<Is that what they're supposed to be?> Gazouillius followed Bones' gaze towards the humans and their weird conversation as it continued outside of her span of attention. The one Bones came with was at least large--they were a better protector than hers, who was tiny and hardly able to handle themselves. They were weak enough for even her with her size to knock around. That didn't instill a lot of confidence, or respect. <Do you really think they can? There's so many bad things out there. Things that wrecked me because I'm such a weakling...> her body lowered into something like her sitting down, but her feet were still at such an angle that she could spring up at a moment's notice. <...you at least will grow into something that can protect itself. I can't.>
Coccinelle gave a brief nod and settled herself into a spot besides Lizbeth, her legs folded so the soles of her feet were touching and her knees could bounce up and down. <I will try not to! Is it better if I sit still? I am bad at sitting still. But I can try for you!>
Since nobody had been set on fire or bitten or otherwise injured, Senara relaxed just a little bit. Or did, at least, until Gabe spoke up and her cheeks went so red Amber might have gotten jealous of the color. What. WHAT?? Oh that worthless little-- "Y-You shut your stupid mouth!! Both you and her! I am NOT fat! I'm petite!! GO TO HELL!!" She wasn't usually bothered by people commenting on her size but she couldn't remember ever being called fat by anybody before. Especially not her own Pokemon. Though she doubted Coccinelle would say something as direct as that.
Oh Arceus dammit, what is that little noise-box telling him now???
Her flushed face didn't fade even when Gabe had returned, and her arms crossed tight over her chest as she glared little daggers at him over a nasty little scowl. She had half a mind to start blaring bad pop songs in her head and hope it got to him. "J'espère que vous vous étouffez avec une baie." She grumbled, loudly, before glancing at Baby Girl who was still snickering while holding her face in her claws. Without waiting for things to get perfectly into position she barked out a quick pair of commands: "Petite fille, fais peur à Chloe. Et le salaud violet. Tromper, continue à attendre ton temps."
Baby Girl, looking up from her claws, grinned wider and, in an instant, sunk into the shadows at her feet, disappearing from sight. Just before Gabe could properly stand up she suddenly shot up from the shadow between him and his Litten, and her paws came together with a very loudCLAP right between them. While it wouldn't do any damage it would still startle them. And Senara was feeling petty enough to give her friend a spook.
Serves him right for that "fat" comment. Not all of us can have overactive metabolisms!!
Bones’ ears twitched, and a small nod was given at Gazouillius’s words. That was what he thought trainers were supposed to be, anyways. At the follow up question, though, he looked sideways at her. He did have evolution before him, someday. Houndoom were powerful alpha types. It was always there, in a pinch or in a moment of personal growth, waiting to be unlocked. But that said something about him, not her. Bones’ eyes flicked forward to the humans again. <I don’t know your trainer…. But… I have never seen… him> he paused and made a head gesture towards Gabe <…as at ease around any other human as her> he answered glancing sideways at the Skarmory again. <There might be something you aren’t seeing.>
Liz, meanwhile, eyeballed Coccinelle from the side. She was so bouncy even when still, somehow. <I guess> was the answer that would be given. Her eyes fell on Gabe again who was still shooting glances at her a bit out of concern. She was fine, though, mostly. Reasonably. Reasonably fine. That was going to be the final answer....
Senara’s reaction to Gabe earned a sudden sharp laugh from the latter. Oh, he didn’t expect her to have such a stark reaction. He couldn’t help but snicker. “Surrrreeeeee,” was the tease. He did his best to refocus thereafter, though. This was for Chloe and Amber (and he guessed Bones? How you doin’ over there buddy.)
This concentration was immediately shattered, however, as the sudden clap had him jolting backwards and awkwardly falling flat on his ass. Chloe bristled hackling up in the familiar startled cat pose once again. A low yowl escaped from her— that turned into a Roar??? It shrieked out and had Gabe’s hairs standing on end all over again. Even Amber’s ears fell flat against her head. Gabe sat there for a moment stunned before a slow steady laugh escaped from him. “Hot damn Chloe….” he laughed leaning forward and awkwardly standing up again. “What the hell.” He knew she was a cat but he didn’t even realize she knew that.

Gazouillius held her gaze on the little battle field, watching the humans and their fellow Pokemon party members as they trained. It didn’t look harsh. It didn’t look cruel. There was no bite to any of their words--well, except at one another, but they also...laughed about it? So then it wasn’t really biting, just the playful pecks and snips that nestlings did. She didn’t know her trainer well enough, either, to tell if this was how she usually was.
She was more vocal, certainly, and her expressions weren’t as tight, but was that “at ease”? Maybe. She didn’t really put Gazouillius at ease herself, but...
<...I haven’t really given her a chance yet.> She admitted, head lowered, <I’ve been too...too scared to.> It felt too hard to start over again. To trust somebody again. But Bones was here, and he was kind, and he was listening--and not wasn’t pushing her into talking about things, like that pushy Gallade tried to. <How are you not afraid of them? They’re so much bigger than us, and this world is so full of them...>
Coccinelle grinned more, still bouncing in place. <You and your trainer are so close! He could hear you from all the way over there, I noticed! It is so, so nice that you have a person who loves you so much, who you love so much!>
As Baby Girl’s Fake-Out left Gabe startled and knocked over Senara started to laugh, but the sound of it got overshadowed by a sudden ear-drum aching Roar. From a distance Tromper winced. Yowch! That sounded bad! Right in the blast zone Baby Girl’s smile dropped right from her face as fear swept through her little phantom form, and, just like that, she was gone in a beam of red light that drew her right back into the pokeball at Senara’s hip. Senara yelped: “H-Hey!” Before she could palm for the pokeball, though, another one opened up in a flash of white.
When the light cleared away, somebody who was decidedly not a Sableye was sitting there, looking confused as could be. A teensy tiny little Ivysaur, smaller, perhaps, than any that Gabe had ever seen--though both of his ‘saur’ line Pokemon were giants, so that might have been an unfair comparison. Veneur looked around the training ground, blinking at Tromper, who looked equally confused back at him, and then his large red eyes landed on Chloe and Amber. What. Why. Why was he fighting two Fire-type Pokemon? That could not have been his trainer’s choice. No, it must have been an accident. Then again, Tromper was out here, too, so...
Was he training fodder for somebody else’s Pokemon?
Uuuuugh, that would suck.
<Hi?> He at least waved a vine at the Litten and Flareon, then at the human fellow with purple hair. <Caaaaan somebody fill me in on what’s going on here?>
“Veneur...” Senara sighed and started fumbling with her equipment. Of course she’d call out the one other Grass-type Pokemon she had in her rotation. Of freakin’ course. “Sorry, sorry Chloe, chéri, you don’t have to fight this one, I can put him back. That was an impressive Roar! Uh, Ven, you alright?” He nodded his little toad head and took a couple steps back so he wasn’t right in Chloe’s face, still not sure what was going on.
Bone’s ears twitched and settled again. He supposed…. He hadn’t really given Gabe or his troop a chance either… He was observing them, judging them, but not really connecting with them. A low noise reverberated in his throat as he pulled his head up off his paws and lay ‘upright’. How was he not afraid of them? That was a question he could answer, though. <Many… not all, but many…. Are good…. And I have enough sense to smell out the good ones> his ears twitched, and he then raised a paw to his nose and booped it for good measure.
Color flushed on Lizbeth’s features, and a low growl escaped from her. A low huff escaped from her as she looked off at Gabe again. She loved him dearly. From the minute she had laid eyes on him, she was sure he was her human…. But then he went and…. Her arms folded around herself, and one claw dug into her side as she frowned off again harder.
Chloe stood puffed as the Sableye was forced back in her ball. Gabe laughed harder. Oh hell, oh fuck, she really just…. screamed another Pokemon away. As another stream of light released another Pokemon, however, both slowly relaxed as they saw what it was— “…. It’s tiny….” Gabe blinked a couple of times. He was used to giants as standard. Chloe immediately blushed and backed up again. O-o-oh. Oh he was a Grass type and even more like the Turtwig she liked than before…. Oh goodness. Oh no. Oh no no no no no.
Before Chloe could say anything, however, Amber was jumping in. <Like hi! Nice to meet you, omg! Chloe here called you out all the way from your Pokeball with like! That roar! Omg!> Chloe’s ears sat further back on her head, and she crouched a little downwards. She… she hadn’t meant to like…. like….
Gabe was still snickering. He covered his mouth, but the delight in his eyes was self-evident. Fuck, that had been funny. Shifting a little, Gabe did reach and pet Chloe, though. She bristled and then immediately relaxed again looking back at him. “We’ll have to use that in a battle sometime…” A different battle. Chloe sighed. “Maybe even the Water Gym.” Gabe snickered softly. Chloe made a face. She did not want to get soaked, thanks. Teasing aside, Chloe looked back at the Bulbasaur and was once again thankful he wasn’t a Turtwig…. Phew, right? Right.
A small rolling coo came from Gazouilius, not unlike a slight laugh. His saying that "many humans" were good was like saying that most of the time you were safe from something horrible happening. That wasn't the same as "never". It wasn't the same as saying that she'd be safe, now, with this human. But if he said he could sniff out the good ones...he was probably just joking, but it wasn't like she could dispute it. She didn't have a nose herself. So. <Then if you're so good at that, can I trust you to do it for me...?> Her feathers rustled as she shifted, clicking against each other like cutlery instead of wings. <At least until I can see it for myself. Then you won't have to...>
Senara grumbled as she pulled Veneur's pokeball out for real this time, along with Baby Girl's. "Not every Pokemon in the world is ginormous like your beasts, vous foutu roi pour taille." Why, no, she wasn't going to translate that thank you very much. Veneur was distracted for a moment by the very excitable Flareon. Oh Arceus, someone'd had their morning chesto berry. At least she explained things after, like, three very excited abbreviations. <Oh, okay, that makes more sense...uh, is she gonna be okay?>
His vine reached out and waved in front of the Litten's face. <No harm no foul, right?>
"Veneur, return." Senara held out the pokeball and clicked the little button in the center, and in a flash of red light the tiny little Ivysaur was drawn back into his ball. She clipped him to her waist and tossed Baby Girl's up into the air. When she took shape from the white light, she still look a wee bit more shaken than before, frowning and looking pointedly away from Chloe, thin little arms crossed over the emerald on her chest. Senara sighed, but a smile slid onto her lips despite herself. "Êtes-vous gênée d'avoir peur, petite fille? Ça arrive! Allez, vous avez encore une bataille à mener."
Baby Girl huffed and pointedly turned herself just so that she was now looking the opposite direction and still very much not at Chloe. <I wasn't scared! She cheated!>
Senara rolled her eye. She couldn't understand her Pokemon's thoughts, but she could read her body language. Brat. "Well then. Fine. Tromper, Mega Drain on Amber."
Tromper didn't miss a beat. With his tiny wiggling arms he "tossed" out a few more lights at the overly excited fire dog. They returned and his scratches--the ones that had absolutely been a hack or cheat or something--began to fade away slowly. Ahhh, nice.
A soft, particularly puppy-like smile pulled onto Bones’ face very briefly as he listened to Gazouilius’s request. His short stubby tail wagged a little back and forth. <Sounds good… I will do my best…> was the answer. In few seconds, he hardly looked like the cool loner Houndour that he displayed so often to Gabe’s cohort, but rather the soft, honest pup he was deep down, as much a pack mate as an ally.
Gabe wasn’t sure what Senara said, but he hardly needed it then. Her tone enough had him snickering. “Is that so?” he asked, not expecting a response back. His eyes trailed over to Amber and then to Chloe. Amber was huge by comparison, but Chloe would grow, right? Eventually, he hoped.
Speaking of Amber, she was smiling down this Ivysaur with all the gusto of a teenaged drama queen. Was Chloe going to be ok, though? <Oh yeah totally!> Amber assured looking back to Chloe who wasn’t exactly sure herself. If it hadn’t been for her black and red coat, Chlo would have shown just how brightly her blush actually was right then. Her eyes pulled away from the Ivysaur, and a small noise escaped from her, not even really a word in Poketongue but just… a tonal note that made more sense in context. Yeah, she would be fine, but at what cost? The headpat had her nodding along softly. R-right.
And Gabe was now more aware of these thoughts than he had been previously. Oh, oh gosh. How had he missed this before then? Ehehehe, it didn’t matter now. ‘You ok there, Chloe?’ Chloe looked back at Gabe for only a second before looking forward again. Y-yep! She was f-fine! It was fine, Gabe! It was fine! As the Sableye was released again, Gabe looked up once again. Back on task, then. “Ready, you two,” he stated. Amber was quick to bounce back into place. Chloe groaned softly but lowered her form to the ground ready to go.
Amber whined as a little bit of energy was taken from her. It was far from the most damaging move given her Typing, but she really wished she could do something similar!!! Gabe, however, hadn’t forgotten their point here. “Amber use Double Kick,” he ordered. If Normal Type moves weren’t going to shake this strange delusion, he’d move on to Fighting Type. “Chloe,” Gabe paused eyeballing the Litten then the Sableye and her trainer. “Give that faux-Ghost a Lick.” Heh, it wouldn’t do as much damage but was funny as heck to him.
The confidence Chloe had had was dissolving quickly underfoot. She was still flustered from that other Grass type, and now she was being asked to refocus on the battle again- and… and uh…. W-well that required her to be up close and personal with a G-grass Type and… And could she do this? That close???
ihPoyBDyp_
No. No she could. She could do this. Grass Pokemon could heal just like regular Pokemon, even against her flames. They weren’t as easily broken as plants or animals were. Glowing with Ghostly power for a moment, she bounded in after Amber’s attack to deliver the damage, one that Tromper could not deny would do less than expected for a partial Ghost Type.

Gazouilius, now well and truly relaxed, fell into a calm sort of quiet by Bones' side. She felt more comfortable now with trying to trust these humans. These...questionably smart but seemingly well-meaning humans. If Bones felt like they could be trusted, she'd try.
And that's really all that could be asked for.
Baby Girl's huffing and puffing took a backseat in Senara's attention as both the Flareon and Litten moved in on Tromper, who, like the self-confident moron that he was, didn't even try to move out of the way of either of their attacks. Amber's paws came down right on his dome-shaped head and he winced, but, after a moment, he shook off the minimal amount of damage it had done. He...was sure that Ghosts were unaffected by this sort of physical fighting. Baby Girl hadn't been touched! But maybe...maybe...
Maybe he always misunderstood these sorts of things? Maybe because he was only partially a Ghost-type, the attack still did some damage?! Yes! After all, that hardly hurt at all! So his partial Ghost-typing saved him just so! And, similarly, the oncoming lick from the Litten would--oh. Oh no, that was going to hurt a LOT, wasn't it--?!
Litten's lick brushed right against his cheek, and while it did hurt--and made him shudder, yuck, who knows where that tongue has been--it didn't...hurt so much? Not as much as the Fire-type attack. Which...was weird...if he was partially a Ghost, and partially a Grass, shouldn't the attacks still hurt just the same one way or another?
...and...wait...Fighting-type moves weren't resisted by Grass-typing...
...huh?
Tromper stood there, struck dumb as the internal logic of his typing failed to line up. How could he be weak to Fire, but not to Ghost? How could he be resilient to Fighting? Maybe he was part Poison-type instead of Grass, like a Ghastly!...but no, then his weak spot to Fire made even less sense! Maybe he was three types? Was that a thing? No. No, even he knew that much about how the world worked. He couldn't be Grass-type, Ghost-type, and Poison-type. So..then...

[Fucking--]
...so then what does this mean!?!!? What type am I?!?! What's going on???!!?
Senara blinked twice, staring at the immobilized mushroom. "Huh, did she paralyze him?" She asked aloud. She didn't see the telltale sparks of a proper paralyzing debuff but Tromper was definitely not moving an inch. Baby Girl stopped pouting just to snort.
<Wow. Moron.>
"Tromper? Troooomper?" Senara cupped her mouth with her hand, "Earth to Tromper!"
Nope. Nothing. Not even a twitch.
"...Gabe my mushroom is more defective than I thought."
Chloe hopped back a couple of beats to get as far away from Tromper as possible. There was a hint of color to her cheeks that was mostly obscured by the color of her fur, but if one happened to look directly at her, they would surely see it. It had been an attack, just an attack. It had been an attack against a dumb opponent that was clearly not understanding the situation he was in— but that had still been a lick, and the after effect was threatening to end her existence.
Amber glanced sideways and saw the color on Chloe’s features… and immediately started laughing much to the latter’s chagrin. <What are you blushing at anyways?> Amber asked with a tease. Chloe let out a low rumble in her throat. She knew now that she could roar. She could definitely roar Amber away if she tried!
The confused mental distressed of Tromper was so loud that it roared above the thoughts of other Pokemon leaving Gabe to stand there eyebrows knitting. He felt… something weird towards this Foongus, and he didn’t like it. At Senara’s words, however, he snapped from this and shook his head. “I think he’s having an existential crisis,” he answered reaching up to rub his forehead. “His thoughts are painfully loud right now…” Or maybe that was just Gabe being overly receptive to them right then.
Reaching for that power in the back of his mind, Gabe took in a slow breath and steadied himself. His eyes fixed on the Foongus as he sought out a gaze to lock on to. He rarely needed to use this power on a Pokemon, and it was always so hit or miss. Still, might as well give it a shot now that he did have a stronger connection to the thoughts of Pokemon in general. “You’re not a Ghost type, Foongus,” that psychic suggestion pushed forth from his lips.
Lizbeth had been quiet for the most part, just vaguely ignoring Coccinelle’s presence as she watched the ongoing battle. Her tail flicked back and forth careful not to light the tree on fire as she watched, equal parts disappointed and annoyed by the Foongus. This could have been over so much quicker if she had been on Gabe’s side of the field. Even if this was supposedly training for those who actually needed it, ugh.

"A what? I mean, like," Senara waved her hand in a slightly dismissive manner, "Been there, done that. But he's a mushroom. How hard is that to understand?"
Hard enough, apparently, for Tromper to still be panicking about this. His little nose-mouth-thing wriggled as he continued running through his thoughts. What was he? His whole life he'd thought he was a Ghost-type! After all, his family had been full of them! Why would he be the odd one out? He was as much his father's kids as they were...just because they were Trevenant, and his siblings Phantumps, didn't make him different...
...did it?
Gabe's thoughts beat into his little head and he looked up at him startled, beady eyes wide. <I am!!> Tromper trilled in a sound that didn't quite sound like any noise an animal could make. It was weird. Like a sharp keening whistle, rather than a voice. <I'm a Ghost! I have to be! Why else would I know Ghost-type moves, huh?? I got it from my dad! My siblings are ghosts, too! I'm just as much a ghost as they are!...>

[Thank God]
Tromper's whining came to a slow but eventual halt, tiny arms limp at his sides.
<...I...but then I'm different from all of them...that's not fair. Being a ghost is in my hyphae--my roots. How come I'm not one if they all are...? Am I not special enough...?>
At the very least, it appeared his internal debate had subsided. It made too much sense (on top of Gabe's psychic suggestion) to reconsider again. He was hurt by normal moves and handled fire poorly, but was strong against fighting moves--something a Poison-type could be, but not a Grass-type. Baby Girl had taken everything so much better because she was a ghost. And he wasn't. It was so simple and yet it hurt.
Senara, unable to hear Tromper's struggle, furrowed her brows and looked up at Gabe again. "Is he, uh, figuring things out?" She wasn't sure if she sounded properly concerned, but that was nothing new. She was never good at sounding sympathetic. Coccinelle hadn't been lying about that one bit. Maybe she should actually work on that instead of hoping a literal mind-reader would be there to feed her social cues.
Gabe’s brows furrowed as the Foongus argued against his words. “No you’re not,” he answered out loud this time with a vague tone of irritation. As the Foongus continued to complain, Gabe only sighed and looked up at Senara. He could encourage and empower Chloe. He couldn’t change delusions of idiocy.
Or… Oh. The pokewords became thoughts that Gabe could hear and… Gabe winced. He knew what being different from everyone felt like, even his identical siblings, but ugh was he really connecting with a Foongus about this??? Gabe slapped a hand over his face and then pinched the bridge of his nose. A slow breath drew in and out of him before Senara’s question actually registered. “Probably,” he answered Senara. Probably not as helpful as he could have been.
“Apparently his siblings were Phantump or something and he knows a Ghost move so he thought…” Gabe paused and made a face rather than actually finish the retelling. “I think we’ve made some progress,” he said after a moment slowly looking at the Foongus again and raising an eyebrow. “But whether it sticks or not…” Well, they’d have to see, probably.
Meanwhile, Chloe and Amber were actually listening in on this existential crisis vocalized to the rest of them. The prior was … vaguely impressed that Foongus actually seemed to have a break through while the latter was just kinda happy it didn’t escalate further. Both finally turned to Gabe as he had started talking to them. As Gabe looked down and noticed them, however, he pressed his lips together and then smiled a bit. “That wasn’t a bad battle, but maybe we should take a break,” he mused.
Post by Senara Spargo on Jun 10, 2020 17:09:53 GMT
Huh...yeah, that was possible, wasn't it. Senara wasn't a breeder but it made sense that a Foongus could have a Trevenant parent or something. Maybe the other one had left or been captured before he had hatched, which was why he never figured it out for himself what he was? She always thought Pokemon had some kind of innate instinct on what they were, though. Hm. Well, they were young. And not the first person in the world to be confused about themselves. Senara gave a small snort at Gabe's look of something. "I mean, one step forward is still something. Thanks for talking to him."
"I promise that someday I'll stop using you as a radio for my Pokemon," she snickered again, and stepped onto the "field" and up to Tromper. She had to get into a crouch to pat his head, and he didn't budge as she did so. He just still looked sad. Which was a little strange, as he was really just two little beady eyes and a big nose. How he still managed to emote so clearly was a mystery in itself.
She pat him on the cap a couple of times gently. "Do you want to go back in your ball? Take a breather? You did really good today," she struggled again to sound more sincere than glib cheeriness, but it was awkward. Tromper let out another small whistle. "Is that a...?" The Foongus nodded. Alright. That was easier to understand.
Baby Girl let out a long yawn as her trainer gathered Tromper's pokeball and tapped it on his head, returning him in a beam of red light. <Man. I thought it was just you humans with your problems. Even the rest of them are bad. Am I the weird one?>
Senara didn't hear Baby Girl's snide commentary. She just clicked her over anyway, arm extended down towards her. "Viens ici, petite fille. J'ai besoin de mon gobelin de cheveux." As called the Sableye scooted up her trainer's arm, onto her shoulder, and nestled into her hair. Her golden fur was darker than Senara's blonde but they still looked similar enough for her to hide in there pretty well. Senara giggled and gave her a little scritch under the chin. "I'm game for a break. Any more of this, and one of us will need a proper therapist license before we start again. Want to hit a cafe or something?"
Her eyes trailed back to behind her, and finally landed on what Gazouillis was up to. For a moment Senara was stunned, but her hand rose to cover her mouth and the little squeak that threatened to push past her lips. Oh no. The little Skarmory was snoozing against Bones. Oh. Oh nooooooo, that's so cuuuuuuute...ahhhhhh!! She flapped her hand in Gabe's direction to get his attention as well. "Gabe. Gabby. Look. Loooook!"
A small snort escaped from Gabe. “You should learn to read their feelings through aura or something,” he answered snidely. “Everyone who uses aura on TV can do that.” Granted there were plenty of things people with psychic powers were supposedly capable of and very few of which actually applied to him, heh. His attention returned to Chloe again. ‘You did really well today… we’ll… work on it some more later, alright?’ he projected. She slowly nodded. Reaching for her Pokeball, Gabe returned her and then Amber right after.
Right after, Gabe’s mind reached out for Lizbeth next only to find a weird— barrier? Almost? There? She was staring hard at the ground and doing her best to keep her thoughts disinterested so he had to wonder if…. If maybe it was something against Coccinelle, actually, heh. Looking that direction only strengthened his guess. His attention was pulled back by Senara’s words. “Sounds good,” he agreed. Food sounded great. Donuts and cake and candy and who knew what else sounded great. He tried again to reach at Liz’s mind to at least get her to come this general direction but—
Senara’s thoughts immediately bashed into the side of his head instead. Gabe winced and squinted sideways at her before looking down and— Oh. Oh, heh well then. “Looks like someone got through to her,” he murmured looking to Bones who was feigning sleep as well resting his maw on his paws. One eye opened up and then the other to look directly at Gabe. Though he could forced out Gabe’s thoughts, for a moment, Bones was willing to welcome them. ‘Nice work, Bones…’ The Houndour closed both eyes again, a noticeable mental shrug back.
Glancing back to Senara, Gabe smiled a little softer. “We’ll have to arrange a few playdates,” he smirked a bit. As if they weren’t already working closely enough already. A sound caught his ears, and as Gabe glanced sideways, he did see Lizbeth coming towards them now, her tail swishing from side to side. Gabe smirked.
