns. Well, Greer figured he may as well capture the creature after a couple more Tackles from Rabbie. So he pulled out a Pokeball and tossed it at the wild Pokemon.
"A Galekid! Aw, how precious! I'd love the chance to meet her, once we've reach town?" She giggled, fingers steepling just under her chin, "If you don't mind, of course!"
Senara strolled down to the beach to collect the closed pokeball, scan it with her 'dex, and send it off to the PC box where it would likely stay for a while. She didn't have any immediate use for a Cloyster but, hey, maybe if she needed and Ice type for something. She then paused to watch the intense battle between a small squishy sea urchin and a sentient fruit. Huh. Pyukumuku up this far north? Weren't they a more tropical species? Shows what she gets for not paying too much attention during biology. Geology, baby.
"Good catch," she chimed as she made her way back up to the path. She gave a fond scratch to Chanceux's middle and murmured Kalosian praises to him. Such a good boy. "Can't say I've seen one of those in such cold weather, but they aren't the smartest of creatures are they. I think I'll name that darling Cloyster something like...Perle?" It was a bad joke, but then again a lot of her names were pretty bad jokes to somebody who spoke Kalosian, or even sometimes to those who didn't. Chanceux rolled his eyes and grunted at that one. "Hah, everybody's a critic. Have you got a name for yours?"
She waved a hand up to her Steelix for him to lay down and lie still, then moved to position herself on the stone behind his head, legs draped over two of the larger out-cropping's of stone while her hands used his "ears" as handles. "With that excitement done, all aboard? Pick a comfortable rock to sit on, I'll make sure he goes slowly."
"Sure, of course! She loves meeting new people," Greer agreed with a smile. It was nice to be able to connect based on Pokemon. Going to get his own new Pokemon at the same time as Senara, he wondered about the Pokemon they'd caught. Unlike her, though, he decided to keep his with him to finish out his six member party and came back to stand nearby as she started talking.
"I'm honestly not sure what I'm going to do with a Pokemon like this," he admitted with a short laugh. "But thanks. Cloyster was a good catch too." Unfortunately, he knew zero Kalosian so he didn't get the pun, but smirked at the interaction between trainer and Pokemon. Considering her question, he hummed to himself and decided, "Keir." Greer had chosen his own name later in life and during all his research, he came to have a weird sort of love for Scottish names so he tried to name his Pokemon with that in mind.
Once Chanceux was in position to be boarded, Greer got a little excited. This seemed like it would be so much fun and getting the opportunity was just awesome. He took a moment to grab Rabbie and decided he'd let the little grass-type join him outside the Pokeball for a bit. Climbing aboard somewhere toward the middle, he tried to make sure he could grab hold of at least one of the spikes and settled the Cherubi between his legs to give some support. "Ready when you are!" Greer grinned like a kid, shifting excitedly as they all got prepared to travel.
Chanceux wriggled ever so slightly at the addition of another rider on his back. At his weight and density it was hardly uncomfortable, it just meant he needed to be cautions with how he moved as to not knock them off. Slowly the great metal serpent began to move, keeping the parts of its body with people on it slightly elevated while the rest of him carved through the dirt at a fairly brisk pace--faster than walking, definitely, bur nor the same speed he had reached whilst underground. And much less damaging to them.
Senara glanced back at the little Cherubi with a sweet smile. What a cutie-pie.
"Next stop, Cedar Town! Please keep all arms, legs, and small plants inside the vehicle at all times," she snickered and turned to face forward again. Chanceux rolled his eyes.
Greer Genji WC: 162 Another roll, or call it here? Do you need more to clear Route 1?
This makes 6/8 so let's do another call and we should be good after that!
༄
Off they went and Greer was amazed by how smooth the Steelix was actually moving. Not that he expected them to be too heavy, but because he imagined it was awkward to move with extra to worry about. Not knocking them off, for instance, which Chanceux was being so careful of. Plus, the serpentine body probably was a bit difficult to maneuver in a way where their legs didn't risk scraping against the ground or something.
Rabbie settled in, seeming pleased with the whole situation and giving a smile back to Senara. The Cherubi was happy to get such a smile and made a point to keep a lookout for the group as much as possible. Of course, this was mildly difficult since he was the smallest of all of them. Still, he wanted to help! He wanted to remain liked, after all.
The four of them--two humans and two Pokemon of very different proportions--continued to roll their way along the river-side with ease. Senara hummed a little to herself, now and then scratching somewhere on Chanceux's head to get a pleased rumble from him. It didn't feel like she needed to keep a conversation up at the moment. She was giving a ride to somebody who'd been fairly pleasant to talk to, and who had an Aron she'd quite like to meet, so the silence didn't feel uncomfortable for a little while. Their travelling didn't seem to be going unnoticed though. Glancing to her side, Senara spotted a trio of Water Pokemon had begun "racing" Chanceux--a Staryu, a Qwilfish, and a Lapras!
"Aww, look, you have a gaggle, Chanceux!" She giggled, pointing over the edge of her mount towards the water to draw Greer's attention as well. "They look friendly--but I'm good on Water Pokemon for a while," she snorted, "My last, what, four catches have all been Water? Not even all on this route! Do you want to stop and catch any of them?"
An amusing thought curled her lips into a slight smug smile.
"Ooor you can try to catch them without us stopping? How good's your lead-in aiming?"
But if they asked her to, she'd pull Chanceux over for Greer to catch them on their feet.
Ooh, Pokemon! Greer looked over when she gestured toward the river and he perked up at the sight of them. "Pointy boy," he expressed, eyeing the Qwilfish. Then came the challenge of catching the Pokemon without stopping and the redhead considered. Well... maybe, actually.
He smirked at Senara and took out a Pokeball, releasing the Aron he was talking about onto one of Chanceux's tail sections. "Let's get a new partner, Rhona! The spiky fish there," he explained, pointing out the Qwilfish to his Pokemon. She did a little dance in excitement and then wound herself up to aim a Mud-Slap at the wild Pokemon. He retaliated, of course, with a Water Gun and the two exchanged a few super-effective moves until the poison type began to miss thanks to the dirt causing his vision to get worse.
Pulling out a Pokeball, he watched the target as he did a little dive to try clearing his eyes. The moment he came up, Greer was prepared. Extending his arm, he threw the sphere and hit the Qwilfish dead on. He gave another smirk to Senara at this, maybe letting himself get a little overly cocky.

Greer didn't give her the call to stop, so Chanceux kept up at his steady pace, keeping up with the three water Pokemon as they went along. Senara kept herself turned to watch the long-distance exchange of blows between the most adorable little Steel-type Pokemon and the Qwilfish. She almost wanted to call the fight to scoop the little guy up and snuggle him up but, alas, she would need to wait for a more opportune moment.
Once the fist was well and truly subdued they tossed out the Pokeball and landed it in one try, and the ball came soaring back, summoned into his glove now full of Qwilfish. Senara pursed her lips together in a faint pout. While she had been ready to just get a move on, seeing Greer smirking at her after succeeding in her little challenge had her...
...well, let it never be said that Senara wasn't easily goaded into a challenge.
Snapping her hand into her pocket she pulled out a blue Pokeball lined with black netting on the lid. She reeled her arm back and tossed it overhead in the direction of the Lapras. Didn't Gabe also say he had one of them? Well. Now they'd be even!
