Freya took in a deep inhale as she walked right by the Botanical Gardens. It was the one place that Freya would always visit as a child. At some points, it was once a day, and in others it was once a week. No matter what though, she would always go by it to observe the plants and just experience the beauty of it all coming together. Every flower, every tree, and just everything in general was so amazing. Each one complimented the other, whether it was by smell, color, or even texture. This was the true beauty of Birch, and its what made Freya come back to Birch through all her travels. Of course, the local contest that was happening was also a factor, but this might be the top one. The fact that she would be able to work on the outside gardens that day was amazing.
As she walked to the designated destination, she met a dear old friend of her parents. She was close to him, and he loved her dearly, but she was there as a worker today, which meant that he could treat her any differently than her partner on the job. After all, favoritism was not something that was taken well pretty much anywhere. So, with the debriefing of the two workers, he explained their tasks. They were to do 5 tasks, and whether they finished all 5 or not was up to them. They were to weed, water, and fertalize the plants, trim the hedges, trim the trees, and harvest the bushes/plants. Each one was grueling work, but Freya was pumped for it. So much so, that she looked over to her partner and said to him, "I can't believe we get to work in THE botanical gardens. Of course, we don't get to experience the greenhouses or butterfly gardens, but at least we still get to work on the plants! Even with the freezing whether, the plants remain strong! That's what a lot of care will do for plants as beautiful as these!" With that she smiled at him with giddy.
Sidney had to be honest with themselves: they had no farm training. They had grown up Saffron City, one of the most populated in the entire world, and the most experience they had ever garnered was keeping after their grandmother’s bonsai alive a couple of times when she was out of town. Their first experience with the concept came from games, and their second came from Gaki’s strange interest in LARPing farming. Their third experience was buying the property next to Gaki’s in Fuji Town. Sid was not delusional enough to believe that was enough to properly raise crops when the time came. The winter season offered a compromise: they could study up during this time and be ready for spring.
The Birch City gardens offered a unique situation. The plants there were well established and were going strong even in the winter. Offering to help out there was a chance to garner skills and develop more before the sole responsibility was on their shoulders. It was comforting, assuring. Even if it naturally came with a lot of work.
Standing there in a red turtle neck sweater, blue jeans, and a white coat, they were listening in to the master gardener (or whatever he was?) explain what they and their partner for the work were to do. It seemed… like a lot, but at least their partner seemed to be excited. That was infectious. A small smile curled on Sid’s lips. “Agreed,” they answered looking out along the botanical gardens. “We should get to work though. That was a lot of tasks…” Not that they didn’t believe they could both get to all of them if they really tried. Still.
Freya got her hair, and put it up into a ponytail as she was talking to the while the guy in front of her talked to Freya. She knew that she'd need to put her hair up in this style, or else it would get caught with the plants. That was an experience that Freya tried to forget. After all, it was painful for her to try and weave her hair out of their thorns and branches and such, but also it was one of her most embarrassing times. It made her feel like she wasn't worthy enough to become a botanist, or anything of that sort. Now though, it just reminded her of how much she could grow.
With her black hoodie, black jeans, and sneakers, she nodded her head towards the white haired man and said to him in confidence, "How about we go and weed the plants first. It's one of the harder tasks, but we might as well get it done with first. there's a lot of snow here. The gardeners use that snow for water in some points, so don't just throw it onto the ground. I used to spend a lot of my time here, and its glad to be back." She smiled at the plants with a bit of nostalgia in her eyes as she got to work.

Weeding first… That made sense. No need to water or fertilize the weeds, after all. Their eyes flickered over to the fresh snow that also rested in the garden boxes. They use snow for water? Hm, how economical. Their eyes flickered back to the girl again, and they have a nod back. “Alright, thank you for letting me know,” they smiled. How nice, I couldn’t have asked for a better tutorial. They filed away what had been said for later.
Red eyes flickered around again searching for— “Maybe we should get buckets first then? To put the snow and maybe even the pulled weeds in,” they started. Of course they had no idea where they would be stored in this area, but maybe this girl kn— “Ah, my name is Sidney, Sid for short, by the way,” they introduced themselves. “I don’t think I got your name.”
While the gardens seem to be littered by weeds, it seems as if someone already tilled the ground! All that's needed now is to collect the weeds and dispose of them properly. What luck!
Freya listened to her job partner's concerns, but she quickly brushed them off with a laugh. "The buckets are actually near the ends of the garden plots. I grabbed one earlier and forgot to mention it to you. I take the blame for that." With that, she looked over towards him with a guilty smile as she scratched the back of her head. Freya wasn't really the type to work with others. Most of the time, she was too anxious to even communicate properly to a person. In this moment, though, she was her happiest. She felt confident, because she was confident in what she was doing. Things like talking to strangers, and training pokemon were still new to her. So, those things could sometimes make her feel anxious. Gardening was one of the main things that allowed her to open up.
Picking up the piles of snow on the gardens, she looked to see that the weeds had already been pulled up. It just wasn't clear at the moment due to all the snow. So, she notified her partner, saying to him, "Oh hey, the ground's already tilled! That's going to make our jobs a lot easier." As she wiped her hand across her forward, she got to work on both the weeds and the snow.
Sid blinked a couple of times and then smiled as Freya spoke. Of course, someone well acquainted with this sort of thing would already have that prepared, they supposed. They would have to file that away for later, though. “Thank you for getting them,” they smiled a little at that. Though they didn’t receive her name in return, Sid supposed it didn’t really matter. There was work to be done, and they were learning to be had. That was more than enough.
Watching as the girl moved, Sid copied the motion on another box. Gently grabbing arm-fulls of snow and dumping it into the buckets they found at the end, Sid looked down at the ground there. Oh, huh, yeah this did look tilled just like in one of Gaki’s games. “Looks like we could just…” They mumbled more to themselves than to the girl as they reached down and started to pull weeds up. Yeah, they were coming up just fine. Nice. Dumping snow and weeds into the bucket, they hummed a little softly. This wasn’t too hard, but they supposed they’d have to look up a Chutube tutorial on how to till next time.
"Hey, do you know what this is?" they called, holding up what appeared to be not a weed but a mangled root from one of the plants. Had something already been through and disturbed it that badly?
Looks like someone was also meaning to gather up roots at the same time as weeding the garden for efficiency's sake. Woops! Good eye! Perhaps you'll score points with the gardener by separating the herbal roots and the weeds.
With happiness in her eyes, Freya looked down at her area to see that the same thing was happening to her as it was with Sidney. She looked over towards him, and said, "Hey, someone must've been trying to make this easier for us! That means less work for us, but we should still separate them. So, get a few more buckets for the roots!" She looked down at the plants with a bit of guilt. She knew that this was the work of uncle Jerry. He must've done these things to make it easier on his friend's child. After all, Freya's parents were friends with him since college. Just because they were away on a researching trip didn't change that.
So, as she let out a huff of frustrated air, she went back to work. She had told him not to do this sort of thing for her. She was a botanist, and a pretty skilled one at that. She didn't need his help. She had the ability to find the root of the weeds and herbs herself. Either way though, it just meant that she would take a lot less time with this job. Reaching back down into the snow, she started to pick up the weeds and roots, throwing them into the buckets that she had gotten out from the edges of the garden.
Hmmm, that was nice. Sid gave a nod as Freya spoke. This was rather easy all things considered. Hopefully they’d have enough buckets? Well, for now they’d go snag one form the other boxes to use and just wait to see if it filled entirely or not.
Sid would miss Freya’s frustration initially, but the look on her face as they came back had them frowning a little. “Is something wrong?” they asked before turning to start pushing snow and putting weeds and roots into their respective buckets. They finished up one box and then went on to the next all the same.
Absently, Sid was aware of their hands. Even with gloves, their hands were kind of getting cold and stiff, and they'd pause a couple of times to rub them together and breathe on them. Too bad I have nothing to warm them... Well, they did have a few Pokemon who might have made them warmer depending, but that would just be exposing them to the cold unnecessarily in their eyes.
The cold seeps in past the thin gardening gloves, but the work is going both smoothly and quickly. Perhaps it wouldn't be bad to take a break, warm up, maybe buy some of those heating pad things from a convenience store that you can stick in your gloves? Of course, sticking it out and just getting the work done would leave more time in your day after the job was done, so... pros and cons.
With Freya working hard on the weeds and snow, she had felt her hands starting to grow more and more cold as the time went by. Of course, the gloves were resistant to the cold, but that didn't mean too much. Resistant didn't mean it would be completely safe from the cold. Now, her hands were stuck in a capsule of cold. Though, she didn't really know whether or not she should ask her partner for a break. There was a convenience store close by that had glove warmers, but that would all depend on if Sidney wanted to go. Freya wasn't the best at making decisions. They made her anxious for some weird reason, especially when someone else was involved.
So, she said aloud, hoping that Sidney would hear her, "Hey, It's getting a bit chilly. I heard there were some heating pads at the convenience store. It would be nice, but I'd completely understand wanting to work more. After all, you might have something planned right after this. You might also want to give yourself more time to rest after you're finished. I'd completely understand either way." With that, she went back to working on the weeds, trying to finish up the last bits of them before they moved on to the next task/went on a heating pad run to the convenience store.

Ah, was that what was wrong? Very considerate, I suppose… Sid archived the thought right after to focus on the situation at hand. “….Hm…. well…” they considered slowly. “I had sort of expected to be at this all day. We have a lot of tasks to complete… and I do want to get to as many of them as I can…” It would kind of be disrespectful to ask to be able to help and then to not fulfill as much as humanly possible.
“Though actually that may be par for the course of taking a break and ensuring we stay warm…” Sid realized after the fact. I wonder how much concern I’ll have about such things in the spring… It was something they’d have to take note of later. Pushing themselves up to standing and dusting the snow off their pants and jacket, Sid turned towards Freya. “Let’s get a few warm things from the convenience store. It will keep our health status bar high as we complete other tasks.” They smiled a little at their own wording. While they were at the convenience store, they could get some hot chocolate and other warm things to keep them both going, yeah? Yeah.
Once more, Sid checked over that they had at least completed this task before looking back again. “Shall we go?”
Woops! It seems that Freya's decision to keep working that last little bit was rather detrimental. The snow had soaked through the gloves by this time which offered very little in the way of protection. In fact, she can't really feel her hands to know that she bumped into a Diglett who was none too happy to be disturbed and decided to pay her back by absolutely covering her in snow.
By working only a tiny bit longer, Freya soon felt very bad about her decision. While working, she seemed to have caused one of the pokemon, that was keeping the soil arid, to launch snow towards her. Now, instead of just her hands becoming numb, her whole body was now numb. The snow had completely drenched her clothes. As she looked over to Sidney, she said to him, "I think we're going to need more than one heating pad."
With each shiver came a new one as she and Sidney walked down to the convenience store to get some towels and those heating pads that Freya had wanted to begin with. Although she had to walk there cold and freezing, she was able to walk back warm and toasty. She wasn't too sure how long they'd be able to take a break, but she hoped that it would be long enough to where she was at least close to dry. If not, she would have to suck it up and distract herself with the job. After all, it was something she loved. That's the whole reason as to why she had picked the job in the first place. So, it most likely would distract her.

Sid had been ready to go, just waiting on the girl to finish, when a blast of snow came up from the ground??? A Diglett? Those were kind of surprising to see in such a regulated place as this, but they supposed even Pokemon like that had their place in the ground. “…Etttooo eto….” Sid reached up and ran a few fingers though their hair. “Are you ok??” Well, not quite ok, but good enough to get where they needed to go. She’d have to be.
The convenience store really wasn’t that far away, really, but the cold made it feel like forever. Stepping inside, Sid was met with a blast of warm air and a sense of immediate relief. “Ah, head to the bathroom… I’ll bring you some towels and whatever else I find…” they said before heading down an aisle or two. Coming to the bathroom, they stepped to the door and knocked before heading into the bathroom and setting a series of neat sheet type towels over the stall they thought the girl was in. “These were all I could find but there was also this…” they called tossing over a jacket as well. It was puffy and probably too big for the girl’s size and stature, but it would keep her warm more than being out in wet clothes. “If you want to toss over any of your clothes that are too wet, I can try and dry them under the hand drier…” they suggested.
As Freya wiped off a layer of snow from her body, she looked up to Sid, and said to them, "Yeah, I'm as good as I can be at least. It was my bad for forgetting to be careful with the pokemon around here. Botanical garden's like these can't be upheld by people themselves. Pokemon need to help out as well. After all, there are some things that you need to keep healthy, just like the soil. In order for the roots of plants to receive the oxygen they need, the soil has to be arid enough to let that oxygen through. That's why the diglet was going around there." With that, she frowned a tiny bit, deprecating herself for that mistake.
While in the stall, she heard the voice of Sidney as they put the towels and a jacket over the stall. The jacket was probably one of the few things that could've made this better. Oversized jackets were Freya's forte. After all, what's better for a introvert than a big jacket that they can curl up into. So, she quickly dried the top part of herself off, hoping to get on that jacket as fast as she could. She then finished up her lower half as she stepped out of the stall.
Looking towards Sidney, she said to them, "I didn't need you to dry off any of my clothes, but thanks for everything! I'm super thankful for this jacket especially. It's really nice, and I'll happily pay you back for it with some of the money I make from the job. Speaking of that, we should probably get back, shouldn't we?" With that, she waited for Sidney's response, keeping the same genuine look of joy she had on when she got out of the stall.

Ah good. Sid smiled a little as the girl stepped out of the stall dried off and ready to go again. “Welcome,” they replied briefly before nodding to the suggestion to get back to work. They still had quite a few things to get done, and while they had time, it was better to not waste it in this case.
Walking back out to the gardens with nothing else impeding them, Sid once more found the boxes and things they had been working on. Now where had they been? Ah, they had finished weeding for the most part it seemed. Right, right. “Looks like we need to start fertilizing,” they murmured softly to themselves before remembering what had been said earlier. “The fertilizer should be in the shed still, I think?” They turned back the ways towards it and was pretty sure they could see it partially open already. Starting that way, Sid came to the door and opened it. Yep, there were the bags all ready to go. Sid hesitated before bending down to lift one up.
ANbGbM5Rp_ Sid has +4 farming tl;dr for the mod: they went to the store and Freya got a jacket. Back to regularly scheduled programming.

As Freya and Sid had gotten back to the gardens, she looked to see that Sid was already getting a hang of things as they found the bag of fertilizer that was needed for their next job. Smiling at him, she said, "Hey, good job! Glad to see that you're getting a hang of the area! Well, I guess its time for us to get to work, huh? It was nice taking a break, but the day's not getting any longer." With that, she went over to the bag and picked it up, moving it to her section of the garden.
While she was there, she looked over all the plants to see which spots needed the fertilizer most, and went to work. She scooped out the mixture with a trowel, making sure to evenly spread it all over the area. She wanted to make sure that each plant could get nourished completely. There's also the fact that over saturating the plants could be bad for the plants themselves. So, she was extremely careful and meticulous in her work.
A stern groundskeeper walks by and immediately marches up to you with her hands on her hips. "You're using that fertilizer?" she asks, glaring down her nose at you two. The implication, of course, is that you were supposed to grab the other fertilizer. Or perhaps the other other.
