Rui laughed a bit. "I'm just as surprised as you are," she said about her new Pokémon's evolution. Hmm, she needed a name, and Rui couldn't think of anything fitting off the top of her head. She'd have to sit down and fumble with an internet search later.
Rui heard the crackling sound that interrupted Shalin's explanation. She'd barely let out a yell of surprise when a wall of pink and white was before her: Blissey had moved to stand between her and the oncoming flames. Fortunately, her protection turned out to be unnecessary. Unfortunately, Kiku was now surrounded by a vortex of fire (why was it always fire today?). Shalin called upon a large Persian, apparently named Serena, in fancy riding gear and told Rui to get on and run.
"But—!" Rui began to protest, but one look at the situation told her that she would be hopelessly outmatched if she tried to join this battle. "Okay," she said instead, and she recalled Blissey back into her Luxury Ball. Grimacing at the first whiff of Kiku's foul-smelling musk drifting her way, she looked at the expectant Persian and...

... found it much easier than she expected to hook her foot through a stirrup and hoist herself onto the Pokémon's back. She gripped the bridle and immediately realized she didn't actually know what to do. "Uh... giddy-up?" She blushed, feeling rather silly for saying that; the unimpressed look that Serena gave her didn't help matters. Luckily, the Persian seemed to get the message and began bounding down the path away from the battle and the encroaching stink.
Rui wasn't sure how far they'd traveled when they came to a stop in a particularly sandy area. She turned her head to see if she could see Shalin behind them. "Do you think they're okay?" Rui asked Serena. She didn't get a response. Rui turned to see the Persian staring at something on the ground; a closer look revealed the black eye membranes of a Sandile buried in the sand. Serena lowered herself into a hunting crouch.
"Um, Serena?" Rui asked. No response except for a whip of the Persian's tail. The Sandile's eyes widened in alarm. Uh-oh.

Rui was surprising herself with her own reflexes today: She quickly unhooked one foot from a stirrup and used the other to hop off the Persian before said Pokémon leapt at the Sandile. Rui landed hard on her feet, but at least she didn't fall over or get trampled or anything. She sighed in exhausted relief.

While she was more used to the stench of Skuntank musk more than most trainers, being in such proximity to the passed-out, heavily sprayed Delphox made even Shalin throw a coughing fit after the battle. She pinched her nose shut and used just one hand to steer Caprice, the Ninetales' lungs also not appreciative of the Toxic residue.
By the time the blonde and her fire-type had caught up with Serena and Rui, the travelers were far enough away from ground zero that the odor was merely "mildly unpleasant" - something they would likely be dealing with for the next mile and a half or so, but not the unbearable, gag-inducing air they would have been breathing had they fled the scene on foot.
"You okay?" Shalin asked, both of them breathing a bit heavily, the rider letting out another cough. "We should be far enough away that it won't be as bad now." Serena had dove after a wild Sandile, very easily catching it and making it her plaything for as long as the trainers idled. "...Give her a few minutes," she sighed. It took a scavenging Durant that snapped its mandibles in the feline's direction to get her to put it down. "...Never mind. We should give this one a wide berth," the girl answered as Caprice and Serena backed away from the steel-type that stared at them menacingly.
"Yeah, I'm all right," Rui said as she caught her breath; even breathing through her mouth, she could smell the stench from where she was, and she was glad she hadn't been at its epicenter.
"Caprice would have a large type advantage here," Rui said as she watched Caprice and Serena back away from the wild Durant. Then, immediately realizing how obvious that was, she quickly added, "Of course, I'm sure you knew that."
A great caw sounded from above, and a shadow passed over Rui's head. A Honchkrow, looking like it had just been in a fight, swooped down and cawed at the Durant, who hissed back and snapped its mandibles together. This threat display continued for only a few more seconds before the Honchkrow, shamefully realizing he was outmatched, turned to Rui, a dark gleam in his eye.
Rui held her hands up reflexively. "We don't mean you any harm," she said. "We were just passing th—"
But the Honchkrow interrupted her with a loud caw and flew straight at her, wings spread wide.
"Raijin!" Rui shouted, tossing out the Pichu's Poké Ball. Almost as soon as he had emerged, he was hit by the Honchkrow's Wing attack and knocked back with a squeak. Rui winced. She'd instinctively chosen Raijin because of his type advantage, but would he be strong enough to take on a Honchkrow?
"Raijin, are you okay?" she asked. The Pichu let out a frustrated little growl as he pulled himself to his feet. Rui turned toward the Honchkrow, expecting another swoop that she'd have to warn Raijin of; instead, she saw the Honchkrow stagger in mid-air and stumble to the ground, sparks jumping between his feathers. Raijin's Static had paralyzed him—perfect!
"Raijin, can you use Thunder Shock?"
Raijin squeaked his determined assent and shot a jolt of electricity at his vulnerable opponent, who squawked in pain as he was hit. He spread his wings and glared, only to drop to one knee under his paralysis's effects.
"Keep it up, Raijin!"
Between Raijin's type advantage and the Honchkrow's weakened state and paralysis, it wasn't long before the Big Boss Pokémon fell to the ground, defeated. He let out a pitiful little caw, knowing it would take a long, long time for him to recover from such a humiliating defeat. And after he'd just been ousted from his mob, too...

Shalin rolled her eyes at Rui's remark about Caprice's type advantage. It would have been easy prey for her yes. Arceus, it would have probably been easy prey for Sol, even. "That's not the problem," Shalin answered, about to explain when Rui added an even more obvious remark. Tension and frustration started to well up within her. "Yes, I understand, but that's not the problem," she repeated, raising her voice. "While I enjoy a rough-and-tumble ride, I wouldn't want to be on Caprice's back while she's fighting. If she gets hit, so do I!"
As she was about to expand on her conversation with Rui, Shalin heard a familiar roar and thumping footfalls getting louder and louder. She turned around to see another Kangaskhan chasing her and Caprice - this one not having the telltale pouch. It looked steaming mad, and it was big and tall. Perhaps it was that other Kangaskhan's mate. It made sense - aggression had to run in that family. This wasn't an unprovoked attack, though - this wild had a wife to avenge.
With the speed he was charging at, Shalin didn't have much time, and if she fled, Rui would be in grave danger. She had no choice but to fight. "Rui, might want to cover your ears!" The girl recalled Serena, replacing her with a giant bug-type even taller than she was, the Yanmega that emerged staring the Kangaskhan down with red, compound eyes.
"Flit, you know what to do!" Shalin, likewise, covered her ears after directing Caprice to slow down where she could comfortably hold on with only her legs. The bug-type let the enraged Kangaskhan come to him, jumping into the air at the last possible second and...well, flitting away. His droning wings drowned out almost all noise in the area, even generating a localized gust of wind when he took off. For such a large Pokémon, Flit was very nimble, able to dodge the Kangaskhan's swipes one after another.
As Flit swooped in for a powerful bite, the wild snatched the giant Pokémon by its tail. Yanmega were known for being one of the only bug-types able to carry a grown adult in flight, but this Kangaskhan was too big and heavy for him to lift. After taking a slap to the face, the dragonfly wasn't holding anything else back.
Flit's wings disappeared into streaks of red, buzzing so loudly that Shalin could hear them quite clearly even with her ears covered. Knowing how loud it was helped Shalin prepare better, but it still scared her. She imagined she'd get used to it after a few times. The Kangaskhan's mouth was wide open in pain from the Yanmega's body throbbing in its hand, being quickly forced to let him go. Having had enough, the normal-type turned tail, his right arm dragging. Flit landed and walked alongside Caprice, the two of them approaching Rui again now that the coast was clear. Finally, the girl could relax her arms.
Rui winced as Shalin raised her voice. Yeah, okay, she probably deserved that for her remark. "I'm sorry," she said, bowing her head. "I was... sort of under the assumption that you would get off before she fought."
The worryingly familiar roar and thudding caused her to turn wide-eyed to its source: a charging male Kangaskhan. They just couldn't catch a break, could they? Shalin was quick to react, telling Rui to cover her ears before sending out a huge Yanmega. A terrifying thought flashed through Rui's mind: Was it, too, meant to be a ride Pokémon?
"Raijin, cover your ears," Rui said. The Pichu and his trainer both did so, but the buzzing sound that emitted from the Yanmega still startled them. What startled them even more, though, was a pained neigh from behind them. Rui turned her head to see a Ponyta with her ears and head lowered, looking pained. Where had she come from?
"It's okay," Rui said, uncovering her ears now that the droning had subsided. She took a ginger step forward, attempting to gauge the Ponyta's reaction, but Raijin had other plans: He ran on all fours toward the Ponyta, who looked alarmed for a split second before Raijin began squeaking excitedly at him. But then Flit's buzzing increased in volume again, forcing them all to cover their ears again. Rui looked back to see the Kangaskhan turning tail and running away.
"I think it's over," she said, uncovering her ears. Raijin squeaked in relief, and the Ponyta slowly raised her head, watching Flit carefully. She was soon distracted by Raijin's enthused squeaking and watched as he pointed first at Shalin on Caprice and then at the Ponyta herself. Rui couldn't quite tell, but she thought she saw the Ponyta smile as she lowered herself to let Raijin hop onto her back.
"Raijin, I don't think—" Rui started, but Raijin was already scrambling onto the Ponyta's back. "I don't think that's safe."
Raijin, however, was unperturbed; after all, if the Ponyta tried anything funny, he could just zap her. The Ponyta stood and looked Rui right in the eye, her tail swishing back and forth. Rui let herself relax.
"Just be careful, please."
Raijin and the Ponyta both let out excited cries before the Ponyta began prancing around, keeping close enough to assuage Rui's worries. Still, Rui kept her hand near her Blissey's Poké Ball in case things went south. Raijin giggled as he was carried around, and he waved at Shalin as if trying to say, "Look, now I'm like you!"
Rui looked up at Shalin, only to be reminded of the soured mood between them. "I really am sorry for what I said," Rui said. "I was mostly thinking out loud; I didn't mean to upset you."

"It's okay," Shalin answered, Caprice rolling her eyes at her trainer's over-reaction. "I've heard of stories of trainers that wouldn't be beyond learning mounted combat with a Pokémon. Not me, though!" She threw her hands up in the air, Flit buzzing for a split second when his trainer accidentally touched the end of his wing. "Sorry buddy!" The bug-type smiled, looking about as docile as a Yanmega could.
Once the battle was over, the rider tilted her head toward Rui, guiding Caprice closer to her and giving Flit ample space to stretch his wings that spanned nearly nine feet long. Shalin couldn't help but laugh as she saw Raijin holding on tight, the Ponyta lightly kicking and bucking. "The Pichu is a natural," she laughed. "You should catch this one, Rui - the freedom something like a Ponyta gives you is great. They're really easy to learn with, too - just remember how fast they can run. I wouldn't want one now...I'd find being on a Ponyta...kind of boring." She laughed at herself for her last comment - while true, it sounded silly at best, awkward at worst to those who didn't understand her.
Caprice needed time to recover from her wounds still. Carrying Shalin wasn't going to help with that much. Flit was still fresh, but she wasn't comfortable getting more than a few feet into the air with him. Plus, without earplugs, she wouldn't be able to fly particularly fast. The girl dismounted from Caprice and climbed between the Yanmega's still wings. They didn't stay still for long, though - a low hum filled the air around the two, but nowhere near as disruptive and deafening as when Flit was fighting off the Kangaskhan. Shalin let out a happy cry that sounded like it came from the other side of a running fan. "Shall we head further west now?" she asked Rui.
Rui's eyes widened at Shalin's description of mounted combatants. "That sounds extraordinarily dangerous," she said in a low voice. And horrifying, she thought, but she didn't feel the need to add that.
Rui watched Raijin hold onto the Ponyta's back as the latter pranced about. She couldn't help the fond smile that snuck across her lips at seeing just how much fun Raijin was having. She'd expected the Pichu to challenge the Ponyta to a battle (or, worse, initiate a battle without waiting for Rui's command), given his usual feistiness, but this was a nice change of pace.
Shalin explained the virtues of owning a Ponyta, specifically as a mount. Rui watched Raijin and the Ponyta for a few more seconds as she thought. "I don't know," she finally said. "I think she might be too small for me to ride." She joined in Shalin's laughter with a small giggle of her own. "I can imagine it would be boring for you, yes, given your experience with different mounts."
Raijin called out, and Rui looked over at him to see the Ponyta approaching with him still on her back. The Ponyta lowered herself again, and Raijin hopped off and ran to Rui, squeaking excitedly. He pointed to Rui's Poké Ball belt and then to the Ponyta; it didn't take long to realize what he was asking. Rui creased her brow in thought. On the one hand, yes, this Ponyta was too small for her to ride (but perhaps she'd be big enough as a Rapidash), and she already had one Fire-type she was going to have to introduce to Clarence. On the other hand, she and Raijin were clearly having fun, and...
"Are you trying to use Charm on me again?" Rui asked as Raijin clasped his paws in front of him and stared up at Rui with big, begging eyes. Raijin let out a long squeak in response. Rui sighed fondly through her nose and looked at the Ponyta.
"What do you think?" Rui asked, holding up a Poké Ball. The Ponyta stepped forward and nuzzled the Ball with her nose, causing it to burst open and suck her inside. Rui and Raijin both watched with anticipation to see what the Ponyta's answer would be...

For a moment, it looked like a successful catch, but then the Ball burst open, causing Rui's eyebrows to raise and Raijin's ears to twitch up in surprise. The Ponyta reformed before them, shook out her mane, and then looked Rui directly in the eye before shaking her head.
"Oh," Rui muttered. Well, this was odd. Usually, this was the part where the wild Pokémon up and fled.
Raijin let out a confused, hurt squeak. The Ponyta looked down at him with a smile and a whinny. Whatever she said made Raijin pause, then lower his ears with a resigned squeak. The Ponyta looked back at Rui before rearing up with a neigh, turning around, and trotting off.
Rui was about to turn to Shalin for a comment, but then she heard a familiar low buzzing that made her tense up. She looked behind her to see... oh, dear Arceus, Flit was a mount Pokémon. Rui smiled uneasily. "Ah, right," she said after Shalin asked if they should continue. "Let's continue on, then." She recalled the pouting Raijin back into his Poké Ball. How would she even keep up with a Yanmega...?

Luckily for Rui, Shalin was still getting used to controlling Flit - she wasn't terribly comfortable hovering more than a few feet off the ground. His wings disappeared into a blur as he jumped off the ground and started hovering, any verbal reply Shalin was giving distorted by her mount's entire body shaking. Controlling the Pokémon looked about as awkward as Shalin found it to be - the giant bug-type always faced the same direction, regardless of which direction she leaned. She even found herself flying backwards once, letting Rui take the lead westward for a moment. A wandering trainer was walking the opposite direction, a sniffing, aggressive-looking Growlithe at her side taking note of the fluttering Yanmega and trainer. Both of them backed off as Flit jerked toward the two suddenly.
After a few minutes of flying backward, forward, and in every direction around Rui imaginable, she let out a dejected sigh and had the insect land. "Now I just feel stupid," the girl pouted. "Since I became a trainer seven years ago, I always wanted to fly on a Pokémon like this one. And now I have no clue how to even control him." Her partner kept up with Rui on land instead, crawling on the road like a Centiskorch would move. "It's just so much!" she whined, her voice still sounding a little shaky from the powerful shaking.
Rui flinched back a bit when Flit suddenly jerked toward her, but luckily, there was no collision. Instead, the Yanmega carried Shalin in every direction possible, including backward, which caused Rui to stop and turn around. She stood there frozen for a moment, unsure of what to do to help—or even if she could help in this case—but luckily, Shalin got moving again soon enough.
Eventually, though, Shalin landed, and her tone changed in such a dramatic way that it stunned Rui into momentary silence. Shalin had been so confident, so enthusiastic just moments before, but now she sounded utterly crestfallen. Rui's heart clenched, and for a moment, she was just a child in the woods again, weeping at her inability to commune with the spirits.
"I-It's okay!" she stammered out louder than she meant to, recalling her father's words to her all those years ago. "It may seem hard now, but if you practice, I'm sure you'll get it."
Unfortunately, her moment was cut short when she gasped in surprise at something wrapping around her ankles. She stumbled back and managed to kick off her assailant, which turned out to be a Sandshrew. The Mouse Pokémon let out a frustrated growl as he pulled himself up. It took Rui a moment to fumble for Clarence's Poké Ball and send him out; by then, the Sandshrew was already digging back into the sand.
"Is it gone?" Rui asked once he'd disappeared. Her question was answered a moment later when she felt a shifting beneath her; this time, she stepped back before the Sandshrew could get its claws on her. When the Sandshrew emerged, Clarence let out a startling shout and hit the Sandshrew with an Astonish, knocking the Ground-type over into a daze.
Clarence's eyes flashed, and a series of colorful lights emerged from them and floated over to the Sandshrew, who stood and was immediately disoriented by them. He tried to fire a Poison Sting, but he saw double and fell over again in his stupor.
"Use Branch Poke," Rui commanded. Clarence floated forward and caught the Sandshrew in a headbutt with one of his branches, and that was it for the Ground-type. Rui let herself relax as Clarence floated over to her. "Good job," she said as she patted him on the head.

Shalin's surroundings went from a blur back to normal once Flit landed and started awkwardly walking westward, Hickory Town in sight. It was distant, but their destination being visible meant they were on the home stretch. "He's just really strong," Shalin continued after Rui's stammered comment, still humbled by how difficult Flit was to control. "That, and he can fly in any direction while facing any direction." The bug-type faced Rui and made the least menacing face he could come up with - Yanmega really couldn't make a face resembling a smile, after all - not with those crossing mandibles and jaws.
It was a bit hard for the girl to understand Rui with earplugs in. She heard most of Rui's advice before Flit suddenly turned north. He took a few steps north and faced away from the road, accidentally brushing his tail against Rui's side. "Flit, what's gotten into you?" Shalin asked. Tilting his wings downward, the giant bug-type powerfully vibrated, his nine-foot wingspan churning a powerful current that unearthed several Burmy camouflaged with the badlands.
It took a quick eye for Shalin to discover the smallest of them was actually a Wormadam, barely clinging to its underground nest. Determined, Flit shook his body to cement his grip on the dry ground before buzzing even harder, the only other thing audible being the howling wind his wings created. Unable to remain rooted any longer, the Wormadam rocketed north at unsafe speeds for a Pokémon of that size. Having demonstrated his power to both Rui and Shalin, the giant dragonfly relaxed his wings, Shalin still shaking. Once she got used to it, flying like that would be amazing! But until then...

Rui nodded at Shalin's explanation. "Well, I hope you can find a way to work with those factors," she said, raising her voice a bit so it'd be easier for Shalin to hear. Then, Flit looked at her, expression unreadable; all Rui could think to do in return was smile placatingly.
"Oh," Rui muttered as Flit's tail brushed up against her. Before she could move out of the way, though, Flit began to vibrate powerfully, and the force knocked Rui onto her rear. Clarence let out a worried warble and grabbed onto her arm. "I'm okay," she said, patting him on the head again.
The two watched, Rui with wide eyes, as Flit's huge wings created a current strong enough to send a colony of Burmy and Wormadam flying. They heard frantic chirping, and then a small Taillow flew past them after the Burmy. Rui slowly stood and allowed Clarence to take her hand. How on Earth was anyone supposed to fly on a Pokémon with that much power?
"Are... Are you all right?" Rui asked the still-shaking Shalin.

Being aboard Flit while he was churning up such powerful winds was probably not the greatest idea for Shalin, but she made it through somehow. She grabbed the black, pointed part of the Yanmega's exoskeleton with both hands, letting the reins drop in front of her, and slumped forward. "I'm...okay," she managed between breaths, her hair sprawled out in all directions as though it had been rocked by shock waves from all directions. "That...just...wore me out." There was no denying Flit's throbbing was mildly painful when he was flapping his wings at nearly their full power. On the bright side, the jumbo dragonfly's idle thrumming was barely noticeable for her anymore.
Flit hovered about three feet off the ground, trying to be as gentle as he could with his trainer while still generating enough lift to remain aloft. Shalin had to pull back on Flit from time to time to let Rui catch up, her Pokémon turning around to keep an eye on her. The droning was about as not-loud as Flit could manage, allowing the trainers to at least hear each other if they spoke up. "It's just over there!" Shalin pointed, passing above a Hitmonlee that swerved out of her bug-type's path to avoid the downburst generated during his flight. It was headed right in the path of a Ranger standing outside Hickory Town's north side.
"If you're sure you're all right," Rui said, nodding. She had her doubts, having felt the Yanmega's intense vibrations for herself, but she didn't want to prod—besides, Shalin was the experienced rider here, not Rui.
Rui had to speed up to a jog a few times to keep up with Flit, but fortunately, Shalin was able to pull him back enough for Rui to catch up without much difficulty. Rui smiled gratefully.
Shalin pointed out that they were close to the entrance of Hickory Town as a Hitmonlee passed them, fortunately seeming more interested in a distant Ranger. An angry squeaky chitter caught Rui and Clarence's attention, and they both turned to see a Burmy, its sandy cloak partially blown away, skittering toward them. Rui could only assume it was one of the ones that Flit had blown away. She looked back at the Yanmega and the trainer perched on top of him and remembered Shalin's words about not wanting to be a mounted combatant.
"Clarence, return." Rui recalled the surprised Phantump back to his Poké Ball, not wanting him to see who she was about to send out. She'd properly introduce them later, give them time to get used to each other somewhere safe. For now, though, she sent out Onibi by himself.
"Onibi, use—" And Rui realized she didn't actually know what Onibi's moves were. She'd have to take a guess: "Ember?"
Onibi shot out a small ball of fire from his mouth at the Burmy, who squeaked in alarm and quickly used Protect. Rui felt a flash of déjà vu.
"Try again," Rui said, taking out her phone. If she could open her PokéDex app, she could figure out what the rest of Onibi's moves were. Onibi fired another Ember at the Burmy, but instead of trying to Protect himself, the Burmy charged at Onibi. Before Rui could even tell Onibi to watch out, he shrunk, causing the Burmy to sail right over him in his attempt to attack. Okay, he knows Minimize, Rui thought as she got the PokéDex open. She pointed her phone's camera at Onibi, and after a brief scan, the screen listed his four known moves.
"Onibi, use Confuse Ray," Rui said. The familiar colorful lights swirled from the Litwick's mouth and surrounded the Burmy, disorienting him enough to prevent him from counterattacking. One more Ember was enough to take him down.
"Good job, Onibi," Rui said, smiling down at him. The Litwick smiled bashfully, rubbing his little hands together and twisting left and right. Rui recalled him back into his Poké Ball.
With Hickory Town just a few steps away, Rui turned to Shalin and said, "I suppose this is where we part ways. It's been a pleasure meeting you, and I wish you the best of luck on your endeavors." She bowed briefly in what she hoped was a happy medium between her customary politeness and Shalin's earlier request for her not to be as formal. "Perhaps we'll meet again in the future."
