She catches a Pichu that she names Raijin and befriends a Scyther she names Kama.

Lab Work... of a Sort Rui earns a little pocket change with a beaker-cleaning job. She works with a grumpy old scientist, but even he can't complain about her good work.
Experimenting with Shadows While taking some photos on Route 12, Rui comes across Shalin Nariya, "the wildest rider this side of Arciel," a claim Rui can believe after seeing her race by on a Flamethrower-shooting Skuntank. After comforting Clarence, who was frightened by the fire, Rui catches a Litwick. Then, as Rui and Shalin are getting to know each other, a Chansey approaches to fuss over Shalin's Caprice's injuries. Rui manages to catch the Chansey with a Luxury Ball, which triggers her immediate evolution into a Blissey. A Delphox attacks the two, and Shalin sends out her Persian, Serena, for Rui to mount and flee on. She manages to escape while Shalin's Kiku narrowly defeats the Delphox, but her ride is cut short when Serena decides that a nearby wild Sandile would make a good meal. After a discussion with Shalin about the virtues of riding Pokémon, Rui almost catches a Ponyta but ultimately decides against it when the Ponyta is hesitant to join. A few misadventures with Flit the large ride Yanmega later, Rui and Shalin arrive at Hickory Town and part ways.
Facing the Fire Rui takes her party to an off-route training area for some team-building exercises. Her first task is introducing Clarence, her fire-fearing Phantump, to Onibi, her newly caught Litwick. With her Pokémon better acquainted with each other, Rui turns her focus to teaching Raijin battle techniques that go beyond blindly attacking the opponent. Raijin's trust in his trainer allows him to learn these tactics and evolve into Pikachu.
