Marcus gathers his wits about him. After a few days settling in with his Pokemon in a hotel, it's finally time to set off on his journey. For now, he'll be sticking to the beaten track of route 7, no matter the poor pickings such a well-trodden area has for fossicking and the like. He will have time for going off the well-cut roads when he and his pokemon have a better sense of the lay of the land, and when they're a bit stronger. There's no use finding a precious gem and then dying of heatstroke three hours later because you couldn't get back to the road (he'd learnt that the hard way the first time he went out gem-hunting with his father; if his father's Skarmory hadn't been able to pull him out of that crevice, he might have been stuck there for hours or even died). He checks his backpack, making sure his new egg is well-secured in a nest of blankets and scarves where he left it, at the top of his hiking bag, then he closes the bag again, leaving the egg secures and sets out on the first steps of a great adventure.
... It is some time before he has walked all the way out of town. This will take a while, one suspects.
(Um, please forgive my lack of setup for pokemon team, I'm bad at these things. For now, my collection is small enough that the team I have with me is "all of them")
Edit: also I'm using Riolu's Inner Focus ability to attract psychic types, which I believe is possible.

As his walk is interrupted by a wild Pokemon, Marcus is eager to see his new Rowlet in action, so he directs his Riolu to stand back.
"Rowlet, Go!".
The small owl Pokemon flies up into the air, and makes a series of careful kiting shots of leaves at the Happiny. This works for a few seconds, but soon enough it finds itself outmaneuvered and as soon as the Happiny can close to melee, pounded into the ground. It's just too young, and outclassed by even this wild Pokemon. Marcus cringes at the sight. He'd really thought Rowlet was ready. "Riolu - protect her!", he orders, asking his better fighter to step in before Rowlet is too badly injured, and returning her to a pokeball at the first possible chance. From there, the fight is much more even, with the Happiny and the Riolu facing off in a short duel ending in the already-weakened happiny lying on the ground covered in bruises.
Marcus sighs as Riolu returns to his side. "I'd hoped my first Pokemon battle in this country would have gone better than that. Well. We will be better next time. Right?" His Riolu nods back at him, and they continue on their journey.
(Situation: - Riolu 4/5 energy - Rowlet 4/5 energy - Inner Focus Ability still up. - Egg 1/3 posts. - I'd assign the level-up to Rowlet by preference but will leave the decision up to a moderator)
A Poké Ball with a 50% chance of capturing a wild Pokémon, with a higher, 75% chance of catching any Pokémon that the trainer has captured before. (whoever gave the most damage gets the level)

Marcus sets to the road for another day. This time, as the wind whips his hair, it brings with it a glimpse of something left behind by a previous traveler; a pair of poke-balls. Marcus, never one to make light of a opportunity, pockets them with his other unused balls, expecting to make use of them in the future.
The road is long and the wind is high atop the ridge this path follows along. It's a nice view of the land on one side, and of the yet higher places this way will lead too, on it's way up into the pass. After a few more hours of walking, Marcus will decide to set down, moving off the ridge and making a campsite in the lee of the ridge. There, he will set a small tent and so forth in the space he has found, sheltered from the wind, and check on his Pokemon. His Riolu, who has been walking with him, is nearly as tired as he is; for all that she's smaller, she's also in better shape. His Rowlet has been resting and has recovered somewhat from it's injury, but is still quite under the weather. His egg is safe in it's nest in his pack. All is good. He sleeps, and dreams of what might be.
(No change in Pokemon status; Riolu is still using Inner Focus; Egg post 2/3. I can't honestly say that Rowlet did the majority of the damage, so Riolu gets the level)

Marcus wakes in the middle of the freezing night to find that his tent has been surrounded. Apparently, he wasn't the only one who wanted to sleep in this hollow; a Boss Tyrouge also intended to use it as a shelter, and now he was surrounded by it and it's minions.
"Oh dear. Well, we can't be having this, now can we". Once again, he sends out Rowlet. This time, the small owl Pokemon's type advantage allows it to endure several hits from the lesser Tyrogue as it kites them around the hollow the group was fighting over; a series of leafage attacks is enough to put out each of them, and they only hit it once or twice in return. It's still ultimately too injured to continue fighting when the Boss steps up and traps it between a rocky wall and it's Bullet Punch move. Marcus uses a potion to ease her pain as he sends out Riolu to replace her in the fight. This fight is much more even, with both fighting-type Pokemon trading blows. Ultimately, Riolu's focus allows it to stay in the fight through a series of dirty hits from the Tyrogue boss as it gets increasingly desperate. She endures a single final punch with elegance, and then manages to put down the boss. A few seconds after doing so, she too collapses, leaving a trashed campsite and Marcus standing nervously looking at the fainted Pokemon. Quickly he salvages what he can of his campsite, places his exhausted Pokemon into their balls, and flees, with his best appearance of being calm and in control, into the dawn. Whatever he's thinking, he does his best to put on a calm face for his Pokemon, and wonders how best to deal with the weather now that his tent has been destroyed.
(-1 potion, gives Rowlet +5 energy (10-0.2/2 = 5)) (I believe you will remove the item for being used and check my math?) (Rowlet 5/5 energy, Riolu 3/5) (Still using Inner Focus to attract Psychic types. I believe both Pokemon will gain two levels; Rowlet for winning two fights and Riolu for winning a fight against a +5 levels Pokemon)

Marcus's next day is rather unpleasant. Between the steadily declining weather and his loss of a tent, he's almost wondering if he should turn back. That seems like a bad choice, though; he's still dressed well for the weather, since he wasn't a fool when he was setting out, and he's making such good progress (and finding a few useful items here and there along the way)! He had been worried that his Pokemon would have taken their very difficult win poorly before, but in fact, they had taken the opportunity to redouble their efforts training. Riolu wasn't going to give up from a little thing like that; she had even managed to learn a new move: Metal Claw, that was superior in attack power than the ones she had learned previously, and incorporated a new type; steel. That wouldn't be useful fighting in the gym they were moving towards, but it would be when capturing rock-type Pokemon to use in that fight. And besides, Gyms were an artificial measure of your progress. Riolu was getting stronger, and that's what mattered.

Marcus's travel continues from bad to worse in the freezing weather. He still has fire-making supplies and most of his blankets, but this is not the season for wilderness travel as an untested trainer, it seems. Well, at least on his next trip he'll be better off.
At least, finally, his Riolu's focus has paid off, attracting to it a interested-seeming psychic Pokemon. He hears the chiming long before he sees the Pokemon, but a few minutes of peering around the track eventually shows up the expected Chingling, hovering slightly in a gap between several rocks. Once it's been spotted, it rushes forwards. "Hello there. You're a brave one, aren't you? Would you like to join us?". There's no point battling with a Pokemon who seems so enthusiastic, after all. Marcus will throw a pokeball.

The chingling flees from Marcus as quickly as it had approached. "Hmm. Maybe I misunderstood?" Marcus wonders. Whatever it was, there is no use in crying over split milk, is there? Marcus continues with his journey.
In time, he comes upon a place where the road crosses a river-cut canyon on a small but sturdy, showing off a spectacular display of many-colored sedimentary layers. Here, Marcus decides that he is willing to take some time off from walking ever forwards to examine the rocks and see if he could find anything useful. In particular, he notes that the bases of such cliffs often have piles of scree which contain fossils. This close to the road, they might already be picked over, but not that many people have been trained as rock-hounds and it's a little difficult to access, so he think's he's in with a chance to find one.
Getting out his explorer's kit, he takes his hard-hat and small pick, and carefully picks his ways down the slope, his Riolu effortlessly bounding down behind him. At this time of year, the creek down the base of this little valley (Only really a few meters deep, but still enough to leave a clear cut in the stone) is still going strong, it not yet being cold enough for long enough to freeze it solid - for now, it runs clear and cold. Marcus spends a happy few hours picking through the fallen rocks, cracking open likely-looking suspects with his pick, before he finds anything of note (a fine fern preserved in the sedimentary stone), but once he's confirmed to himself that he was correct in thinking this was a fossil-bearing strata, he is twice as eager to work. As the sun goes down, he finally returns to road level with his prize; a rare Armor Fossil, wondering where the day had gone.
(WC 311 words; trying for Mining +1 - the Armor Fossil I got out of the Mining minigame) (Still using Inner Focus to attract psychic-type random encounters)

The next day, Marcus is walking along the track as he has been doing for some days now (he will admit that after sleeping in it for multiple nights, his coat is looking a little worse for wear, but he expects there to be a Pokemon center ahead; he's nearly halfway there, and it would be as much trouble to return as it would to continue. Well, nearly as much; he'd be walking downhill. But nonetheless, he is confident that he can make it in a timely manner, so he pushes on.
As he walks, he encounters a small catlike Pokemon, an Espurr, presumably attracted by his Pokemon's Inner Focus as others have been. He sends out his Rowlet to battle with her, his Riolu being likely to overwhelm the weak opponent, and asks Rowlet to, with care, weaken her. The following battle is rather one-sided, involving the Rowlet using it's weakest attacks to do a minimum of harm, and taking a handful of not-particularly serious hits in the process. Eventually, Marcus judges the Espurr sufficiently weakened that he throws out a poke-ball and attempts to catch the Espurr.

Marcus had, apparently, been having quite poor luck with Pokemon over the course of this journey. Another potential teammate had fled from him. It was honestly getting a little frustrating. But Marcus would rise above it. Sooner or later, he would have an excellent team of Pokemon. Even if his two companions now were both quite new at this whole thing. So was he, for that matter. In the end, he would be vindicated.
For now, though, he continued to walk up a cold mountain, passing through dramatic views of snowy countryside as he followed the road through the high passes of this land. Soon enough, he would be elsewhere, and what a wonder that would be. Maybe it would be warmer. Marcus doubted it, though - he was leaving the coast.

Marcus was enjoying a day which was only freezing cold, rather than freezing cold and also full of wind or snow, when a strange pokemon, a Milcery, appeared. It was, according to his pokedex, of unusually large size, though it was still quite small in the grand scheme of things. Nonetheless, Marcus felt he should try and capture it.
After his Riolu had spent some time being confused and weakened by clouds of sweetly scented gas and then subsequently attacked, Marcus began to think that maybe he had underestimated this pokemon. Both pokemon were slowly worn down by this conflict until Marcus decided that he'd had enough of watching his pokemon take as many blows as it delivered, and threw a pokeball. If this couldn't catch it, he'd need to bring in his other pokemon, and he'd rather avoid that.
